Getting called for jury duty is never convenient but it happens. I got my notification in the mail that I had to call on thanksgiving to find out if I was in or not. I called, put my info in and found out I had to go the following week. Fast forward to the day I had to go. I had to be there at 7:30 am, that's a bit rough. Parking was easy and plentiful. I arrived early to find a long line that only got longer as I waited. Finally, they started letting people in about 8 am or so, but it was slow going. Once inside it was like airport screening. You put your stuff on the conveyor belt and walk through and get wanded if they detect metal. You are then scanned in before you enter a big open airy room with lots of seating. I found a padded chair and sat and waited. They keep you pretty informed throughout the process. We had to watch 4 videos. There were forms to fill out if you couldn't serve due to financial hardship, caregiving etc. after all of that is done you wait. There are bathrooms, coffee vending and regular vending machines. They called the names of the jurors who got picked and at least half the room left (it was pretty full). The rest of us were on standby and got to leave by noon because the other cases didn't need us. All in all, it was a pretty easy experience. The building is nice inside and it flowed smoothly. I don't know of anyone who loves their jury assignment. But if you have to fulfill this civil duty responsibility, the Superior Court in Vista is the place to go. I used to go to the Superior Court downtown and it was always a nightmare. Parking was far away and expensive. The waiting room is small and always packed. This Vista Superior Court building is huge and the waiting room is spacious. They have updated their introduction and step-by-step instructions with videos on how the selection process works and your responsibilities of being a juror. The 7:30 am report time is kind of loose (but don't hold me on it) because I was stressed out trying to get through 15 and 78 during the morning traffic and thought that I was in trouble for being 20 minutes late. But when I got there the line to check in was still wrapped around the building and I had to wait another 15 minutes to get through. The other great thing about this location is the free and abundant parking spaces. read more

DISABLED? WHEELCHAIR USER? DO YOU SUFFER FROM A TERMINAL CONDITION? BWARE!! A women working in the Family Court department whom answered the phone this morning took it upon herself to discriminate and treat me like less of a person because I was requesting accommodation and help over the phone. She was about to help me, and ask me for my case number. I asked my son to grab my paperwork for me, so I could give it to her. Without hesitation, she right away told me she couldn't help me over the phone, and when I acted surprised because she was just about to help me, she straight lied and accused me of raising my voice and yelling at her. I am very well aware of this tactic used by bullies. I have a recording of the interaction and a witness that was right next to me and heard the whole conversation to prove it. She was purposely lying and trying to antagonize me into some sort of episode over the phone so that she could accuse me of whatever she wanted to accuse me of. You don't get to gaslight and antagonize people like me and get away with it lady. All you had to do is wait one second for my son to get me the case number so that you could've done what you were already going to do. Instead you chose to lie, manipulate, and antagonize someone like me. SHAME ON YOU! Find a new job if you're so sick of handling this one with some decency and integrity. Lord knows you have jobs security and are blessed. People in charge, please review the voice recordings of this morning that you have on your end so you can hear what I am talking about for yourself. People like me will not tolerate being bullied by your employees. We will not tolerate being pushed into further illness and sickness because of unnecessary stress added on by your employees. My experience with the San Diego County Superior Court, specifically under Commissioner Cumba, has been deeply unjust and damaging. Despite evidence and legal documentation, Cumba disregarded facts and allowed wage garnishments without valid court orders, leading to thousands in overpayments. My license was suspended--crippling my ability to earn income--and false arrears were reported to credit agencies, destroying my credit and blocking me from obtaining financing. Court orders were ignored, due process felt nonexistent, and rather than uphold the law, this court enabled bureaucratic abuse through rubber-stamp decisions. Jury Duty. Here's the information I looked for, but couldn't find for the Vista courthouse: I received summons and it said to check online after 5 pm on Thursday. Was not called in. Had to call back on Friday after 5 pm, and was called in to arrive Monday at 7:30 am. Arrived 7:32 am. Parking easy. Appeared to have long lines to enter, but actually only took 10 minutes to enter. Line at right door appeared to be shorter. Xray. No glass bottles allowed. Metal drink bottles OK. Seated at 7:45-7:50 am. Big hall about 20% full, would end up being 80% full with ~200-250 people. I got one of last tables to work, where all the people with laptops were. Bring a power strip as I didn't get an outlet. They can reprint your summons if you forgot it. Snack bar with good prices, coffee, etc. next to jury room. Cash and card accepted. Jury duty didn't start until 8:07 am, though everyone seemed to be in by 8 am. The woman handing out plastic name tag holders rolled her cart at 8:07, when judge started giving short talk, followed by movie. There is no check in so far, but I didn't see anyone come in late, so I would definitely be there by about 8 am. They started calling jurors to be on a panel at 8:47 am. Then they gave us a break from 8:47 - 9:05 am. Everyone is off for lunch 12-1:30 pm, they announced. They had a 10-day jury, as well a a couple 3-5 day juries. They said 40-50 people get called in per jury, which gets narrowed to 12 jurors plus alternates. I was not selected and was released to go home at 12 pm. There's free good speed wifi. You can listen to conference calls on Zoom in the hallway starting at about 8:47 am if you have headphones, assuming you don't have to pay close attention and you can leave the calls periodically whenever they make announcements, which are audible from the hallway. read more

