Popped in here after having dinner in this strip mall. It's a typical Asian grocery store with all your ethnic food products. There is a halal butcher off to the side (with what I am told as pretty decent prices), and all the spices and sauces and seafood and fresh produce once could want for. It is definitely not a pretty store like the Superstore up the street. It doesn't sell clothes, it isn't as clean. But the prices are cheap and you'll definitely find all the ingredients you need here to make your dish sing. Plenty of parking. But bring your patience as I can see how it can get quite busy during the day/weekends. read more

The owner of Sunny Supermarket is a greedy man.......the money stolen from the people by ripping them off will not be spent in good health....just remember that! EVERYTHING in this store is expensive, let me mention a few items here: 1. Persian Bread, used to be $1.75, it is now $2.59; this is while the store next to it sells it for $2.00. Furthermore, their bread is old as they buy the left over from bakeries at very high discount and then sell it so exensively 2. A jar of honey, the very same everywhere else is $9-$10, here at Sunny it is $15-$20 3. Peanut butter, everywhere it is $5.99-$6.99, at Sunny it is $9.00-$10 4. Bananas in Superstore is $0.57, the same brand at Sunny is $0.97! Stay away from these money hungry greedy people. read more

This grocer is in the heart of Flemingdon in Toronto's North York district. There are lots of packaged imported goods, such as Lays and Pringles chips in flavours that are not sold in Canada. They're a bit pricey compared to larger anchor stores like Food Basics or Walmart but for its convenience, you can't argue too much about it. Their food court selection is below mid. It lacks flavour and boldness and it is not compensated by its price. Their spring rolls aren't flaky or crispy, no spices or anything - just plain veggies with barely any salt. Oh, and any of their food doesn't taste any better when microwaved. I would say go to Shaheen Tikka a short walk away if you want good food. The workers are good at what they do - professionally adorned in their purple suits. Classy. I don't think I've ever came in here and not found what I was looking for. read more

So glad a market like this has come into "the hood". Don Mills and Flemingdon gets a pretty bad rap, and like most "hoods", businesses generally don't go into the area, more or less a decent one. This Sunny location is about as close to being a T&T as you get, its large, spacious and even has a hot food table for table, and for my money better than T&Ts. They've got your typical asian market fare, along with the bbq stand and fresh seafood. This strip mall had seen it's better days, and now with a fairly new flagship store along with a new Shoppers Drug Mart, you know you're on the road to recovery when a new Timmys is also coming in. It's only a starbucks away from being fully rehabbed, If you're looking for a T&T alternate, and something bigger/cleaner than other asian supermarkets, this is a great option. read more

Your standard grocery shop with all of the essentials and more. They have a plant section however a lot of their bamboo are a bit dried out. I've never tried their takeout options which consists of your average noodles rice and meats but they have a splendid little bubble tea section. I was able to pick up two (fresh fruit) honeydew smoothies with tapioca for $6 which I find a steal. read more

I've been a regular at this store for years. Great inexpensive grocery store, produce is more fresh than even the chain supermarkets. Large amount of products including spices, cereals, meats, fish, bread, including Chinese take-out inside the grocery store. Customer service today was a complete zero. I picked up some ginger, sign says $1.39/lb. The ginger is bundled in a very large mesh bag, about 10 pieces inside. Now I only needed 2. Don't really understand why Sunny Foodmart bundles their ginger rather than leaving it loose like all the other produce and allowing customers to choose how much they want to purchae. I picked up a plastic bag, placed 2 pieces and tied the bag. When I get to the cash register, the cashier advises she's going to charge me $5.99/lb for the ginger... Are you kidding me? After instructing her to remove it, the cashier was showing attitude, bagging my groceries in a very rough manner shoving food inside the plastic bags. Very disrespecful! I'm so puzzled by this, why is the ginger all bundled in mesh bags??? Why not let customers choose how much they want? What if I was a senior citizen and only needed 1-2 pieces. Do they expect everyone to be forced to purchase more than they need? Same business going on here with the bananas. Extra charge for wanting to purchase 4 bananas instead of 5? Oh please! When someone told me that there was another Asian grocery that was sort of "like" T&T I was all "PFFT. No one does Asian groceries like T&T". Then we got a flyer for Sunny's. $4.99/lb LOBSTER! LOOOOOOBSTER!!!! So needless to say their advertising worked on me and we were there the next day. Sunny's is the type of place that I remember T&T used to be - cheap. CHEAP! Its fairly well maintained, has crazy deals like $1.99 for a box of salad mix, $1 watermelons and 99c/lb cherries, and a ton of imported Asian goodies like dried spicy cuttlefish. What? You haven't tried the cuttlefish? THEN YOU HAVEN'T TRIED LIFE! Their prices are pretty great and I love that their meat and seafood sections were given their own designations in the store instead of slammed into one large counter. They also have a wide variety of everything Asian - east, west, south...whatever. They have a halal meat counter which was packed with people getting meat as well as a large variety of Indian spices and other goodies. The one disappointment to me was their bakery section. Where were the pork buns!? Also the hot food selection looked tasty but was small. All in all shopping at Sunny's was a great experience. We filled up the trunk with groceries for the next couple of weeks for $70! I do feel like I cheated on T&T though, but you sleep with the corporate bitch, you get the horns! My mom took me here once on the way to Iqbals for some produce. OMG. I LOVE THIS PLACE. It's like a T & T (I freakin' love them!) but with a mom and pop kinda feel. Sunny Supermarket has been slowly expanding within the city as they have become something of a household name in hybrid supermarkets catering to both east and south Asians. Earlier on, they had something of an identity crisis, but now they have found the right balance of selections from Indian to Chinese and everything in between. The food is consistently fresh, the place is remarkably clean (compared to other supermarkets) and the people are friendly, but it's always packed and you may run into some shove happy customers. Other than that, they have definitely breathed new life into the once failing Plaza but now with the increased foot traffic, the future is looking better for Flemingdon Plaza. read more

