Eh? Right on the lake, it's truly beautifully views but sadly the food didn't quite live up. If comparing the other big player on the lake, Garwoods is a step up. It was crowded, but we were sat quickly with a reservation. And the place is big and they had a lot of workers running around, yet staffing seemed to be an issue. Our waitress was wonderful, but she was our server, busser and everything else. Which resulted in slower service and and dirty plates. The table was small, and we sat with dirty plates for 20+ minutes while we waited for dessert. Again, not a huge deal, but when charging $30+ for meals and $15+ for drinks, one expects a higher level of service. :: Honestly, I would have much rather just bussed my own table if that was an option. :: The fish tacos were eh: sadly they were very salty. The kids burger was fine. While the Hula pie looks amazing, and is huge, the fam did not find it good. The nut ice cream didn't work. My father in law loves and eats all the dessert and he just had one spoonful and that was that. Overall, it was passable if you're nearby and want that on-the-lake experience. One star for the great attitude of the young people who served us dinner. They were very polite, personable and took great care of us during dinner. Also we had a beautiful view and eating out in nature was pretty cool. The weather was also pretty great. Unfortunately, we were told this place was a higher end restaurant, and we were told to wear nice clothes-- think dinner jacket, etc. When we arrived, we soon found out that our 'nice dinner' was eating outside on splintering patio chairs, sticky and grimy from all the little rugrats running around screaming at the top of their lungs while mom and dad got drunk on cheap beer. As for the food; it was disappointing at best. We never got an explanation of why they closed the dining room when we had a dinner reservation. Amazingly beautiful Lake views, Very nice room for the price. It has a slightly shopworn 80's or 90s vibe to it, but that adds to the charm for me. Place was clean and they have wool Pendleton blankets on the beds to boot. The restaurant was was pretty good, great burger and fries. The continental breakfast was well appointed. They have fantastic pastries and lox (fam loves it not me). The common seating area and the fireplace are lovely. read more

Came here with some friends post Fourth of July and surprisingly got seated immediately with no wait right next to one of the prettiest views! The food and drinks here were great everyone was super happy with their orders. I do have to say that the drinks are a little pricier and a bit weak, so stick with beer :) the food is also on the pricier side only because you are paying for that gorgeous view. July 2025: We visited Sunnyside again with some out-of-town visitors. We arrived around 11:20 and were able to get a table without a reservation. We started with the fried zucchini, which is definitely worth it as an appetizer. My wife and I then just split the fish tacos, which Sunnyside plated separately for us. My sister and brother-in-law split the fish and chips (also plated separately) and they loved it. We were really tempted by the Hula Pie, which we saw a couple of tables receive, but it is MASSIVE, so we passed this time. I suspect my wife and I will sometime stop by Sunnyside just for that (alongside a beer too maybe). read more

We stayed at the lodge and was met by an unprofessional manager named Don. When I called to make the reservation, I thought I was talking to the front desk of the lodge and was promised a king size bed with a lake view. When we were not given such a room and found ourselves without the view and on the end, listening to traffic noise, I became upset. Instead of offering, in a professional manner to help me, Don became agitated, argumentative and defensive . Someone else intervened to make the necessary adjustments and we were given the room with the view. It has a beautiful view, but I found the rooms and hallway to be somewhat rundown, with the bed sheets being worn from overuse. Closed for Lunch... on a Saturday? Classic. We took a two-hour drive--yes, two full hours--specifically to have lunch at Sunnyside with my 92-year-old mother-in-law, who was excited to revisit the place where she worked in her younger days. A nostalgic, meaningful outing... or at least it was supposed to be. Imagine our surprise when we pulled up on a beautiful Saturday afternoon and found the place completely closed. Not a sign, not a note, and certainly nothing on your website or social media to suggest that you'd be closed during lunch on a weekend. Because, you know, why would a restaurant be open at lunchtime when people are actually trying to eat? So instead of a heartfelt trip down memory lane, we got a parking lot view and a car ride home with an understandably disappointed nonagenarian. Two stars--one for the memories, and one in case the food is still good (wouldn't know!). Pro tip: If you're going to be closed during peak times, maybe tell people. We