At least it is in North County. Jury duty is a civic duty. They have plenty of seating, a quiet room, books and magazines to read and take home, free WiFi, and you might get lucky to serve on a jury. There is a cafe on premises and plenty of restaurant options nearby, including Islands, Rubios, Jersey Mikes, etc. Plenty of parking. Staff are nice. Everything is explained in the beginning and with a dvd to watch. read more

Court sucks !! I don't think anyone enjoys spending half their day in a court room waiting to see if they're going to be sentenced or how much fines you gotta pay! But this court house is actually pretty helpful. a bit tiny maybe that's why everyone is so nice & helpful. Pretty old building and only 1 story. but the security in the front doors are super duper friendly and so helpful I kept asking them where's this and where's that and without hesitation they happily assisted me with a smile. Did I also mention there is a TON of parking ?! And it's free ! Not like downtown where you have to pay a good $12 for 1 hour....nope not in Vista !! The pros about being inside a court room... idk if it's the area or what but while waiting on my case to be called I did get to listen to a juicy case where a guy and his homies jumped this female at a bus stop and tried to scare her with a gun he told her "why you snitch for, now you gotta pay the price." It's the most wonderful time of the year!! No I'm not talking about the holidays, I'm talking about jury duty! *sarcasm* Time to do our civic duty folks ! Prefer this North County location over Downtown. Plenty of free parking which is a huge plus !!! There was construction going on so I had to take a small detour. The jury waiting room was spacious and had free wi-fi! There's a separate room with tables to work on your laptop as well as plug-in charging stations. Restroom was well-maintained and had plenty of stalls. Staff and security were surprisingly pleasant and quite entertaining. Checking in was fast and effortless. To start off the day, we watched an introductory video about jury service. The judge also came to introduce himself and discussed the trials for the day. Fortunately for us, there was only one case that day. We waited for a few hours until they called the first and only batch of names. There were about 30 names called and I wasn't one of them. Woot ! I don't mind. To kill time I'd recommend bringing a book or people watch. Although, I met a friendly gentleman next to me who was quite the chatterbox. It definitely helped the time fly by. They dismissed us at around 1130am woohoo! This is honestly record time. I would have stayed until 3pm Downtown and getting out of there during rush hour is a pain! On the other hand, this court was quick to make a selection and getting to and from this North County location was easy peasy! I highly recommend this spot for your jury service. May be quite a drive for some, but I think it's worth it. See you again next year ! Maybe I'll get lucky again ! read more

Vista Courthouse review. I was called in as a witness at the Vista Courthouse. I spent two days here...waiting...waiting..waiting.. The seats outside the courtrooms are not comfortable, but the people watching is incredible. Divorce negotiations, family trials, a few tears, a few angry people, and a whole lot of anticipation. It's a mass of humanity, and don't be surprised if you run into a few people you know. Tips - The best part of this courthouse is the ample free parking!! - BTW, this same parking lot hosts a rather large farmers market on Saturday. Search Vista Farmers Market. Worth it! - Check out the Small Clams courtroom docket. Most of the cases are "Pay Day loans Vs...." Jury Duty Tips - If you don't want to do Jury Duty, stay at the Vista Courthouse. Fewer cases, many of which are drunk driving or minor drugs ( quick trials). - Else, if you do want to be on a real trial change your jury court to the downtown San Diego Courthouse. While the parking is $$$ down there, jury trials are much more common and more interesting based on my experience. read more

