Hello, biscuits. My fiance went to school at UNC and knows all about the SBK life. We had visited for a wedding and she insisted on taking me their for breakfast! Now, it is a drive-thru restaurant - which means you just drive-thru or walk up to order food. There is no indoor seating .. pre- or post-COVID. This is a huge hit with the area, you can tell by waiting in a huge line of traffic early in the morning. I enjoyed my first trip to SBK and the double bacon egg biscuit and hash brown. The food is OK, not really good. The quality of their food seems to be declining, as We have eaten there for over 30 years. The las couple of times we have gotten food there is was not that good. The grits are really bland and the eggs were overcooked. The biscuits were dry and fell apart when we tried to open them. Once we got them open, there were chunks of dry flour that never got worked into the dough. We threw the biscuits in the trash. also, we did not get the food that we ordered. You can get their signature Bad Grampa breakfast sandwich (like i did) or you can purchase a breakfast combo and build the sandwich yourself for cheaper. Although the biscuits themselves are a step above, the rest of the sandwich is nothing extraordinary. They are the definition of a true southern breakfast. Better than Bojangles because there is more of a homemade feel to the meals. This was my first visit. Really great biscuits, I can't wait to bring others to try it when they visit us too. I had a small platter. My husband had the Bad Grandpa (and he loved it). I added my own butter and jelly to my biscuit - perfect texture, density, and moisture. Our bacon was good (not undercooked). They could've added less grease, I couldn't finish it, only had two bites. Sweet Tea (3/5): Mind numbingly sweet. If that's your thing, go for it. My recommendation: Make your own breakfast sandwich. The Bad Grampa is okay. You should get it if you're not worried about spending a little extra or want to try their signature breakfast, but I say take the time to build your own - it's cheaper. Ask for all of the sauces - honey, hot sauce, etc. Service: They were out of cinnamon rolls and grits about an hour before they closed. I guess I understand, but it was kind of a disappointment. Staff seems to work hard and provide you quick, delicious, and greasy food as fast as possible - they've got a long line to feed. Facility: It is oddly small, but damn do they pump out the biscuits! When I first got to NC back in 2005, I hit up Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen for their legendary chicken n biscuit and all I could think was, "What's the big fuss?" Time and logistics transpired against me over the years and I just forgot about SBK. Fast forward to this past weekend and I'm in Chapel Hill, re-living the Carolina experience. So of course, you gotta do the chicken n biscuit, right? Maybe I've just gotten a lot more experience with Southern food now but SBK dishes out a mean chicken n biscuit. Super-light, fluffy biscuit with a tender chicken filet on top. Big difference between SBK and say, Bojangles is that they keep it easy on the salt and grease. Yes yes yes yes! When my mom and I first arrived to visit my sister, we were on the hunt for biscuits. It wasn't until we left for the Outer Banks that we finally got to try Sunrise Biscuits. Oh man! They are amazing! This tiny little hut is easy to miss because it comes up fast while driving. Don't be intimidated if you see a line of cars - they move quickly! I don't know how they do it, but we received four biscuits so fast we couldn't believe it. We arrived a little after 9:30 am on a weekday, so we were anticipating a bit of a work crowd. Nope! Only about two cars were in front of us and like I said, the people at Sunrise work fast because we barely had to wait. My mom and I stopped by here once more before leaving for Ohio and grabbed some biscuits for the road. I've ordered sausage, egg, cheese and tomato and chicken, cheese, tomato, and lettuce. Both were roll-your-eyes-back-and-sigh type of good. Seriously - they are just shy of crunchy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. I also took a bite of the pimento cheese - W O W. This is the second of a two restaurant mini-chain that began in Louisburg, NC in 1978 -there are some other biscuit restaurants with Sunrise in their name, but the one here is only associated with the one in Louisburg (website - sunrisebiscuits.com/) The menus are, of course, very similar, as is the operation in general - the one in Louisburg does have some inside seating as well as a drive thru. The Chapel Hill location has achieved an iconic status for a lot of folks - some credit for this is undoubtedly due to the student population that often grazes here, good for business but rarely a beacon leading to great food, regardless of cuisine type. I like the biscuits here, but I don't think they're the best, not even the best in Chapel Hill - both TimeOut and BoJangles have a better stand-alone biscuit, and frankly, a number of places put together a better breakfast biscuit than Sunrise (Biscuitville, for example) - but, these are good biscuits, and I like them, but I like others more. The Bacon, Egg, and Cheese Biscuit ($3.29) we ordered was just ok - the bacon was limp, not at all crispy; the egg was one of those scrambled layer things identifiable as an egg product only by the yellow color & a certain amount of trust, thin and dry; and the cheese was not melted. The biscuit itself was nice. I ordered a Hot Dog here, for the first time, and was very pleasantly surprised. Visually, it is not the best looking Chili Dog I've ever ordered - the chili is meaty, but very dark in color, the bun, while soft, is rather wrinkled looking, and the onions are coarsely chopped, somehow failing to blend into the overall dog. But, the taste was very, very good - this is a dog I'd order again - not saying it is a Destination Dog, but it definitely is a Ride BY Dog. read more

