Brandon the manager (when I was finally put through to him), and the driver who brought the load to our house, were both great to talk to and deal with...but the CSR who answers the phone was one of the most obstreperous and contentious human beings I have had the misfortune to encounter in a long time. Instead of trying to find a solution for a miscue this morning, I got a series of "not gonna happen" and "that's not my problem" replies. That is when I got put through to Brandon as the CSR was obviously not interested in working towards any resolution. This CSR working the phones has the potential to drive a lot of business elsewhere and I would recommend that Sunset either train them up, or train them out the door...but something needs to change before the door becomes locked for good due to no more business. read more

Sunset materials is a shady business that change their pricing without informing you. When I asked the driver if I could add another lid to my order he stated no problem, they would take care of it. Was not informed of a price difference for a separate order. When I called to state they charged me more and asked for a refund for the difference, she stated it was more since it was a separate order from the first one. Same day, same address, more money for low quality fill. I was told the fill dirt would have some rocks and sticks, it had boulders, logs, and garbage in it. When I asked with all this considered if they would consider a partial refund, did not even receive a reply over the phone. I'll be taking my material business and anyone who inquires elsewhere. read more

Thinks you should read his mind to how to get loaded up, Gives no direction but gets mad when you don't back up the way he wants. Nobody told me that I would need a raised truck to deal with huge holes and very deep heavy equipment tracks left in dirt. - about 1 foot. The place is super packed and tight cornered. Hard to turn around with a dump trailer. No signs to point you where to go. Then if you are a wrong turn their guy driving a bulldozer being disrespectful and yelling nonsense at you. Will never go to that place again. read more

After many trips to Lowes and HD for som bags of gravel, I gave up. Emailed Sunset if they sell bags of gravel...they don't, but you can bring up to 5 5gal buckets to fill up. Much cheaper than buying bags from Lowes and HD! I only needed 3 buckets of crushed and pea gravel. Girl working there was very nice and gave me instructions. I shoveled gravel and was out in no time. Great that I live near too. I'll be back for more gravel soon! read more

Had such a good experience a month ago that we decided to try them again, this time for the hogfuel to keep the weeds down. Went out to the yard and they were very helpful in showing our options, costs, etc. Once again Brian did an amazing job backing down our long, steep driveway, missing our neighbors tree branches that hang over. I ordered bark from Sunset and the folks on the phone are very helpful and friendly. When the driver delivered the bark, he accidentally hit my gutter and caused some damage. The driver immediately let his boss know and I was contacted by their accounts payable/claims department. They made it really easy for me to contact my gutter repair company and I didn't even see a bill. The gutter company gave me a bid, Sunset approved and paid it. I can't say enough about how well this company addresses an error. The best customer service companies respond well to errors and Sunset lived up to that. read more

Ordered 6 tons of cobble stone last weeks. It was the worst quality of cobble stone I have received. Suppose to be 3"-12" in size but when arrive a lot of it are greater than 12" and they are not smooth edge stone... many are large crushed rock with shape edges (not very decorative). Those shape edges stone are more like those people used for rockery wall. Due to poor quality, I feel it's a bit over price. I will definitely take my business else where on my next project. read more

I've been going to Sunset Materials for various home yard projects over the course of the last year and they've been great. They answered my extensive and somewhat naïve questions over the phone. They helped me with my final decisions when I arrived. I have a small vehicle so on days and weeks when I've made multiple trips they have been quite friendly. Now that they have a small haul truck I'll probably save a little wear and tear on my car and let them deliver my 3 tons of rock instead of multiple trips. read more

This place is a rip, the woman working at the counter is rude but will gladly take your money. When it comes to dump fees, they overcharge you for what is actually in your vehicle. Also, what they tell you over the phone is generally lower than what it actually is once you show up. Take your business elsewhere read more

The rate they quote over the phone is not the actual rate for beauty bark because they tack a fuel fee and an environmental fee on top. Other beauty bark places don't do this. They ended up being almost twice as much per yard as Carpintos when you tack on the fees. The fuel fee is a fee for them to load the beauty bark into your truck. read more

Wow! I'm so glad I reached out to Sunset Materials. I requested a quote via email on a Friday at 8:55am and received a response from Jorden in one hour. They were running a March special on dark mulch, and they were the most competitively priced in the 98074 zip code with delivery/tax. I called Holly in dispatch by 1pm that day, and was scheduled for next day delivery within a window from 9-11am. I overstated my order by a lot (by 12 yrds), and quickly called first thing Saturday morning to reduce it. It wasn't Holly at dispatch, but someone else, and they were extremely helpful and said "no problem, we'll adjust it" without hassle or increasing the pricing which I fully anticipated and still would've accepted. And sure enough, they were at our door by 9:30am with the delivery of the corrected quantity. Quick response, great product at a great price, delivery at the beginning of a relatively short window...service doesn't get better than this! I was a little hesitant based on some old reviews, but I believe the company is under new management. Give Sunset a try! I hope your experience was a fantastic as mine. I can't speak on the quality of product because I will not buy from Sunset. Do yourself a favor. If you want 5/8 minus rock call Stoneway. $20 a ton plus $140 delivery fee, under $500 to your house for a full 10 yard truck. Considerably less than Sunset at around $671. If you want a true comparison, $35 a ton vs. $20 at Stoneway......UHaul. I've also dumped yard waste here before and the prices are steep, try Cedar Grove. I wish their prices were better since it is a convenient location. read more

These guys always treat me right. Great selection of gravel, mulch, bark, and rockery rock. Their Topsoil is the best around. The "other guys" topsoil was full of plastic, rocks, and concrete, so I was happy to find Sunset's was way better quality for my planting.
