I'm honestly making my way through the strip between Belmont and Diversey. This week Sumo. Did not disappoint. They checked for our vacc cards and IDs at the door! We were 1 out of the 2 tables dining in that night. However, there were lots of orders for takeout. Our server was very attentive, and he gave us time to browse through the menu. My friend got a Roll Combo dinner, while I got a sushi regular. The plating was gorgeous!! I lived in Japan and have since made it a point to visit as many hibachi in Chicago as possible. That said, sumo is the very best. The customer service, the food, the ambience, all top-notch and five stars. Be advised there is no hibachi that you sit around. They will cook it hibachi style in the back and bring it out to you, but you won't see the flaming choo-choo train that you're used to lol strongly highly recommended. read more

I was walking home from the Ash Wednesday mass when I passed by. I was initially going to cook some shrimp when I got home, but then I decided that laziness would prevail and I schlepped right into this restaurant. The place was nice, clean and had a very friendly staff. I ordered a rainbow roll and a futomaki roll. The rainbow roll was the typical California roll with various raw fish and avocado on top; it was delicious. The ingredients were fresh and quite substantial. The futo was a bit of a struggle, but in a good way. The roll was massive, I tired my best to not look like a shmuck but each bite was a tiny game to chew... and I have an obnoxiously large mouth. The futo had fresh avocado, egg, oshinko, a tiny bit of lettuce and several sprigs of asparagus. The flavors blended together nicely and the freshness left a delightfully crispy crunch. Note, I think futo literally means fat. I guess the idea is to put a ton of ingredients into one roll. So there may be a lack of continuity of what is actually in a futo roll from one restaurant to another; whereas a rainbow roll is pretty well defined and consistent. I don't believe the futo roll here has any fish, making this suitable for vegetarians. But be sure to ask. I will definitely be returning. Additional points for having great soy sauce with depth. It's always annoying when places serve cheap soy sauce that is all "treble" has no "bass", if that makes any sense to anyone. Also, the waitress was very sweet and tentative. I feel like four stars is a bit low but five is for places that absolutely blow me away, which is extremely rare. Unfortunately I have to go with four. read more

On first glance of the menu there is a select group of sushi's that are available for the 2/$10 or 3/$12.50 lunch Eel (Unagi) & Cucumber - Unagi has also been one of my favorite sushi's (hell who am I kidding I love them all). This was good, but the Unagi was sparse w/mostly cucumber. The cucumber overwhelmed the Unagi flavor. Yellowtail (hamachi) & scallion. I love hamachi the velvety smooth flavor of fresh hamachi, melts like butter in your mouth w/the chewy texture of the nori wrap w/scallion added to the roll. Chicken Tempura Roll - you think Chicken tempura in Sushi? This was actually my favorite roll. The crunchy tempura battered chicken w/lettuce had a nice crunch & texture w/the tempura good smooth subtle flavors To finish off the meal the waitress brought 1/2 of an orange. Nice restaurant w/pretty good food and service. They have a nice selection of items from a Lunch Menu for very reasonable prices. Will I be back probably. I'm a big sushi lover. I have tried many Japanese restaurants in and out of Chicago. I dare to say Sumo perhaps has the best looking sushi rolls in Chicagoland. So many options that I want to recommend, such as Volcano Roll and Dynamite Roll. You sure don't want to miss those two if you are a sushi lover like me. And their hibachi, oh my, smells great and tastes even better! We almost pack a takeout after dining in but we thought maybe it's a better idea to enjoy hibachi in the business next time. Though I noticed that they had non-stop takeout and delivery orders during the couple hours we were there so I should say it must be as good as what you get when you dine in. That said, we decided to take a chance and get out of our comfort zone and cheat on our SouthLoop Kai sushi and are we glad we did. Sumo sushi is BYO, and offers fresh fish at a very affordable price point. We got the American sushi combo which cones with with a miso soup, salad, 9 pieces of sushi (3 each of tuna, salmon and yellowtail) and a salmon avocado doll. In addition she got Uni, roe and a spider roll. Service and prompt but not overbearing and thanks to a Yelp tip, we got the 15% off $30 deal. Sumo sushi is a great neighborhood spot! They have a ton of rolls, pretty typical Japanese sides, & other hibachi + noodle options for if you don't like sushi. The environment is very casual & service was very quick on a Wednesday evening. I got a Philadelphia roll (ik so boring but common you can't go wrong) & my friend got the rainbow roll (SO PRETTY!). I'm not sure if this place is certified gluten free (I would guess no for if you're celiac), but they have gluten free soy sauce !!!!!!!! We both also got miso soup! The reason I give 3 stars is because everything was good & they did everything you'd expect out of a restaurant but nothing about it made it particularly stand out. They do have a great lunch special though & I would definitely return for the convenience & good prices! read more

Stopped into Sumo for lunch shortly after they opened at 1. Was pleasantly surprised at how quick the service was. The waitress was very kind and quick, filling up our water and tea quickly and fast to bring out soups or salads. We weren't super hungry and ended up ordering the Sweetheart Roll and Godzilla Roll. The Godzilla was a classic, delicious and flavorful. The Sweetheart was adorably plated like hearts and outstanding. The fish was so fresh and delicious, we are already planning our next visit. Sumo has been there for years and before the space was another Asian restaurant that I recalled I had a good experiences at. So I am glad after seeing the Sumo sign for many years I stopped in for a late lunch today. Typically I order a Bento Box when visiting for the first time. The staff were very friendly. The place is very clean. Very generous amount of chicken in the Bento Box including tasty vegetables. The maki included in the Bento Box was very fresh. The shumai in the Bento Box, I could have done without. Not sure if it was from a microwave? Not impressed with the miso soup, tasted very commercial, like something I would make from a box at home. However, the side salad was crisp and fresh. Will I go back? Yes because the positive was more than the negative and I will try the maki next time. They seemed to have interesting combinations and the sushi chefs also seem to be busy enjoying making their creations. read more

As an avid sushi eater, I enjoyed this place. It's always nice to see when a place cares about the presentation of their food since we eat with the eyes first. The sushi itself is pretty fresh and I love when places don't pad the sushi with a lot of extra rice; they have a perfect rice to filling ratio. I tried the spicy salmon roll and the Spicy Girl Roll. I really enjoyed the spicy salmon roll - it had a lot of fish in it and a good flavor. The Spicy Girl Roll was also good, but the black pepper tuna was a little bit much. I love the taste of the fish, and with the crust on the tuna it overpowered the rest of the roll. This roll also had a lot of meat and vegetables to it, so that was a plus. The service was really good. They kept checking on us to make sure we were doing okay. My water was filled quickly and the wait for the food wasn't bad also - no more than 10 minutes. We went around 2PM on a Saturday afternoon, so we were on the tail end of their lunch special (Monday-Saturday 12-3PM). The best part about this place is the lunch specials and the combo deals. Also as I noted in my tip, there's a 10% discount on carry-out and delivery and 15% discount for dine-in for orders $30 and up. read more
