Went to the bar for my twenty FOURTH birthday with my friends. The bartender immediately told us we needed to have two forms of ID to be served. He wanted our passport and drivers license with no reasonable suspicion that we weren't of age other than that we look young. After pointing out that's not a rule and that no one carries their passport around to drink at Lake Tahoe, he finally served us and seemed to have an attitude about it. After moving down to Reno from Tahoe City almost 10 years ago, we've only been to brunch at Spindleshanks in the last couple of years. We met some longtime friends for dinner last night and it was relaxing and tasty! We started off with some robust drinks and apps! Ahi Napolean was the highlight with the BBQ/Spicy prawns coming in a close second. Three of us ordered the Lemongrass Ginger Brick Chicken and it was tender and juicy with just the right amount of Asian spices. We all raved YUMMY!! My wife had the Rack of Lamb which she enjoyed and I got to sneak a couple of bites...tender tasty. My friend's son had the Grilled Ribeye which was massive and oozing with juice. The Finale! Dessert is never an option with my Sicilian taste buds so Tiramisu and Pistachio Cheese Cake sedated and cleansed our palates! The overall dining experience was good as we sat outside on the patio with a perfect evening and no bugs in site! It was fairly busy and the servers were definitely having to add a couple of steps in their service. Came here for dinner with my family and we unfortunately left very disappointed. I got the seafood linguini which was just okay. My husband and son got the burger which was boring, and my youngest wanted pasta with butter and marinara. The kids menu was confusing and we assumed it came with a side so we asked for veggies. When the bill came, we got charged $2 for the marinara and $7.50 for a side of veggies (2 pieces of cauliflower, 2 slices of squash and 1 broccolini). So his $10 kids meal ended up costing me $19.50. A decent place for some basic bar food grub. We went on a Friday for lunch and it was dead. I can imagine it would be a fun place to sit outside in the summer - the deck looked very inviting once it's warmer out. Biggest complaint - we ordered diet cokes and were given cans. Um, what? $4.50 for a can of coke? No thanks. I figured since they had a full bar that they would have fountain soda. Lesson learned. Burger was decently cooked and fries were tasty but has a short window of warmth/freshness. The Mexican Benedict was yummy and served with cubed potatoes. We came to Spindleshanks (what a name!) after an exhausting day of skiing. They have a diverse menu sure to satisfy all different cravings. I wanted protein and a simple prep. The pork chop was perfect. It was served medium and has just enough flat for that flavor. It was accomplished with an assortment of steam vegetables. I didn't think I would be able to finish such a large portion but it was too delish to leave any on my plate. The service was very personable and professional. Whenever we're staying in Tahoe City, we usually cook all our meals in the cabin, but we decided to splurge this time and enjoy a meal out with our group. We didn't need a reservation for our group of 7, and we were seated right away. It's a small dining room that's connected to a larger bar area, but it's quite intimate and cozy. We started with the steamed mussels, bbq beer prawns, and the salad special, which came with arugula, brie, pears, and caramelized hazelnuts. The mussels were some of the best I've ever had, so tender and juicy with the most delicious buttery sauce! Extra bread was necessary to soak up all the flavorful sauce. The prawns were okay, flavor was great but the shrimp were a little overcooked. The salad was nicely balanced with the earthy cheese, sweet caramel, and freshness from the pears and arugula. I got the short ribs for my entrée, the meat was pretty tender, but I wish the slices were thicker with the bone in. The short rib sauce was rich and flavorful, and paired well with the mashed potatoes and veggies. It was fine, it didn't stand out among any other short rib entrée I've ever had. The seafood linguine was probably the biggest portion of pasta that I've ever seen get served in a restaurant. The pasta was overcooked in my opinion, but the seafood was all cooked really well - mussels, shrimp, bay scallops, squid, and fish. It's worth it to order this just to get your money's worth lol. Everyone else enjoyed their plates of duck breast, steak, and pork chops. Service was friendly and relaxed, we felt taken care of and welcomed right in! I'm a regular at this restaurant and have been for over 30 years. It is one of the top 3-4 dining spots in North Lake Tahoe (along with new Savoir, and Wolfdale's, Za's & Swiss Lakewood) with extensive menu and great dishes from Steve, its owner and creative chef, and excellent value for fair prices. The happy hour is also great because it changes on a regular basis and features small plates which work particularly well for lighter eaters and are sometimes not available as dishes on the regular menu (Quail, calamari casseroles, ...). Also it is open for breakfast and lunch as well as dinner and has a very nice and spacious outdoor deck! read more

The reviews got us here only to be disappointed. My wife ate the brick chicken, I had the special halibut with clam chowder and my son had the rack of lamb. Everything looked nice but they all needed seasoning and or spices. The biggest problem however was the service. Our receipt says our server was Kevin. Either they had him doing too much or he wasn't doing enough. We ate outside and it seemed like we were an afterthought. We asked questions and before we could order Kevin wandered inside. We didn't see him for another 15 minutes. That seemed to be the order of the day. We would finish a course and wait and wait until he'd come out. We were ready to order dessert but waited so long my son went inside to ask for the check. I felt sorry for the other employees since they probably pool tips. Burger was pink, looked rare. The fries tasted WAY TOO salty, and were super hard. It was clear they were straight from the freezer and dowsed in salt. Caprese salad was a disappointment, we were told it was buratta but it was hard mozzarella balls on tomatoes that still had the stem on them. Not sure if there are new owners but they need to get it together because I haven't experienced a terrible host like that and horrid food like that. He made the mulled wine that I also got and wow it was like a holiday hug in a cup, so yummy! The menu and items that they served I expected to be at a higher price for what they were especially since I had schnitzel. My sister's boyfriend found Soindleshanks and we weren't really expecting much when we first arrived but the whole experience was fantastic! We got there early so no one else was there except us. Our server was awesome. She greeted us with a warm smile, was very kind, and checked on how we were doing throughout our entire meal. They started us off with some delicious bread and butter and we were told it was good because it was made locally in Truckee. I got seafood and it was made perfectly. The portion was also big so I was very pleased. All five of us got different dishes and we all enjoyed our meal. They were setting up for live music so we didn't get to hear it but we enjoyed the quiet atmosphere with music playing through their speakers.
