I came in hoping to switch from glasses to multifocal contacts for more flexibility in daily life. I was fitted with Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day Multifocals, but unfortunately, the lenses haven't worked well for me. Indoors or in low lighting, my vision is sharp and comfortable. But the moment I step outside into bright daylight, everything goes noticeably blurry -- to the point where I question whether wearing them is even worth it. After doing some research and testing things on my own, I suspect the issue has to do with how my pupils respond to light. In bright conditions, they constrict, and that seems to interfere with how the multifocal zones line up. It's frustrating that this wasn't explained or factored into the fitting process. To make things worse, my mild astigmatism wasn't accounted for. Between that and the blurry daytime vision, these lenses just don't deliver what I was hoping for. I already purchased a three-month supply, so now I'm stuck trying to manage until I can reorder. The doctor repeatedly said, "Multifocals are a compromise," which in hindsight felt like code for "we don't really expect these to work well in all situations." I wish that trade-off had been made clearer upfront. The office itself was professional and clean, and the staff were courteous -- but the fitting didn't feel personalized, and that really matters when it comes to something as sensitive and specific as vision. I'd recommend asking a lot of questions and making sure your unique needs are being considered before committing to a full supply. read more

Dr. Canlas is a wonderful doctor, she truly is. She's professional does a thorough exam, doesn't try to upsell you and is honest. This is for her staff. I realize that I have a very high prescription and that my glasses are hard to make, I get that. I also realize that the holidays make it harder to get things done, but since I had such a high opinion of this place, I expected updates or hey we're sorry for the delay, but I had to wait more than a month for my glasses which I paid well over a thousand for. When I inquired about the delay I was told that due to end of the year, everyone waited to order glasses and use their insurance. Ok, how is this my problem? In addition, saying that, tells me that I am not a priority or a respected customer. My eyes were hurting and I suffered migraines from having to wait for glasses which I ordered well before Christmas. I've been coming to this location since I was 8 years old and only had one other problem but that was because my prescriptionis too high, not due to staff. I will no longer be a patient here and will take my business elsewhere since they dont care about prioritizing their customers with their uncaring attitude. I've been to Sunset Optometric Center for two annual eye exams now. I had switched over from another optometry office simply because it was further away and there are plenty of optometric care providers in LA that you shouldn't necessarily have to travel all that far. For me, I feel like eye care is something I'm less in tune with. It's different from seeing your primary care physician, or even a dentist. For me and many others, it often feels like a means to an end to get your yearly supply of contacts, and I was always unsatisfied with that type of experience. Your eyes need just as much care as other parts of your body and you should take ownership over seeking out optometric care that educates you about your eye health and how your eyes are progressing. After having contacts for 20 years, I felt like I should know more than I did! So I was looking for that education and care in Sunset Optometric Center when I think the default for many is to just get your yearly eye exam, get your contacts, and not think about it for another year. During my most recent appointment, I needed some emergency contacts for a trip to Germany the day before my flight. I ended up just using that opportunity to have my yearly eye exam with Dr. Canlas. During this appointment, I finally felt like everything clicked with my eye care. Dr. Canlas, I feel, is totally on my speed. She didn't spare any explanations for what was going on with my eye health, what I could expect in the future, and maybe what I should start thinking about doing in regards to new contacts, lasik, etc. Because she was so open about educating me about my eyes, I felt more comfortable to ask her all the questions I had on my mind. I think that is the #1 most important thing any healthcare provider can foster in their office - that patients feel comfortable asking all of their (sometimes uneducated!) questions. I left my visit feeling much more knowledgeable about my eye health. I also felt more comfortable switching to daily contacts, which optometrists have been trying to get me to do for ages. I skipped my eye exam last year because of COVID but returned this year. Still love coming here for my eye concerns- the doctor is very knowledgeable and explains the process of each exam. Staff is attentive and helps maintain cleanliness and social distancing. The parking lot is in the back, and always available during my appointments. You have to call them when you arrive and answer COVID screening questions; this takes but a few minutes. After answering the questions, you're escorted inside. read more

