We walked in today and grabbed seats at the bar. We'd never been here before, so we just ordered whatever I was craving since my iron is low and all I wanted was steak. We started with the French onion soup and it was so yummy. My only complaint is I wish it had more cheese... and more cheese stuck to the sides of the bowl because picking off the crispy cheesy parts is literally the best part. Mmmmm. Nice that they split it into two bowls for my bf and I to share! I got the steak frites. It was good, but my only complaint is it was salty. Like... salty salty. Both the steak and the fries were pretty heavily seasoned. My lips were starting to burn by the end lol. I also wish it came with garlic aioli. I saw the regular fries on the menu are served with it, and now I'm mad at myself for not asking to swap. Overall though, the service was great! Excellent experience! The chefs were excellent. I hope they know the food they created was so delicious and was changing lives in that dining room. Our server was great and very knowledgeable on the menu and had great wine recommendations. The Soupe aux Haricots Cannellini was creamy and delicious. The big chunks of bacon were pleasant and tasty finds within the soup as well. The beef tartare was perfectly prepared and paired well with the small pieces of toast that came with it. Every bite of the poulet toulousaine (sausage-stuffed chicken) was delicious. Each bite was juicy and very well-seasoned. The fondant potatoes were so soft and good. We had Sunday brunch here during a visit to UNC. We sat outside, which as nice, even with the rain. The inside was bustling and a big loud, plus the AC was pretty cold, so the patio was fine. The service was very "Parisian"--they left you alone but were there when you needed a server. The omelettes were divine. We had the "supreme" which is off the menu but is a combo of ham and mushrooms. The eggs were silky and the potatoes on the side err smashed fried potatoes with caramelized onions. My son had the gnocchi which was quite good. The morning bun was the hit, though, and a must-get when you go. The have a pretty impressive bar program, too. I had an appointment in the area and decided to explore the town for some eats. I saw this was a super popular restaurant in the area with great reviews and I completely understand why after visiting. The staff was super friendly and nice. They genuinely seemed to love working there and their energy made my bar experience that much better The food was out of this world. The Tartare de Boeuf was delicious. The beef tasted so fresh and went well with the crostinis. But the Confit de Canard easily stole the show. The skin on the duck was so crispy and added a nice crunch to every bite. The duck itself was also so tender which made each bite that much more satisfying. Another wonderful dinner and service at Bluebird. Our favorite person, Alex, was our server again and he always brings the great recommendations, good chat, and laughs. We went around 5:45pm for dinner and our food came out quickly, but we never felt rushed. Tried a lot of new food items and everything was outstanding as usual. The oysters were fresh and paired perfectly with their champagne mignonette and a fresh squeeze of lemon. The trout was buttery and melt in your mouth. The sauce and veggies created a harmonious dish filled with a balance of salt and acid. The roast chicken was some of the most tender chicken I've had recently. I loved the creamy mash and having all the components of the dish in one bite was perfection. I was honestly surprised at how much I enjoyed this seemingly simple dish. I was REALLY blown away by the pork dish. I usually don't enjoy pork as much, but tried some anyways, and I am so glad I did. It was incredibly juicy and well-seasoned.. didn't even need the sauce (although it was a lovely addition). The polenta was well-cooked and crispy on the outside. It was just okay on its own, but the sauce took it up a notch. The steak frites was great-- cooked medium rare and seasoned perfectly. Also, it was a nice thick piece. The horseradish was milder than I had anticipated, but was a nice bite all together. The fries were nice and crispy-- there were just a lot of them and some of them were a tad salty. The dessert was pretty good- a tad dry, so I could have used a lot more of the blueberry compote and whipped cream. The crunchy almonds were the best part. I booked a table for my grandmother and myself back in September of 2023 for a belated birthday dinner. We had an absolutely wonderful time. The food was amazing and had a tailored wine list to match. The service was perfectly timed and never interrupted deep, meaningful conversation. Not to mention the beautiful atmosphere of feeling