They did not skimp on the condiments, and the patty itself was juicy. The Sunshine Nachos were gluten-free and absolutely TASTY ! Whatever sauce was on them set those apart from any nachos I've ever experienced and that includes non-vegan nachos. If we lived in Houston, we would have problems not going for the nachos multiple times a month. Plenty of seating, although there were a few tables that needed cleaning. Order at the counter, get your number, seat yourself, and wait until they bring your food out. Parking: You have to park in the lot beside the building. Carnivore speaking: I really want to find that awesome meal here...i have done a few of the other yelper suggestions, but I haven't found that knock my socks of dish yet. Everything I have had is good but I cant say great. Thus far the black bean burger with sweet potato fries, veg chili bean soup, vegan enchiladas...maybe if i had the latter in house and not take it home it might have been better. By the time i got home the sauce on top of the enchiladas were dry...suggestion on to go orders put sauce in separate container. Though I know it may sound weird, but for the burger fries and chili, the combination in which i ate it the flavor of the chili was enhance if i ate it after eating a fry. Still coming back...kale isn't my thing but i see ppl ordering hoards of it, i mean hoards so i am going to have to give it a go next time. The place has a small parking lot to the left but a nice size gated parking lot to the right. This is a vegetarian oasis in meat-crazed desert. This is a small business which has been around for decades and their offerings show it. In fact, I went again today. My favorite items are their raw, cold salads, however, their hot items look fantastic. I have tried the "Boca" meatless burger which is seasoned well and almost tastes like meat. Almost. LoL My non-food based complaints are with the parking situation and when it is busy, there can be times when you can't find a parking spot. Inside, there is also a bit of logjam with the line of customers, which can stack up quite quickly at peak times. I think they should try to come up with a better system for dispensing to-go orders also because I see employees milling around behind the service counter and lots of customers waiting. There is a second register that I think should double as a pickup window so employees are not constantly searching for to-go customers. I'm actually REALLY disappointed to be writing a negative review. I've been here a few times before, and the service was never as terrible as it was today. I was very close to asking for a refund and telling them to forget about my order. The restaurant did not appear to be crazy busy upon my arrival, but there were a few people in the lobby. My friend who came in with me attempted to order a juice, but they did not have it available as advertised on the menu. She was instead told to check the fridge to see if they had any - they didn't. When my friend asked if it could be made, the cashier said the person who does it wasn't there, so it could not. My friend was also hoping to get a black bean patty - again, they were out, so she ended up not ordering anything. I placed my order and an order for a smoothie, and that's when things went from bad to worse. We waited for nearly an HOUR before finally getting my order and the smoothie. Meanwhile, the phones were ringing NON-STOP. One of the phones even looked like it had been left off the hook. The food is good, but it's not "wait almost an hour for take out because they're 'too busy' to answer the phones" good. Upon receiving my order, they confirmed "extra cornbread" - which I actually asked for none, and upon looking in the bag, it was missing my salad. If y'all are gonna take forever, can the order at least be accurate when you hand it to me? That's not even including HOW MUCH dressing was thrown in the salad when they did give it to me. My friends S. and A. came with me to Sunshine's this weekend for a quick, healthy lunch, eschewing the delicious greasiness of M&M Grill around the corner. Poring over the sizable menu, we ended up all settling on the same Soy Chicken Burger. I got a small portion of vegan nachos to share, which was priced at $6 on the menu but was charged at $7.50. :( The cashier apologized and said they'd have new menus coming in soon, but do be mindful of the bill. We got free cups of alkaline pH 8 water from a self-serve pitcher (XD) and sat down among the vegan specialty food displays. Our food came out very speedily - the burgers were wrapped in foil and were perfectly toasty. A. was highly impressed with the faux chicken and noted that if he hadn't been told it was vegan, he would've thought it were the real thing. S. remarked that the texture was just a little bit off from actual chicken, but all of us really liked our choice. At $6.95, it was reasonably priced. The nacho cashew cheese was surprisingly sweet and a bit cold, so it left quite a bit to be desired. I'm new to this "Meatless Monday" concept but so far so good since Sunshine's is semi close by. I passed it up the first time driving by because the exterior leaves much to desire.....lets add a colorful sign or something outside guys! I went around 5:30 on a Monday and it was PACKED and people kept flowing in (grab a menu by the front door so you can make good use of your time while you wait) The lady at the cash register was less enthusiastic to be there, never saw her smile once. Waited 25 minutes for my to-go order so I had the opportunity to watch these 2 young girls (maybe 12 or 13???) unenthusiastically help run food out to the tables. They would just stomp around back and forth from the food window......I assume this is a family run business and this is their after school job. Whatever the case may be.....put a smile on your face girls AND say THANK YOU or "Have a Nice Day" when you hand people their food, geez. Besides the weird customer service, I can see that the food is the reason people keep coming back. My veggie quesadillas were pricey ($12) but they were quite filling and very tasty. I know alot of people that are major fans of Sunshine's so I will return to try other menu items but hopefully it won't be as busy next time so I can see some not-so-bummed employees. I have been to Sunshine so many times, and I absolutely love it. Below is a review I wrote for it while it was at another location, with some updates: I have tried a lot of vegan/vegetarian restaurants around Houston, but nothing compares to this restaurant. I absolutely love Sunshine Deli and try to go as often as I can, which is definitely not enough if I had my way. I have tried the following dishes: Vegan Nachos (4/5): I really enjoy these nachos. The ground meat is very good and pretty convincing (from the perspective of someone who doesn't eat beef). Still not a huge fan of the cashew cheese because I don't think it adds a lot of cheesy flavor to the dish. The There are also jalapenos on this dish, which are key. BBQ Burger (substituted soy chicken for the soy boca) (5/5). Seriously amazing. I'm not a huge fan of boca burgers, so I sub the soy chicken patty for the boca, which I think is great. The patty is really tasty, and the BBQ sauce and pickles on top added a necessary tang and crunch. I order this every time I go to Sunshine -- so good. Tex Mex Burger (3.5/5). The chipotle sauce was very tasty, but the boca burger was a bit overspiced. There was a pretty overpowering nutmeg flavor in the patty, which I did not care for. It was still quite good, though. Garlic Kale Salad (5/5). The kale is always fresh, and the garlic sauce is incredibly potent and also amazing. I don't know what was in the dressing, but it tasted very creamy despite being vegan. I really enjoyed it. It is, however, flavored very heavily with garlic, which some people may not enjoy. If you love garlic like I do, you'll really enjoy the dressing. Almond Pate (4/5): Really tasty vegan take on pate that is loaded with veggies including carrots and celery. I really love this dish and pretty much order it every time I go. Vegan Spaghetti (3/5): This is an all right version of spaghetti. It was really nothing special. Definitely not one of their outstanding dishes, so I would recommend trying something else. A fun local place that churns out vegan food without taking away from the neighborhood burger joint appeal. We split a spicy black bean burger and a soy chicken burger with sides of garlic kale and lemon kale salads along with an order of sweet potato fries. Both burgers were well-seasoned and I appreciated that the whole wheat bun was toasted and held up to the sauces used. The texture of the patties were substantive, and between the two we liked the black bean better for the extra kick it had. For the salads, the kale was crisp but sufficiently marinated, though perhaps a bit too much so in terms of the amount of dressing we got, which might have been because we placed some of the last orders of the day. The raw garlic in the garlic dressing was well-balanced, so while strong, it wasn't overpowering. The sweet potato fries had potential but our order was pretty cold--but we're not one to complain since they were nice enough to let us in after they'd technically closed to join our two other friends who'd arrived ahead of us. My son is a vegan so we would frequent this location at least three times a week. The service and food has changed dramatically. They are so unorganized now. There are alotof new people working there who really don't care about service. They talk on the cell phone while you're trying to place an order. They look at the ringing work phone and do not answer it, but continued to talk on the cell phone. The quality of the food has changed as well. The veggie burger I ordered was cold in the inside, my sons black bean burger and sweet potato fries were cold. I can say that this is the third time that they have messed up my food. It was too spicy for my taste buds but I generally cannot handle spicy food. Nonetheless, I battled through the spiciness because it was just that good. I brought my boyfriend with me the second time I came and he also ordered the Tex Mex burger. He is a total meat-loving carnivore and has absolutely no plans of ever becoming a vegetarian and yet he LOVED it. He said if he didn't know any better, he would've thought it was real meat. He told me that he also doesn't like sweet potato fries but he really liked these so there must be something magical about those fries. This time around I ordered the portobello mushroom burger, which I enjoyed, but it was nothing to rave about. My boyfriend really liked the vegan nachos and everybody raves about them but I don't think they're all that. They're good, just not crazy good, in my opinion. I held off from making a review time and time but they service here is consistent. Every time i make an order it's never ready, or they gave it to someone else or they didn't receive it. This has happened on every occasion. We walk in no one is at the register no one greeting the workers walk by and say just wait. Someone should be at the register at all times greeting and taking orders or assisting customers. I order nachos I'm not sure why the worker would put them in the bag upside down. Yes upside down so it's spilling out of the plastic lid!! I checked my food inside the place mentioned it to the bagger, "oh sorry ". Wow. You guys really need to do better with training the workers professionalism and customer service. The online ordering system should be updated with the correct time to pick up orders. Customers schedule pick up times according to their schedule. Making an order online arriving on time to pick up and still waiting 20min is ridiculous. I think I have met my quota on patience with the lack of customer service at this establishment. My visit on the 27th is going to have to be the last time I patronage this business for a couple of months. In the spirit of supporting black business I'll be frequenting Green seed vegan moving forward. On my visit today I came in and there was only one person ahead of me so I'm thinking I'll be in and out. I walk up to the register and five minutes pass before anyone even Greets me, the whole time the employees are having side conversations with a friend that's standing up at the counter, meanwhile I'm just standing there looking crazy... Eventually a girl approaches the register and I'm thinking she is coming to ring me up...ught wrong, she rings up her coworkers food and makes a point to mention that she is "off the clock". Some other girl that was conversing with the friend after I have been standing at the register 6-7 mins, finally decides she'll take my order now. 15 minutes pass after my order was taken and still no food, however one of their friends that had come in to order behind me gets his number called. There were 3 orders placed behind mine and some how they all manage to get their food before me..."two of those customers being friends of the employees up front". Well one of the people that ordered after me and subsequently received their order before me returns saying "I didn't order black bean nachos" And what do you know that was my actual order..."which I still don't get. They go and make his order right and I'm still left sitting... Well a few more mins pass, I am just about out of patience and at this point I'm looking at them crazy, because they are very unorganized and unprofessional...But the girl at the counter gives me the nachos that another customer just brought back and offers a half ass apology and some free garlic kale...I declined because it would probably take another 20 mins just for the kale which is ready made to come out. When I go out to eat plant based food, it's all about the FLAVOR and Sunshine definitely has that in abundance! As soon as you walk into the store/deli your senses are delighted by the warm and natural look of the interior, the cool vibe of the music, and the wonderful aroma of FRESHLY PREPARED dishes.