This office is lovely. They have excellent covid protocol - clearly sanitizing everything, explaining procedure for each step of the patient intake process to keep you safe and moving through efficiently. Everyone is friendly, patient, and fun to talk to. Dr. Canlas took time to answer every single one of my questions (even the repeat questions so I didn't forget!) and never seemed like she was rushing to get me out of there or annoyed like doctors can often be. She seemed to delight in explaining her answers to questions I had about how eyes functioned - I liked her as both a person and a medical provider! While I was still in the office, I sent my boyfriend a text urging him to make an appointment too. I'm fully convinced there's not a better optometrist in town. I only wish they had the frames in their office priced a clearly - I was on a tight budget and was just going off of brand names. Came here a few weeks ago to pick out a new pair of frames. I figured I'd be in and out like the times I've been in my previous optometrist. .. I see now the difference between going,'choosing, and paying, to getting a full on experience of choosing frames. I didn't even think it could be quite like that.. So I went in to meet with one of the associates named Mayra. When I got there she was finishing up her lunch, but was happy to cut it a little short and come and assist me. As we walked around the room, I chose about fifteen pairs of frames that were all so beautiful!! I went in for one pair and ended up buying two. Love their variety! It was so hard to narrow down. So happy to have come here, nice decor, many, many frames, but most of all lots of happy faces. I'll definitely be back! One more thing that was awesome was that my lens came a week early!! Yay!! I was a new patient and it was super convenient to make an appointment and get in and out quickly. I was able to make an appointment for the same week at a time convenient for me. The person I spoke to on the phone told me about their specials (I appreciate them wanting to help me save a little money, since I don't currently have vision insurance!) They are running a special on Yelp so take advantage of it! They have free parking off of Sunset in the back of the store, which is awesome. It's only about a 15 minute walk from my house and right on some bus lines. When I arrived I filled out some new patient paperwork and they cleaned my glasses for me. After 10-15 I did some preliminary eye tests, which took another 20 or so minutes. They recommend taking a photo of your eye, instead of dilating your eye. It costs an extra $35, but eye health is important! Then I saw the doctor, who was so patient and gentle. She explained all the tests she was doing and all the ways they check eye health. That part was short and sweet too, but she asked if I had questions and it wasn't rushed. The store is very clean and tidy and has kind of a steampunk aesthetic. I just got a glasses prescription this time and bought glasses elsewhere, but they have tons of nice glasses and sunglasses for $200-500 (that price point is steep for me, even with insurance). In the waiting area they have toys for kids and magazines and a gender-neutral one person restroom. I spent less than an hour total and without insurance a comprehensive eye exam with a glasses prescription and eye photo was around $100 (I did the $75 for $125 deal). I'll definitely be back for a contacts appointment, as it was everything I could want from an optometrist, for actually a lot less than a lot of other places I contacted. Thanks everyone! read more

I love this place! I almost purchased frames at a boutique shop, (and take a small refund from my insurance), until I found Sunset. They have all the coolest frames, they are a full service optometry shop, and they TAKE INSURANCE!!! Steven took all the time I needed. He made sure I understood all costs, in addition to helping me until I was 100% happy with my choice of frames. They also offer custom clip-on sun glasses, at a much better price than I found elsewhere. Sunset was also able to order in frames I found in another store, that did not accept insurance. Everyone is so nice and they go the extra mile to be on point with the trends. They also have lots of retro looking choices. I will be coming here from now on! read more