had an amazing lunch with amazing views, despite some (totally expected and threatening) rain that drove half of our group inside (the other half had full effects of the large umbrellas.) The Thai seafood dish had good flavor but really needed rice to go along. For $44 it should include rice as it's not enough food for a meal. A High School friend (who I've known since Kindergarten) was staying at the nearby Everline resort for a couple of days and wanted to get together for dinner. I made the dinner reservations at Sunnyside as I wanted a Lake View and they had good reviews overall (albeit with some variation in comments about cuisine and service). Bob is a real pizza hound, but my choice of Whitecaps Pizza was vetoed by Gayle and my friend's Wife. The only downside of our night out was the relatively long drive from Genoa and then back home (~1.5 hours each way and through a variety of traffic and road repair projects). But it was worth it for continuing an old friendship and enjoying a great evening of conversations and inside jokes. April is shoulder season at the Lake, so Sunnyside was a bit quiet with dining occurring in the bar area. We go our great Lake view, plus a distance vision of the Heavenly Resort. Seating was comfortable for 5 (including wives and one of Bob's friends) and relaxing within this mountain lodge vibe. I found the menu prices to be a little dear, but consistent if not on the low side for lakeside dining in the area. Our server was an established seasonal worker (who was just finishing law school) and a great one at that in any restaurant aspects one cares about. Tuesday was Taco night, but we all went in another direction. Bob and I both thought that our Fish and Chips choice was an excellent one, while Gayle thought that her Thai Curry Hot Pot was among the best choices in recent memory. Bob's Wife enjoyed her Mango BBQ Ribs, while his friend had good things to say about his choice (whatever it was). Dessert was a single serving of Sunnyside's Iconic Kimo's Original Hula Pie® which was more than enough split 5 ways. Yes, it was a great evening, capped off by Gayle and a woman at the next table admiring each other's post-red head gray hair. We had a gift card to use at Sunnyside and have been meaning to come here for quite some time. We live in Reno and come up to ski at Squaw every weekend, but often don't make it past there to Tahoe City. After a warm spring ski day, we decided to come check out Sunnyside to have an early dinner on their patio! They open for dinner at 4pm and there were several others groups who also arrived at that time to snag a great patio spot. They don't allow people to sit at the patio tables unless they order food which I think is a good idea. Otherwise, people would have drinks out there for hours and never leave. How could you with that view?! The lake view from the patio is phenomenal. We chose a table at the end of the patio that was in the sun and as close to the water as we could get. They even have lots of windows inside that would make it a beautiful dining experience when weather is not as ideal. I got a glass of wine and my husband had a beer to start. We wanted an appetizer and had to go with their fried zucchini, a staple that they have been serving here since 1965! I'm from the South and grew up with fried zucchini--I can say this is some of the best I've had! The zucchini slices are thicker than usual. The breading is light and crispy yet still preserves the softness of the zucchini. We loved it! My husband and I both got the fish and chips for our entrees. It was a unique take on the classic dish because this fried fish was halibut, not cod or haddock like you usually see. The fish was more dense and less flaky. Just like the fried zucchini, we were impressed with the batter and how they fried the fish. It was not too thick or greasy, it was just the right amount to go with the juicy halibut inside. Even the fries were great! We skipped on dessert this time but definitely want to try the hula pie next time, we were intrigued by the macadamia nut ice cream. We had such a great experience here! The food was delicious, everything came out quickly with only a short wait, and staff were friendly. The best part of all was the lake view! You can't beat the view here, it takes your breath away for the entire meal. Not many places can be better than this on a warm sunny day! Not everyone will agree with this review. It seems like people have had some spotty experiences here. Here are my thoughts. Sunnyside has one of the best locations on Lake Tahoe. The view is spectacular. The spaces are slightly dated and a little worn. Look at the view... Expect, as always, you are paying for the view. Service. The operation is part of the Dukes chain. However, it still has the same local feel. The servers are the usual young adults trying to make a life or a season in Tahoe. That said, they are energetic and responsive. I do think the food takes a bit longer to come out but look at the view. Some people not happy about the