I'm so glad I got introduced to this place. The staff are amazing and just the vibe overall once you walk in. I kept an open mind about doing yoga again, especially after being on hiatus for over a decade. I'm also not one to attend a 6am class but something about getting a workout first thing in the morning really makes for a better rest of your day. I've tried Sun Yoga and Sun Sculpt and my fave has to be Sun Sculpt. Jo Ann was the instructor for both of the Sun Sculpt classes that I took and she does such an amazing job keeping the class going. If you are near the area and wanting to do yoga, this place is great. So far I've really enjoyed all my classes at Sun Yoga. It's a really cute studio in the Hawaii Kai/ Aina Haina area. I had driven past multiple times but I've never gotten a chance to try it out until I started using the ClassPass app. My friend got me to sign up for ClassPass.. and Sun Yoga had a really great schedule to choose from! I work a 9-5 job so it's a great option for having the late afternoon classes! I really enjoy taking Yin Yoga with Tara. She's got the perfect calming demeanor and makes you feel really comfortable, relaxed and at ease. Abbey is also a wonderful instructor. She has a beautiful voice and attitude. I'm definitely going to continue bringing my friends here. Be sure to get there early if you want to choose where to place your mat, the studio fills up quickly. If you can't handle the heat at Bikram's, come to Sun Yoga - it's 6 degrees cooler. lol I would have never known about this place if Mia N. hadn't asked me to try a class. I am not a fan of hot yoga. Tried a Bikram class once and hated it. It was too hot, and too long (90 minutes). But since Sun Yoga offers 60 minute classes, I figured what the heck, maybe 60 minutes of hot yoga will do me some good. I went to the 4:30-5:30 pm class on a Wednesday, and a lady by the name of Fran taught the class. She was very Bikram-like. For most of the class she stood in the back or walked around, telling us verbally what to do. No demonstrations, just commands. There were a lot of commands and corrections - in other words, lots of talking by the instructor. All fitness instructors have their own style of teaching. Yoga instructors are no different. If you are new to Yoga, or don't prefer this style of practice where the instructor verbally calls out the exercises, don't take Fran's class. Luckily I've taken a few yoga classes before so I was somewhat familiar with the moves, but if I was a total newbie, I would have not been able to keep up. This instructor assumes that the students have had prior yoga experience. She also does not give you variations for the more difficult moves. They have an attractive offer for new students - two weeks for $30, which is a steal considering it's $18 plus tax to drop in for one class. I gave them 4 stars for the number of class times to choose from, and the studio is new, clean, and upkept very well. Sun Yoga Hawaii is a beautiful & quaint studio tucked away in Aina Haina. Do you remember the old Chuck E Cheese...well they're right there in a teeny tiny alley by the post office. I did a Bikram 30 day challenge 5 years ago, so I'm pretty familiar with "hot yoga", but this was my first at an infrared light studio. Lamps are located on all 4 corners of the room (the closer you are to the corner, the hotter it is). If you're a first timer, I'd recommend setting up your mat by the back door. I love this studio, because of the lamps & the beautiful nurturing instructors. Selena is my favorite thus far. I like the fact it's only 60 minutes & they have a shower you can take after. This review is for an Ayurveda class offered by Sun Yoga Hawaii and taught by Akaljas Singh, an Ayurvedic lifestyle counselor. The special two-hour class was held just after a hot yoga session so the room at first was steamy hot and I had half a mind to run out the door as I had flashbacks to a particularly stinky session at a Bikram yoga studio. Fortunately, this studio was aired out, cleaned and comfortably cool by the session and with no lingering aromas. Natural light filtered through curtain-covered glass windows as nine of us sat on yoga mats facing our instructor who exuded a calm, peaceful demeanor. Ayurveda, we learned, is the science of living a long and healthy life and originates out of India. We are composed of five elements -- ether (space between the wind), air, fire, water and earth -- and each of us has a particular combination of these elements. By understanding your individual nature -- Vata (ether and air), Pitta (fire and water) and Kapha (earth and water) -- you will learn what is best for your body and mind. For those who love food, Ayurveda teaches us about the six tastes -- sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent and astringent -- that stir the 'agni' or fire in the naval. Essentially, these are the foods that best aid in digestion and nutrition absorption for your individual body type. If you've ever wondered why you feel a certain way after eating a meal (e.g. sleepy, alert, bloated, irritable), Ayurveda will teach you why and what foods to avoid and enjoy for your particular body. Ironically, we tend to crave the very foods we should avoid. Proper nutrition, massage and yoga practice are part of a healthy lifestyle, and likely explains why Akaljas Singh emanates inner peace. Sunyoga is amazing for a number of reasons. I didn't realize how great I would feel until I tried it. After every session my body feels clean and rejuvenated. After going for a number of times I learned why Sunyoga makes my body feel so good. It is much more beneficial than regular yoga because of the infrared heat. It helps sweat out 20% of toxins instead of just 3% with regular exercise. Also the infrared light is good for my skin. I have bad acne scarring and every class I try to position myself next to the heat lamp so that my skin will absorb the infrared light. I believe it is the same technology they use in skin care centers to heal skin blemishes. I know my grandma pays an ungodly amount of money to have red light therapy on her skin. Sunyoga offers it while you do yoga! Great place. Definitely check it out! read more

