The flavors of the cakes and homemade juices here are astounding. I came for the Strawberry Rum Cake but they were sold out. I decided to have a taste adventure and learn what a Jamaican Black cake was. Not a bad decision! Loved it. This cake tastes like Christmas! I'm thinking it's a dark rum that they use along with delicious fruits in the cake. You can really taste the marzipan, as well. How lovely! There is nothing plain about the unassuming Butter Rum cake. It is somehow flavorful, dense and rich while still maintaining a lighter flavor. Now onto the juices. Get them. Get 6. Get 12. We tasted the Pineapple Ginger. Meow meow meow meow meow. The Cherry Guava Ginger juice is so warming - ie ginger that brings much heat - and I love it. They have authentic Jamaican dishes here and I've tried and enjoyed the Chicken Roti long ago. I'd love to come back for the seafood dishes. They have many varieties of patties with coco bread. The beef patty with coco bread is the best amount of spicy heat for me. BTW, you could smell the curry all the way from the main road. It's a carryout type of place. 5/10. FOOD: 1/10. Let me break it down. Coco Bread-7/10, Calolloo-8/10. It was very oily and greasy but tasted fine. Brown Stew Chicken with rice and beans and cabbage. Visited this place a few times this summer as an alternative to my normal Jamaican cuisine spot. I was referred to try this place and going in I did not have real expectations other than to fix a craving however I left with a feeling of gratitude. One thing I like about this place is the food seems fresh. When experiencing Jamaican food in the DMV sometimes it can be a dice roll but and when you find a good restaurant it becomes a go-to especially if they are consistent. Sometimes you can tell food isn't fresh when it is loaded with salt as a preservative or to restore flavor. Weakness For Sweetness seems to pass the freshness test. My first experience this summer I thought perhaps the food lacked the full flavor I am accustomed to however after that first visit it was clear to me that other Jamaican restaurants simply were over seasoning their dishes. Another thing to note is Weakness For Sweetness spares no open space in the to-go box. They fill the to-go boxes with food. Every time I visited this summer I was able to save some of the food for leftovers. I ordered Large both times. Actually my wife and kids were able to share two large meals. They also sell baked goods here however I probably won't purchase any more sweets from here because the cakes don't seem to have the depth of flavor and sweetness I am accustomed to. It could be a cultural thing but I expect a bit more from pound cake and lemon cake. I tried the cakes on two separate occasions to confirm. The cakes tastes good but again just a bit short of my general expectations. For me there are options at other places to meet my sweet tooth. I want to talk about the customer service but again I recognize that generally many Caribbean restaurants in the DMV aren't known for their interpersonal friendliness. At Weakness For Sweetness I've tried engaging the older lady who takes the orders and packs the food and honestly the interactions have been very dry however I know the respect and appreciation is there because she always is very deliberate and intentional when thanking me as she hands me my food and depart. My last visit this gesture was bit of a relief because her interaction with me was rather cold up until that point and I wasn't sure if I rubbed her the wrong way or if she just was having a bad day. Lawd have mercy! I am beyond glad that I finally tried this place after noting that I would for a few years now. I ordered the jerk tilapia and I think that I made the perfect choice! Now before I get into depth of this review, I want to say that this isn't your typical no frills dried up Jamaican place. They are as authentic as it gets, and they put love into the food. You can feel this by the exchange that you get when you walk inside, the rich aroma in the air, and the magical taste of the food. Now, getting into the tilapia! Upon the first bite, my eyes lit up like a Christmas tree with new bulbs!!! The jerk was nice and spicy, and the fish was absolutely cooked perfectly. Crispy on the outside, with moist white meat on the inside!!! The cabbage was nice and flavorful, and the plantains were nice and sweet with a touch of softness and crispiness at the same time! I also really appreciated the portion size, I ordered a dinner portion and there was enough food to last me two days. Deliciousness + generosity is a win in my books. The only thing keeping me from giving 5 stars, is the time management. I called my order in and they told me it'd be 15 minutes, I get there and waited 30 more minutes for a total if 45 minutes until my food was ready.. I do know that my food was made with love and care, but it'd be nice to know this instead of being told an inaccurate time. They runnin on island time baby! My favorite dish at Weakness for Sweetness is the Jerk salmon with vegetables, plantains and "Bob Marley" rice. The salmon is always fresh and prepared exquisitely. The "Bob Marley" rice is Spanish style yellow rice with seasonings and chopped vegetables. The dish just works. Their jerk is not overly spicy and very flavorful. The curried dishes are worth a try as well. I am a roti addict, and here it is cooked just the way I like it. I still have yet to try their version of Jamaica's national dish, Ackee and salt fish. In most of the dishes you can see and definitely tastes the fresh spices like thyme, allspice, and peppers. They sale extra gravy/sauce like jerk or curry. Get the extra. Also, the Bob Marley rice is a must, even if peas and rice is your go-to. Just add the other rice dish as a side order to compare. The desserts push the stars up a notch. So many fresh baked cakes, breads, pies. The coco bread is so filling and pleasantly so. The red velvet cake has to be my favorite guilty pleasure. Pro tip- make sure to stop in on Jamaican Independence day and Bob Marley's birthday. They add specials to the menu that are outstanding. Lastly, the staff and owner are downright nice. They answer your questions and will let you know if your request can be accommodated, like more rice in lieu of plantains. My new local Jamaican spot is on to something! I have been a handful of times, so I think I can give a fair judgement now. The first few times I have had their food, my parents have brought them to me. More recently I started going in person, and it's a nice quaint little place. There are a couple of tables to sit at if dining in is the desire. There is usually Caribbean music playing, but there have been a couple of times when there wasn't. My introduction to their food was their jerk chicken, their roti, and a couple random patties, which I enjoyed. While I do enjoy all of their