My experience with Sunkist Pools was extremely disappointing and ultimately resulted in litigation that ended with a judgment in my favor. The problems went far beyond a simple disagreement over the finished product. In my experience, the project was plagued by missed deadlines, repeated delays, days when workers were supposed to show up but did not, poor workmanship, and an unwillingness to correct work that I believed was clearly unacceptable. ### A 60-Day Project Took Approximately Five Months I was told the project would take approximately 60 days. Instead, it ultimately took about five months to complete. Throughout that period, there were missed deadlines and occasions when I was told work would be performed on a particular day, only for no one to show up. The repeated delays and uncertainty made an already significant construction project much more frustrating than it needed to be. ### Workmanship Issues I also had serious concerns about the quality of the finished work. One of the most significant problems involved a masonry wall. In my opinion, the workmanship was unacceptable. Among the issues I observed were uneven grout lines, misaligned masonry, almost every block was damaged, the wall was not plumb, and a portion of the wall appearing to sit partially off its foundation. Rather than satisfactorily addressing my concerns and making the work right, I felt I was repeatedly expected to accept workmanship that I considered substandard. I had similar concerns about tile work. When I pointed out what I considered shoddy workmanship, Al Braun's response to me was: "That's the way we do it in the desert." That response summarized much of my frustration with the project. I wasn't asking for perfection; I expected the work I paid for to be performed professionally and for legitimate workmanship concerns to be corrected. ### Demands for More Money The payment issues were equally concerning. Despite the fact that I had already paid Sunkist Pools for work that remained incomplete, Al Braun threatened to stop all work on my project unless I paid additional money in advance. I found it particularly troubling to be pressured for additional advance payments while work I had already paid for remained unfinished and I was still raising concerns about the quality of the work. ### Equipment I Had Already Paid For I paid over $10,000 in advance for pool equipment. Several weeks later, it had still not been delivered. Despite Sunkist already having my money for that equipment, when I questioned when my equipment would actually be delivered, Al Braun told me that he decides when my equipment gets delivered. As a customer who had paid for the equipment weeks earlier, I found that attitude and response unacceptable. ### The Dispute Ended Up in Court The dispute ultimately resulted in court proceedings, **Case No. CVPS2505486**. The court entered judgment in my favor, awarded me attorney's fees, and the mechanic's lien against my property was removed. Prospective customers do not have to rely solely on my description of the legal dispute. I encourage anyone considering Sunkist Pools to look up Case No. CVPS2505486 and review the public court record for themselves. ### My Experience I hired Sunkist Pools expecting a professionally managed construction project that would take approximately 60 days. Instead, my experience involved a project that stretched to roughly five months, missed deadlines, no-shows, workmanship I considered unacceptable, resistance to correcting that workmanship, demands for additional advance payments while previously paid work remained unfinished, disputes over delivery of equipment I had already paid for, a mechanic's lien, and ultimately litigation. Based on my experience, I would not hire Sunkist Pools again. If you are considering this company, I recommend documenting everything, getting all schedules and promises in writing, carefully monitoring payment requests against the work actually completed, inspecting the workmanship closely, and researching the public court record before signing a contract. read more

Wow. A complete disaster. They sold my job to another company and never showed up to oversee the work. The plaster is cracked and they blame shift responsibility to anyone they can. They drained the pool into the street, which is illegal as I live in a flood plain. I alerted them and they ignored the issue until I was reported. Mistakes happen, flexibility is needed, but Sunkist pools will be quick to blame and over-charge you once they do. The owner will be quick to threaten he will put a lien on your home if you don't pay after this quality of work. The sad thing is, it's obvious the owner has run a business for a long time but totally lost touch-- his own employees blame shift right back to him and no one takes responsibility. read more

We contracted with Sunkist Pools to refurbish our 20 year old in ground pool. A new pump was needed and we ended up replacing the tile as well. The crew that worked the job were professional, experienced and a pleasure to work with. JR, Arturo, Marco, Fernando and others did a great job and we are pleased with the finished product. There was a problem that came up but Nathan, the owner, worked very diligently to correct the problem and everything is resolved and the pump is working great and our pool is beautiful. I had Sunkist out to quote a total remodel on my 1967, in ground, block pool. They provided a very accurate proposal with detailed line items explaining exactly what they were addressing. I needed a LOT of work to get the pool operational but the absolute best part was they worked with me to find an affordable solution. I could not afford the whole project at once so we worked together to find a stopping point that would allow me years of use and then when I could afford the rest, we could pickup where we left off. My project included: repair of earthquake damage to spa overflow and pool side, replumbing the 45,000 gal pool with PVC (I had copper) and spa, adding anti entrapment in the deep end and spa, pouring a new pad and moving existing pool equipment, installing new spa light and running new wiring, repouring pool deck where repairs were made and adding cool deck and lastly they did an amazing job trenching, digging and getting the whole system ready for prime time. Not only were the guys polite, professional and punctual, they were so careful about the details when cleaning up after each day of work. I am ready to hire them to come and quote the second half of my project and looking forward to working with Sunkist again. read more