like we were actually in France dining, one of my grandmother's favorite places. When I booked my reservation I made a few notes about my grandmother being my guest for the evening, with one simple request: that she drinks unsweetened iced tea with lemon. One thing about me, I notice everything. Every teeny, tiny detail. It is my superpower. When we first sat down, I noticed an employee coming through the front door with a to-go cup filled with tea. Shortly after, our waitress appeared at our table, a sparkling water for me and an unsweetened iced tea with lemon for my grandmother. Grams was surprised that she didn't even need to ask - I just gave her a wink. Not once was it ever mentioned that they do not have iced tea on the menu. There was no embarrassing moment, no explanation, no denial of beverage, they just made it happen behind the scenes. Throughout our dinner, I saw what I now know to be the General Manager, Aaron Way, make his rounds across the dining room floor, touching tables and pouring wines. He was so kind and so sweet to my grandmother whenever he made his way to us. This review is to personally thank you, Aaron. It was you that went next door to get her tea. I saw you, I noticed, and I appreciate you. I am sorry I did not write this sooner to tell you that and show my gratitude. Bluebird is a consistent gem. I've been here multiple times for both dinner and brunch, and it never disappoints. This past weekend's visit was especially impressive -- the service was exceptional, warm, and attentive without being overbearing. I had the quiche Lorraine this time, and it was absolutely spectacular -- rich, flaky, and perfectly balanced. They also offered passion fruit mimosas, which were a welcome twist on the classic and added a bright, tropical note to the morning. We weren't sure what wines we wanted so let us taste a few before we made our decision. To start we started off with the salad de laitue which was light and refreshing. We had a great dinner at Bluebird. I give this restaurant 4.5 stars rounded up to 5. I recommend it for a nice meal out in Chapel Hill. Being big fans of sister restaurant Hawthorne & Wood (https://www.yelp.com/biz/hawthorne-and-wood-chapel-hill), my wife and I had high expectations for Bluebird. Those expectations were met. The food, drink, and service here were excellent. Understanding the restaurants are different -- Hawthorne & Wood is casual fine dining and Bluebird is a French bistro -- if I had to pick between the two, I'd give the edge to Hawthorne & Wood simply because the food and drink there wow'd us more. That said, both are among our favorite restaurants in Chapel Hill. Bluebird is located in Meadowmont Village, just down the road from Hawthorne & Wood in East 54. My wife and I walked past Bluebird shortly after it opened in July 2022. It was during one of their Sunday brunches and the patio was bustling. It looked like the place to be. Bluebird serves brunch every Sunday, 10am-2pm. They're only open for dinner, Tuesday-Saturday, otherwise. This place has been popular from the get-go. Reservations are recommended. The restaurant is beautiful, from the mosaic tile flooring to the storefront drapes to the five-bulb fixtures. There's a fine attention to detail here, both in the interior decor/atmosphere and in the food and drink. I love the open kitchen. I like how the menu unfolds. The patio is spacious and covered. In addition to the main dining room, there's a bar and a private room that can seat up to 24 people. We were seated in the private room. Our group of four had a Saturday 6:45pm reservation. The restaurant was packed when we arrived. We stayed for three hours and it was still busy when we left, about 45 minutes after closing time (9pm). Below is a list of what we got, except for a few drink orders (I'm missing those). This should give you a good idea of what Bluebird has to offer for dinner, what the cocktails are like, and pricing. High quality. The one thing that stuck out about the drinks to my wife and me was they weren't that strong. That's saying a lot coming from a lightweight like me. The cocktails were yummy, though. Our server asked for our appetizer and entree orders at the same time so the staff could properly pace the courses out. They did a good job with that. The apps were equally terrific. If I had to pick a favorite, it would be the foie gras pate. It had a really smooth, appetizing texture and rich flavor. However, you can't go wrong with the salmon rillettes or beef tartare either. The rillettes were filled with umami. The tartare was melt-in-your-mouth. The only dish I wasn't crazy about was the beet salad. It was good, but not great. It seemed like it was missing something. As for the entrees, the Boeuf