I highly recommend getting a flight to taste their wide selection of amazing wines. Our server, Isaac, was awesome. I rarely leave negative reviews, but I felt compelled to share my experience at Sunstone Winery. The problems started before we even arrived. When I called to modify my reservation a week prior to our visit and add additional guests, the staff member I spoke with was rude, sounded annoyed by my questions, and ended the call abruptly without even saying goodbye. Looking back, I should have taken that as a warning of what was to come. When we arrived for our 11:00 a.m. reservation, the host stand staff were not welcoming or friendly. I was informed that because of the size of our party (12 people), two tables could be pushed together, but we would be charged an additional $50. This had never been communicated to me during my phone call. Had I known there would be an extra charge simply to accommodate the size of our group, I would not have proceeded with the reservation. I then asked if our group could be seated at two separate tables, but was told no because the tables were in different server sections. There was no effort to offer alternatives or find a solution. The interaction felt very transactional and unaccommodating. What made this even more frustrating was that the winery was not busy. In fact, we were told it was "graduation season" and a slower weekend, so the lack of flexibility was surprising. Eventually, I suggested that we sit at one table and have a few people stand. As it turned out, the table was actually large enough for our entire group, which left me confused as to why the additional table and fee had been suggested in the first place. As we were being seated, we were informed that because of our group size, we would be doing bottle service and would not be permitted to participate in wine tastings. This was another policy that had never been mentioned when I modified my reservation. Since this was our first visit to the area, wine tasting was the primary reason we chose to visit Sunstone. At that point, we were seriously considering leaving altogether. The hosts repeatedly asked who I had spoken with on the phone, which I couldn't remember. I explained that I wasn't blaming the individual helping us at that moment, but I was disappointed that important details regarding fees and tasting restrictions had never been communicated. Thankfully, Aaron stepped in. He interrupted the conversation and offered to accommodate our group with tastings. Aaron completely changed the trajectory of our visit. He was kind, professional, knowledgeable, and genuinely interested in making sure we had a great experience. Thanks to him, we stayed, enjoyed the wines, and ended up purchasing more than 20 bottles. The wine was great, and Aaron was exceptional. Unfortunately, the rest of our experience with the staff left a lasting impression. Customer service starts long before the wine is poured, and every interaction before Aaron felt dismissive and unfriendly. The only reason I'm giving more than one star is because of Aaron. Had a reservation for 12pm and we were able to be seated right away for our tasting. The property itself is very cute with lots of space and they encourage you to walk around and explore. There is a cave room, an indoor bar area, and lots of open patio space. When we got there they were playing music which was really fun and added to the overall vibe there but it stopped around 1:00 - not sure why or if they always only play music in the early part of the day. I wish they would've kept it on though I've seen other reviews say they will sometimes have food trucks but we didn't see any during our 2+ hours there. They have small snacks like charcuterie though but we didn't try it. Our main issue with the winery is the service. We ordered 2 flights and an additional glass of our favorite from the tasting at the end. It took an extremely long time to get the next tasting each time and almost seemed like our table was forgotten. Asked for the check and it never came either and eventually walked up to a counter to pay that way. Definitely saw other people trying to wave down the server for their checks / to order and having the same issues. The wines themselves were good and I think it's still a pretty winery to check out - just make sure you are not in a rush or on a schedule. read more

I had received a couple recommendations for Sunstone, so some friends and I decided to check it out on a Los Olivos day. And I was so happy to find that it was so much nicer than I had expected!! Sunstone is MASSIVE. I'm so used to going to wineries that have small tasting rooms, but there was so much outdoor seating to choose from. Not to mention the entire location was so beautiful. So peaceful and relaxing. If you get the chance, walk up to the balcony area and just take in the whole view. They have a good wine tasting flight - $30/person with 6 wines. Weren't my favorite wines ever, but still good. I made reservations online, but we they weren't necessary. So much open space. Staff here were friendly. Definitely recommend stopping by. Grab a glass, relax, and maybe explore the grounds a bit. read more

