My neighbors spoke highly of Summit Tree Care so I took their advice. I needed 17 eucalyptus trees removed. Some of the branches were intwined with utility lines. High winds and fire danger made for an anxious time. A crew of eight guys from Summit brought a caravan of trucks and chippers. Using a crane and ropes, they carefully removed the limbs from the lines. it was tricky but they made it look easy. Some of the trees were two feet in diameter. When the crew was done, the trees were gone. They even adjusted their chippers to blow the chips into my yard where I wanted. These guys work hard. They are professionals. They work safely. They works as a team with no wasted motion. They showed up on time and did what they promised. We needed some tree work for various trees in our yard. We had a signature tree - a redwood growing through our deck providing shade from the hot summer sun. We clearly discussed raising the canopy a few feet in order to get the branches off the roof. Unfortunately we did not have the ability to be around the day they came by - they raised the canopy by THIRTY feet, destroying the asthetics of the tree and the deck. Had an appt for an estimate. Dude never showed, but texted later to say he'd been in a car accident, and rescheduled for the following week. All good. However, when I texted to follow up and confirm, I was met with silence, as my text was ignored. I can see from this yelp page that they have had other clients since corresponding with me, so I can safely assume he was not permanently injured from the accident. Normally I wouldn't take the time to write a review but recently I've been dealing with many different contractors and have begun to realize that the good ones are very rare. I had two trees to remove: a 150' Eucalyptus and a 100' pine. Both of these trees were within 50' of my neighbors. The Eucalyptus was one of the biggest I've seen with massive, looming horizontal branches. I contacted four tree services to get bids. One guy never returned my calls. Bob Alvarez, the owner of Summit Tree came out. He arrived in a clean, newer looking, company labeled white truck and wore a company labeled shirt. He was VERY professional. When I received the bids I was shocked to find that Summit was the lowest! I contracted with Summit Tree. The Eucalyptus was removed over two days. Amazingly, his crew was able to save three trees I wanted to keep that were surrounding the Eucalyptus within 15' of the trunk! At my request they left me 16" rounds for fire wood. I wasn't there to witness the removal but the report from the neighbor was that the crew was extremely professional and considerate (no cussing), that was great to hear. The second tree was a nasty, sap coated, beetle infested 100'+ pine. I typically like to save all the firewood but Bob recommended I remove the wood from the site due to the beetle infestation to reduce the risk that the bugs move to the next tree. I confirmed that this was the best thing to do with some online research. One day, tree gone, like it was never there. I can't recommend Summit Tree care enough! Professionalism is very important to me, he and his crew was! The work was done in a very timely manner. They were reliable. They were respectful to my property and my neighbors. They were extremely competent, I don't know how they took out that huge tree in tight location without destroying the surrounding trees and fence. All of this and they were low bid!!! I always recommend getting multiple bids for any job but I'm confident if you choose Summit Tree for your job you'll be satisfied. If, for some reason, Summit isn't the lowest bid on your job I'd still strongly recommend you go with them. They have been around since 1977 for a reason! read more

We live around eucalyptus so over the years have required tree services. The man I used for 30 years recently passed away and I needed to clear overhang to minimize the risk they could pose to PG&E's antiquated power lines. We choose Summit and they were exceptional. Based on yelp, I selected Summit for a quote to cleanup and prune 5 large Sycamores that hadn't been touched in 10+ years. Bob gave me an estimate on 3/15 which was very fair. The estimate was completed within a week and it was fair and reasonable. The project consisted of removing a 60 ft. Monterrey Pine and a 45 ft. redwood tree. Also included was trimming an old Bay tree, some additional trimming and removal of a number of privets. We moved back into this house after having it rented out for a number of years, so we were catching up on a lot of tree work. Although it took awhile to get on the schedule, and there were a couple of days delay due to truck issues, when the day for the job came, a crew of 9 and 3 trucks showed up. The work was completed same day. Raul, the foreman took care of everything and displayed great customer service skills. The crew worked hard and they were very respectful of the