They should be inspected! I asked an employee where the ladies' room was. I was led through a storage room, down the stairs to the basement... ok fine, that's not the issue. In the bathroom is the obligatory "Employees must wash hands" sign - but here's the kicker- there is no soap in the bathroom! Wrap your heads around that- the employees who are kneading your bread, handling your produce etc have no access to soap in the bathroom. Please management, fix this! read more

During a recent I was walked through the store back through the garbage areas down short stairs and to the only restroom in this facility. It is too disgusting for employees or customers!!! Expensive but always good in a pinch. They serve a lot prepared food items for a ready made dinner. I tried there fried chicken but was disappointed too dried out. It should have been pulled. The salad bar is great and a lot of healthy items. The liquor selection is great for a to go bottle of wine. Very nice selection. Exceptional flower selection! read more

This is a very convenient grocery store, but convenient also means prices are high for various items. At times, the organic section isn't that fresh and over priced (compared to Whole Foods) but I have found that other items are decently priced here. The sandwiches here are decent and you can get a sandwich card to get a free sandwich after 9 purchases - Awesome. Overall, a quick and easy place to go when you forget to buy something. read more

The GRAND It's one of the nicest helpful knowledgeable grocery stores on the northshore I live in highland park and I rarely venture out of my easy access zone but since this pandemic I've gone to different places on and around the northshore I must say the GRAND has gotten lots of hooooorays from me especially in their produce Dept Oh my goodness MISTER Jose helps me get the freshest artichokes they are huge fresh deeeelish and the price is fantastic His staff is also quite knowledgeable informative and soo very helpful about their produce department They have an amazing selection of exotic fruits that I don't see at other northshore grocery stores Actually whenever I ask any of the people working at THE GRAND a question in all depts I get an answer or they search the store to see if they can find the item I never get oh sorry I don't know .... A real shame. Ever since Sunset bought The Grand. It's been all downhill. You have to check the expiration date on everything. And I mean everything. Today I was there. Reached in for milk. And several of the milk containers all had early October expiration dates. And this happens a lot with all sorts of products. And oftentimes the fruit and produce. When you get it home. You notice that it is spoiled. The staff remains wonderful. But at these prices, and with these expired expiration dates, we are now shopping predominantly at Whole Foods. Have not encountered any expired product problems and the prices are similar to The Grand. And the store is a heck of a lot nicer with a lot more interesting products. read more

Really fresh produce and very nice unique items. Nice selection of ready to go salads and side dishes. It is little on the expensive side but the sales do help. Service is extra ordinary. For example, when I finally arrived at the cash register with my cart I was attacked by people trying to help me unload my cart. It was extremely nice and if I had a child it would be very helpful but I was alone and I felt little strange having so many people assist me all at once. read more

While my family of 5 consumes a lot of groceries each week, I don't shop in person very often...thank you instacart! When I do shop in person (usually with a few kids in tow) I tend to go to Sunset or Marianos based on selection and price. However, if I need just a few things having The Grand nearby in both Glencoe and Winnetka has been quite convenient. It took me 3.5 years of living in Glencoe to discover the best thing about The Grand...Chef Phil! When I invited way too many kindergarteners over to my house for a back to school BBQ I called The Grand to see if they could help with the cooking. They = he (Chef Phil!). Within a few minutes Phil and I figured out a simple menu to please both the parents and their families and he was going to grill it all himself. The labor itself cost only $120 for 4 hours - I guarantee you won't find a better value in the North Shore. Chef Phil went above and beyond his time at the grill (which he brought) whipping up cheese quesadillas, hot dogs and hamburgers. The BBQ ended up being a bit of a potluck and he set it all up, rummaged thru my kitchen to find serving pieces (most of which I didn't even know I had) and made sure all the guests were happy & well fed. The question I kept getting all night long was where the amazing chef came from. The Grand! Before Chef Phil headed home I told him I won't be having anymore dinner parties without him. You know in Home Alone, when Macaulay Culkin goes to the store to buy supplies? Well, this is THE store. Fun movie history fact aside, I am absolutely obsessed with their prepared foods/deli section. My mayo-lovin' heart is currently trying to sample as many of their prepared deli "salads" as possible. The potato salad is awesome. Not only is there a ton of mayo, but there are also sliced eggs mixed in. (I may also be a little obsessed with eggs - maybe not as intense as portrayed in John Waters' Pink Flamingos - but I love them!) The crab salad is fantastic too, because what could make me happier than the combination of imitation crab stick and mayo? Not much, I tell you. Up next to try? Ham salad! I should just move in to the deli. And for those mayo-haters (boo! hiss!), there is the tangy and healthier pasta primavera salad - look! no mayo! and veggies! If I lived in Winnetka, I'd probably shop here once in a while. The selection isn't as big as where I usually shop (Whole Foods and Trader Joe's) and the prices are a smidge high. we have been going to The Grand for years as our backup grocery store and will continue to do so because of the convenience. And that is really the only reason. unlike a lot of the negative reviews, I really dont have a problem with the staff - its a grocery store not a restaurant. I have a lot of problems with this place though. pros: convenience, the bakery, the guacamole and pico de gallo cons: 1. quality control - they do a really bad job taking meat and produce off the shelf when it is starting to go bad. I have rarely gotten a bad steak from another grocery store, but the miss rate here is about 50%. I have actually taken steaks back after I have unwrapped and smelled them and have been given grief about it a few times. totally unacceptable. stay away from the meat. 2. cost of basic groceries - this place is big enough in terms of inventory turnover to not have to gauge customers on basic grocery items (eg, cereal), but they do. "if you gauge them, they will still come...." 3. cost of convenience meals - biggest ripoff ever. $6 for a package of chicken tenders? $10 for a package of premade pigs in blanket? read more

