Take Path B - the booze train - and anesthetize yourself against the aforementioned comments, but risk being too sloshed to leave at the end of the night. Even if you choose all the right options, there's no telling if a family get-together will end pleasantly or in a hide the knives scenario. This year erred toward a hide the knives kind of night, by the time I left I was in need of a drink (or three). After a failed booze run to TJ's, I headed for home racking my brain for a liquor store that might be open on Christmas. Fortunately, like a beacon, the lights of USA Beverage called out to me. The store isn't huge, but it has a decent selection of beer. You'll find a nice array of domestics in bottles, cans, sixers and cases. If you're on the hunt for craft beer or imports, you'll probably be disappointed; the selection was mostly mainstream brands like Sierra Nevada, Goose Island and Guinness. I was hoping to pick up some Strongbow, but didn't see it or any hard ciders. The one thing I didn't like was that there weren't prices next to many of the items. This place is convenient, but when I'm not on the hunt for emergency booze, I'd probably head over to Famous. They have a much more robust selection.

The closest grocery stores are Cermak Produce, some corner stores, and a Family Dollar. FoodSmart is clearly catering to the hipsters slowly moving west and south from Wicker Park and Logan Square, respectively. There's definitely a huge selection of food and liquor here for everyone, but they specialize in fresh organic food with a lot of vegetarian and vegan selections. Yay! There's a lot crammed in here, so take your time looking around. My favorite part of the store is their fresh food since they have veggies, fruits, and pre-prepared meals that have very few preservatives. Yasss! Prices are typical for the brands and quality of foods that they carry, which is great on this lonely stretch of Armitage. Liquor section is huge and there's tastings available if you want to try something. They also have a new-ish food counter where you can buy hot food and drinks while you relax in the store. I think FoodSmart has good things going on and I hope they expand and continue to offer awesome stuff in this part of the neighborhood.

Check out the Wine sale aisle as you walk in, I love the great selection of craft beer here, and recently put together a great selection of Chicago and NW IN beers to take back to Wisconsin. They'll box up your haul in old liquor boxes for easy transport, and Hopslam is readily available here during its limited release.
