The worst store I've ever been to!!! The place doesn't even look like a music store, when you walk in all you see is a mess; a giant pig pen!!! Also this store charges a lot more than you expect. I bought a few piano exam books once there and they charged me almost $60.On amazon I could save about $40. I suggest you go on amazon and not go to that store. Another reason I think this store sucks is because they don't even give you a proper receipt. Their receipt didn't even have the books' names or the store's name on it. Plus their costumer service is terrible, they didn't even tell me the book wasn't refundable when I was buying it, even the receipt didn't have a word about it. I really wanted to buy stuff from the local store and support it, but I think I'm done with that place. You won't be seeing me there ever again. read more

I always make it a point to visit neighborhood music shops because you just never know what you might find. This is not a big store, but they certainly make use of every bit of space they can. Since I'm a rock musician, they didn't have a good selection of what I would buy on the spur of the moment. But this is what they do have. A good amount of sheet music, and acoustic guitars and cases. Guitar strings and standard guitar straps. Also trinkets and some jewelry type accessories like pins, clocks and pendants all with music themes. This is what I was talking about earlier. They got some unique stuff. I saw a Hofner Bass Pin, (Paul McCartney's Bass) a beautiful trinket for only $20. Now that's COOL! The staff is friendly, and the owner Evelyn, is very nice, and put lots of effort to show me what I told her I was interested in seeing. There are items I certainly would return to purchase as gifts. AND, for those rockers that might need stuff in a hurry, they do have instrument cords and electronic tuners as well. They also offer guitar lessons. I saw a couple of kids walk in with their "axes" ready to become the next Angus Youngs and Eddie Van Halens. I certainly hope so, because it seems that the decent guitar shredders have skipped a generation. What did I get? Well I found some large heavy gauge bass guitar picks, so I got 10 of 'em for $3, that Guitar Center would've charged me over $5 for... And these were Gibsons! Hey, this is a really cool music shop. Evelyn is a doll and so helpful and patient with her customers. I took classical guitar lessons there from Laurence Paul before a finger injury laid me off the instrument. There are a couple of back room music rooms (one very small one, barely fits 2 persons in there). If she doesn't have the music sheet, she'll order it for you. They have all sorts of stuff. I got my metronome from them and it's the best. I periodically stop by just to say "hi" to Evelyn even 'tho I'm no longer taking lessons there. Her mom helps out in the store and she's the sweetest thing. They bring out seasonal music books/sheets (Halloween, Xmas) which are so much fun to look thru. read more

Great place to look for pretty much any type of music books. This place is tiny, but it is really stocked full of all the songs I've ever looked for. I believe they also offer piano/guitar lessons and such, I've never taken it here but remember seeing the signs. read more

Small shop, but still has a reasonable selection of stuff. I went to Sunset Music for some strings and the folks were extremely friendly and helpful. I actually ended up with the wrong type of strings and had to return them. Even though I had already opened the package, they took the strings back no questions asked and let me pick out another set. This is an example of what local business offers that a larger franchise could never provide. Evelyn, the owner, knows every product off the top of her head and is willing and helpful at all times. Being at the store is just an all around pleasant and homey experience, what a music store should be! On my first attempt to tune a guitar, I broke one string and decently tuned the last 5. I yelped music stores, trying to find a replacement string, and found Sunset Music Company. Although I came for only one string to be replaced, I didn't specify and only asked how much it would be for guitar strings and to have them string it for me. After examining my guitar, they told me my strings were still new enough and I only really needed the one. (Thanks, because that saved me from asking for only one string!) They didn't try to sell me on getting a new set even though they had to estimate the size of the string I needed, and helped me string it and double-checked to make sure my guitar was tuned. Very helpful and friendly service. Got a few guitar picks for very cheap. Seems a bit limited in the size of the shop but you could say the same for just about all the independent shops of this sort in The City. I would like to come back and maybe get a guitar tuned. I used to get my music books here when I took piano lessons. They have an extensive selection of all types of genres. It's more like a narrow hallway of music. Actually, now that I think about it, it's kind of amazing how they fit all these music books and sheets in this tiny place. The past few times I've gone were for pop music sheets, radio hits and the like, for 3.95 per song. I'm sure the staff is nice, but once or twice I've gone in and nobody's looked up. Though, maybe they think they don't need to, as the bell on the door does its job beautifully. read more