property. I called Summit Tree care because they came up when I was looking for another business (my fifth attempt at getting someone to come by) to get the yard squared away. I called on Tuesday and he said he would be here on Friday between 10 am and 12 noon. At 11:45 I called to see where he was. I got a callback a 1/2 hour later and he told me he had an emergency to take care of and that he would be by later in the day. He never called, never showed up. If you don't want to do it TELL ME! During the severe wind and rain of early 2017, a tree fell and lodged in another tree just feet away from our water system and large water tank. The fallen tree was very precariously suspended at a 35 degree angle and could have fallen at any time and destroyed out entire water system. Summit responded immediately to this dangerous situation and delicately cut up and removed the tree. They were a team of seven very professional men who worked tirelessly in the rain, all day to get the job done. He called me back within 10 minutes and I told him about the huge palm tree in from of my house that was dropping branches like crazy. He told me that he would have a guy to trim the tree and haul the branches in a day or two. They came while I was at work the next day and even pulled out a HUGE bush I called back and asked for. As a single woman with 6 acres of vegetation needing care over the last 30 years I have used a variety of tree services. I always tried to select a company based near my home for their convenience and to support the local economy. The service received previously was adequate but not always timely and sometimes left me feeling less than happy. Where do I start? The phone call and a few days later Bob gave me a written estimate of $750.00 and I was happy as a clam and wanted the work done, and then NOTHING..... I called the following week and was told he was making out the schedule and would call me , I waited and waited....I called again the following week , oh sorry no schedule yet but we will call you next week......NOTHING AGAIN.....Oh stupid me I called back a third time and left a message, " Please call me back, I really need my oak tree done , so call me "....NOTHING again...well ya don't have to hit me , I just realized they don't need my business. So I gave up.....finally..... Well well 3 months later good ol Bob calls like nothing happened and says all happy ."Hi , I can come out tomorrow and cut your oak tree" OMG 3 months later !!!!!!! "I said I'm busy" and hung up....he calls me back (nervy isn't he?) and says " We got cut off , in his happy voice so call me" LOL LOL this guy is something else, soooooooooo he calls me back a week later and leaves a message " Hey I can come out and cut that oak tree , for $1600.00 so call me" Funny thing he gave me a price of $750.00 , I guess in 3 months it increased over twice as much ...Inflation huh Bob.... This guy is a piece of work, did I call him back ? NO !!!!! Not worth one more second of my time ......I was in business with my husband for over 25 years and the one thing that I made sure of was customer service because word of mouth can make or break a business and good ol Bob lacks big time in that category ....it will eventually catch up with him....... read more

On Wednesday 2-21-2018 Summit Tree Care was trimming trees in our apartment parking lot. A kitchen stove grease fire started in one of the apartments. The young mom grabbed her 1 1/2 year old, stepped out the front door and through the fire alarm. The Summit guys grabbed a fire extinguisher and ran into the upstairs apartment. Grabbing the flaming pot of oil taking it out side and down the stairs. There were no flames in the apartment so they waited for the fire department to show up. These guys saved the apartment from a possible severe fire that was moment's away, real heroes. They finished the tree trimming and did an excellent job. read more

I found myself in need of a new tree/landscaping company for two pieces of property in the Santa Rosa area. The first job is the biggest and I contacted four or five companies. The two companies that were "Diamond Certified" were the worst. One was reviewed elsewhere (Western Tree) and the second is Summit Tree Care. Neither company got as far as doing any work for me so this review is not about the actual performance of the job. I called them several times in an attempt to get ahold of someone to set up an estimate appointment...I finally received a call back, actually the day they were being scratched off the list. Okay, maybe they were quite busy. So out comes Bob to give me an estimate and boy is he in a hurry to get thru the estimate and get out or at least that was the impression he gave. Now that I have some other estimators to compare this with, he was sadly lacking. I am not even sure he heard everything I was going through because he was in just a tearing hurry to get the heck out of there and get to