Sunny's is a small quaint Chinese restaurant In a former Baltimore rowhome that is run by a family of five, for who this is their main occupation and the extracurricular activity of the adolescents. Aside from the usual takeout Chinese food fare (General Tso's, sesame chicken, etc.), this neighborhood Chinese restaurant surprisingly offers very authentic flavors. The appearance of the restaurant is nothing remarkable, but their food is is excellent and prepared with care. Must-haves/try include the Crispy peppercorn chicken and Singapore noodles. The former offers a nice numbing spice in contrast to a traditional "burning" spice, typical of classic Szechuan style cuisine, surrounding a fried seasoned encasing with a center of chicken (think jalapeño popper). The latter is great for anyone seeking a more indo-Chinese kick. Having lived in the Pigtown community for the past 8 years, Sunny's has remained a staple for me where I can always get something reliably and one that reminds me of my favorite meals from home. Even more, I know that the price remains competitive especially in these growing times of inflation and that these funds are directly going to their oldest daughters college education. Sunny Carry out has been my "go to" place for Chinese carryout for some time, but my most recent experience was so bad I have to post this negative review. I ordered through my phone. The order was the House special Lo Mein, Hot and sour soup, spring rolls, and the Chicken Teriyaki combination, which comes with Chicken Teriyaki, your choice of white or fried rice, and an egg roll. Their menu, both on the phone and their printed menu at their business, clearly states that the Combo plates comes with "Egg Roll & Fried or White Rice" with a price of $9.25. When I arrived to pick up my order, they told me that they had included White Rice rather than Fried Rice. I asked them "why?" They told me that the Fried Rice cost $2 extra. I told them that's not what the menu says, but they insisted it was $2 extra, so I grudgingly paid the $2 extra in case. When I got home and unpacked our food, I saw that there were no Spring Rolls in the bag. When I opened my Chicken Teriyaki meal, I discovered that it was Beef, not Chicken. And the beef was so overcooked it was inedible. I called them on all of the above, and all they said is that they would give me a $3.00 credit on my next order. The explanation regarding the Beef vs. Chicken was frankly nothing that made any sense to me. So, in summary, I was overcharged, didn't get one of the items I paid for, and got the wrong meat in my Combo meal. And I'm sure I'll never get the $3 credit. I will go back to Sunny, but from now on I'll be ready to dispute any added charges by showing them their own menu, and I will completely unpack my order bag to ensure that a) everything is in the bag, and b) I will open the containers to ensure I'm getting exactly what I ordered. Veggies were perfect stir fry texture, not too soft or raw. Everything I ordered was good and what I expected; got spring rolls (2 per order), crab Rangoons, large egg drop soup, large veg fried rice, and Szechuan chicken (comes with small white rice) all for $33. A small family owned business, which I can appreciate! The prices are great, lunch specials give you a lot of food for around $5.55 and they sometimes have special deals posted inside the restaurant. Unfortunately, the food falls short for me. I've had food from here 3 times and wasn't quite satisfied. Today, I had the fried chicken wings and lunch special with sesame chicken and fried rice. The fried chicken was very hot and fresh, but it was a little dry, lacking in flavor, and not very crispy. Didn't hit the spot in terms of what I was craving. The fried rice tasted good but didn't have much in it; would have liked more peas and carrots in mine. Lastly, the sesame chicken was a disappointment. The sauce was good, but the dish came in pretty small pieces, very heavy on the flour and both the flour bits and chicken were tough and dry. Had to chew a lot to break it down, leaving a dry mush in my mouth. It's good for a quick and cheap Chinese takeout meal (and to support a local Pigtown business), but definitely pretty mediocre to low quality from my experience. Their take on Singapore Mei Fun is as good as you'll find - always get mine with roast pork substituted for the beef - and very pleasing. The pork fried rice reminds me of the stuff I fell in love with when I was little. Theirs is a bit of an oddball rendition of Mongolian beef, featuring as it does thinly sliced red and green bell peppers, but it's scrumptious nonetheless. With the "grew up in the DC Metro Area" thing going on with me, you'd think I have a ton of experience with fantastic Chinese food. You'd be wrong; there are several excellent places in DC, but most take-away places are slop shops that leave everything in a pile of oil, leaving me sad (and feeling slightly ooky.) Sunny Carry Out makes me happy. Their ingredients are fresh, the dishes tasty (and hey, the Kung Pao Chicken actually has a nice bit of spice!) and the fried rice is light and definitely not greasy (it even re-heats nicely the next day). As the name suggests, this is a carryout/take-away place, not a delivery joint. But you can call ahead and have it waiting for you when you arrive, though you may have to wait a minute or two if you get there super-fast, as they make everything to order. Sunny has a really good lunch meal deal, where less than $6 will get you a big entree serving, white or fried rice & a soda. Not to shabby! And they'll remind you to grab a soda from their freestanding drink cooler if you forget, which is nice. If you're super hungry and need to eat N.O.W. there are a few two-person tables, but isn't the best part of ordering take-away Chinese food getting home and eating it in front of the tv? Yeah it is.