I'm really sad that I have to change my review for sunrise. I moved to Durham and I was really excited to get breakfast in Chapel Hill. I went and ordered my usual which is a chicken biscuit sandwich with egg, bacon and pimento cheese. I also ordered a cookie, cinnamon roll and hash brown. I pull up and pay and as I drive away realized I didn't add the cinnamon roll to my order and didn't packet. I had to park and go purchase that on my own. That was kind of annoying to do since I went to the drive-through. I drive back to Durham to find out they gave me the wrong sandwich. I get it things are really crazy right now with COVID-19. I'm very disappointed that I didn't get the sandwich that I ordered and that they miss the cinnamon roll my original order and I had to park and go to the walk up to order that. read more

The biscuit was obviously handmade and very fresh, the bacon had the perfect crispness, and the egg was not rubbery like a Goodyear tire that you may find at some franchise competitors. They're doing one thing, and they're doing it right. I came on a muggy summer day mid June and service was speedy, I mean the sandwich is literally a full meal. I got word of these biscuits by a UNC alum and I figured I would take their advice. The place looked shabby enough to serve up good stuff. It's a drive through, nothing exquisite, just good ol' fashion southern biscuits that just so happen to be delicious. My partner said she frequented this place while attending and they were always consistent in their product. I got egg and cheese, she got the chicken with egg and cheese. I took a bite of hers it was good, I feel like I would give 5 stars if it weren't so dry. I do recall wanting some kind of aioli. Well you can't satisfy everyone, however I know majority of the folks are pleased or they wouldn't be in business. I had high hopes for this restaurant right off the bat as the car line for it went down the street. The staff was obviously stressed and in a rush, but very nice handing off our food. We went across the street and ate right next to a rose garden (highly recommend visiting). My friend is vegetarian and ordered the breakfast platter, but was sad to find that they left out his biscuit from the order. I ordered the Bad Grampa with lettuce and ended up giving him my top bun and using the lettuce instead. Definitely come here for the biscuit sandwich. The chicken was perfectly cooked: crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The grits was scorching hot when we got them, but was a good portion. Overall, a very delicious biscuit. This is a drive in biscuit house. The place itself is very small and unassuming, but man... Their biscuits are delicious and very large. We ended up getting too much food because based in the prices, it should have been WAYYY less food. But regardless, it was delish. I got chicken, egg and gravy in mine and it was really great. The chicken is fried chicken which was yum. Without the gravy it would have been pretty dry, but with the gravy it's extremely messy, so beware of your surroundings. Just an FYI, the gravy has sausage pieces in it. I wish they had a vegetarian gravy to use if you only wanted egg and cheese in the biscuit. Would come back here again! read more

The food is excellent!! I'm visiting from Phoenix, Arizona for graduation. When we pulled up and saw the ladies in the back cooking, I KNEW it was going to be good. The biscuits . Best. Biscuits. Ever. I love going here just to grab a bite before work or catching up with friends. Their warm and fresh biscuits are sublime and I would recommend it to anyone coming into town! The donuts have really unique favors, such as Maple Bacon. I am always sure to get Creme Brulee and the Glazed Blueberry whenever I visit. When in Chapel Hill during breakfast time it is a requirement for us to drive thru Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen. The line can get pretty long. We arrived at around 9 AM and were about the 6th car in the drive thru. We have seen the line back up onto Franklin St. But no worries because the line moves quickly. There is quite a large menu selection but we always get the breakfast biscuits. Today we tried the sausage, egg and cheese biscuit. By far the best biscuit we have ever had from Sunrise. Biscuits are fresh and flaky. We especially loved the spiciness of the sausage. Can't wait to come to the "Hill" during breakfast time again !! YUM ! read more

Wow, just wow is the way to describe this place. This is all the type deserved and then some. This is one of the best grab and go breakfast spots in the triangle area. We stopped here the morning of a Tar Heel game day so as you can imagine it was pretty packed. It has a tiny drive thru which can get backed up into the road. We ended up parking at one of the building next door and using the walk up counter which is probably the quicker option. Counter service was very friendly and helpful. My bf got the Bad Grampa sandwich which is a fried chicken, bacon, egg and cheese sandwich on a mouthwatering biscuit, he said it was one of the best breakfast sandwiches he's ever had. I got the bacon egg and cheese on a biscuit as well which was equally as amazing. When I first moved here I got breakfast at sunrise almost once a week. The chicken is perfectly fried! You will not find a better chicken biscuit. It is FAST the line is often backed up into the street and I never feel like I wait very long at all. Cinnamon bun is great.