This studio has bamboo floors! Win! Sun yoga is practiced in a heated room, but there are different poses from the popular Bikram Yoga style. Friendly staff, clean facility, and lots of parking. Classes are available at various times throughout the week, so check the website for updates. They offer 60-90 minute classes as late as 8pm. Arrive at least 15 minutes early to give yourself time to check in at the desk, find a spot in the room, and adjust to the heat prior to class. No showers or lockers available, but you can keep your belongings in an open cubby hole. The studio is tucked away in the Aina Haina Shopping Center in the alley way by the post office. I never was a big fan of HOT yoga. I've taken a few classes and I can feel my body getting stronger. I can handle the heat because the also open the doors to let cool air in at times when finishes with a set. The heat makes you be able to stretch more and sweat more. Cons: Kinda pricey ($18 per drop in class) Customer service isn't up to par (encountered one staffer with attitude; also never received a reply to an inquiry made both in person and via email) Classes can get super crowded (like mats-touching-each-other crowded!) In regards to crowdedness, it just goes to show how popular this place is. But at the same time, I'm not sure why the class size isn't limited, especially since you are encouraged to RSVP online for classes. I'm not sure if RSVPs are capped at a certain number, but they should be and also walk-ins shouldn't be allowed if the RSVP limit is reached. Are they trying to squeeze in as much money - er, students - as they can? I've heard some teachers say they want everyone to "get their yoga on," but it's hard to have a satisfying session when someone's toes are in my face. Quality over quantity! read more

i enjoy yoga. and after 4 years of consistently doing it...I am starting to know a little more about what I like. I've had experience with Corepower and Bikram yoga. I enjoy the type of yoga that makes me sweat, and thats why I have been drawn towards studios that utilize heat. Redeemed one of those coupons for two weeks unlimited for $18. They have several specials/incentives to continue membership after the week is over. I think they are also in the process of offering more classes. Located in an Aina Haina strip mall, its down a skinny walkway by the Post Office. Easy to miss. There are 60 minute and 75 minute classes. I was able to take classes from Paula, Selena, and Victoria. The owner Michelle was friendly, sparking up small talk and trying to get to know you on a first name basis. Some of the other yoga studios have so much volume that it starts to feel impersonal,rushed, and even stressful, just people coming in and out. Kinda working against the whole point of relaxation, peace, and serenity. The studio itself is small, but I never had a problem finding space in class. Stay in the middle to get some breeze (when they open the doors), as the infrared lamps are located at each of the corners. I'm one of those people who don't feel like they got a decent workout til you are sweating...and boy, in this class, you drip buckets from the get-go! Really feels like you are sweating out toxins, fat, whatever it is you wanna get rid of! Its a nice mixture of vinyasa flow and bikram balance poses. One optional perk of these classes is the 8 minute tantric yoga deep relaxation at the end of class. You assume savasana (dead man's pose) and the teachers take you through a series of visualization exercises, and its a nice way to just ground you. And you don't feel guilty at all just lying there since you earned it! Someone even fell asleep in the deep relaxation part of class (though that is not the point) So, if you're in the area, its a good place to try out. Less competitive and intimidating than Bikram and Corepower. A good range of levels, and they do provide modifications for people (such as allowing someone to hold the wall for balance if necessary). I would consider returning in the future depending on the deals and if availability of classes better align with my schedule. read more