lunch (this was prior to noon). This appointment took place on September 1, 2015. I had made it really clear that I needed the job done before winter set in and all the reasons why and the areas of concern. (This job is usually done in January so it is not like it is overgrown and neglected) Today is September 28, 2015 and I have heard not one word, gotten not one line of communication by email, voicemail, phone or carrier pigeon. So I called the first number on his card, the voice mail was full "good bye call back another time." The second number gets me chirpy Bob (I assume) and I left him the message that if he couldn't get the estimate done, I didn't have much hope for the actual job. Thank you but no thank you. Very poor customer service. ********************************************************************************************************** At 6 PM the day I wrote this, I received a call on my answering machine...it was Bob, explaining that first of all he had been in a hurry the day of the estimate because he had just heard his brother had a heart attack in another city and apparently he was trying to get on the road and get to him. Understandably distracted. I do not recall when the next thing happened, but apparently he was in an awful accident with a distracted driver and has been laid up in and out of the hospital and not doing any work, unable to do any work and apparently has no one to return calls and let customers know. It is really a shame that this has happened and more of a shame that there isn't someone in the business to make some phone calls to keep a reputation intact. But I wanted to add this information because in all fairness, those are both very good explanations for what happened or didn't happen with my job. I am leaving the review because perhaps it shows what can happen...not that every bad service has this kind of an explanation (Western certainly did not) but I wish Bob nothing but the best and I hope he is back on his feet soon. I have two reviews. The first is of Summit Tree Care and my experience hiring them. The second is of Hi-Tech Tree Care, who my neighbors hired. I dislike using my real name on the internet and so have avoided signing up until now but the disparity in quality between the two is evident around the neighborhood and effects property values. I called Summit Tree Care during their hours and was greeted warmly, then given a reasonable time frame and date for a site evaluation. Bob arrived on time for the site evaluation, we talked pruning, shrubs, removal, and stumps. I was so impressed with the initial quote given for the original work I wanted done I got a few more for other work. I asked how many days it would take to do the work "Days? We can do this in a few hours." I was skeptical, removing four shrubs, two tree-shrubs, three stumps in addition to the aforementioned stumps, and three prunings could not take a few hours. A few days later I was given a follow-up call where I agreed to hire them and was given a time frame. The whole crew and equipment arrived early in the time frame some time late in the morning and worked like lightning. There was a hiccup mid-afternoon when one of the neighbors expressed concerns about a permit but Bob personally came over from another site to ensure that all was legal and smooth over the ruffled feathers. By late afternoon all the work was done and it was as if they were never there. My trees were deadwooded, beautifully pruned, and the tricky stumps beside the fence were gone. I will be hiring them again next year. My neighbors recently hired Hi-Tech tree care. They needed access to my yard and driveway as both the two trees they worked with were close to my side of the property line. They were courteous and I obliged. The owner gave me his card and I got a quote for the removal of two trees which were not done by Summit. The quote was exactly double Summit's offer. I left at 8:30 that morning and thought nothing more of it. When I returned at noon I was horrified to see what they had done to my neighbor's tree, they had cut a few of the lower branches and simply lopped off the top after a point. One of the fallen branches split one of my new privet clean in two. I asked them to repair it and they did, by cutting off half the privet and wrapping electrical tape around it. Mistakes happen and they fixed it (no matter how poorly) so this is only a minor point against them. What my husband and I almost consider criminal is how they brutalized the tree in the back yard. It is not considered pruning when you remove the entire canopy of a tree (we are talking foot thick diameter branches cut off mid-way). This is called lopping or topping and is usually done by people at the power or telephone because they have no knowledge of trees. Even my neighbor and I who also have no arborist knowledge have the intuition that it's not right so I did some research. This company, which claims to be and charges like professionals, should know that this kind of removal can kill trees. Trees are not shrubs, if they were they would be called shrubs, and as such should not be 'pruned' like shrubs. I see the evidence of this company around the neighborhood because there are a number of houses with terrible-looking hacked up trees that even after years have not recovered and will never look the same. Large beautiful trees are one of the appeals of an established neighborhood and these people are seriously jeopardizing the value of our properties. read more