food. My advice, keep it simple. The Burger was great. I ordered the filet mignon. This is what came out. Dry hockey puck of meat that tasted horrible with a glob of slimey green stuff on the side. No other sides came out with it. They forgot, server Shawn brought them after the fact and they were also dissatisfying. But really, for a $60 entree, this is what I got.... ****Update: In response to this, management completely made it right by buying our round of drinks the next time we dined in. I'll start by saying this place has amazing lake views from the western shore of Lake Tahoe. I highly suggest making reservations or get ready to wait a very, very long time! We made reservations on OpenTable and arrived at the restaurant 20 minutes early. Thank goodness as it took us 15 minutes to find parking and 5 minutes to walk back. Leave time before your reservation to find parking...! Once inside, there's a line you must hop into to let the hostess know you're there and have a reservation. Thank goodness for the 15 minute grace period...! So now we're seated and what an epic view...! The servers are very busy and over-tasked so getting initial drinks, including water may take 15-20 minutes. Be ready to order. Trust me. Don't try to order drinks, then apps, then mains... go for it now because you might not see the server for a very long time...! Just get 'er done! Seize the moment! So we all split the calamari meh. Definitely had better. The Chowder was amazing! The burger and hula pie were also wonderful. All in all, we were here making our way around the lake and showing friends from out of the area around. I guess I'd consider going here again, but would maybe do it off season. Garwood's and Riva Grill are better suited to quickly serve the throngs of tourists during peak season; they're just further away from the west shore. I was happy with my meal, as were our guests. After a nice bike ride, we stopped here for lunch. We ordered the Mango BBQ Rib Plate, a Wedge Salad, and two Sunnyside Burgers. The Mango BBQ Rib Plate and the restaurant's ambiance definitely earned the 5-star rating. The ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender and delicious, complemented by the mac salad, cucumber, and rice, making for a great lunch. The Wedge Salad received 4 stars. While my wife thought it was decent, she has had better and worse versions, so it was above average for her. The Sunnyside Burgers get 3 stars, while enjoyed by my friends the burgers were just okay. They plan to explore other options on the menu next time. We were tempted by the Hula Pie, which looked amazing as it passed by to other tables, but we decided to pass this time. Disappointing visit. My family (me, kids, sisters family, six of us) were looking for a nice dinner the night before NYE hoping to have a nice meal for all. I am sad to report it wasn't nice mainly since many of the dishes were simply NOT GOOD. Two other reviewers said "the food is not good here" which I would echo but would mention I would ask all I our party if their meals were okay and rate them. I will review items so it might at least help those thinking about caving in and eating here. Seafood chowder: **edible but nothing special about this dish. A few pieces of fish which were not flavorful and hard to tell if anything else was in there. The broth marginal but not worth ordering again. Two stars since the garlic focaccia was pretty good Fried coconut crusted calamari: *bad and not that edible. One in the group that it was fried zucchini illustrating the lack of taste. Do not order. Yak bolognese: *OMG! how awful can a dish be?!? First off I have had yak at Tara's Himalayan restaurant in West Los Angeles and it was GREAT! This was a waste of yak since the bolognese sauce was something quite inedible. I would give zero or at best 1/2 star. Definitely DO NOT ORDER. Those were my three ordered dishes so my meal was simply awful. Yet there remains an upside: Chicken Wings *** were decent. my son ordered these and gave them a 3 star. I gave 3.5 to 4 star but only ate one small drum stick so his rating prevails! Lol. The chicken tasted moist, flavorful enough to satisfy most wing lovers. Mango BBQ ribs **** both kids shared this dish and liked it so that is a good thing. Apparently tender and flavorful. Apple and blue cheese salad. *** my daughter ordered this dish and loved the apples, arugula, candied walnuts but did NOT like the cheese. She said she loved everything but the cheese. Go figure. Thai Curry Hot Pot. *. Not good. First, this chef does not seem to understand when you use the term "hot pot' it means HOT POT. What is that? A large bowl of broth you throw in raw seafood to cook while it is simmering in the hot pot. This so called "hot pot" is simply a (bad) curry dish with some seafood tossed in. Complaint was there was little to no seafood in this dish. My brother in law even complained to the waitress his feelings of having a poor meal and she pretended to care but did not really as no meaningful response to this complaint