Chaotic but that's how courthouses operate. The security is good but it is difficult to navigate what you need when it comes to family law. "Everyone is innocent until proven guilty" does not apply to minorities. The facility is pretty clean and signage enables one to get where they need to go. Nobody wants to spend a day in a courthouse so don't expect red carpet treatment. You are there to either take care of business or serve. My advice is to do research in advance and be patient. Employees have a tough job and I empathize with all they are responsible for. Glad we have them. I can't imagine going to that environment every day...most are saints. read more

I actually enjoyed my time here. The people here are super friendly and there are some comfortable chairs on the side of the main jury lounge. Everyone knows that Jury Duty is not the most fun thing in the world so of course you don't go in expecting to be happy and having fun. Most of the time, it's a waste of time because you end up sitting there for hours and go home after a long day. However, this court location gives their jurors wi-fi and there's a snack bar outside where you can buy snacks. There are a few outlets on the sides so you can plug in if you need to. I came a little early (7:45am) and had no problem finding parking and it's free. I will be coming here next time- it beats the downtown location. read more

I don't think going to court will ever be a "good" time or something someone wants to do. That being said I think that people go in expecting this user friendly process and that's never what courts have been. The clerks, are actually all very helpful if you just approach them nicely, and don't argue with them, anything they're telling you they have no ability to fix if you disagree. Please also remember that SDSC is very understaffed. So just be patient, and do your research before you come in. Bring in your three copies, make sure you know that if you're filing an ex parte or restraining order (thats considered an ex parte too) or a continuance on a TRO, you will be waiting around for the judge to grant or deny your request. This is normal in most courts, this isn't the fault of the Vista Court. Just remember that the court clerks are just the messengers, don't argue with them, they didn't deny or decide whatever it is you disagree with. For what it's worth I think they are doing an amazing job with COVID, making sure you can still access the court, all while also making sure that they're doing their part to keep you safe. I also want to say that the Deputies in the front are always very kind, friendly, and really helpful. This is one of the better courts I've ever had to deal with. read more

