Going by the name, we were expecting hibachi tables, like Benihanna. But it is just a sit down booth and table place. You order your meal or sushi. They cook it on a hibachi in the back of the restaurant, and bring it to you. The pricing is reasonable. I guess since you don't get a show with dinner. I had the chicken and shrimp hibachi. The shrimp was tough, but edible, the chicken was ok, but I'm pretty sure 1 piece was just warmed, not cooked. The fried rice is not hibachi rice, it is doused with brown sauce, I bet soy, not much flavor. If should be FRIED with egg peas onion. With the ginger salad . It was ok. Hubby had the miso soup, which was just warm, filet and rice. He liked it. They have a bottle of the shrimp sauce on the table, but no steak sauce. We will try them again. read more

This place is fantastic. The coconut chicken is absolutely delicious. I ordered several sushi rolls and a few nigiri sushi. The tuna was so fresh and pretty much melted in my mouth. The owner is super nice and conversed with us for a while. He informed us that he uses only fresh fish, not frozen... I could definitely tell. All the rolls were good, but if you like raw fish sushi, get the Tiger Roll. So much bang for your buck. No hibachi tables, but all you miss is the show... not quality. The sushi menu isn't large, but the sushi chef will make anything you want. Even the edamame was plump and easy to eat, and the seaweed salad was very fresh and flavorful. I've lived in big cities that had a lot of restaurants to offer, and this place, in my opinion, could rival with any of them..... and at a reasonable price!! I'm so happy that I no longer have to leave town to get good quality sushi. The only reason I only gave 4 stars is because of the atmosphere and the bathroom. I understand it is an older building and it just needs updated. But I'm sure with more business they will improve the aesthetics of the place. I walked in to order takeout: 3 special sushi rolls, 2 simple rolls, and a chicken/veggie/noodle plate. It was over $60, which is to be expected in a reputable Japanese restaurant. I was greeted by good service; friendly and talkative young ladies who put me at ease despite my initial weariness . One of the hostesses particularly talked-up the quality of the fish, saying their food was "so fresh" ....and I felt safe.... But.... The food was disgusting. The rolls we ordered were sub-par, this would never pass for quality sushi ANYWHERE but the town of Steubenville. Drive 30 minutes east to Robinson Township, PA, and - for the same price- eat sushi that matches the quality of food you could expect at restaurants in large cities, the west or east coast, or basically anywhere else than this incapable town. The sushi kiosk at Kroger serves better food, which should say something! As for the chicken and noodles: if unseasoned, overcooked, rubbery chicken in a pile of bland vegetables and spaghetti noodles makes your Friday night just so special than knock yourself out. I will never patronize this establishment again. Service doesn't outweigh quality. And I suspect that the sushi chefs (who were very untraditionally hidden from view) are not Asian and have NO idea how to prepare it. Stay away!!! It's food-poisoning status here. Once again Steubenville has proved itself to be completely inept at the culinary arts. read more

I'm really disappointed with the food after all the hype they had. People kept saying how good the place is. Yeah sure the inside looks good, but the service needs to change, I went with my wife last week and I didn't go to seat until 30 minutes later, this young lady told me to wait and i did wait for about 10 minutes until she came back, we ordered our drinks and some teriyaki chicken, fried rice, etc. I got the food and it just looked so bland but I still gave it a shot. The rice was hard, and the chicken was pretty undercooked. The waiter came by to tell us if the food was ok but, I didn't want to be mean to them so I just smiled and said that the food was ok. I told her to give us our check and it took her about 20 minutes. We saw the check and it was way more overpriced then I thought it would've been for the small portion they gave us. I paid them, went back to my hotel and I'm not coming back ever again. I would rather go get pizza in the area or take out from sesame grill. So all I ask is, don't rush everything and get better waiters read more

I really wanted to like this place more, since there are so few places for sushi in Steubenville or anywhere nearby. Decent cuts of fish, and everything was fresh, but the sushi meals did not contain a lot of variety, and we did not have separate cups/saucers for soy sauce (I ended up spilling soy on the plate, which then soaked into the rice. Yuck). They did have really cool fancy plates. Waitress was friendly and helpful, prices are reasonable, the salad w/ ginger dressing was good, and the place is not too crowded. read more