Bourguignon and Poisson aux Truffes Noires were my favorites, followed by the Agneau au Four and Confit de Canard, in that order. The beef bourguignon here is the best I've had anywhere, that I can remember. The flounder was fresh and meaty with a wonderful creamy sauce. The lamb was nice and tender and the polenta was served as soft, savory loafs. I really enjoyed it. Both of the desserts were very tasty. Bluebird's creme brulee was solid. The creme brulee was ordered by many. It was fun to watch a chef finish them off with a torch in the kitchen. The chocolate mousse was delectably fluffy and full of chocolate flavor. Joanie was our server. She was amazing. She was super attentive, knowledgeable, and on top of her game. I could tell she was keeping an eye on our table. The Deets: In meeting up with Melissa O. and Robert O. for Sunday brunch, the decision was made to head to Bluebird in the Meadowmont Village area of Chapel Hill. We were led to our reserved table upon entering after a very positive and enthusiastic greeting at the host desk. The decor reflects French and Southern type of fusion feeling with a very nice, clean, well finished as well as bright atmosphere. There is a dedicated bar area as well as an open kitchen. We were given their main menu as well as their brunch menu to peruse when we sat. We decided on sharing the Kouign-amman (Breton Morning Bun) for starters. This sweet Breton pastry was perfect...just enough sweet to make it interesting but not covered in sugar or syrupy sweet, just right and very enjoyable. We each chose our individual meal selections for brunch then decided on a later main entree choice to share from the regular menu. I chose the Omelette aux Champignons (mushroom omelet with crispy potatoes) and I really liked it. Wonderfully light as an omelet should be and the crispy potatoes appeared to have caramelized onions in them we guessed that yielded a taste that was anything but ordinary. My dining companions enjoyed their selections of Oeufs Brouillés aux Truffes (Black Truffle Scrambled Eggs) and Pain Perdu aux Fraises et Pistaches (Brioche French Toast, Strawberries, White Chocolate, Pistachio) greatly and were very happy with their choices as well. Next, we all divided up our final shared selection of the meal - Confit de Canard au Madère (Boneless Duck Confit, Rice Pilaf, Madeira Jus). No words will suffice but amazing, the flavor profile of all the components came together perfectly and we all were very satisfied with this delicious dish. It is very apparent that this entree was well thought out, as the result was so enjoyable. I am glad we got this one to share instead of a dessert. Our service throughout the meal was on point...being helpful, pleasant, and foreseeing/providing for any need but not intrusive or overly present. Perfect. This place is such a local gem! Although I haven't been to France (yet!), I felt like I was transported to an authentic French kitchen as soon as we stepped inside! The service was absolutely stellar, and the food was incredible! I started with the mushroom soup, and it was divine! It was rich, and smooth, and velvety, and such a strong mushroom taste! My husband got the salad with the Julia Child's vinaigrette, and it was bright, and fresh and what every salad should be: crisp! I got the steak frites as my entree and my husband got the chicken dish with the mashed potatoes. We were both in heaven, and shared our dishes. They were prepared to perfection! I have been looking for creative cooking since the loss of Magnolia Grill, Pops and Crook's Corner (the great restaurants from the past). I have now dined at Bluebird twice, and it scores highly on food, service and ambiance. On this visit my wife and I shared the Salade de Laitue, simple and classic French. The bread was freshly made with high quality butter. I had the Confit de Canard. It could have been a little more crispy, but creative blend of flavors. My wife had the Sole Veronique with vin blanch sauce as good as any she has had. I will get the Sole on my next visit. For wine, we had a Pinot Blanc from Alsace. We had a wonderful first visit to Bluebird on Feb 26, 2025. The glass of wine, bread and butter, cheese plate, soups, entrees and desserts exceeded our expectations. The service was even better that the food. Everything we asked for was immediately provided and the staff checked on us on a regular basis. We arrived at 5:30 and began our meal with only a few others. Once the restaurant was filled at 7pm the noise level was higher but no overwhelming. One of our couples visited France and Paris recently and they agreed the food was as good as on their trip. While the price of this meal is higher that average for this area it is much cheaper than a trip to France. We will be back soon. read more

