Arriving- The Jacaranda is on Main Street so finding it is a snap. There is street parking in the front and a large parking lot behind the hotel. Availability- The ACE lunch buffet is only weekdays and only when the snowbirds are here. The remainder of the year, lunch reverts to menu-based. Check the website for availability if you're worried. Ambience- Very, very, very nice. Some folks say elegant. Two large dining rooms. See my picture. It's so nice you might worry about the $$ but don't fret! More about that later. Adult Libations- Sorry, not here. If you are dying for an adult drink, there is a great bar seconds away. Have a great lunch here and then head over as many folks do. Just Yelp it. Customer Service- I've visited many times and never had a problem. They serve most drinks by the carafe here and leave it on the table which is much appreciated by many folks. You pay on your way out at a desk in the hotel lobby. Pricing- It's currently $17.50 for soup, salad, multiple hot entrees, dessert, and drinks. And of course it's ACE. Food- The food is stick to your ribs comfort food. There are basically five stations. 1. Pick up your warm rolls and butter here. 2. Today's homemade soup which varies, and I love most of them. 3. A fresh, beautifully maintained salad bar. See my picture. 4. Hot entrees and sides which are different every day. On my last visit I zeroed in on sliced pork tenderloin which was excellent. Note that they almost always have fried chicken as one of the entrees. 5. Dessert. There is a substantial display, but I never make it there as I'm already stuffed! So a four star, sit down, ACE lunch in a beautiful atmosphere for less than twenty bucks! Sound good? You bet!

The hotel was built two years before Lake Wales most iconic landmark, Bok Tower was built. At the time it was built the 10 story hotel was the crown jewel of Lake Wales. It is one of only a few remaining skyscrapers from the 1920's. The first owners of the hotel were Florida governor Martin and silent movie star Thomas Meighan who owned the hotel along with fellow movie stars Gloria Swanson, Mary Pickford, and Clara Bow and Hollywood attorney Nathan Burkan and Hollywood producer Victor Heerman. The hotel was built for $500,000 and it was financed by selling stock in the enterprise. The hotel architect was Fred Bishop and D.J. Phipps. It was designed in a Masonary Vernacular style with elements of Mediterranean Revival. It is an example of 3 part block with a base, shaft, and a cap. You can see the divide on the building. It was a style that was popular throughout the 1920's. The hotel was constructed of steel reinforced poured concrete in a post-and-beam method without bearing walls. The sturdy construction allowed the building to survive a hurricane in 2004 with only minor damage. The interior of the hotel was ornately decorated with Palladium style windows and doorways, Italian made ceilings, columns, a drinking fountain by Ernest A. Batchelder, marble floors by the Georgia Marble Company, mosaic tile floors, and a wrought iron balustrade. The building had a central mezzanine and shopping arcades. In 1972 the hotel was purchased by Anderson Sun State and renamed the Groveland Motor Inn. The hotel was renovated to hosts visitors interested in the Green Swamp land sectioned off for development. There was interest in the land because of its proximity to Disney World but when the state declared the land a critical area of concern and prohibited development the company dissolved and auctioned the hotel off in 1974. In 1978 the hotel was signed over to the nationally known religious music and drama group, the Agape Players. The made improvements and added a restaurant and ice cream parlor. They added a teaching facility and operated a Christian hotel on the upper floors. They sold the hotel when they disbanded in 1985. In the 1980's New Yorker Victor Khubani owned the hotel and changed its name to Hotel Grand. The hotel was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 31, 1990. He was not able to make the code enforcement repairs necessary regarding the sprinkler system and elevator. In 1995 the hotel was sold at auction. Restoration was started but never completed. By 2008 the city of Lake Wales owned the hotel. It had been standing empty for the past three decades, destroyed by vagrants and vandals and attempts to modernize it. The hotel had acquired the nickname the Green Monster due to its garish color from years of neglect. The city contacted Ron Brown, President of Dixie WalesBilt LLC. To restore it. Brown, a former contractor promised to restore the hotel to its former glory. The city worked out a deal with Brown where they would sell him the building for $10 if he painted the building, gave $80,000 to the city, and increased the market value of the building to 1.6 million dollars in 16 months time. In June 2011 Brown assured the city he would be ready to open the north side ground floor for retail in the fall. Based on that the city gave him the hotel but fall came and went and it never opened. In 2014 community leaders came together to help Brown. Reid Hardman worked with Brown to restore the exterior of the building. The exterior was painted and the building details and window frames were restored. Since then the project has stalled. The city does not feel that Brown is quickly enough to finish the project. The city has been punishing Brown by not renewing his building permits. Brown blames the city for impeding his work but he has not secured funding for the next level of the project estimated to cost 10 million dollars. At the this point the city would like to find someone else to take over the building although Ron Brown wants to finish and open the hotel. The city and the owner are at an impasse on how to move forward. Lake Wales has the ability to reclaim the hotel through code enforcement liens and fines. As you can imagine there are quite a few cool ghost stories associated with this old hotel, people who checked but who never really checked out. Will Ron Brown ultimately get the job done? Only time will tell. This building has so much history that it would be a shame not to see this beautiful hotel restored.