Grand Food Center appears to be basically like a whole foods or a sunset foods. I really can't tell the difference. That's good and bad. The plus: you don't have to go to WF (north or south, in evanston) and deal with the parking issues. The minus: it's basically the same stuff, almost entirely. You're not going to find something here that you haven't seen anywhere else. For those who said it's pricey, I think you fail to realize that they are basically a whole foods and not a jewel - along with appropriate organic options. Considering that, I'd put this squarely in the realm of "whole foods competition". If you know what you look for when you shop WF, you would be able to find it here as well. read more

Larger than the Glencoe location, with a little more to choose from. Very sweet and helpful staff which you will find in both locations. Yes, prices are higher than Jewel. But come on people, its the North shore, and its a small family owned grocery store with lots of variety, gourmet items and organic selections This location also has a very nice floral department. read more

This is my go-to grocery store! I hardly ever wait in line at check-out or the deli as the management is obviously very efficient when it comes to staffing and forecasting the needs of the business. Great quality foods & a decent organic section...yes, you will pay more, but it is worth it for the health benefits alone. I have never had anything less than friendly service here in my 10+ years of being a customer. Bonus: my niece and nephew love the balloons here, they have unique Winnetka-themed gift items, and the floral department always has a great selection. read more

This is a fabulous grocery store. The staff is so friendly, the selection is good, and the prepared foods (deli, bakery, salads) are very tasty. The only reason I am not giving them five stars is because Grand tends to be a little pricier than other stores, like Trader Joe's. But the quality of food is great and the baked goods are especially delicious if you're looking for a treat. When I was shopping there most recently, I selected three containers of various salads from behind the deli case, totaling to about $25. I remember putting them on the conveyor belt to check out, and didn't think anything else of it. It was only the next day when I went to grab the chicken salad for lunch that I realized all three containers had never made it into my fridge (my husband had unloaded the groceries for me, otherwise I would have noticed right away). Additionally, he had taken out the recycling (with the receipt in it), so I had no proof that I had paid for those containers. I called Grand and explained the situation, and they told me to come back at my convenience and they would provide those salads for me again, free of charge. I was really appreciative that they trusted me and my story, and really enjoyed those salads when I finally got them the following day. So all in all, I recommend Grand for a positive and convenient grocery shopping experience. read more

This is not by accident: acknowledging that it can't compete with the big-box stores on price, The Grand has instead smartly--and effectively--set its sights on providing the highest level of customer service possible. Its staff is both diverse and knowledgeable, and its senior management leads by example. It's not uncommon for an owner or manager to help empty your cart, or assist with bagging your groceries. (Do you even know who owns Cosco, Whole Foods, or Marianno's?) What's more, The Grand's selection of meat, produce, as well as its bakery and floral items, are all top-notch. Let's face it: good service and good selection makes weekly grocery shopping at The Grand a more of an enjoyable experience...and less of a chore. read more

