I was excited when I first saw the sign, cuz I was like... this can't be the same Sunrise I've heard so much about in DC, is it?! And it turns out that it is, and I was ecstatic!! I feel like we generally have way more Jamaican food than Trini food around here (and even less of other islands), so it's a nice addition. If I wanted to I could walk / jog there, but otherwise it's a 5 minute drive. It's on a corner in Roosevelt Center where an Asian restaurant used to be. Even up until now, I see the Trini flags everywhere, and there are some pictures that still haven't been hung up. Sometimes they play music in there, and sometimes they don't -- I wish they'd play it all the time, because otherwise it can get oddly quiet in there. As for the food... 90% of the time I go is for their Sunday buffet. It's less than $30 for an all you can eat (AYCE) that includes plantain, chicken, fish, desserts, and some fantastic vegan dishes that are labeled as such. They have a whole vegan menu, in fact. And it's lovely to see all those on top of traditional Trinidadian options. When they first opened, they only served doubles and certain other things on weekends -- not sure if that's still the case, but they had signage to indicate that. By the way, I love their doubles. The buffet is the perfect way for me to unwind on Sundays, but I should try exploring other times, haha. I feel like a Caribbean restaurant in Old Greenbelt is a first, and I'm delighted to see the representation. Room for improvement: keep the drinks stocked during buffet, and there have been instances where no one is at the front and I've seen people waiting for a bit, sometimes impatiently. An enjoyable buffet. I took a fellow Trinidadian friend with me to see if this food was the real deal and it was signed and approved by his getting up 3 times. I had the curry and stewed chicken, salad, fresh fruit, steamed potatoes, a curry chick pea dish with potatoes, a flavorful rice, macaroni pie, and sautéed cabbage. They also had vegetarian options on the menu as a meat substitute. Also, some sweet cakes, but no traditional American breakfast food. There were a number of beverages available fruit juice and sodas. Only thing I wished for was Trini music, I saw the speaker, not sure why there was no music, but this would have been a nice touch. So nice to say that there is a wonderful AUTHENTIC Trinidadian food spot just 5 minutes from home! I met some friends for dinner there a few weeks ago and absolutely LOVED the options. I would also like to add that they make their own pressed juices, included some ginger based juices! I had the straight up Ginger one - not too spicy and not bland either. Refreshing and delicious. They also offered a mix of meat-based and vegan/veggie options. I am not vegetarian but do not eat red meat - so I was curious about the Vegan BBQ Steak. I am so glad I did! It was AMAZING! The food was delicious on Saturday in DC. I actually called back to get some more but seems like they had packed up already. I wanted to walk back but I didn't want to go by myself in the night. I just called but they're not open on Mondays. I live in DC but I will be trying more of their food. This was my first time. I'm going to advertise for them now. Waste of time- literally. If your hours of operations begin at 11am, you need to be prepared to serve your patrons at 11am. I got there at 12pm, with my mom, to be told that the pholourie, doubles AND roti "wasn't ready yet" and that they "are still mixing things"- ah okay. In trying to be accommodating, and wanting to support my people (as a Trini born and raised), we decided to place our order and walk around to kill time. At 12:45pm we got out food (and the restaurant opened at 11am), but the service of the front desk was deplorable. There were no apologies for the wait. When I asked about the Pholourie (which they did not have, despite letting me order it)- I was told I was "asking a lot of questions." And when I asked who the manager was- deflect, deflect deflect. I walked out of the establishment saying "they don't have to worry about getting my business again." I was hoping that the food would be the saving grace.... it was not. I have never in all my life had a bad Roti- until today. The chicken and curry- tasteless, and the potatoes were cut big big like dumpling. The Doubles? Something smelled off. I took one bite of each and said "nah sah." Waste of time, money and energy. My recommendations: if you want tasty Trinidadian food and a side of attitude (Caribbean Palace), if you want tasty Trinidadian food and good service at a sit down establishment, I recommend Trini Vybez or St. James in DC. Finally a place close by with good doubles! After going to Trinidad years ago and falling in love with doubles, it's been hard to find in the DMV. Everytime I asked Trini folks where to get doubles, it was always a family member and never a restaurant. In Fort Lauderdale or Brooklyn, it's not hard. They're located near the old Greenbelt movie theater! Stopped by yesterday and ordered some doubles to