We did not hire Summit Tree Care; our next-door neighbors did, and told us in advance that they were going to have some work done. Fine, no problem. A week later I was sitting at home and heard the sound of chain saws, etc. Tolerable noise, no objection. What I DID object to was the sudden stream of non-stop, top-of-his-lungs shouting by a man standing on my porch, 3 feet from my front door. I looked out and saw about 5 workers scurrying around my front yard and one man shouting directions at the guy who was up in my neighbor's tree, wielding the chain saw. I went upstairs to look out my office window to see what was going on. Imagine my surprise to see a ladder leaning against our house and find a man standing on the roof right outside my window, holding a guide rope for the guy in the tree. I was horrified. Did the job foreman knock on my door and ask permission to work in our yard? Did anyone tell me they needed to climb on our roof? Do they carry liability insurance to cover accidents on the property of a neighbor? Did anyone at Summit return the phone message I left at the time this was happening, about 3:30 on a Friday afternoon? No return call over the weekend, of course, but no call on Monday either. And no response to my husband's call on Monday afternoon. This is thoroughly unprofessional and thoughtless behavior from a supposedly reputable business. He never gives you attitude or tries to strong-arm you. We've used him many times over the years for both firewood and tree work. The price has always been fair and the quality backs it up. Here is a good story. I bought a half-chord of wood from Summit Tree Care. The delivery was good, the quantity right, but the wood didn't burn well. It was green or damp. I heat my house with wood and wood that doesn't burn wasn't just useless, it was taking up space. So, I spoke with Bob. It took no effort to convince him this was a problem; he understood. Today he sent over another half-chord of softwood and some bags of kindling free of charge to make sure I have something that burns. This is far more than making amends; this was really doing something right by someone. Lesson: mistakes do happen. In this case, I might have gotten wood from the bottome of the pile. But, it is nice to know someone is standing so completely behind their product/service and is willing to go so far to make amends. Way to go! read more

Bill and his professional crew at Summit Tree Care just finished a major cleanup of my property. After the wildfires I was left with a multitude of burned trees. I got several estimates from arborists - Bob's was the lowest but I would have gone with him anyway because of his expertise and his caring attitude and helpful advice. After determining which trees (especially redwoods) would probably survive, he and his team removed the rest - mainly redwoods, cedrus deodoras, mimosas, a huge pine, cypress, birch also juniper shrubs - all burned in the fire. They did a wonderful job. All that work was done in a day and a half. His crew was very professional, and kind and considerate, and they did such a good job of clean up. Despite my calls and his promises to call back, I am left with the impression that a "small" job is not important to Bob and his company. I highly recommend Bob's company Summit Tree Care. I interviewed 4 companies for the job. In addition to getting the job done right, I also wanted these tree trimming companies to protect the bird's nests in the trees they were working on. Wildlife conservation is incredibly important to me and I ONLY work with companies who take conservation and preservation seriously. There are SO many beautiful birds on the property I feel it's my duty to protect their habitat. When it came to nesting birds, Summit Tree Care was the ONLY company that addressed my concern. Kind of sad. One of his competitors actually told me "we can't do much to preserve bird's nests. We can't relocate them, it's not something we do." Bob however immediately responded to my question and told me he takes great care to preserve bird's nests and in his words "we are stewards of nature. It's our duty to protect bird nests and relocate them safely." With that I hired him immediately! Everyone can cut down trees. That's the easy part. Protecting nature is what most companies fail to pay attention to. It's not profitable. Bob did a great job.
