The Short: Eric and his wife Lisa are just down to earth great people that did an excellent job! There crew was professional and we could not be happier with our new 1,800+ square foot deck! If I could give 10 stars I would! The not so short: My wife and I bought a home a few years back that had a deck about a 1,000 Sq ft off the back of our house which is built right at the edge of a steep hillside. We new the deck was going to have to be replace relatively soon. When it came time for us to start getting bids on it I called several contractors. Almost all of them did not want to do the work because of the technical difficulties of it being on a steep hillside. Most recommend us getting an engineer/architect to draw up the plans first so they could even attempt to give us a price. So I did a lot of research and found someone to do that. Then after much more research and talking to friends and searching the web I came across Superior Decks. From the moment I met Eric I could tell he was the guy to use. He came out looked at the sight and was confident right from the start he could build us a deck we would love. We wanted to use Ipe decking and so we discussed thoroughly with him his thoughts on the product. This stuff is not cheap and I wanted to make sure he was familiar with this stuff and how to work with it. He has lots of experience with this exotic hard wood and was even able to show us a job he had done with it. Once we got the old deck out of the way Eric and his crew got right to work. We had 21 massive piers and 2 huge grade beams sunk into our hill which took the crew about 6 weeks working every day with jack hammers to get through the bed rock deep enough for what the plans called for. After that they started framing which probably took another month or so and finally they worked on installing the deck boards themselves. It took about 4 months or so from start to finish to build this Gorgeous 1800+ sq foot deck. Through out the entire process Eric was here on site as much as possible working with his guys. His crew got here on time and worked solid all day. Eric had a few suggestions along the way that he made which we are grateful for. Eric has a real eye and talent for building decks and I truly believe we got the best deck possibly made. Having small children we were worried about one of our kids going out our back door and falling down the hill or getting into some other troubles while the project was going on but Eric made sure the site was as safe as possible. He secured the back door shut while it was going on, and put up a barrier to keep anyone out of the site that shouldn't have been in there. I recently selected Superior Decks to refinish my two balconies at my townhouse and I'm so thrilled with how they came out! It's really too bad that I didn't take "before" pictures to show the transformation. Lisa was great to work with and was able to fit me into the schedule faster than expected. The two workers were exceptional as well. The time they took to prep everything is why it looks so nice in the end. Everything was throughly power washed and then sanded before the stain/sealer went down. My decks are high up and they did everything from outside with ladders too so as not to go across my carpet (that was their idea-I was fine with them coming through the house if they put plastic down). Eric and Lisa recently refinished our deck in Montclair. They did a fantastic job refinishing and performed a number of repairs where boards or railings were rotting. It was great to have one company take care of both of these tasks (usually these companies perform one or the other; not both). We also had a support beam with a sinking foundation. Another company told us our only option was to replace the entire deck for $50K. Instead, Eric came up with a creative way to adjust the foundation and replace the existing support beam for ~$400. Overall, they offered a great set of services for reasonable cost and they were super easy to work with in terms of scheduling. Highly recommend them! read more

We had a 1,000-square-foot redwood deck that was in need of some loving care after 6 years in the sun and rain. I called Superior, based on their excellent reviews, and Lisa came out the first day to take a look. She carefully measured and inspected the deck and gave me a fair estimate. But then, I spent a month trying to get the original builder to check out the deck's condition, as well as have a few other contractors give me estimates. But no one matched Lisa's price, expertise and friendly demeanor. Finally, worried about the deck deteriorating further, I called Lisa Rumpf and had her put our deck on their schedule. They were a bit delayed in starting the job, but Lisa kept in regular touch to keep us posted. We used Superior Decks to build a IPE deck for us off of our second floor living room. We were very happy we with the experience from beginning to end. They were professional and skilled. We had an amazing deck restoration project done. We had got a couple of other bids but we chose to go with them because they had good reviews and came with years of experience. We chose to have our deck done in a semi transparent color which allowed the natural grain of the wood to show through. We were absolutely blown away with the efficiency of the workers and please see the pictures. Eric and Lisa are as good as builders/contractors get. Period. We hired Superior Decks to rebuild and expand a 850 sq ft IPE deck. This was a complex project. We live on a crest with a steep grade in back, over which the deck was built. It required five 18" concrete piers to be drilled 25 feet down, a door removal, a roofline retraction, customized powder-coated iron posts, repairing water damage on the house itself, and building to another company's set of drawings. I honestly can't say enough about how professional their crew was. 8am sharp every day. They worked quickly, consistently, and efficiently. Moreover, their work was exacting and meticulous. Sight lines ran evenly down ~60+ ft of decking. Eric is a master with IPE. He brings a unique "artisan" mentality to his work, and takes so much pride in it, it often felt like he was building his own deck. I'd agree with other reviews that his work is not the cheapest, but it's the best VALUE by far. We have a relatively small house, so the deck / view is the most prominent feature and deserved a high level of investment. We had several other bids to build, but knew that Eric would deliver as soon he gave us a tour of another deck he had built. It's been a year or so since the deck was completed (right on budget), and we are just as thrilled with it as the day after it was finished. We were so impressed with Eric and his crew, we recently brought them back to build a ~60 ft IPE fence. Again, they hit it out of the park. Lisa's professionalism was a fitting complement to Eric's expert buildling skill. The invoices were timely and our interactions were all clear and courteous. I have no idea why one guy gave them only 1 star. He absolutely had to have the wrong company's name! From my experience today, coming out after getting my call yesterday, there is no way that man's experience could have been with Superior Decks. Yelp needs to look into that. Lisa came out today to give an estimate to repair/refinish my large deck and spent nearly 2 hours photographing, measuring, and going over options with me: repair/refinish, replace entirely, or just tear the thing down (and do a landscape option with smaller patio/landscaping.) That last would not have benefitted their DECK company.....but she still threw it out there as something I might want to consider. Lisa REALLY cared about giving me excellent advice, estimates, and options. She was genuine, very easy and pleasant to work with, and incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. She even arranged for Eric to come later TODAY to give me an estimate on a complete deck tear-down and re-build, which he did. All this and no contract had yet to be signed! You do not find this kind of service and customer-comes-first attitude hardly anywhere anymore. This is an extremely professional company and I highly recommended them. read more

I had a few vendors discuss this project with me before deciding on Superior. One vendor pushed me in the direction of a total rebuild. One vendor wanted to just do the easy floor refinish. Our deck was in need of some TLC which included some repairs and restoration. As a result of Eric's building experience, he came up with several practical ideas for repairing our deck with excellent results. Water logged edge boards were trimmed and replaced with a perpendicular board running along the edge giving it a custom look. This was just one example. On the project management side, Lisa was the greatest. She kept us apprised throughout the project, checking in and providing updates of upcoming stages. Our project took a little longer and primarily due to our indecision regarding the choice of stain. She bent over backwards to accommodate us and genuinely wanted to ensure that we would be happy with the result - coming out several times with color charts and types of stains to discuss various options. She was extremely patient and even made several trips to the paint store to tweak the color palette. In order to meet deadline, she even came out on a weekend with her worker to apply sample stains. I called them and they jumped through hoops to make my dream a reality.
