Just got a call from Lowes "customer care" person. Yikes, there was very little "care" involved. I…read moregot schooled about their "policies" and every sentence started with "Unfortunately...." When she asked what I "wanted" I replied, "as a customer, to be treated with more respect." When I mentioned that I have been a customer for years and used to love shopping there, she just kept asking me what I "wanted." It was a very surreal, aggressive experience and confirms my decision to divest of this once great company...that is, if they'll let me close my account.

I usually use HD, but decided to try Lowe's since they had cheap top soil. I placed an order online…read morefor a few items to start one of my many landscaping projects. I picked them up curbside, but when I got home, I noticed that one of the bags of sand was busted open. The way it was plastered on the side of my car, higher than where the bag was, means that the associate knew it was busted open and loaded it anyways. There was sand everywhere in my car and will never come out of the cloth seats. I took pictures and sent them to the online rep. He said I needed to return it in store and refused to process the $6 refund. I then called the store and they said they wouldn't refund it without the product. So now I have to load the busted sand bag back up in my car and drive the 30 minutes back to return it. I'm just going to return everything I purchased because that is absolutely ridiculous. Never again.

It's the rock you see the most around here and what makes the rocky walls of the Columbia Gorge. (Luckily the Columbia River Gorge is protected from mining by an innovative scenic overlay) Basalt is usually gray, but some has a beautiful slight purple tint. That rock comes from this quarry. I needed about 25 tons. We visited the quarry with the contractor's dump truck. It's a safety zone - hard hats, safety glasses, steel toe boots. We were able to mark with spray paint specific boulders in the pile that had the character and shapes we were seeking. Then they were loaded by very large machines. It was awesome to see some giant boulders which are normally used to make ocean breakwaters, 8-15 feet on a side. There are also businesses adjacent to the quarry that split the rock into about 2-6 inch sections for making walls. The advantage to going to the quarry is that the rock hasn't been driven to round by being transported and loaded multiple times. They also have larger boulders. Standard terminology includes "3 man boulders", a little bigger than 18 inches on a side and 3-4 foot, generally requiring a machine to move. Phone ahead for hours and procedures. It's a bargain too, maybe $30 a ton. I have also purchased material, including split rock, at their more retail outlets, Pacific Rockery. A great area resource for Northwest specific stone, guaranteed to last for at least another 15 million years!