patties, they have one type that I usually struggle to find - CALLALOO PATTIES!!! And they're among the tastiest I have had to date, though my sample size is fairly small. I had their brown stew chicken recently too, and I got it in a 'large'. They give you a LOT of food. It was three meals worth of food for me, and I must say I was delighted. They also have full callaloo entrees which spark my curiosity, as well as a big variety of desserts that I bet are delicious. The cook comes out and rudely says, what do you think? Not "we will be in 5 minutes." Not, "just wait a little while till we get everything going and the lights on". So I know better than to go to a Jamaican place trying to rush people. I phoned ahead. I was told 10 minutes. I waited (my fault) & went in. Waited in line for 10 min while they prepared the order of the guy in front of me. While the 3 people prepared/waited for his meal (cook in the back wearing her mask around her neck; that I only saw b/c of how long I waited), none of them moved to help the next person in line. After he left I told her I called in my order & she started to make it. wth? Ok, fine. She's just going to scoop up the rice/peas & throw the fish on - NOPE. She goes in the back WTH? Then I think she must've told them to get it ready, she's just going to get it. NOPE. She comes back empty handed. Ten minutes later I get my food. WTF!?!? I know they don't care & will probably never read this - but damn. My boss is a #%^@ & I get 30 minutes for lunch. WTH am I supposed to do now? From great to just decent. I used to be a big WFS fan a few years ago, and continued coming back because they made their patties fresh in house. But a good patty is not enough to sustain a 5-star rating, so down my rating goes. Honestly, outside of the patties, the food is not that amazing anymore. The jerk is underwhelming and the curry does not taste fresh. Customer service is wishy washy - sometimes the employees are pleasant, and sometimes they seem to have attitudes. The Jerk chicken was falling off the bone and through my fingers it was so tender. I usually skip the veggies after a bite or two because other places put alot on your plate. I actually wish now I had ordered the dinner to get more sautéed veggies. The rice & peas were on point as well, very flavorful. The woman behind the counter seem miserable. Even if you as a customer crack a joke you won't get any type of response let alone a smile. A few weeks ago I had the chance to visit some friends in Maryland, and this also meant the chance to try some new restaurants! Upon arrival we checked Yelp to peep the local food scene as we were all hungry from the road trip. We stumbled upon a few Jamaican restaurants and chose Weakness For Sweetness, and to say the least I am not disappointed. Jamaican food isn't that common where I am from, so it was refreshing to try something different. On the way up to the front counter, there was a cooler with fresh juices with ginger, and I wish I could have taken so many of these home with me. My boyfriend thought they were a bit heavy with the ginger, but I'm welcoming of that. For dinner I chose the curry vegetables. It came with a shredded cabbage side, rice and beans, and a few plantains. One of the shortcomings for me was that they were less than generous with the plantains, because the few that I did get were delicious. The rest of the portion sizes were gigantic, and if you reference my picture of my meal, which was a small veggie curry, it certainly wasn't small. My boyfriend got an order of the oxtail, and he was happy with his choice. We did agree that overall that the food could've been seasoned more, but it was still pretty good. With a name like Weakness For Sweetness, you're probably wondering where the sweets are. The front counter housed some beautifully made cakes and we had to grab a slice for dessert. We chose a Bavarian crème slice and a sweet potato slice that left us wishing we had seconds. I can tell that they have changed cooks. I went there the other day, and food was utterly disgusting. I received the smallest oxtails that I have ever seen. There was no meat on them. I was basically give a container of rice and peas. The long potatoes were not cooked all the way through and hard. The plaintians were hard, and not cooked properly. The food was aesthetically un-pleasing. The original people must have sold the place, or changed cooks. I use to get food from there all the time, and it was great! However, I will never go back. For a small, the meal was definitely large and filling. Jerk wingettes- these had a different taste than other jerk wings I have. It was not a bad thing, I enjoyed it. But the chicken was a tad bit, just a tad bit dry. All in all, still good Coco bread- O. M. G. DEEEELICIOUS. It was sooo warm, actually HOT and just dang good. I'm mad I only got one. I got Rasta pasta meal with shrimp. Was told it's $1 EXTRA PER SHRIMP. I get home and shrimp are one size up from a cocktail shrimp and they're ALL OVERCOOKED. Now, as I'm eating, I start to realize there's small pieces of chicken in the pasta. IM A PESCATARIAN. Never again. Flavorless, dry rice and beans and a cabbage medley were included. I work nearby 1 day a week and really look forward to those days so I can pick up my favorite meal all week- i swear it's enough food for the three people in my family. The cakes are awesome too. I've been eating here for about 5 years. The food seems to go through phases when it's better some times than others. It's REALLY good lately. The baked goods are always wonderful, and while the service isn't in your face over the top friendly, it's laid back friendly, IMO. Maybe those are perks of being a loyal customer. Pretty darn good! Now I will say this, they don't have the best jerk chicken on this side of town; to me it was a bit salty and not as juicy and tender as I would have liked. But the Roti is untouchable (a nod to the jerk and the brown stew chicken ). A small dinner here will cost you $8.95-meat and 2 sides. They also have a plentiful lunch menu and are doing wraps with their Caribbean meats. Sides such as the rice and peas along with the cabbage were fresh and had good flavor. To be honest in the past I did not remember the sides being so fresh. I hope this change is consistent and I did not just catch them on a good day. And let me add they have an extensive vegetarian menu and a few fish selections as well. The staff is pretty nice, however, as I've witnessed, if you come in with an attitude you will get it served right back. These are'nt real kissy smiley take the high road type of people. You can expect to wait about 10 minutes if you don't call your order in ahead of time. The desserts are their real specialty! A hard one to master is black cake and theirs is one of the best. It's moist and rich with bits of real current, and topped with white icing.
