This is the second time having my deck done by this company. Fist time was perfect, I was happy and had no complaints. So this time, I went right back without comparing them to other bids; that was a dumb mistake. The quoted price was 30% more (well outpacing inflation...but I know construction costs in the bay area have been doing that). Did I overpay? I'll never know for sure. My bad for that one. The communication could have been better. This time just like last, Al came out and did the estimate and told me what work would be done. That was practically the last time I saw him. A different guy showed up on the scheduled day and started moving furniture. Some of it is heavy and he was dragging it. I didn't want any wood damage or lawn damage so I helped him. It was just him and me, moving all the furniture. Luckily I didn't have physical issues preventing that, but if you do...you might want to make other arrangements. I'm sure Al could have sent a second helper if I had asked. Second, their worker was nice enough and very diligent, but there was a severe language barrier. We only understood a few words from each other, and misunderstandings were common. That prevented us from clarifying several things like the furniture moving, timing of the second coat, and most importantly, color choice. He seemed to not have any info from Al about the job, and didn't know what color to apply. I told him to keep the same color, but he suggested a different one than we used last time. So now our deck is a darker shade than I wanted. He also said clear coat would be better; but couldn't tell me why and only suggested it after alerady starting on the...inferior...semi-transparent color he chose for me! We had them perform a full deck restoration, including replacing some planks and supports, sanding the entire deck back to bare wood, including all flat horizontal surfaces as well as the top of the rails, and adding two coats of stain. Everyone on Al's team was polite, knowledgeable, and did their work carefully. My deck needed to have some boards replaced, and Al sent a carpenter who expertly fit in new board sections while maintaining the still-good sections of each board. Then Al's team sanded and washed the deck in preparation for staining. Here's where things went a bit sideways, because of me. I know I can be a PIA, and I found it difficult to finalize the stain I wanted. Al was VERY patient with me while providing 5 different samples. We hired All Pro Deck to renew the badly-weathered 500-sqft redwood deck at the house we recently bought. They sanded the deck, washed it (including getting the crud out from between the boards), applied a brightener, and finally stained it. Al, the owner/foreman, came out promptly to give us an estimate for sanding, cleaning, brightening, and staining our deck. We had several other companies give us estimates before choosing All Pro. They had the lowest bid, and also seemed like a professional operation that actually specializes in deck maintenance/repair. I would recommend All Pro Deck. We have a 756 Sq Ft. clear redwood deck at our WC home. It had been painted over the years and we had peeling. Al's crew of two (Jose & Jorge) sanded it carefully down to bare wood. The crew was polite and worked very hard. Then after cleaning it, sealed it with semi-transparent stain, two coats. A few boards had to be replaced and the crew graciously picked up the lumber at Dolan's in Concord before work. We were in communication with Al almost daily. He replied to our emails and phone calls timely. The negatives: The crew had to leave our job to work on another which was unexpected. The cost was steep :$4300. The work was great for my 700sf 2 tier redwood deck and fencing. They sanded all surfaces and made sure all nails were fully in the wood. They cleaned the surfaces and applied a natural color preservative. This 33 year old deck looks almost new. They did not charge as much as I expected for the deck or the fence. We had a great experience with Al and his team. A challenging project -- three different kinds of wood, an existing finish that was failing in a truly ugly way... Al recommended a power wash, which helped... but did not push us to do a total refinish (no upselling at all). We decided not to wait another year and do the complete refinish work this summer. His team was friendly, professional, hard working... and they needed to be hard working because taking off the old finish was quite a lot harder than anticipated.