Sunny is my new go-to Asian grocery store. I used to make the trek to T&T in Markham just to buy Asian goods, but Sunny has the same (if not better) selection and is much closer. The parking lot can get a little busy and cramped, but there's enough spots around the store if you're willing to walk. The store is smaller than a regular T&T but I don't find it to be crowded. I was really pleased with the broad selection of Filipino foods. They had every brand I could think of, and they had products I didn't even know existed here in Canada (halo-halo mix, frozen turon). I also buy my week's supply of fruits here. They're always fresh and last longer than fruits from Metro. I love the location and the selection. My only complaint is the unusual amount of "cash only" lines at checkout, but the cashiers are very fast so the wait time is not frustrating. read more

Fabulous little store with Middle Eastern and Asian food, in a rather skeezy looking little mall where some of the stores are closed. I hope Sunny and the big fancy Shopper's Drug Mart attract business. I made a wrong turn off Don Mills last month and spotted this place, but forgot where I'd been and wasn't able to find it on Google Maps. It looks like a very new store. Anyways, I went looking for it today and it's on Gateway east of Don Mills. I think this place is about the size of the T&T down on Cherry Street. Ridiculously cheap produce. There's also a huge bakery section, two or three fish/meat counters (??) including the one with the ducks and the pork pieces all hanging up and barbecued, and a hot food deli counter. And rows and rows of frozen seafood and other treats. Oh, and they have paneer. Highlights of this grocery haul: king oyster mushrooms, looooooong beans, fried tofu in a bag, and "Creamity" wafer cookies. Small supermarkets usually make me suspicious that they're going to be expensive and only have convenience food. But this place is bigger on the inside. Their Chinese BBQ is pretty good, especially for the prices they have. Two of their BBQ staff are from He He Long, my favorite Chinese BBQ place ever, and they took their expertise to Sunny when Sunny first opened. Had their roasted pork today ($5.99/lb cuz it's on sale right now), and the meat is tender and the skin is super crispy, but not to the point that it's hard and crunchy. The sauce is pretty good too. That being said, their meat department has an odd smell to it. It's an unpleasant smell I identify with meat that isn't at its freshest. Perhaps it's because they have salted meat containers that don't have lids on them? Perhaps it's coming from their fish department which is right next to their meat department? To be fair, their fish department has its own separate area with automatic doors, which does allow for some containment of the fishiness. read more

This supermarket was built from scratch as an addition to the back of the Flemingdon Park mall about a year ago. It's owned by the same Chinese businessmen who own the Sunny Supermarket in the Chinese mall at Leslie and Finch although this one is much bigger, fresher, cleaner with wider aisles and an better selection. It's aim is not just at the Chinese shoppers, but the huge muslim and non-Chinese population in the area. It's variety is so good that you'll see people from Leaside and Don Mills making the trip, but it's still mostly the local folks from Flemingdon Park and Thorncliffe Park. It replaces the Food Basics that closed a few years ago in the front of the mall which has been replaced by a large Shopper's Drug Mart. As you enter on the left side (you have no choice) the fruits and vegetables section is huge, with so much fresh stuff at prices that even put No Frills and Food Basics to shame. There's a smaller selection of tofu type groceries than the Chinese focused markets, but still enough for the average shopper. There's always a few things on sale and everything seems to be fresh enough since the turnover in volume is very high. Do be careful though since we've had some batches of apples or clementines go bad on us quickly. The vegetables do seem to stay fresher than the fruits so if you're buying to keep stuff for a couple of weeks then this may not be the best place, but if you're going to eat it all within the week then go for it. At the back are two completely separate meat counters. One is halal for the muslims and the other is for everybody else and contains lots of pork products too. In between is the refrigerated meat section. The prices are definitely better than the other grocers in the area. The people behind both meat counters are very fast and efficient and will cut up you purchases to whatever size you request. Going down the right side is a seafood room with tanks of fresh fish. I pick up lots of salmon fillets there for regular prices that are comparable to Metro's or Loblaw's sale prices. The staff are knowledgeable, but English can sometimes be a problem if you want anything beyond basic information.. Next to it is the bread section with a variety from the buns that Vietnamese sandwiches are made from to naans and other south asian type breads. There's also lots of the cookies and cakes you'd find at a T&T or other Chinese grocer and freezers filled with ice creams and desserts. Then next to that is the hot food counter including a Chinese butcher where you can get AMAZING ROAST PORK, as well as BBQ pork, roast duck etc... The food counter has spring rolls, egg tarts, noodle dishes, etc.. and you go to the end of the counter to pay for anything you buy at the butcher/food counter. Bringing you groceries through the check out is the same ordeal that it is in every Chinese supermarket, with fast and unfriendly cashiers. Just bring you own bags and pack your stuff away as quickly as possible. The faster and often shorter lines are for those that are CASH ONLY so keep that in mind when shopping there. The parking for Sunny goes down along both sides of the mall and in the back, but you can park anywhere in the mall if the areas near Sunny are too jammed. It's certainly brought a lot of life back to what was a dying shopping mall and it is much nicer than the original Sunny up in North York. read more