Today I took my beat up old acoustic in to get new tuning pegs. Little did I know that it wouldn't be as easy as screwing them in. There are certain tricks I needed to know, and Evelyn told me all about how you can break a toothpick off into the hole if a screw wont catch, etc. etc. She fixed it up and put new strings on. I don't even think she charged for labor. It was great! I'm definitely going here for all my music needs in the future. read more

Yes, there really is magic! Somehow, Evelyn manages to stock just about everything in this little space. When she doesn't have an item, she can order it, and you'll get it quickly. I ordered an obscure piano score earlier this summer that was "being reprinted" by the publisher, and just to stay on the safe side, and because I wanted it soon, I also ordered it from some online sources. Well, after 8 weeks there's still no sign of it from the other sources, but Evelyn had it waiting for me in about 10 days. Does she have a secret cache somewhere, or . . . ? well my wife & i purchased a clarinet for our son here for his music lessons during his 4th & 5th grade year of school. the price was very reasonable & they offered a payment plan. they included all the major necessitates to get him started such as a few reeds, cork grease, a case, etc... we have brought the clarinet back the following year to have it serviced & the turn around time was fairly quick & the repair cost were reasonable. they offer a large amount of music books required by the san francisco school district so finding what you are needing for your child's school needs are not a major problem here. all the instruments are teacher certified, so you will not be buying or renting wrong. the instruments that they carry are good quality for the beginning student which will last them for many years, the instruments there are not the cheap poor quality made in china instruments that require frequent & constant servicing which some music stores will try to sell you. the staff here is very knowledgeable, friendly & wiling to listen to your needs. they have a large variety of quality supplies that any aspiring musician will need or want. the do accept credit cards. they are closed on sundays & mondays. street parking is pretty difficult around this area during the day so i would recommend parking a few blocks away & walking. read more

Sunset Music is the best!!! Evelyn, the owner, is amazing. She's a pianist, organist, and violinist who has encyclopedic knowledge of ALL kinds of music, and her store carries everything imaginable, from cat-shaped metronomes with moving eyeballs, Beatles anthologies, to urtext editions of Bach's complete works. If she doesn't have it, she'll find it and get it for you. If you want sheet music for a piece you've heard but don't know the title, just go in, hum a few bars, and voila, she'll hand it to you. this truly is as good as it gets. they have the widest selection of printed music filed in bins, drawers, and shelves that i've seen in the city. i can easily kill an hour just browsing through their stuff. as a professional pianist, i'm constantly looking for solo music by more obscure composers- besides bach, beethoven, mozart, liszt, etc., they have collected works of busoni, granados, amy beach (who???), chamonide, and more. editions are mostly dover, but i saw signs for henle + kalmus in back. if it's not on the shelves, ask for it b/c there's lots more music squirreled away in other corners. there are at least 15 different instructional books on how to improv jazz piano. they have the big piano method series: alfred, bastien, etc. i'm also big into musicals, and they have the typical phantom/les mis/saigon/mama mia/wicked, but i also picked up a copy of paul simon's "working", and put more coins in my meter so i could look thru "seussical", "the light in the piazza", "last five years", and "workin'" (billy joel's musical). they also seem to have a big selection of popular sheet music (pussycat dolls, rihanna, beyonce, etc.) for anyone who's looking for this kind of stuff. staff is laid back; they let you look around as long as you want. it's a crowded space, but it's so satisfying to actually be able to find what you're looking for. read more

I needed to rent a trumpet for my sons trumpet lessons. I had no idea where to go and found this place on yelp. I called and they were very helpful on the phone. When I went in person I was helped right away, got the trumpet along with instructions and I was on my way in about five minutes. They also offer private lessons.