The ambience was excellent. Huge area. Many different areas to sit outside or inside. A beautiful warm / sunny day in the fall . We sat outside , one of the picnic tables with an umbrella. They all food and drink from outside. (More later on that. ) No food truck. Evidently, not enough people were buying from the trucks that they flake sometimes. No biggie , because most people are bringing their food. We did notice they started construction of a restaurant! Which is exciting. We inquired about it, and were told once the restaurant is operational we can't bring food/drink from outside. Ouch , that's a blow in my opinion. The area is perfectly setup for picnic style. Maybe I'm wrong , and the food will be amazing. But limited on options, isn't a plus. Wine tasting is $30 per person. They waive one tasting if you buy 3 bottles. Bottles $35-70. The wine is average, in my opinion. The wine, is not the reason people come to this winery. The place is amazing. They have an area for members only (we went with friends who are members) , but it was not open (probably staff shortage) - which kind was a bummer cause that area was even better than where we sat. Our server was JP. JP didn't know our friends were members (not his fault , but should have known. However JP didn't treat or make us welcomed as members.). We got the flight , and JP had no interest to talk about the wine. JP would present the bottle, announce the name and pour. We had initiated the conversation one time asking about the wine , and he did shared some details. JP served the Syrah twice, and never poured the last one , the Reserve. We asked about the dessert wine. JP described it , and without asking if we wanted to buy a pour he casually pointed out you can't enjoy a dessert wine after a full tasting. Oh, excuse me. My wife is an idiot interested in dessert wine. Brilliant one buddy. Granted it was late , and possibly at that point he couldn't sell a pour ? (Maybe not because he did ask for a tip , though our tastings were covered from the membership. Still - not professional in my opinion. We came here to visit the vineyard because someone in our group is Star Trek super fan, and the Sunstone Winery is featured as the winery where Captain Jean Luc-Picard retires to in one of the TV series. Anyway if you come to visit and you came to see the villa that is featured in the TV series, prepare to be disappointed because the winery tasting room and the villa are apparently not the same thing and you have to book a visit separately. There is not much to see if youre in the courtyard. So even though there was a misunderstanding about seeing the villa, the actual experience at the winery tasting part of it was pretty mediocre in and of itself. The staff member that helped us out was quite slow, not particularly friendly and seemed mostly disinterested in helping show our group what Sunstone is about. Our guy did the absolute minimum, he poured us the minimal amount marked on the wineglass, he gave us 6 pours and that was that. He'd take between 15-20 minutes between each pour, as you can imagine for 1 ounce pours this was interminable especially since it was 100 degrees out. No waters were offered or any exploration of other wines or anything really. Just the bare minimum. We were also not really fond of the wines that were poured.The best part of the experience is that you can bring your own food if you order a wine tasting. read more

We had a very enjoyable visit. Maurizio was our server. He's new but what a fabulous welcoming attitude. People will put up with a lot but how welcomed one is makes it worthwhile or a dead duck. Nothing else matters as much for many people. We went for a tasting. Reviews mentioned the Grenache Rose. No longer available. I am not a wine aficionado but the nothing really stood out for my palate. It was nice. The Eros was better than the rest. Wife likes bubbly wines so that was that. Happy at being welcomed. This winery has a really great view and relaxing atmosphere that definitely makes me want to stop by again! The grounds have plenty of outdoor seating and lawn tables, with many shaded areas perfect for a picnic. We ended up grabbing 3 bottles after liking the cab and pinot noir as well. It seems with that many people and seating here, the younger staffing here didn't feel as engaging if you're about chatting up selections or asking more about the tasting. Even after being seated, no one helped us for long while until even the manager noticed and took care of the issue. Visited this place during my bachelorette trip. This was a beautifully designed winery with amazing views. We had booked sunset time and our pictures all turned out amazing. I opted in for their wine tasting experience and I definitely recommend it as you get to try different variations of wine that they offer. Service in my opinion could have been better as it took a while for us to get seated although we had a reservation. Additionally they would take a long time to refill the complimentary bread and olive oil selection which they had inside the winery. We explored the place and took lots of photos unfortunately the villa as well as the upstairs area were closed due to a wedding so that's the only part of the winery we did not get to see. According to our waitress advance booking for the villa is recommended which is separate from the winery tour reservation. Overall I do recommend this place although service can hopefully improve in the future. read more