I had been going to this place for like 10 yrs and I was so disappointed with my last visit. I have a severe dry eye condition, Dr Garza ordered some punctal plugs. Fast forward to two months later and no call from the office regarding my treatment. I called and was told that they will check with Dr. Garza, again no return call. I called again and Robin, who checked my insurance for coverage for the punctal plugs and was 100% aware of the treatment; stated that she did not know what had happened with the plugs. At first she stated Dr. Garza was out of the office on sabbatical until February 2nd. Sensing that I was upset, she promised to call me back with an status update. She calls back and asked if I could come in the very next day to get the plugs in. WTF? They had the plugs in stocked and weren't calling me? Whatever happened to Dr. Garza is on sabbatical until February 2nd, and all of the sudden he is available? How does he go on sabbatical and still have patients waiting for treatment? I am beyond upset that Dr. Garza does not respect his patient that trusted him with her eyes for many, many years. I will report him to my insurance so they can refund my ONE annual vision allowance, wasted at this place. Time for a new doctor. One more thing - what's up with the staff? I struggled with this place. I wanted to like it. Its conveniently located close to my house, they seem to have a good selection of things, Dr. Garza is REALLY nice. But what killed it for me is their staff. 1st Strike: They called to tell me my glasses were ready on a Saturday morning, I showed up at 3:30 to pick up, the door was locked. I looked in the window and saw someone, waved to them they looked at me and quickly turned around. This was 30 minutes prior to their advertised closing time... if it was :10 minutes, I get it... We all want to go home early sometimes, especially on a Saturday... 2nd Strike: I had to go to work late to pick up my glasses one day the following week, and when I put them on the prescription was clearly off. When I told the front desk they told me to just wear them for a week and that my eyes would adjust... now this wasn't like, slight blurring... this was major dizzying depth perception weirdness. I called back and asked to speak with the doctor who said, "oh don't wear them, come back, and we'll re-test to see what happened"... so then I had to go back... instead of just dealing with it while I was there... 3rd Strike: Finally retested, had to call a week and a half after getting retested to find out my glasses had been there, and then when I went to pick them up waited in the waiting room for over :30 minutes to pick them up, and there were only 2 other people in the shop that were already being helped... I just sat there... All of that aside, Dr. Garza did do a great job and was super helpful when it came to solving a problem... She just needs to re-examine her staff. read more

I only post two kinds of reviews on Yelp: 1. Incredibly good service/experience; "go go go". 2. Incredibly bad service/experience; "danger". I dropped by this neighborhood shop to have my frames adjusted. I offered to pay because I'm not a regular customer. During the process, a tech snapped my titanium frames. They apologized profusely and said they would make good on them. Two weeks later, no response. Finally, I call, and a supervisor/manager type tells me the only way they can fix them is to replace the entire frame and temples. Cost: $90. I agree to this. I HAVE TO PAY $90 TO FIX THEIR MISTAKE! Nearly a month later, no response. I drop by, and the frames haven't been touched. I speak to a manager, and they're very sorry but there's "nothing they can do." However, Paul Gross Eyeglass Repair in Glendale found the part, and repaired the frames: $30. These people DO NOT STAND BEHIND THEIR WORK. It's pretty clear from the reviews here, not much else. I hate going to be optometrist- they like mess with your eyes and stuff. But dr Canlas made the entire experience awesome! She was good at explaining all her exam steps, and making me feel comfortable throughout it all. You know when they like "look at your retina" but it's really like "dilate and burn skull with super bright light"- she was able to make it so much more tolerable than other optometrists I've been to. She was even good at making sure I got the best for my dollar. Shall I suggest that the entire experience was it fact, pleasureable? I think so. I think so! This is my first yelp review ever. But, this is a tool that helps us make collective decisions nowadays. So, I'm going to be completely honest here for your appreciation. I am a native New Yorker, so naturally, I have that wary skepticism inside of me. I just moved out here in the area and I REALLY needed some new glasses as I finally got insurance with my new job. So, like everyone, I yelped the nearby optometry centers and noticed how close Sunset was. Admittedly, I was nervous: I saw those 1 star, 2 star reviews about how rude the staff was, and the long wait times, etc...and let me confess, I'm pretty sensitive and bad service can really f*ck up my day...but, it truly was conveniently nearby, and I don't have a car yet, so I took a chance here... Perhaps, a few unlucky individuals did experience those things but seriously, this place had the best service I have ever experienced anywhere. I was a total stranger and was immediately welcomed by the staff. One of the receptionist's genuinely remembered me from a phone call a few days prior. I waited maybe, 10 minutes and was seen by the doctor, who was very professional and courteous. I came back the next day to try on some frames and again, I found myself joking with the entire staff. I am one of the worst decision makers with glasses, I narrowed down like three of my favorite frames and everyone, including the VERY polite owner gave me their candid and honest opinions at length, which I appreciated dearly. Their assistance was exceptional and truly helped me make my decision that much easier. From top to bottom, the entire experience actually made my day- which is not what I expected going here. Don't read too much into the bad reviews as everything should be taken with a grain of salt. Professional, friendly and warm. Looking forward to being a regular here in my new home. read more