Each room has a theme - the jungle, the sea, the Far East, and "Grandma's Room." I recommend picking out your room once you arrive, as they vary in many ways. The new owners are a sweet, personable Midwestern couple. They recently installed satellite TV and Wi-Fi in all the rooms, and provide free (ice cold) bottled water for guests. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for some relaxation time in this part of the state.

The parking is right out side the door and the rates very reasonable. It was very quiet. We forgot a cell phone in the room and they called so quickly we never got out of town. A lot of the rooms had druggies in them, and they are not properly sanitizing them! The prices for the worst rooms in town is ridiculous! We left on our own, due to the poor work being done! The building is unsafe, unsanitary and a fire hazard! We were wishing the best for this place and to turn it around but unfortunately because of the property manager, this was not how it ended up being! Code enforcement is lazy, they know all of this and still haven't dealt with it and continue to allow it to be open! If you have kids it's very dangerous, between the rooms being unsafe and the vehicles flying through the parking lot! I would never advise anyone to stay here! My husband would get up , all hours of the night to answer a phone call or to check people in (3 or 4 o'clock am! Was open 24/7, we rarely left because the owner said that we had to be there 24/7! Also a reminder that we were there for 7 months and not having to pay rent, yes it was great so we could save for our new place but they act like its giving you a place, without rent, adds up to, no income at all, $350/week, is worth not getting any income, can't pay your bills or have any money, never offered or asked how are you paying your bills, since they refuse to pay you, a life full of stress, open 24/7, getting up and answering the phone or door (even if no rooms are available, even at 3-4am), constantly writing reviews, so it looks like it's a great place to stay! There was so much for the kids to do that they were never bored. They loved everything from the waterslide and foam party to the arts and crafts, but their absolute favorite was the scavenger hunts. The pool was perfect for the Florida heat, and the refreshing drinks available poolside were a great bonus. One employee was walking around kindly reminding guests to keep their drinks on the edge of the pool instead of in the water. He was always polite and friendly, which we really appreciated. Overall, we had a wonderful weekend and can't wait to come back!

I picked one in the low 400's...I think it was 405, because one on each side was empty. Fast forward to the day before I get an email about virtual check in. However it states I am in the mid 100's....so I call and inquire. At the time of the call there were 109 sites vacant. The girl proceeds to tell me if you dont pay a $50 lock fee. They can move me at their discretion. So I got moved....additionally, got here an hour early and had to pay $25 early check in. 109 empty spots and the pool is like a carnival cruise pool....SLAMMED! Only 2 small comfort stations. No shade to be found. We are here now, and this may well get updated for a vetter rating...or worse, who knows. But it seems like a resort that will nickel and dime you to death. And moving someone who booked, and paid in full is some shady crap....they are all about the money grab!