I took advantage of the 2-week free intro challenge, and couldn't have been more grateful for this studio! The owner, Michele, is very nice and patient. For my first class, she personally found a good "first-timer" spot for me in the heated room, and when class finished she showed me where to clean and hang my used mat. All the teachers seem to follow the same sequence of poses, and they are great with suggesting variations based on a student's abilities. What I love the most are their Sun Yoga Flow and Yin classes. I'd never tried hot yoga before joining the Sun Yoga studio, and to be honest, my expectations weren't sky high. My past experience of yoga included a few uninspiring sessions at the UHM Leisure Center and a free Sunday class at the Lululemon store (actually fun, but the swarm of attendees meant having to downward dog in the changing room). But I'd purchased the Crowdsavings coupon on a whim, and $18 for two weeks of unlimited classes seemed like a sweet deal. (Sweet deals are my kryptonite.) Fast forward to two months later and I'm still here! And still sore, haha. (I never knew suffering could be so addicting.) If you do the yoga challenge of 8 classes in two weeks, you get half off a monthly membership! I've taken classes with most of the teachers and I appreciate the different ways of teaching (relatively) the same poses. Signing up online for a class is a breeze, and it's nice that you're guaranteed a spot in class -- not necessarily your favorite spot to park your mat, but everyone is on the look-out for that elusive "cool" part of the room. I finished my 10 classes in one month promo and just bought a 20 class pack. I am officially hooked!! I have had Ami, Paula, Selena, Virginia and Shana so far and they all have a different energy; they are all wonderful. Since I've started, (in conjunction with my wonderful chiropractor) my shoulders are no longer tight, my back doesn't hurt, better balance and I have a much better range of motion. Amazing! I love this studio and all of the instructors! Each one has something special to share in each class they lead. Recently this studio started offering a variety of classes with a variety of temperatures to accommodate everyone's comfort levels. My favorite is their original sun Yoga class. Its the warmest, just challenging enough, but at the same time relaxing. I walk out of there with a clear mind feeling like I just had an hour long massage. My goal when I started was to become more flexible. Unexpectedly I found that I've gotten so much more from it. I highly recommend this studio to anyone of any level. read more

So i had 2 crappy experiences and 2 awesome experiences. I don't want to dwell on the negative. So moving forward because I was able to humble myself and realize that they deserved a chance to change and i also wanted to give myself an opportunity to grow and try to project what needs to be different in this world. i went back after my foolish outburst and took a great vinyasa class. The studio admitted the unkind atmosphere that i had first and third experienced and are trying to change it. I believe they wholeheartedly took my experiences and tough yelp review to heart. The last class i just had most definitely was what i needed. I'm super glad we gave each other another chance as we are all human and "love is the bridge that connects us..." (something close to that i think) and experience, humility, and the ability to change and grow helps create the way to that bridge. Not all negativity is bad if we use it correctly. I've apologized for my frustration bc it wasn't their personal faults and i was wrong and i thank the studio for graciously opening there arms and thoughts to me so we can grow together. SUN YOGA HAWAII is the best that happened to me in a long time. It has changed my life in such a profound way. Going there is like receiving a big hug daily. The team is so welcoming and loving and the warm atmosphere of the studio makes it so easy to feel good already before you even started. Each teacher has a very unique quality of sharing the gift of this form of yoga so it never gets boring. The main focus of the practice is GRATITUDE and what a great reminder that is. Very clean, bamboo flooring, and I love the infrared heating. My skin and muscles feel so good after being in the infrared heat. You can shower in there if you need, it's only cool water, though. Adequate changin areas and storage for your belongings. The instructors are ALL good, each with different mannerisms and teachings. Poses similar to Bikram, but classes are 60 minutes instead of 90 minutes. Although they do offer one 90 minute class at 8:30 am. I enjoy the 15 minutes of deep relaxation at the end of each class. Lots of parking, good variety of class times (either morning and late afternoon/evening). Bring a good yoga mat, cover it with a big beach towel (to absorb sweat). Also handy to bring a small sweat towel, and I've found it helpful to bring a HUGE thermos of ICE WATER. Important to stay hydrated. read more