Very upset and disappointed. the visit itself was great. Maddie was amazing and helped me with my choice. this star is only because of her customer service. i was told that the glasses would be here within two weeks or less. I called after one week to see if there was an update. they told me they had not arrived. I said ok because they said two weeks or less. I called 2 days before the weeks went by. The lady over the phone said they had received shipment from the lab and was going to call me as soon as she check it in to let me know if my glasses were there. She never called. Finally two weeks went by. I called around 9am and asked about my glasses. the lady told me she was going to check with the lab and was going to call me back in 5 minutes. She never did. So I called again to cancel and she tells me the same exact thing which was" they got shipment and was going to call me to let me know if they were there". I told her thats what she had said and I want to cancel my glasses. She responded saying she will tell her manager and call me back. How am I suppose to believe her after she said that 2 times previously. I thought I found the place, but I guess not. It's so disappointing because Maddie was great and the optometrist. read more

Love this optometric center a lil far about 1hr and a half but the staff always great

MY GLASSES TOOK OVER A MONTH TO MAKE & RECEIVED THE WORST SERVICE FROM THE OWNER! I went in a over two months ago to order my glasses after getting my prescription there, but apparently the frames I wanted were not in stock so I was told they had to order my frames first before they make my lenses. It took a week for my frames to get to the shop and while I was there I insisted on paying extra for expedited shipping if necessary due to the urgency of needing my glasses for work and school and not having back up glasses in the meantime- I was told not to worry and that it was unnecessary to pay extra for they will arrive quickly.  After a week of the frames being sent to the lab to make the lenses I called for a follow-up on my glasses. According to the clerk, my glasses were smelly due to the lenses being burned from a broken equipment at their clinic and they did not want to give them to me in a bad condition. I went in person to check them out and they did smell really bad even after three days being aired out. I didn't understand why I was not communicated about the situation before, but I was again told not to worry about it for the lenses were already being ordered again. Again, I expressed my urgency of my glasses and again was told it would be ready for me by the beginning of the week. The following week I called again and I was told my glasses were not ready due to the fact that they have to send my frames to make my lenses- so again I felt lied to because according to the clerk my lenses were already being made so why would I have to wait even longer? At this point, I am becoming impatient and frustrated and asked if I can speak to the manager and they said the manager would be calling me the next day. The next day I called because the manager never called me at the time I was told, and when I did finally reach the manager insisted that everything happening to me was just "my bad luck" and said the best she could do was give me a discount for a second pair of glasses or $20! She also mentioned to me that she was doing her best and promised my glasses would be ready by the end of the week. As I insisted that it wasn't fair and that I needed my glasses ASAP and a better compensation, she became impatient with me and said she had a meeting to go to and hung up the phone. The end of the week came, again I called to follow-up and my glasses were NOT READY and to wait another week! This week I finally received my glasses and NO I DID NOT RECEIVE AN APOLOGY OR COMPENSATION for what happened. I asked the clerk to have the owners call me before I received my glasses, and I finally received a call from her today (2 weeks after receiving my glasses) and she insisted on the same offer for me to take down the post. I was speechless. I can honestly say this was not the fault of the staff at the clinic for they are truly kind and doing what they are told, but as for management and their communication skills... It is THE WORST SERVICE I HAVE EVER RECEIVED! read more