came. DO NOT ORDER. Chicken tenders. **** nephew enjoyed these immensely so he was one who enjoyed their meal fully this evening. Bottom line: we spent too much money for too many poor dishes. Went here for my sister's birthday and it was great! Plenty of space for our daughter in her car seat, and they also had high chairs if needed. The server was awesome with recommendations, too. It didn't feel very professional when a group of six left, and not one of the four girls at the front counter smiled or said goodbye. We drove up to Tahoe from Reno for a nice Easter Brunch lakeside. Service was good, with more than enough wait staff, however the food was terrible! Frankly Denny's could pull off a better brunch for half the price! Buffet had cold eggs (barf), Prime Rib was cold, they started to cut them in 1/2, as they new they were going to run out of with more than an hour left in the Brunch window, they did run out (10am - 2pm), and they kept seating people. This food was what my father used to call "I don't care food!" There won't be a next time, with the cost of eating out so high with inflation, I am more selective to where we spend our money! read more

A bit of a let down after years of great visits. I've been coming to Sunnyside since the late '90s--first as a kid with my parents, and now as an adult, usually once or twice a year. I've always loved the food, the drinks, and of course, the amazing lake views. This was my first visit in a couple of years, now with young kids in tow, and I was excited to share the experience with them. Unfortunately, this visit didn't live up to the memories. The service was among the roughest I've experienced. I tried to be understanding--it was a busy summer evening and perhaps our server was new--but the basics were really off. Our fried zucchini appetizer came out barely warm and soggy, as if it had been sitting in the expo window too long. I asked for napkins, plates, silverware, and a drink for my child. Nothing arrived for over 8 minutes, and only after our entrées were brought did I have to ask again for the same items. It just felt disorganized. The cocktails, which I've always enjoyed in the past, missed the mark this time--both the Old Fashioned and Mai Tai were overly sweet and unbalanced. My wife's fish tacos were heavily oversalted and missing the avocado we paid extra for. I mentioned the missing avocado just to ensure it wouldn't be charged, but the server kindly comped the whole dish, which was appreciated. My filet was just okay--not bad, but nothing memorable. We had planned to get a Hula Pie as a fun treat for our child's first visit, but given the rest of the experience, we opted for ice cream on the way home instead. It's tough to write this, as Sunnyside has always been a special place for us. I'm hoping this was just an off night, but the overall experience didn't feel up to the standard I've come to expect over the years. My family has always loved Sunnyside, we go every summer. It's a beautiful spot and great vibe. We've always overlooked the mediocre food and high prices, but I think we need to move on. Last night they were clearly over capacity, the staff was overwhelmed and grouchy. We sat down at 7:15 for our 6:30 reservation, didn't talk to a waiter for another 20 minutes. Got attitude from our waiter and others. Realize it's a tough place to run -- and don't fault the staff...but better meals to have at other places closeby, without the attitude and markup. We enjoy the patio on warm days/nights and window seats during the winter. The menu has a good selection. We have never had a problem with service. During busy season we know they're doing their best. Parking can be tough but that is true of many places in the area, especially during busy season. We plan accordingly to avoid the crowds. It was an accidental finding but ended up with the best surprise of the day! The restaurant has an absolutely exceptional view. The window is like a frame for the Lake Tahoe landscape. Oh wow! The food quality matched the view! We ordered a few dishes with Asian tweaks. Both the cod and Thai curry with seafood are really delicious. We were kinda full, but didn't regret to add the dessert. Very salty. The fish & chips were so bland. Zero flavor in the fish or the batter it was dipped in. When I mentioned to the server that the fish was very plain, he said that's what the tarter sauce was for.... haha, NO! I hate ordering food if it's bland and it has to be covered up worth a sauce. I switched it out to the fish tacos and, at my request, lightly seasoned. They were much better that way, although it took forever for the tacos to come out. Service was not very good. After watching our server walk around, talking by the computers, not acknowledging us staring at him, we had to get up to ask for napkins and silverware. I had to ask for a refill on my water. It was like he was avoiding coming back to our table. It honestly took a while to even get us started. Honestly, the best part was the end, so we could pay to get out of there.