I would say its the best in the area by far but not quite par with other places I've been to. The rolls can be inconstant from each visit; albeit good, just not consistent... seems sometimes the spicy tuna roll has tempera crumbs, sometimes avocado, sometimes cucumber. I was visiting my family and noticed that Steubenville now has a sushi restaurant. I am native of this area but I currently live in North Carolina. I wasn't sure if my former hometown could pull off sushi but I was surprised at the results. I ordered to go and got the Spider-man Sushi roll, crab rangoon and tuna tataki. The crab rangoon was excellent better then what I get her in North Carolina. The Spider-man roll was a little more of an adventure. It contains Soft shell crab, spicy crab meat, eel, spicy tuna and avocado on top. Not all of the rolls were consistent some did not include the avocado on top but it was still very tasty. The tuna tataki was not my favorite. It could have been seared in the pan a little longer and it lacked seasoning. The restaurant looked very nice and it seems to attract a younger crowd which does not surprise me . My hometown is not known for adventurous eaters. I am excited to see something new and different in Steubenville and I hope it lasts. read more

The chicken and veggies were excellent, the rice good but plain, but the appetizer salad was average at best. Some people in the Ohio Valley might be apprehensive or unfamiliar with sushi, but Sumo is definitely worth a try. There are plenty of items on the menu that do not contain raw fish, and the menu indicates which ones do, so you have no excuse not to swing by and enjoy. And the Ohio roll? So I want to start off by saying I have been dinning with Sumo for 3 years now and even though it's not the best hibachi it's on the cheaper side and isn't bad for what it is so we do dine here but mostly we get take out. Rather often, honestly 3-4 times a month at least and until recently moving we were living 25 minutes from sumo so we were traveling almost an hour all together to dine here. Tonight was definitely our last time getting ANYTHING from here. Called in to place a take out order at 10:35 pm (open till 11 on Saturday) it was still cutting it a little close so I was thinking they might say it was too late to place an order, which wouldn't have been a problem. Instead they let us place the order and said it would be 30 minutes. I thought once again it was odd he was letting us place the order when they closed at 11 and he's saying it would take 30 minutes (11:05 is when the order would done). We pulled in at 11:04 and every light in the place was off and not a single car was in the parking lot and the door was locked. I never in my life have experienced something so unprofessional. I would also like to add it was the OWNER I placed the order with on the phone, like I said I've been dinning here for 3 years and have spoke with him many times and I'm positive it was him. For the owner to not just be in the building when something like this toke place but be the one who actually did it is mind blowing to me. All that being said it only leaves me to believe this was done on purpose out of pure laziness and unprofessionalism. Doesn't seem like it was a coincidence that I was told my order would be done 5 minutes after they closed, and never have a seen every employee be out of the restaurant 5 minutes after they close!! All he had to say was it was too late to place an order and he could have kept a loyal customer but I can promise I will never give this place another dime. Also, I would like to add anytime I have ever been 5-10 minutes late to pick up my takeout the owner will personally call me and make sure we are still coming so once again this was no mistake just unprofessional. read more

Considering all aspects, Sumo is by far my favorite steakhouse/sushi joint in the tri-state area. Everybody knows when you go to a Japanese steak house you go for 1 of 2 things: hibachi or sushi. Both of which, I believe Sumo has a superior quality than most. The Tiger Roll may be one of my favorite rolls of all time and that is no exaggeration (I have eaten sushi around the entire world). The rolls are fair priced for a considerable amount of food. As for the hibachi entrees, I would also say the portion sizes are generous and the quality is exquisite. The one downfall, that many may attribute to Sumo is, the restaurant does not provide the famous "hibachi show" with the dinner. I particularly don't mind this, as I would rather prefer the quiet. I myself, am over the whole thing, as I would rather sit down and eat my food in peace, unbothered. They provide every table with an entire bottle of yum yum shrimp sauce. That's right, literally all the shrimp sauce you could ask for. Unlike most of these other places who's get aggregated when you ask for an extra scoop on the scallops. I would also be remiss if I did not mention "John" the owner. Simply a great man, who will always remember a loyal customer and make you feel welcome and appreciated when you come in. This used to be a weekly go to for us. My fiance and I loved this sushi joint but, it's steadily been going down hill since it first opened. The final straw was after a few weeks of mess ups in carry out orders for us. That's right, I said a few WEEKS. We tried to give Sumo a real chance at redeeming itself. It's unfortunate but, the owner, John, was one of the number one reasons we stopped going. I tried explaining to him my disappointment after those weeks of mess ups and all he did was put his hand in my face and told me to wait for my order I had already waited a half hour for. I paid my thirty dollars in over priced sushi rolls and left and we decided to never go again. My suggestion is, if you want consistently good food, this isn't the place for you. For the cost, you may as well go somewhere else in the valley and actually spend your money at a place that is owned by locals instead of New Yorkers who come down to make a quick buck off of our good hearted community. Sushi here is too good. I just dislike how it is warm I prefer to not eat warm sushi but either way it is still delicious!