I called 7 companies for quotes to retile and replaster our pool. They all submitted their proposals, but only 1 did a follow-up call. The Sunkist pool price was at the top end. Brady, their salesperson, was a few minutes early, courteous, friendly, and easy to talk to about our concerns. He produced the proposal within 72 hours (on May 4th, we signed the contract). Their proposal was professional and not a single-page document like some of them had. I want a proposal that lists the details and warranty information. Al, the owner, scheduled the project on a Monday (May 8th) and our pool was done by Sunday with water. I can't say enough good things about the crew and AL! They were professional and answered all my questions. Sunkist pools know what they are doing. We got to know them since they were on site working almost every day until the plastering company arrived on Friday. The tile work was exceptional! The tile man even made some design recommendations, which we love. We are happy with our decision to use Sunkist Pools and highly recommend them for your pool remodeling. read more

We contracted to have our pool depth reduced and some other little items. The pool company we initially used was not perfect and the work was not done correctly. After the third attempt to reduce the pool depth we had Brady and Rob from Sunkist Pools come out and let us know what it would take to finish the project. Unfortunately, we had to almost start from scratch because of the prior contractor did not do the work properly. Brady and Rob gave us hope that this project would be done to our satisfaction. We were impressed with their professionalism and also the professionalism of both their workers and their subcontractors. There was only one item they were unable to fix from the prior contractor. They were able to complete the project in a matter of weeks where the prior contractor still had not completed the job after more than 4 months. They did an awesome job and we would definitely recommend Sunkist Pools for your remodel. read more

Unfortunately, I just now seeing the response from the owner of Sunkist Pool. Although it was incredibly well written the fact is that they never reached out to me. They never requested photos. They never did anything. They never tried to make things right or fix the pool. The only thing that they did actually did was to respond to my review of their services and quality of product via this platform. JR who was in charge of the project was knowledgeable about ALL aspects, professional and communicative throughout the whole process. Nathan came out and did some minor trouble-shooting at the start up. He stayed and attended to everything until finished. I can't recommend these guys enough. The response was "umm, we're really busy". I might not have hung up if the response was we're booking into April (or whenever the next available appointment is), will that work for you? 5 days after Sunkist Pools came back to "fix" my spa......for the 5th time....guess what, the rust came back again. Rob again promised to fix the issue. Once again he sent Arturo out to put bubble gum and duct tape on my spa. His own people told me the spa needed to be ripped out or the rust would never stop, but Rob didn't want to pay. He sure wanted us to pay him for the spa and pool, but now that he needs to fix his faulty work, he can't be bothered. See you in court. Sunkist did a major remodel on my pool, spa and decking. They started the job way beyond the date they promised. The pool plaster was a quartz and it has a white calcium like material building up. They keep passing the blame but do nothing to resolve the issue. I am sorry I used this company and would not recommend them. read more

Fortunately, Brady put my request in as top priority and was sensitive to the timeliness of the report needed. At first I was impressed that I could get Brady to come out for an estimate on some pool work so quickly but the honeymoon didn't last long. Initially I needed to have some stonework repairs in a couple of places along the waterline of my pool. During our meeting with Rob, another Sunkist consultant, we talked about a possible bead blast also to get rid of the calcification on the stonework and faux stone along the edge of the pool. Brady thought the repairs would be able to be done within a couple of days. Although I thought the price was fair I had to make a decision to forego the bead blast due to budget constraints. Brady told me he didn't think there would be any problem and would call me to arrange the work. The day before the work was supposed to be done, around 345p, I called to see what the status of this small project was and was told by Brady that they didn't think it was worth it for them to do the work at the price they had quoted for the specific small project. I understand the way business works but the very least they could have done was decline my project when I had stated what was in my budget to be done at the time. They dropped the ball late on a Friday afternoon which left me with no alternatives for another few days. I wouldn't recommend using them in the future! read more

I don't want to make this too long, but be very careful in your consideration to contract with Sunkist Pools. My work included re-plastering, re-tiling and replacement of Kool decking. If you're re-plastering (especially white) be prepared to provide your own professional for the start up immediately after plastering as what Sunkist provided was inferior work and could have "ruined" the plaster work if not for my own pool service professional. My real problem was the Kool deck application. From the beginning there were issues of it "peeling," broken out pieces of concrete with the decking and the "patch work" that was done was atrocious. After just one year, a blackish-patchy distinct discoloration made the Kool decking look like it had been trampled on for years and was NOT something that could be cleaned. Literally for the last year, I have been trying to resolve this problem with Sunkist Pools, even going so far as to have the Kool decking manufacturer involved who could only agree the problem was not a "cleaning issue." Nonetheless, the final "compromise" solution offered by Sunkist I decided was not acceptable (and doubt would have actually materialized). Sunkist Pools I'm sure, relies partially on recommendations, I predict they'll soon be out of business. Also, you should always be a little "leery" of a company who doesn't even have an "office."