What do you get if you combine an East Asian, a South Asian, a Middle-Eastern, a Caribbean supermarkets with some Eastern European groceries for a good mix as well as most of regular supermarket staples? The answer is Sunny Food Mart! This is a fantastic store, and if you like to experiment with your cooking, this is a one-stop destination. It starts with a great produce department with so much selection that it puts bigger stores to shame. Next are a couple of isles of frozen foods where you can find everything from edamame to frozen naan to Pilipino sausage. The spice section is also amazing (who knew there are so many different kinds of curry powder!). Two meat counters (regular and hallal), a live sea-food section (look at all those fishes swimming around). And last, but not least are the prices. A week worth of groceries for two people is usually about $80-$90. read more

I used to love their hot foods which is a good price, but my experience today and witness it on my on eyes in front of me. A little boy probably about 7 yrs of age was behind the hot food counter, digging his nose and flicking his booger on the air. My cousin described this place as a 'dingier, dirtier T&T', and I'd have to say that's pretty accurate. Like T&T, Sunny has a variety of ethnic food items, not limited to East Asia, either, though I would have to say that each section is a bit smaller and less varied than at T&T. I found this cream soda that I drank when I was in Peru called Inca Kola - nostalgic! Too bad it was only sold in a 6-pack. I noted Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Indian food items, and also a lot of halal meats. The butcher counter is quite extensive and I'm pretty sure you can find just about anything you needed, offal and weird cuts too (I saw salt pickled snouts in a bucket in the corner!). There is a special room at the back for the fish market - lots of choices, including a bucket of live blue crabs. There is a hot food counter that didn't look quite as nice as T&T's (was kind of like generic mall food court Chinese food). The big assortment of produce is amazing - cheap and fresh! They had 2/$5 containers of organic raspberries or blackberries; unheard of in larger grocery stores! It does have a dirty Chinatown market-type feel to it though. A bit rough around the edges but I would definitely shop there again. read more

I mostly like this place - I really like their selection of multicultural foods and I could spend hours just browsing - but what I don't like is their onions. ALL ROTTEN!!! Stay away from their onions; they will turn all other onions you may be storing them with, to ROTTEN MUSH. You may at first think you are saving money. But after having to throw out all of your purchase (along with previously bought onions that were just fine until you added Sunny's onions to them), you will think twice. read more

Had a bad experience of rude staff at this store in the halal meat section. Rude and uncaring employees. They don t want to sell what a customer wants but what they want to sell , which is not good customer service. I was shocked when an employee told me that he cant sell chicken kheema (minced meat) if it is less than 6 pounds. I had to bring in store manager to resolve this issue and was successful in getting what i wanted. They should train their staff to be courteous and friendly with customers. otherwise this store had vast variety of products. read more

I love the variety here & the mix of cultures. The food also tastes fantastic. I did have an experience at the meat section though. I watched as the worker (asian) served at least 3 other people who happened to be Asian before me, who arrived after me. I snapped a photo of this man and will be sending it to whomever I can, and also gave him a good word, and had someone else help me. We've been going here a lot lately. Hits both our Chinese and Indian specialty needs for the most part. The hot food counter always has dirt cheap specials. Ridiculous things like 20 spring rolls for a couple bucks. Also bubble tea on the cheap. We scored two black tea for less than three dollars. They have durian pudding. Much more user-friendly than an actual sharp, pointy, funky durian. I also appreciate that it's big and spacious unlike the places in Chinatown or the bazaar that I haunt. read more

Part of the workers are very rude and abrupt. Overall, majority of the workers barely can control their emotion. The other part of the workers, take advantage of this personality deficiency and try to set out oriental style serving. Their customer service is the worst and appear the management does nothing to improve. Even worse, I complained to the manager about the incident that happened to me, and he said that I'm psycho. Spacious, clean, well-lit, with friendly staff, this store is nothing like other Chinese-owned food markets. I'm a big fan of their seafood section. You get to choose which fish/lobster/crab you want, and the staff do a wonderful job at cleaning. The only downside of this store is it gets crowded at the check-out lines. I wish they would cut down "Cash & Debit" to only 1 line, and have the rest lines dedicated to "Credit Card." read more
