Simple. Tasty. Traditional. This is a no frills donut shop that I never knew existed in my hometown! It was the second stop on a DIY donut tour of the southwest suburbs/Minneapolis. It is a cute little "mom and pop" type shop with a friendly feeling and simple but delicious donuts. These folks know what they're doing. It's a little hard to find if you aren't familiar with the area but it's well worth the search. Now, the doughnuts are all decked out and elaborate by any means. They are as simple as it gets. That probably one thing that turned me on to them. We got the raised glazed (my benchmark) the powdered cake and the raised chocolate. They were all fantastically simple. Freshness makes the difference for doughnuts in my book and it seems like Sunshine understands the importance. I bought 2 dozen assorted donuts and some apple fritters for an office breakfast meeting, and these were a huge hit! I arrived at Sunrise at 8:00 am and there was still a great selection to choose from. I tried the blueberry cake donut, glazed old fashion donut, and apple fritter, and they were all amazing. Some of my colleagues have food allergies, and the staff was very helpful in answering my questions about the ingredients in some of the donuts. Will definitely be going back! read more

Yesssss! This place is amazing! I stopped here after realizing I was in the neighborhood this past Saturday. Man, I am SO glad I did! This is not a hip, new donut shop. Nope, this is an old-school place and I wouldn't have it any other way! When I stopped in around 10am, there were just two older gentlemen sitting in a booth, enjoying some donuts and coffee. Despite the late arrival (relative to when I'm assuming this place is busy!) the case was still stocked with an awesome variety! Lots of both raised and cake donuts. As I am a cake donut fan, I opted for a cinnamon sugar, which is my hands-down favorite. To bring home to the man, I got a chocolate glazed raised donut. The price of these two donuts? $1.80. Yup. That's it. Also, the younger guy behind the counter was super friendly and helpful. I must admit my donut did not make it home. About halfway through my drive the car started to smell so good that I pulled over and ate my entire donut. It was amazing. The inside was soft and fluffy while the outside had that nice crispness that you can only get from a freshly fried cake donut. The man gobbled his donut up as well once I got home with it! If you've been under a rock, donuts are having their fifteen minutes of foodie overexposure. I'm always confused by these obsessions of the minute, bacon, cupcakes, donuts...ok.... but circumstances aligned today. Up at five. Sugar craving. What's out there? Amazing donuts, that's what. I'm a cake donut person, be advised - raised donut fans may score bigger elsewhere, but I urge you to defect and have a cruller here. I've had bits of the cruller (still hot) the cake and the old fashioned and each is pretty much the best in its category I've ever had. As in ever. Gourmet donuts try - these just ARE. I don't care about donuts plural but I do care about THESE donuts. I don't think I can overstate it enough. This is one of those food-perfect moments out of nowhere, where it just gets no better. It makes you happy - somebody somewhere is doing something perfectly, to little recognition, because they can. It's the delicacy, the lightness, the crisp outermost and the crumbling almost creamy interior, the sweet but not-cloying glaze, the ever so slightly shy of sweet donut to keep the sugar factor in balance. It's the frying at perfect temperature, the perfect medium palm-sized size of them. The crullers with their airy eggy open spaces. And the most exotic flavor in sight is maple. PROTIP: The plainer it is, the better it is here. The choco raised are decent but lack the magic - they're a good commuter donut but no more. Instead go for the old fashioned unglazed, the cake unglazed, the plain cruller, and see what I mean. I get half dozens with no frostings when I go here. You don't have to take this perfectly democratic, unhip, cop-food, mild workplace bribe, rushing to work commonplace thing and make it anything unusual to make it amazing. We showed up at five, clearly overeager. Signs of life, lights off. We knocked on the window, they let us in. If you show, someone will take care of you, in the most friendly of ways, not even treating you like an insane person, which you clearly are. Lights go on, place is totally non-descript Owner is sweet, chatty, polite, and cool. Dam good donuts! I called my parents to let them know I was stopping by and asked if they need anything. My dad urgently replied "BRING ME A DONUT!!!" Yikes. Cruising down 494 I had no idea where to go for this beautifully fried cuisine. Thankfully I asked Siri and she guided me to the delight that is Sunrise! Sunrise is a small, old school donut joint. There were some old folks there which established credibility that these were the real deal. I just can't with these fancy schmancy donuts around town that are $5 a pop. (You know who u r!) You may as well call them donOts. I'm a classic donut girl. My jams are old fashioned and cruellers. It was 11 am, so I was nervous about what my fate would be. Luckily, they had 1 chocolate old fashioned, a few cruellers, and 1 apple fritter (my dads fave). I got all 3 varieties, sped to the rents, and we tore the bag open. HOLY MOLY! I was worried they wouldn't be fresh and they were SO. The old fashioned was crusty yet light. The fritter was the best I ever bad - crusty edges, super cinnamony, with perfect chew. The crueller was light and airy-I bit into it and my teeth just sank in! These donuts rock, customer service is great, and it's local! Go get your sunrise on yo! read more

