During the estimate Samuel offered suggestions on how to better secure the new porch and the materials that he was going to use. Samuel explained that the tear down and rebuild would take 2 days. I must add that that was the exact timeline. Samuel does need to comeback to sand and stain the wood. Due to the upcoming rains we postponed the staining. I highly recommend Samuel at Deck Savers.

He is thoughtful, intelligent and genuinely a nice guy, qualities that are all too rare in contractors these days. He has gone above and beyond. The quoted price was 30% more (well outpacing inflation...but I know construction costs in the bay area have been doing that). Did I overpay? I'll never know for sure. My bad for that one. The communication could have been better. This time just like last, Al came out and did the estimate and told me what work would be done. That was practically the last time I saw him. A different guy showed up on the scheduled day and started moving furniture. Some of it is heavy and he was dragging it. I didn't want any wood damage or lawn damage so I helped him. It was just him and me, moving all the furniture. Luckily I didn't have physical issues preventing that, but if you do...you might want to make other arrangements. I'm sure Al could have sent a second helper if I had asked. Second, their worker was nice enough and very diligent, but there was a severe language barrier. We only understood a few words from each other, and misunderstandings were common. That prevented us from clarifying several things like the furniture moving, timing of the second coat, and most importantly, color choice. He seemed to not have any info from Al about the job, and didn't know what color to apply. I told him to keep the same color, but he suggested a different one than we used last time. So now our deck is a darker shade than I wanted. He also said clear coat would be better; but couldn't tell me why and only suggested it after alerady starting on the...inferior...semi-transparent color he chose for me! I originally reached out because I needed repairs to my composite stairs and railing, which was oddly bent out of shape. Of all the contractors that came out, Jarrad of Sliwinski Decks really stood out. Jarrad came out for a detailed estimate and spent nearly an hour inspecting everything, explaining what he was seeing, and walking me through the possible causes, going over material recommendations and took my budget into account. What I thought to be wear and tear, Jarrad's sharp eye discovered the damage to my staircase was caused by an adjacent sidewalk that had buckled and was pushing into the railing, which caused the entire staircase structure to fail. Jarrad was honest, upfront, and super easy to work with. He walked me through the process, worked with my timeline, and gave clear recommendations on what needed to be done -- especially helpful since I have an HOA to deal. He also set the expectation in advance that more damage could be hiding underneath but wouldn't know until the stairs were demolished. I was appreciative of that, full transparency, no upselling - just having realistic expectations. The project was completed by Mike who handled everything by himself, and he was fantastic. Even though the project was relatively small, he treated it with the same care and professionalism you'd expect on a big job. He's extremely detail‑oriented, very knowledgeable, and also trained as arborist -- which came in handy given the root issues. He seemed eager for the work and I felt really good about him and his capabilitiies. I let him know I wasn't in a rush as I had some planned travel but would like to get something locked in in a few weeks with goal of having them do the work after my return. I received a bid from him on February 6th with a suggestion that I contact him with any questions. The next day I emailed him with a few qeustions, specifically asking about some items we'd discussed that weren't in his proposal. I left a few voicemails between then and February 18th. On February 19th, I emailed him again asking for clarification on one of the items we'd discussed and asking for a more detailed bid for some additional work (more work for him). I returned from being out of the country for 2 weeks and still no response to either voicemails or emails. This week, 3.11 I left another voicemail asking him to please respond and suggesting that if he's no longer interested in the work that he please let me know so I can make alternative arrangements. Yesterday 3.13 I send a follow up email. Still nothing. I get that many contractors while very good at what they do, may not be as good at managing the "business" side of things but honestly this is ridiculous. I am left to assume he's not interested in either my project or preserving a good reputation. Very disappointing!!
