Great selection of Mexican foods, especially the prepared foods like chicharron, barbacoa, pastry, etc. The prices are right and the workers are helpful. The selection is also surprisingly large for a store at 96th and Allisonville, bordering Fishers and Carmel. If you see something you don't recognize, the staff is more than willing to help - just ask.

So the pastries/baked goods here are a bit on the dry side. I've figured out what makes them so much better. Go home, make some good coffee, and dip it in there. Tada! All tasty now! Do all the Hispanic markets have a central bakery they get their goods from? It just seems like many of these stores are so small and either have an expansive lunch counter or deli/butcher section that I find it hard to believe they can also fit a commercial oven in there. Anyway, I digress. This is an ideal spot to run in, grab the couple of things you'll need, and exit. Use your high school Spanish and you'll mostly be fine.

We moved here from Texas, and were missing access to Mexican cooking essentials and ready-made tamales.

This is an African/Caribbean type grocery store. The owners are from Ghana. They have…read morecanned/dried goods, fresh produce, frozen meat/produce, plus some sundries. My favorite things to buy here are: 1. Jamaican ginger ale (non-alcoholic). Has a real gingery bite. American ginger ale will seem weak by comparison after trying this. 2. Plantains, very green, for slicing and deep-frying into chips. 3. Palm oil. This is a "bad" oil high in saturated fat, but I use it in moderation. One, for "seasoning" cast-iron skillets (instead of Crisco). And two, just a teaspoon added to "good oil" when cooking popcorn. (I cook regular non-microwave popcorn in a wok, using 2 tablespoons + 1 teaspoon of peanut oil or corn oil, plus 1 teaspoon of palm oil, plus 1/2 cup of popcorn kernals.) The palm oil gives it a movie-theater flavor and a little tint of orange. 4. Canned powdered (dry) whole milk. Most powdered milk you buy at American groceries is non-fat. This has all the cream. I don't like to buy fresh milk, because I don't drink much. So I keep this around for baking. Watch the expiration date, because it doesn't keep as long as non-fat milk, but it's still usually good for at least a year. 5. Various flours, like yam flour, cocoyam flour, plantain flour, rice flour, and corn starch. 6. Exotic bar soaps. They have various imported soap, some medicated some very fragrant.

If you need Fu Fu Flour, smoked cow feet or African coconut oil, this is your place. I'm tempted to go back and buy the banana sauce for novelty. The liquid was red and thin like Tabasco, but smelled like the tropical fruit. I'm not sure what confounds me more: Why so much food coloring is added to the product, or what to do with it. I'm sure I could whip up some confections with it. If you want African garb or DVDs, you can find those here, too. It's conveniently located at the Shops on 54th Street center.

I didn't originally visit K-Kitchen to get Spam musubi, though. I've recently been obsessed with kimbap. I've eaten it for dinner two days in a row! I saw that K-Kitchen has grab-and-go kimbap, so I moseyed over to grab three rolls (and that musubi) for my family's dinner. My kids didn't really care for the kimbap, even after telling them it was a lot like sushi, which they love. But who cares what they thought: I loved the kimbap! I got two beef kimbap and gimbap, which was crab and egg. My favorite was beef, though -- it's marinated, and with that and the pickled vegetables all wrapped in rice and nori, it was delicious. I don't know if you're supposed to, but I popped my rolls in the microwave for a few seconds, just to take the cold edge off. In my opinion, kimbap tastes better at room temperature. K-Kitchen also sells jars of kimchi, Korean noodles, soybean stew and lots of other dishes. It's located inside Saraga International Grocery.