Day! Made! Just walked out of a Sun Yoga class taught by Paula Ota and boy did she kick my butt. I LOVED IT!!! As we all know yoga is at your own pace but her instructions motivated me to go beyond what I thought was my limit. She kindly corrected my postures so that I could feel the benefits of the poses. What a great first time yoga experience in Hawaii (I do yoga regularly in Seattle). The teachers and students were all very welcoming and friendly. I even got local hike suggestions! The classes themselves are great. So many throughout the day with many different options. I liked the S yoga option (it seemed to match my hot hatha class the best). I also took a Y class. Great for figuring out how inflexible my hips are. The Y class is relaxing and focuses on stretching/flexibility using your own body weight. I found that the hour went by fast here and it was very calming overall. The classes were clean and a pleasant smell is noticed outside the studio and continues inside (some type of plant, not overpowering at all though, kind of a subtle scent). While using my phone to find the studio, google maps i think goes off of the google+ address which just shows honolulu. I generally enjoy exercising and have been taking yoga classes at 24 hours fitness plus the gym work as well. One day, a friend of mine told me about Sun Yoga and how wonderful it is. I was curious but hesitant at first since I already have a 24 hours membership. Anyway, I finally tried one of their yoga class. It was fantastic! The one hour yoga exercise which consisted of systematic series of asanas from warming up, standing poses, floor and cardio asanas and final deep relaxation in a heated room was very challenging but enjoyable. After the first class, I knew I am a big fan@ and my husband and daughter teased me of being totally crazy , waking up at 4 am to attend their 5.30am yoga classes....It is worth it! The flexible classe schedule makes it so easy for me to go last minute, whichever time I have available. The feeling of complete skin and body exfoliation when exercising in the heated rook covered with sweat is a challenge - a good one! I have to commend one special lady - Michele who was the first person I spoke with on the phone. She was exctremely friendly and helpful. I encourage yoga enthusias to try out sun yoga...... My workout at Sun Yoga is perhaps the most efficient and effective type of workout I've ever done. In just 60 minutes in a heated yoga class, I'm able to stretch, strengthen, detox, and relax. I easily torch calories. As a result, my energy level, strength, stamina, and immune system are much improved. It's an intense, challenging workout that takes me to my edge yet is gentle enough to allow me to rest when needed. Love the restorative classes, too. Convenient class times, excellent instructors, beautiful studio, and very positive vibe. Notes/Tips: * The teachers provide good verbal cues and occasionally demonstrate, but the class (heated Sun Yoga) moves fast. Familiarity with yoga poses and alignment is not necessary but is helpful. I have knee issues, so I am always modifying to prevent injury. * Get and use the app to reserve your spot in class. * Drink lots of water, and don't eat within 2 hours before class. * When I first started, I was concerned about not being able to handle the heat. Wasn't a problem. Go early and put your mat near one of the doors for a blast of cool air during class. Put the right corner of your mat on one of the dots on the floor. During class, do what you can, and then lie down and rest at any time -- no worries. Over time, the heat will become a non-issue. When I leave class, I'm dripping ... just like I took a shower with my clothes on. I've made peace with my sweat, and I now even crave the heat :-). read more

