We didn't have that experience at all. The rooms were small and shared. My mother's roommate said that she had been waiting for batteries for her tv remote for 4 hours and that the tv was stuck on sports and on a high volume. She was still waiting for a walker as she had already been there for a couple of days and had asked for bedrails but they would not be there for a few more days. She also mentioned she had been waiting for hours for pain meds. When my mother asked about bed rails they also said it would be three days before she would have them. Upon arrival in her room there was a pair of dirty socks on the nightstand and a nebulizer that had a used mask and medication. We pointed it out to the staff and they shrugged and left them where they were found. My mother was in pain and we asked about medication. They offered Tylenol around 7pm and we had to request an ice pack for her knee. We asked about her evening meds and they said they hadn't received anything- we were concerned because my mother is diabetic and has other health conditions that require regular medication. The staff seemed unconcerned and dismissive. We received a call from my mother at 1:30 AM that there were bugs crawling on the walls, the room was hot, and they had not provided her with pain medication or another ice pack. She felt feverish around 3:00AM and we went to the facility and they hesitated letting us in as hours of visitation are only 8am-8pm. They had the nerve to tell my dad that my mom did nothing but complain. We were shocked at the lack of compassion. We felt so sorry for the people who rely on this place for rehabilitation and also for their long term residence. We strongly ask case managers who recommend this place to actually go visit and see where they are sending patients for rehabilitative care.

My wife's grandmother smells nice. There are nurses constantly checking on her and they are very informative. My wife and my Mother in law asked me to sit in with them for a meeting they have every three months. I did not speak much. I just listened to the nurse and the head administrator explain how things were going with her grandmother. Medications she's taking, her progress, etc. I am relieved. My wife had been stressing about finding a good place for her grandmother. So if she's stressed, well all the husbands know, than I'm stressed. Lol. Anyway, this place is full of life. I started to take pictures, but I was not allowed to take pictures of the residents, I was told by a nurse, but they had no problem with me taking pictures of anything else. It was for the protection of the residents, which I totally understand. Good for them, protecting the identity of the residents. Everyone there seems so happy. They even have a beauty salon in the home!!! They have activities and they encourage the residents to do whatever they want. They don't force them, they let them go at there own pace. I am relieved. When I saw grandma sleeping, snoring, lol, I knew everything was going to be alright. Oh and I asked some questions about employment tenure. Almost all of the workers there have been working for the nursing home for 10 years+! That's a great sign, because you don't stay at a job that long if your not happy. Thank you for taking care of our grandmother.

Checking into the facility, I noticed it looked a bit old and had walls being repainted BUT it looked and smelled very clean. Despite this, I has my reservations about leaving my mom. It was the first time that we had been in a situation where we required extensive nursing care outside of our home. Then, I met Lela. She is a nurse manager at the facility. Immediately she sensed my apprehension. I expressed that I didn't want to leave my mom. She encouraged me and offered reassurance. She said, "Maybe the building needs TLC and we're working on it but, I guarantee you, the people here are the best at what they do and you're mom will excel." So, although I was hesitant, I left my mom, and returned the next day and the next day and the day after that.... What I witnessed was truly remarkable. Having been a patient and being a Nurse Practitioner, I can tell you that medicine isn't always kind...except at Sonterra Health Center. Every single staff member that the facility has amassed CARES for their patients. They take their lunch breaks in their patient's rooms if they notice someone feels lonely, they come in with a smile at the beep of every call bell, they gladly change out food trays if the least bit of disappointment is expressed. Every single person has gone above and beyond to support my mother as she heals. They even provided my mother with a volunteer opportunity to do some social service, which lifted her spirits. The testament to the staff was that when it came time to go home, she didn't want to leave! I will never use another facility for skilled nursing. Hands down, the best place!!!

The depressing, dirty, dim lit entrance resembles a scene from American Horror Story and the poor service matches that. The first night my mother was there we called the nurse to help change her bed pan. An hour later no one had arrived and my mother was crying from the pain so I had to remove the overfilled pan while some of her urine splashed on me. When the nurse finally arrived I told her we didn't need her anymore since I did it myself and she rolled her eyes with a deep "UGH" and left the room. The attitude from the staff is astonishing. It's hard enough to have a loved one suffering while you worry about their well being but dealing with unprofessional health care workers who clearly hate their jobs and are constantly annoyed when you ask for help only adds to your stress. The food was also horrendous. When I showed them the pictures of the inedible food they served, they asked ME what it was. The dietician told me that the food was "standard" and when I asked her if she would eat it, she wouldn't respond. When I finally found a wonderful facility for my mother, Sonterra lied about submitting her paperwork which delayed the process. These people are liars who only care about insurance money and would rather drug their patients to stay in bed all day so they don't have to work than actually treat or care for their patients. I've told my mother's doctors to never recommend this facility to anyone and have also been alerting my friends and family in San Antonio to avoid this place at all costs.