I love Bluebird so much - when I'm really stressed, I want the comfort food of my childhood, which for this little mademoiselle is country French. Everything about Bluebird makes me feel calm and settled, from the perfect clattering noise level to the teeny cafe tables to the loyal menu. The wait staff are friendly but never overbearing - this is slow food well savored. My only regret is trying to down a jar of pâté on my own, knowing FULL DAMN WELL I wanted that crème brûlée. Also, I've been paying more attention to restaurants' lighting designs recently and I truly love the fixtures in Bluebird. A regular in the rotation for sure. read more

Since I was visiting the Chapel Hill area, I tasked my friend with finding a great brunch spot. Bluebird was the answer, and I am so happy for that. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal here! To start, I got the hot chocolate (on impulse, because it was early morning and just felt right, okay?). It was rich and creamy, just what I wanted. I also ordered a kouign amman which must've been freshly made because it was nice and flakey. Then the bread and butter came and WOW I haven't had a bread and butter so lovely in a while. Instead of getting brunch like I intended to in the first place, I ordered duck confit. At 10am. What was I thinking?! Well, it was delicious so no regrets. The only complaint I have is that the dish was too salty and the duck was slightly too dry for my liking. I love the aesthetic of the restaurant. Open, airy, bright. Perfect for taking pictures of food! Service throughout the meal was excellent as well. Although I acknowledge the prices are on the higher end, it's definitely justified given the quality. "Quaint French restaurant in Meadowmont Village in Chapel Hill" Came here on a Saturday night at 6:45pm. We had a reservation we had gotten the day before, but the only availability was on the outdoor patio. Fortunately, it was a beautiful day, so that worked well. Walking in, the restaurant area was a bit dark, loud, and some of the tables had unusual "bench" seating, so I was kind-of happy to sit outside on the patio. The patio was interesting in that there were large black blinders for privacy (or perhaps also to protect from elements when weather is bad), but they raised the blinders for us when we were sitting there. Service was good overall. We were seated right away. I felt our attendant was knowledgeable, friendly, and very attentive to making sure we had bread and water and such. The food came out at a reasonable pace too. I ordered the duck confit and my wife had the squash crepe. Both were VERY good-- I liked the crunchiness to and flavor of the duck, and the sauce was ON POINT with a hint of apple. The brussels sprouts accompanying it were perfectly cooked and super tasty. I will add that the bread was quite good, too. My wife really enjoyed her crepe (and I liked the bite I had even though I'm not a huge squash fan). The price was appropriate for a nice bistro-- this isn't a chain restaurant. The duck was just under $30, and the crepes were a bit over $20. Overall, this was a great mix of upscale yet comfortable, and unpretentious yet high quality. I'd happily come back, especially with the opportunity to sit outside. Had we had more time I would have started with their signature French 75. Next time for sure. We started with the escargots in puff pastry. Absolutely superb. My daughter had the Salade Lyonnaise - frisée with bacon and a poached egg and gazpacho. My grandson had the Steak Frites, and I had the lamb special. My grandson thought it was the best steak he'd ever had and my daughter and I agreed that it was certainly one of the best. The lamb was served over a carrot purée with beans, zucchini and salad. Unfortunately there was no time for dessert. But I will definitely be back when I have more time. I was vacillating between the lamb and the duck, but the waiter advised that the duck was always on the menu while the lamb was not. Next time I'm sure I'll start with the French 75, the duck and a glass of whatever the waiter suggests for a wine. My lamb was accompanied by a Cote de Rhône. Marvelous! read more

We had Sunday morning brunch at Bluebird, and it was delicious! The wait staff were incredibly attentive, and the service was seamless. They did a great job of anticipating our needs without even being asked. The restaurant is beautifully decorated--brightly lit with a modern feel. Awesome oysters! Very happy with my French onion soup and salad Nicoise. Husband ate every bite of the delicious duck entree. But the flourless chocolate hazelnut tort stole the show. We only ordered one to split and next time we're ordering two!! read more