The officers at the door are very friendly. However the red head at the round desk is absolutely awful. She is beyond rude. Treats everyone like they are idiots. Turns around and complains about them when they leave loud enough everyone hears. Sends people to the incorrect location and blames them when confronted by other staff. Of course no one loves going to court. Honestly I am pretty sure the average person hates going to court because your having to defend yourself against something or someone. Well I have to say that for a court house I very much enjoy this one to the San Diego location. Not only are the fast when you show up early and on time. Everyone working here was very helpful and calm mannered, which is a nice change. I find that when interacting in places like court houses and police stations and border crossings that sometimes the employees can have a superior attitude about them. I really have no patience for this and see no need for it. I enjoyed that everyone from the bailiffs to the judges had a helpful calm demeanor about them. Come here for the parking Stay for the free magazines Actually stay because it's your civic duty. It's a court complex. Nothing exciting about it except for the free parking. The only annoyance was when we were all in line in front of the proper building we for some unknown reason directed to go to the next building over and stand in line over there for security. And then make our way back over to the building we were previously standing in front of. Not a big deal but annoying just the same. The sheriffs at security have a bit of an attitude but I wasn't there to make out with them so who cares. Chairs are not the worst and my butt didn't go numb for at least an hour. Have a decent selection of books and magazines. The coffee cart is overpriced but maybe she gets charged a hefty amount to have a coffee cart at the courts so she gets a pass. It is a very interesting people watching experience. I brought a book but half the time I was there I was wondering to myself "what the hell is she wearing?" Not a too terrible time to spend the day. I came here because I am fighting a traffic ticket, and you should too. Seriously. I like that this place feels more like a campus. When you turn in, go to the right until the end and traffic court will be the last building. When you walk in you have to go through a metal detector. To be expected especially in this day and age. Right when you walk in there will be an old style deli type of number dispenser. Rush over and grab that number. I don't care if you want to ask some questions first, use the restroom, or even call your congressman about how traffic tickets are a thinly veiled tax on those who drive. Grab a number! I must have had a Soviet type of upbringing because I will naturally go grab a number or get into a line. Once I had a number in hand I went over to the line for information. The lady behind the desk was just an awful person. I know she gets a lot of dumb questions and people who want to explain their stories to her even though she does't care and can do nothing for them. I get that. If I get it, then why can't you get that this is what you do for employment? You answer stupid questions all day. That is your job. You're welcome, and thank you for working at the San Diego Superior Court home of traffic violators and those who shrink back from their duty to pay child support. So as she was chewing out everyone in line before me I plastered what could only be called a clown like smile on my face and bravely stepped up to her buffet of pain when it was my turn. She was admittedly pretty nice to me, but I was wearing a suit and acted like I was nice. Faithful readers know the truth. I found out that I was right to take a number to submit my Trial by Declaration. I also found out to get another 30 day extension after using my first freebie (we all get one if we want but you have to go online or call to get it) I would have to go to court. Lamers. I waited for my number to be called in the uncomfortable waiting area. I like most people used my phone for entertainment and was even able to post a Yelp review. it took a little over an hour for them to call my number. The clerks were helpful and put in my paperwork as well as answered some questions for me. They were not overly chipper but they did not make me feel like my questions were demeaning their humanity. In the end I got what I needed to do finished. It took up time but it wasn't like I was there super early in the morning either. I am sure there are worse courts. I just wish that people who worked at info booths understood where they were sitting and what was expected of them. I know for a fact that woman does not treat people outside of the court house the way she treated them inside when she had the power to answer questions. It saddens me that if you give one person who clearly isn't adapt at dealing with people some small shred of power often times they use it to make other peoples days almost as miserable as theirs must be. I found this courthouse very efficient and easy to navigate. The building opens at 8am, but the individual departments open at 8:30. There are two sections to the courthouse, north and south. Information booths can be found at both areas. My department opened at 8:30. I was back in my car, done with everything which included several lines and then waiting for my number to be called, at 9:35. No lie. I expected a longer wait since my friend told me she sat for 3 hours waiting for her number to be called. The employees I interacted with were pleasant. I spoke to several people at the information desks to confirm I was in the right spot and they were all pleasant. The clerks I spoke to were very efficient, made sure I knew what the next step was, and even commented how lucky I was since it wasn't a busy day. The wait time was minimal. Pro: There's plenty of free parking. Con: Who really wants to go to a courthouse for anything?! read more

Avoid family court services. ESPECIALLY THIS COMMISSIONER PATTI C. RATEKIN If your a male and fighting custody of your child don't let your case fall under this commissioner she's completely Bias. I filed for custody when my child was 2 because after separating from the mother of our son she disappeared and denied me any contact with our son for over 2 weeks. Filing and getting assigned PATTI C. RATEKIN was the worst thing to happen. It's taken me 4 years to finally get my son at 49% after I filed. No criminal record I served in the UNITED STATES MARINES FOR 8years And I still get no respect from RATEKIN. Extremely bias. I also learned from attorneys that you have the right to see an actual judge since she's only a commissioner you can deny her seeing your case in which I strongly recommend. She also always sides with the mothers. Don't let her decide your child's future seek a fair trial. read more

So the thing is the Vista Courthouse is not a bad place to go for jury duty. It's relatively easy to get to (far superior to downtown), and has no parking issues (free parking!!!). They have wireless, a quiet room, free magazines and books from public donations, vending machines, coffee cart, plenty of food places nearby. But I just can't justify giving jury duty more than three stars. Sorry Vista Courthouse Lady. You had a sense of humor and tried to make the waiting pleasant, but a waiting game is a waiting game. Nope. Can't say I'm a fan of jury duty, although I didn't mind it either. I just wish the two people with the horrible cold sitting near me had stayed home. Family court services is the worst place anyone should go to, the court system is biased towards men and they're not even pretending not to. I personally had to deal with a commissioner there for 11 years and throughout those years I learned that she's a very biased person, always giving females priority, I say there every time and I saw cases before me and she was automatically against men regardless. I personally sat there and got a very unfair hearing for 11 years and still going. I have a clean record with no issues with the law and still won't give me full custody. If anyone is to face FCS; request to be seen by a real judge of you want a fair treatment. #boycottPatti# read more