Luckily we were passing through the area and we had a Groupon for this place. Everything was very nicely organized and very nicely presented. The place was immaculate and very well maintained. The prices were what we expected for the area. The service was rather indifferent toward us. Everyone we interacted with did not seem very friendly at all. Overpriced. Hit or miss with some deli items. However, the item that keeps me coming back here is the grilled chicken salad. Tender cubes of grilled chicken, sliced almonds, grapes, and a light vinegar dressing coating. It's soooo good. The salad bar is also pretty decent. One time, I went in to get a salad. Overall, it is a beautiful store, it's nicely organized, and it has really great produce. In terms of the staff, I've had wonderful experiences with them being as helpful and friendly as they could be. However, the prices here are ridiculous. In addition, whomever is choosing the brands is an idiot. It seems as if they prefer to have a range of comparable mid-brands that are, in most cases, the same exact price, rather than having a selection ranging from low- to high-grades in terms of quality and price, to give the shopper more options. I guess since it is in a pricier area, they might think they're appealing only to those who can afford it, but at that point it seems that they're not really looking out for the customer, but looking out for their own wallets. With that said, it is a great place if you're only buying one or two things. But any more than that and you'd better enjoy wasting your money on unnecessarily marked-up items. read more

Yes, their prices are a little higher than Mariano's on some items, but the overall customer experience is so much more pleasant that it makes grocery shopping actually tolerable, dare I say even enjoyable! I used to dread grocery shopping with my two toddlers, but coming to the Grand is a highlight of our week. My kids love pushing the tiny carts and getting free balloons. The employees are so friendly and helpful, and they seem to genuinely enjoy having children in the store. The store is small, but they carry lots of unique items that you can't find at Mariano's. The Winnnetka location is larger and nicer than its sister location in Glencoe. The stores have been upgraded a little bit over the last few years, but are largely the same as they have been for ages. That said, these stores have done very well over the years because they effectively have a lock (aside from Lakeside Foods in Winnetka, which is much smaller) on the grocery business for Glencoe and Winnetka. Prices have gotten a LITTLE better in some regards, but otherwise these stores are largely expensive or very expensive for what they offer. Service is generally good, although DeeJays/Grand Food have not really emphasized service to the degree that local chain Sunset has. Selection - like the stores themselves - has improved moderately, although it's largely Jewel-like. Salad bar is okay at best. I don't think these stores are going anywhere, but whereas 20-30 years ago DeeJays was largely the only game in town without a pretty decent drive, there are an increasing amount of competitors getting closer, including a former Dominicks that is now a Marianos and another new Marianos coming not far away. People in Glencoe and Winnetka will always appreciate these stores as a "need a carton of milk"-type of store without having to drive. However, I've seen a lot of people who appear to do all of their shopping here and it's never less than remarkable looking at how much they're paying for what little they're getting. With an increasing amount of other groceries a shorter drive away, I have to wonder if there's going to be less in the way of people doing all of their shopping here. I've seen some people spend hundreds at Grand/Dee Jays, whereas the same money could have gone far further somewhere else - and it's not as if that "somewhere else" is that far away - it's maybe a 5 minute drive. Again, I don't have anything against these stores, but I think they were very comfortable for many years and have only seemed to recently make some mild moves to remain competitive. read more

There's a reason the Winnetka and Glencoe stores have been in business for more than 25 years, especially when the market is filled with big boys like Dominicks, Sunset, Whole Foods and Mariano's. You want to shop at a place where "everybody knows your name?" Well, this is the place. Their prepared foods are among the best and the meat department usually has about 6 types of beef tenderloin and chicken marinating in various sauces. They also have killer special tasting events once a quarter and I don't know who does their event planning, but they make it really fun with pro and college sports team mascots (I bumped into Willie the Wildcat there last week and Staley the Chicago Bears mascot last January). They support so many local community charities if would make your head spin...just asked the folks at the New Trier Food Pantry, Hadley School for the Blind and Glencoe Family Services. I know for a fact that the owners worked as baggers at the store when they were in high school and I'm always bumping into one of them whenever I go there. Heck, one of the owners is usually bagging groceries in the Glencoe store. People who live in Glencoe-Kenilworth-Winnetka swear by this place and they aren't always the easiest people to please. read more

I was just refused service by Rick (the "customer service" representative) and Ken (the manger). They would not sell me a six pack of beer because the do not take out-of-state IDs. I'm 38. I live in New York, but I grew up in Winnetka. Not only is this absurd, but arguably illegal. I couldn't help wonder if I was refused service because I'm gay, and I went in to buy this beer and other groceries with my husband. This is the best grocery store I've ever been to. The service is unequaled. They always ask to help, and never say no to any request they can fill. The people who work there are pleasant and polite. It's a great size so it's efficient to shop there, and I seem to find everything I need. I used to think it was somewhat more expensive, but in comparison to Mariano's it's equivalent or better. They have excellent quality and wide range of choices, especially in the wine, cheese, produce, and dairy sections. We are so glad they are in our neighborhood! read more
