Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen made my morning when I was visiting Chapel Hill. The restaurant is aptly named and famous for its homemade biscuit sandwiches. It's a humble little store with a drive through and pickup window, but they churn out orders very quickly. If the drive through line is really long, I'd recommend parking in their lot and walking up to the window; it's way faster. Most of their sandwiches are under $5 and it's very filling. I got a Sausage, Egg, and Cheese Biscuit ($3.79) with a side of Gravy ($2.09) and to simply put, it was just good southern comfort food. The biscuit is crispy on the outside but flaky on the inside. I'd recommend getting the Gravy on the side though because the sandwich can be a bit dry. TLDR: Biscuit sandwiches that will truly make your morning. Make sure to get the gravy! read more

I found Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen thanks to Yelp, but this restaurant has been around decades before Yelp even existed. It's old school. The original restaurant opened in 1977-78 in Louisburg, northeast of Raleigh. This review is for the only other location which is situated in a small freestanding building in Chapel Hill, north of UNC's campus. While the Louisburg location has seating for on-site dining, this location does not. It's drive-thru only. We've read about and seen pictures of the lines for this place, but I guess we got lucky. We showed up close to 9am on a Saturday and there were only two cars ahead of us though a steady stream of customers quickly built up behind us. Sunrise is open during breakfast and lunch hours only. They open early (6am, Monday-Saturday and 7am, Sunday) and close early (2:30pm, daily). The menu is simple and the prices are very affordable. Biscuits start as low as $1.19 and can get expensive as $7.48 if you order their special "Bad Grampa" [sic] biscuit. The offerings are pretty standard. Nothing surprising nor inventive, just traditional Southern comfort food. They do serve sides like hash browns ($1.19) and grits ($1.59) as well as hot dogs ($2.39) and basic sandwiches and burgers (all $3.99 or less). The kitchen is tiny. During our visit, it ran like a well-oiled machine. Fast and efficient. They churned orders out quick without a hiccup. We ordered the following: * Sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit - $3.79 * Country ham, egg, and cheese biscuit - $3.79 * Biscuit and gravy - $2.29 * Bad Grampa Biscuit - $7.48 The Bad Grampa Biscuit is a chicken biscuit with bacon, egg, and cheese. Overall, my wife and I thought these biscuits were delicious. Yelp didn't steer us wrong here. My wife liked all four biscuits equally while the favorites were clear for me: I liked the sausage, egg and cheese biscuit the best followed by the biscuit and gravy. Those two were clearly better to me than the country ham and Bad Grampa biscuits. In the end, it really comes down to what biscuits you typically like. I personally love sausage biscuits. The biscuits were super fresh, soft, fluffy, buttery, slightly crumbly, and a little floury/powdery on the outside. They were pretty much ideal. The biscuits were greasy and a bit messy, but filling, satisfying, and hit the spot. These are not small biscuits. They're big. My wife likes country ham and enjoyed Sunrise's version. I'm generally not a fan of country ham because I think it's too salty. The sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit and the biscuit and gravy were just fantastic. I wouldn't have minded a smidge more gravy. As for the Bad Grampa, it tastes how it sounds. Heavy. While it wasn't bad, I actually wasn't a huge fan of Sunrise's chicken and prefer Chick-fil-A's more seasoned, moist, tender, and better-tasting chicken in their chicken biscuits. The standard biscuit sandwiches are plenty here, but if you like ordering the restaurant specials chock-full of ingredients, the Bad Grampa is worth trying at least once. The packaging was plain and unmarked. Each biscuit was individually wrapped and placed inside a white paper bag with napkins. The biscuit and gravy was served inside a foam box and came with a set of disposable eating utensils, also bagged. Service was great. We drove onto the lot at 8:53am and exited at 8:56am. read more

I found this place when we were staying in the area for a couple weeks and it had amazing reviews. I had to try it out. I rolled up to the drive-thru line and it moved pretty fast. I ordered 2 bad grampa biscuits with hasbrowns. I don't know why I envisioned grilled chicken breasts when I ordered, but I laughed at myself when it ended up being friend chicken--of course it's fried chicken. The bacon was rubbery, so I took it off the sandwich, but other that that it was pretty tasty. My hubby liked his too. However, no hashbrowns, so I was a bit disappointed and kept it to a solid 3 stars. This wouldn't be a regular breakfast place for me--one I would be a little fatty and two it's a little limited on choices. I'm sure they usually get their orders right because they have great reviews and the breakfast sandwich was pretty good. This surpasses Biscuitville and Dallas famous chicken in Apex North Carolina. The biscuit it's self was buttery soft and just overall yummy. The fried chicken was over battered and fried in dirty oil. The biscuit was mediocre, and they didn't offer favorites from the other location. The service was quick, but also rude. It's funny cause this location flaunts having the "best biscuits", where the other location really doesn't have any banners or advertisements. I would recommend the other location. The Carolinas (imo) generally don't do barbecue as well (too vinegary) as Texas and Kansas City and possibly Memphis (although there are some amazing exceptions like Backyard BBQ), but they absolutely do chicken biscuits better than anyone else in the country and this is one of the best examples you will find. You can also try Rise which is a local chain and a little bit more fancy and elaborate, but here at Sunrise, these are your typical staple homestyle chicken biscuits - dirt cheap and fresh and hot and fluffy and absolutely perfect. I have no qualms about giving them five stars and they are one of my 10 favorite places to grab food in the hole of the Carolinas. I mean the whole of the Carolinas. Chicken cheddar was just okay- chicken didn't have a lot of flavor & cheese wasn't melted. My wife had the bacon & egg- she felt the bacon was similar to the microwave bacon you get at the Hampton Inn. Egg was small and again, not much flavor. Ham biscuit was good with lots of ham but should be for $5.50. She enjoyed her Apple Fritter; my Cinnamon roll was overcooked and the juice was a no name brand in 8 oz container for $3. This place is definitely a local favorite: a simple drive through window with no indoor or outdoor seating. You get your biscuit and you get it to-go. When we pulled up to the window to order, I went with the basic breakfast combo: chicken on a biscuit, with a hash brown, and iced coffee. The biscuit was so buttery and delicious - it held up well against the thick, juicy chicken but melted in your mouth. The chicken was breaded perfectly and wasn't greasy or dry. I was not the biggest fan of the hash brown - that was soaked in grease and I didn't want to try and stomach it. The iced coffee was sweet - so I'm assuming, like their tea, iced coffee is a beverage you have to order "unsweetened" and then temper to your liking. Never heard of a drive through biscuit place before, but there's a first time for everything! The biscuits were a little dry and could benefit from some gravy (although how are you going to eat gravy-covered anything in your car) but overall we enjoyed our biscuit sandwiches (sausage/cheese/egg and the Bad Grandpa), finding them to be filling for the price and well-balanced in ingredients. To order one of their biscuit sandwiches, you first pick which meat you want (chicken breast, sausage, bacon, BLT, ham, pork chop, western steak, or no meat) and then decide whether you want the sandwich with egg or with egg / cheese. Each combo comes with one biscuit sandwich, hash browns, and soft drink / tea. Just a note - iced tea here is actually iced SWEET tea (my friend was caught off guard when he first sipped the tea because all restaurants in California serve unsweetened iced tea unless you specify for sweet tea). If you want something light, there's even a low carb platter. *** Chicken Breast Sandwich (two biscuit buns with egg / cheese, $5.69): Biscuit buns were ultra fluffy and just simply the best biscuits I have ever had.