go. It wasn't super busy on Saturday. Service was good. It was nice chatting with JJ. The doubles were good. I ordered mine with extra pepper. I like it hot! The only thing missing was the cucumber chutney. The bara was good! Found this gem on IG, because they have weekend brunch!! It is in a location that I haven't been to, there is plenty of parking, the interior is large and bright. I think it is a neighborhood spot. So....I didn't go for brunch, but I was craving some Trini food after work. I got some curry chicken with channa and aloo, some doubles and some roti. While waiting, they brought us a taste and oh my, it was good! Everything was great, the chicken was seasoned to perfection, the peppa sauce was just right. The roti was great. I meet a few friends at Sunrise for a nice Trini dinner. I believe our visit was during the soft opening stage for the restaurant, because the restaurant did not have sign yet. I'll say that the both the owner and our hostess were super friendly and very inviting. Since the restaurant was not super busy, the owner stopped by our table and chatted with us for a bit. The owner even let us sample some things off of the menu that we did not order. *Free food is always nice.* I will say that the portions were very generous. Each entree (ranging from $14-27) comes with a choice two sides. Some sides include rice & peas, cabbage, macaroni n cheese, collard greens, lentil peas, plantains, and more. Although the other folks with whom I was dining enjoyed their entree, I was not a huge fan of my curry shrimp. I cannot describe it detail, but it had a weird after taste. It was not an aftertaste of rancid or spoiled food; it was more of weird seasoning aftertaste. Over the years, I have tried numerous curry dishes, but I've never tasted something like this before. Perhaps, this taste/seasoning/sauce is specific to this restaurant or the restaurant was having a bit of an off night. While the owner and hostess were super nice, I did not think the service was too great for a couple of reasons. About 15 minutes after ordering our dishes, our waitress returned to the table to ask us to repeat our orders because she lost her note pad. Lol. Since I was extremely hungry, I wish that she followed up with us as soon as she lost her pad. For me it was a bit odd that the food did not come out at the same time. Two of us received our entrees, and the other two had to wait about 15 minutes for the entrees. I guess this was not too big of a deal because the all the side dishes were served at the same time. We had to ask of cutlery and napkins a couple of times. Although I was not a fan of my curry shrimp, I thought the other items were pretty good. Also, I'm sure they will improve on some of the issues we had with the service as the restaurant becomes more established. We were a bit bummed that they restaurant did not carry wine or beer (as of early-mid February). However, the owner told us that it was fine if we wanted to make a quick run to the nearby store to bring our own. We have been Sunrise Caribbean customers for many years prior to the opening of the restaurant in Roosevelt Center when they setup at the various outdoor festivals around Greenbelt. We were delighted when the restaurant opened. While we do not normally eat vegan, the vegan food is amazing. The Vegan Mac and Cheese is our favorite and my wife normally doesn't eat Mac and Cheese. The Barbecue Steak (vegan) is another one of our favorites. It tastes great paired with the curried potatoes and chickpeas. The meat options are amazing as well. My wife loves the Oxtail paired with the potatoes and chickpeas along with callaloo. Caribbean food is not fast food so don't expect Mcdonalds speed. Enjoy the atmosphere and chat with the staff. Me (a Trini food lover): Wait, what?! A new Caribbean restaurant in Greenbelt??? Wife (who is Trini): We have to try it! I was excited to hear that a Trini restaurant had opened nearby. After checking out the menu online, I decided Saturday night was the perfect time to go since it's the only day they serve Doubles. When we arrived, the hostess--who didn't seem too familiar with the menu--told us we could sit anywhere. It took about 10 minutes before she came to take our order: * (1) Dhal Puri Roti with Curry Goat * (1) Dhal Puri Roti with Curry Chicken * (2) Doubles with slight pepper Unfortunately, I was disappointed with the Curry Chicken and Goat. There was way too much chana and aloo in both, and to my surprise, the chicken was boneless--I like to suck on the bone! The Doubles were just okay, similar to other places in the area, and I didn't get my slight pepper as requested. Honestly, I would have been much happier if the food was plated properly, with the roti on the side instead of being wrapped up like a Chipotle burrito. The foil packaging made it feel like the food was pre-made earlier in the day. My recommendation? Ditch the foil and serve the food like it's done back home. And most importantly, use some green seasoning to bring out that authentic Trini flavor! read more