Hit this place based on good reviews from fellow Yelpers and am glad I did. I should note that while I purchased and tried 4 doughnuts, I did not actually consume all of them.... Blueberry glazed cake: 5 stars, awesome blueberry taste, light fluffy Raised glazed: 4 stars, probably would have been 5 if I'd gotten it earlier in the a.m. Cherry frosted bismarck: 5 stars, nice tart filling prevents frosting from being cloying Apple fritter: 3 stars, good fruit, but shape was flat--almost like coffee cake--just ok Okay, so I did eat most of them. I was supposed to share, but when the time came, I took larger than fair sized portions and gave stink eye to others who were to participate in the sharing to encourage less participation on their part. I don't feel good about it, but it happened. I feel better telling someone. Also, next time I go back, I'm biking there to help offset my caloric intake. Finally, I should note that I got there around 10am--early but not prime time. Will definitely swing by before 8am soon to get them a little closer to production time. Prices - very fair. Most were under $1. The parking lot is easy enough to find w/ the "Great Bear" on the sign. Sublime donuts. The blueberry cake donut is my favorite- I could eat a dozen to myself. The old fashioned glazed is equally amazing. My husband and I decided we had to get Sunrise donuts at least once a month- if not more. We live fairly close, so it's nice to walk down for a cup of hot coffee and a donut in the mornings. After reading the positive reviews here on Yelp, I had to swing by and check it out while I was in the area on a recent late Saturday morning. I tend to believe that there are a few food items that you just can't screw up, and doughnuts are one of them. After trying a few of these tasty morsels, I have still yet to disprove that belief. What surprised me was that the cake doughnuts I tried were, in fact, a step up from what I'm used to everywhere else. Something about the slightly crusty outside followed by the moist, cakey inside is just... uniquely better than the rest. I tried a maple frosted cake doughnut and a glazed blueberry cake doughnut and both were special. The glazed twist was delicious, too, but no better than the excellent twists I've had elsewhere. The guy behind the counter was very friendly, although I don't think I'll ever hang out in the store. I coulda sworn that the only two guys that were seated at a table when I came in looked at me like I didn't belong there for some reason, like "what the h*** do you think you're doin' here?" Sort of like if I walked into a trucker bar wearing a college t-shirt and cargo shorts. These are yummy donuts :). I have gotten donuts here on multiple occasions. The donut holes are decent and the yeast donuts were very chewy and still warm :). I don't think the donuts are out of this world but they're always fresh and they have good customer service. read more

My dentist and the gym my parents belong to are both within 1 mile from this completely ugly, hole-in-the-wall donut shop, and we couldn't be happier about it. I think the irony of consuming rings of deep-fried, sugar-coated dough after a thorough tooth cleaning or a strenuous workout adds to the experience. There are only two places in Minnesota that make my mom take her eyes off the road, squint deviously, and say the business' name in a long, Earth Kitt-like drawl, and Sunrise Donuts is one of them (the other place, well, that's another review...). Blueberry, Frosting, Glazed, Long Johns, Sprinkles, Cake, Kruellers, Holes: It's all good. Donuts are pretty comparable to Dunkin Donut varieties. I had eight different types of donuts they were all good as expected from any donut shops nothing amazing to talk about. If you like a safe bet in this area Sunrise Doughnuts are the one for you, if you would little bit of adventure in your donuts I recommend Denny's 5th Avenue Bakery, they have some exciting variety of doughnuts and other baked goods. read more

Just got back from a Sunday morning doughnut run. Arrived at 9:15 a. Good selection all types of doughnuts on hand. Very friendly staff, but the best part of the trip was the two doughnuts I just finished eating. Both cake doughnuts, one maple topped and the second blueberry. The doughnuts were just slightly crisp on the outside and then soft and moist as you broke the surface. The frosting on the Maple covered doughnut was shiny (a sign of freshness, no dull flat look as found on doughnuts that have sat around awhile) and just the right thickness, not too thick in my book. I want to taste the doughnut as well as the frosting. The blueberry doughnut has a thin, shiny glaze as well with the blueberries in the dough. Very fresh doughnuts!! I am originally from Braintree, Massachussetts. You need to understand this to understand my donut heritage, since that is the hometown headquarters of Dunkin' Donuts, coming soon to a state you live in. When I was growing up, each Dunkin' Donuts made their own donuts fresh every day. They were big, light, fluffy, and delicious. Then they decided to get bigger, corporate culture snuck in, the bottom line became more important, they started making their donuts centrally and shipped them to their storefronts, and the glory of the world became less than what it once was. Don't get me wrong, I'm still going to go there occasionally once they get here for nostalgia reasons, and they do make good coffee. But if I want to have a donut that reminds me of what donuts SHOULD taste like, the way they USED to taste - the place I'll take my dad to when he comes out to visit - it would have to be here. Not all hole-in-the-wall places are delicious, but it seems axiomatic that all places that are the most delicious exist as holes-in-the-wall, and this place is no exception. Finding it is a bit of a trick - drive past the plaza it is in too fast and you'll miss it - but once you have found it, you will find yourself in the Midwestern Shangri-La of Donuts. Come to think of it, I could just get a coffee at Dunkin Donuts and then come here for donuts...or, I could just do it all here. And that might be a better option. read more