The server seemed annoyed and would disappear. There was gaps between pour for approximately 30 min. We didn't enjoy the experience, as we had to chase down the waiter to come back for the next pour. Also, it was overly crowded with kids, and dogs (I mean we went there during a long weekend- which is expected) but didn't expect a daycare. Skip this winery. I loved the wines here, good wine, it's one of those wineries you must visit when in the Santa Ynez valley. I hadn't made a reservation and they were able to accommodate me and my dogs on a busy afternoon. I wanted to be close to the music playing, was seated on picnic tables, mine didn't have an umbrella and that was ok but i got overwhelmed with the unsupervised kids throwing things next to my senior dog, I got up, grabbed my well behaved dogs and asked my server if I could move to a different area, the quiet one ! he was hesitant and told me I was gonna have to go back to the bar for my pours, fine with me I chose peace lol After the initial chaos I was able to relax and taste their wine, my server was helping other folks in my area and in the end was able to pour my tasting and I didn't have to be the ones going back and forth . There is plenty of parking but gets busy and you might have to wait for a space or park around the vineyard, thankfully they did have a person directing folks to park. read more

Our first time at Sunstone and I was beyond disappointed. After the waiter brought our wine and charcuterie board she didn't bring any plates or napkins. We waited 15 minutes before asking another staff member walking by to assist. As we began to eat I felt wine being thrown on the back of my legs. As I turn around a white male waiter had picked glasses from the table behind us and tossed the left over beverages in a glass straight out in my direction!!! Absolutely unacceptable. My husband immediately addressed the waiter who said he didn't look when tossing it. Why would any waiter discard beverages out in the dinning area to begin with when people are seated in close proximity. And to top that off, our waitress didn't come check on us for an hour! I immediately expressed my disappointment for the poor service and overall experience. I will never go back and would highly recommend anyone reading this to find a more well trained, mannered and facilitated establishment. read more

Great spot for wine tastings. You can bring your own food and water. It's a relaxing time especially if the weather is nice. Tables have umbrellas which is great. They also have food trucks available, as well as music. Truly a lovely spot. It's $25 for a tasting of 5 wines, but we got a 6th- a rose- thrown in. My favorite was Chardonnay. If you don't drink a certain wine, they can accommodate your tastes. Service was very courteous. NOTE: there are yellow jackets everywhere! We stumbled upon Sunstone while we were in town looking for a place to sip on some vino. I'll warn you that I'm more of a fan of the laid back kind of wineries, so if you're familiar with Temecula you'll know what I'm referring to. When we arrived we were asked if we had a reservation by the hostess, which we didn't but were seated quickly anyway. They have a nearby server that comes up to you and takes care of you, but we were expecting somewhere a little more relaxed where you're allowed to walk around freely rather being confined to your table. Some couples did get up to stroll around but had to tell their server they were coming back so their spots weren't taken. Not really my vibe. I have been a member of Sunstone in the past. I've also tasted many times in the past with my daughter. I now live in New Mexico. I brought two girlfriends today. The wines were horrible. I stated to the server that my girlfriend didn't like her wine and poured it out. I thought he would offer something as an alternative. We continued on with the standard tasting. We didn't order the reserve as we just arrived in town and had many tastings to still try. We ordered only two between three ladies because of driving duties. We said many pours were too earthy, never offering an alternative. The last pour was a port type, non of us could drink it. We left it on the table. At the financial close out I let the server know we didn't like any of the wines. He stated, " you should have ordered the reserve tasting" and then he explained at the end the winery is known for the reserve wines! We should have ordered the reserve wine list! I think the server should have offered alternatives. I have other wine clubs in town, and I look forward to a better experience over the next few days. read more

He told us to calm down because we were disturbing other guest when they were having their kids play their iPad loud. Be aware of Neil, if you have kids and they are laughing and having fun. The winery is lovely. I had a great time here. It's very relaxing and kind of like a retreat. It's actually quite a big property, with benches and tables all around so there's plenty of space for patrons to sit. There's even a stone cave that has benches and seats underneath that offers shade and to keep cool during summer months. The service was very nice. The wine sommelier took her time to explain to us the wine choices and gave us a tour of the entire property. The wines tasted great and there were many varieties to choose from. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in Santa Inez. read more