Most importantly, free parking, and a lot of it! This courthouse has very efficient security. For faster admission, use the entrance to the far left because the line is a lot shorter. But it will probably take you just as long to walk back to the North building as it would to wait in line for security there because they are all really quick. As a lawyer, we seem to be the only people that like being in court. That's not always true, however, since I have to go to the business office all of the time to pick up dockets and pull files. They charge $0.50 per copy. They take all types of payment, with the exception of discover card. I do like how the dockets are organized by attorney last name, because it makes it easier to find what I need. Everyone that works in the business office is always really helpful and nice. For non-attorneys, make sure you pull a number and wait outside in the hallway for them to call you name because they are sticklers about keeping the room clear. The business office in the North building has an attorney line to the right, but it usually takes a few minutes to get helped when there is a line. However, more often than not, the attorney line is closed because they seem to always inform me that they are short on staff. Overall, this business office is pretty good and the courthouse security is good. The North building could use a remodel and a few more employees in the business office, but other than that no complaints. read more

The chairs are comfortable well for me. The top section of the chair has a bending mechanism that makes it comfortable to recline a tad bit. The coffee here is alright. Good lighting, spacious enough seating space. Bathrooms are decently clean. Please take everything out of your pockets before you get to the checkpoint makes the security checking go by a lot quicker don't be that person. No one likes being here the faster we go in the faster we leave thank you. read more

I was lucky enough be selected for jury duty. I arrived at 7:45 am, waited in line to go through the metal detector. Then I proceeded to the jury lounge. The seats are comfortable, but the waiting around is awful. The first jury of 40 was called at 11:15 am then a second jury was called at 11:50 am. At 12 noon the rest of us were able to leave. I almost skipped to my car. If you are selected to serve, bring a book or your laptop. Also, you are supposed to dress business casual but one lady was wearing denim overalls and others wore shorts. Granted, it's the day before Thanksgiving this time around, so they let us go 15 minutes after 8 a.m. But both times have been a convenient, comfortable process. So they're not allowed to have any interaction with my post, it's out, it's true, why not go with it? The problem needs to be fixed not swept under the mat. I have two written complaints against the Escondido Police Department. The first was because I was leaving at the Escondido Transit Center and I was approached by an officer in a squad car who got out and immediately told me to sit down on the curb. There was no the reason for this he just simply got out of his squad car and started speaking in an authoritative tone. Apparently what I was doing wrong was I was riding a bicycle on the sidewalk, like a good many people do who don't want get hit by traffic. He started to run my record for d that I don't have one like they all do. I said that there's actual crime going on somewhere and he asked me where it was, I said that was his job and not mine and that he was bothering me on a bicycle when it was actually taking place elsewhere, then he said that he didn't know if I was carrying a knife or a gun on me. At which point I replied call your co-workers and let's get this over with because if you can say that you can say or do anything.    One day I was riding my bicycle on the street from the laundromat. An SUV told me to get off the bike and sit down through the intercom. I sit down on the curb and a female officer approached me and a male officer approached me. When I go to reach for my cell phone I get put in handcuffs. Their SUVs are positioned in such a manner that the dash cam cannot view what's happening. I was told that I fit the description of someone who had taken a cell phone out of a store on Grand. This is the second time I've written a complaint about Escondido PD and I explained to them that I'm a veteran and that I can recognize the enemy in a war zone that they should be able to recognize the enemy in the city where they live and that we are not their enemy. Getting to the documents below, I was riding a bicycle South on Escondido Boulevard, and I went to make a left hand turn onto Sunset Cliffs where I work. The officer pulled up on me in the SUV saying that I was riding against traffic with no light. I did not have a light but I was not riding against traffic which I later told them and I pointed out that his - cam would have seen all the evidence but somehow all of that got bypassed. Because the officer wrote a ticket I was able to fight it and take it all the way to court, usually when the cops harass you they don't leave a paper trail this was a rookie mistake. When the commissioner said that this would be a male in decision and about a month later I basically got a bill and a notice of being guilty.   In short we're going to protect officer and we're going to charge you for it, no fairness or a Level Playing Field for you.