Well here is my review - giving you the GOOD, the BAD and the UGLY. THE GOOD - I have practiced yoga at Bikram Honolulu, Hot Yoga Nimitz and CorePower Yoga. And by far hands down Sun Yoga Hawaii is the hottest (temperature) yoga studio around. I loved that by the end of the class I was drenched in sweat....LOVE LOVE!!!!! THE BAD - lack of variety, all classes are the same.....I know you can say thats how the Bikram series works. However, I am talking about their Vinyasa classes. They were all the same even with different yoga instructors. THE UGLY - The last time I practiced at Sun Yoga was on a Tuesday morning - SELENA's class the class was scheduled to run from 530am-630am. Well right about 635am I started exiting the class as I had to leave for work....some of us have to work in order to pay for YOGA DUES!!! I was physically blocked by Selena - at the door.... She totally went on "Bully Mode" very un-yoga like by asking in a very strong tone "Where are you going? I replied: work! then she replied in a very aggressive way: "You are not allowed to leave early unless you tell me before class" I replied by saying " I am not leaving early I am leaving ON TIME!!!! it's 635am - on your website this class ends at 630am. You are running late. I was so in shock - not the way any yoga instructor should talk to a student....Not very yoga like....NAMASTE to you SELENA. This is when I decided to cancel. THE UGLIER - When I contacted the studio with 2 emails to cancel, 2 phone calls, and finally a text. I was texted back FINALLY that they had received my emails and calls and that someone would get back to me the following day. Well, that did not happened until three days later. Sufficient to say I had to call my bank and CPB took care of it by deleting them out of my auto-pay. Too Bad, that a horrible Yoga Instructor - could ruin the otherwise good experience I had before taking Selena's class. If you join - try avoiding her class. read more

I was here for the holidays and bought a class pack. - I've been to my fair share of hot yoga studios, and this is the hottest one I can remember. I'd recommend starting out in the middle of the room or near one of the doors so that you're not right next to the heaters. - Every class is the exact same, so if you like some variety, perhaps go elsewhere. - Most of the teachers create a good vibe and encourage old and new students throughout the class. - The studio is nice and clean, and they just opened a second room to practice. I did have one bad experience, however. They do prompt you to drink a lot of water throughout the day before because you will sweat A LOT, and I'll admit I probably didn't drink as much water as I should have that day. We got about half way through class, and I start to feel light-headed and nauseous. I head towards the door to try to get some air in the lobby, and I am physically blocked from leaving by the instructor, her reason being, "we don't want to ruin the energy in the room". I'm encouraged to go back and lay down on the mat. I lay down, keep breathing, child's pose to try to get through it, but in a few more minutes, the light-headedness gets worse, and my body is so dehydrated that my hands and fingers literally stop working and turn a claw form. I'm starting to get scared at this point and head for the door and am actually able to exit this time. After a few minutes cooling down and chugging water, everything returns to normal. I understand the yoga vibe and not wanting to ruin people's "energy", but I know my body better anyone else. If I know things are going downhill, and I need to step out, I need to be allowed to step out. It was ridiculous that the situation happened at all, and I witnessed folks in many subsequent classes stepping out of class with no issues. read more

Been going couple times now I really enjoy it. There's different teachers, so each one is a little different but overall not that far off. I wish this place had more deals beside the 2-week intro discount, then I'd go a little more often. There's lots of parking but can get busy on weekends like Saturdays. There is a bathroom and place to put your stuff. Make sure you bring a yoga towel (or some people have beach towels or hand towel), but you will sweat a lot, so yoga towel is best. Of course be hydrated before you go, but bring some water. There is a short water break during the session. I notice if you are well hydrated you only need to drink from our bottle maybe 1-2 times in one session. Place is clean and the heat is just right in my opinion! There's a lower heat room but I have not tried that yet. I do enjoy that fact that this place has a variety of days and times offered. read more

Today is my one month anniversary with Sun Yoga. Ive only missed 6days. I hurt my back 3 1/2 years ago. Ive been through all kinds of physical therapies, 2 Big Big needles, acupuncture, chiropractor , etc. etc. nothing has helped. Until I discovered Sun yoga. Finally the muscles in my back are starting to relax. Im starting to feel more flexibility in my back. I have longer periods of time with no pain. I finally feel theres hope my back may recover. I honestly feel its a combination of the wonderful yoga classes offered at Sun yoga, The incredible teachers who have each been such an inspiration to me, and those hot hot infra red flare lights !!!