Sadly we could not get Alma's availability back for Mom's 2nd therapy phase. Nonetheless, Jim was equally amazing. Jim concluded the therapy sessions by giving me an exercise program for Mom. I have since taken over Mom's PT 3 times a week. Thank you Alma and Jim, for everything! And thank you to Luis (RN), the coordinator who made sure that all processes ran smoothly. Then you must stop at reception and sign in electronically so you can be issued a pass. You know what there isn't!?! Adult diaper smell! Hospital smell! Old people smell!!! It is set up beautifully with separate halls dedicated to different attend to different issues. The level of care is second to none. EVERYONE is kind and pleasant. I have seen more humanity and patience here than ever before in my life. The level of dignity they treat the patients with is heartwarming. Their attention to detail is such a welcome quality... there are not enough wonderful adjectives to describe my experience with my mother here. We have recently moved to and have been independent living residents at Blue Skies of Texas East…read more(BSTE) for almost a year. BSTE is a Life Plan Community with a full continuum of care; Assisted Living, Skilled Nursing, Memory Care, Rehab Services and Hospice Care. This was a big decision that we had been researching and kicking around for several years while trying to make the best choice. After researching/visiting several differing venues (CCRCs, Del Webb, The Villages in Fl., Jimmy Buffet retirement communities, etc.) we settled on BSTE as our forever home. Blue Skies of Texas came out on top because it is both CARF certified and highly rated by Medicare. BSTE is one of only three CARF accredited Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRC) in the entire state of Texas indicating a very high level certification for care with management looking for continual improvement, which has really shined throughout this unprecedented Covid-19 pandemic. Downsizing appeared challenging until we finally committed to making the move. We decided an estate sale was the best choice for us as it easily eliminated a lot of unnecessary STUFF along with charitable donations because it was time to make new memories! The staff helped make our relocation extremely easy and the move-in amenities ranged from help with unpacking to picture hanging. The interaction between the residents and the staff is an unbelievable plus as all are very caring and friendly. Our neighbors and fellow residents are also extremely friendly, caring and always willing to give a helping hand. One can be as active as desired since the social amenities here are not only envious, but much more fulfilling than our previous lifestyle. As we learned longevity is attributed to 35% genetics and 65% social life, which is indicated by many wonderful BSTE residents. We couldn't have asked for a better place to live because it's like a cruise ship on land. We highly recommend this to all seniors looking for a more fulfilling, happier, and secure lifestyle.

My elderly…read morefamily member was there for approximately 2 1/2 weeks due to a fall and having to have surgery. This family member was suppose to be on oxygen during the day( which she was) and a bi-pap machine at night for their COPD breathing to help take off the carbon dioxide, which they were not. Giving the nursing staff the benefit of the doubt when they said that it was not in her clinical chart for the bi-pap machine, my family member started having high levels of CO2 build ups. When I called the front desk, I spoke to the director of nursing, I laid out the reason for the call and why my family member needed medical intervention ASAP and I wanted them to call for an ambulance . That nurse told me that she had personally checked the patient, and I was told she's not a 911 patient, that the patient was stable, vital signs were normal and there was no respiratory distress, and I could come to visit my family member if I didn't believe her, which I did. When I arrived at the facility, my family member was disorientated, having a difficult time breathing, twitching, agitated, and seeing bugs on the ceiling that weren't there, all signs of high CO2 levels) A floor nurse came in and asked what do I think is wrong with the patient, I said her CO2 levels are high causing her to experience all those symptoms, and to call for an ambulance, they again told me she was not a 911 patient, I asked then what is your protocol for when you do call for an ambulance or the patient needs medical intervention? I was told they have to get a doctors orders, I said to the floor nurse, then go get the doctor, which she did and left the room. I waited about 30 minutes, a PA came in since there was no resident doctor on the property. (By the way, that floor nurse told me she turned up her oxygen to a 4 liter level due to her labored breathing, not a good thing when you have high levels of carbon dioxide build up. Normally her oxygen setting is 1 1/2 liters. So that floor nurse KNEW my family member was experiencing a difficult time breathing.) The PA asked me what I thought was the problem, I said her CO2 levels are high, look at her, she is experiencing labored breathing, agitation, hallucinating, and twitching, He listened to her lungs, and stomach, and said he would call for a transfer. At the ER, the doctors tested her CO2 Levels, she was at 120,( which is usually coma levels) normal ranges are 35-45. She went straight into ICU, was there for 5 days, and doesnt even remember this episode. How could a competent nursing staff miss these obvious signs? NOW, if I hadnt gone to visit my family member that day, the doctor said to me that she would not be with us today. I wonder what older people do that have no family members to check up on them, do in a facility like this. Save your loved one and go to another facility.
