However, my experience with Contra Costa Decks was deeply disappointing, marked by a lack of professionalism, knowledge, and ethics. From the start, the owner was never available to address issues directly and visited the site only once before construction began, leaving accountability out of reach. Despite my attempts to resolve the issues through him, he disputes all claims, although he was never present to see the project's progression. The project manager had no construction experience, having previously worked as a home health aide, and it showed. His lack of expertise was glaring, and it was uncomfortable when he continually made personal comments about his dating preferences. The two laborers on-site, though very nice, were in way over their heads with no proper guidance. They only spoke broken English, which created a communication barrier, especially since the project manager couldn't effectively communicate with them. This added to the delays, as they struggled through tasks without clear instructions. They managed to dig just five footings per day, often slacking off, and left the site a mess, despite knowing I had dogs. Although the deck didn't need to be dismantled, it required significant reinforcement and straightening because it was not square. Additional steps had to be added to clear the retaining wall, an oversight the contractor should have anticipated, as two steps were clearly insufficient. Their billing practices were equally concerning. They referred to Trex material as an "upgrade" but attempted to charge nearly $3.75 more per square foot than the price available at Home Depot. This padding of material and labor costs was unacceptable, while the actual work remained incomplete or substandard. Ultimately, I have two weeks of video footage documenting every issue, from negligence and poor workmanship to a lack of professionalism. I am filing a complaint with the California State Licensing Board and am sharing my experience to bring awareness, so others don't encounter the same issues. I strongly urge anyone considering Contra Costa Decks to proceed with extreme caution - or, better yet, to choose a contractor who values honesty, skill, and professionalism. . read more

I called Contra Costa Decks to get my aging redwood deck replaced. I really wanted a Timber Tech deck and they were able to accommodate me. They were truly professional from start to finish, and always let me know during the process what was next. I asked them to come out and do an estimate and Ian came out and took some measurements. After he took all of his measurements I received an email from Dan with the estimate, which I approved. They demoed the old deck and took all of it away to the dump. Thankfully they were able to use the base posts of the old deck as they were all pressure treated redwood and still in good shape. After that, they started the install which included adding more structural support for the new deck boards to attach to. That took a couple of days, roughly. After I purchased all of the materials from Ashby Lumber in Concord, CA and they were delivered, they started installing the boards, which took a few days. They then installed the railings that I wanted and even installed a gate for my dogs at the bottom of the stairs at my request. When they were all done, they took all trash that had accumulated in my yard to the dump. All of their employees were very professional and nice, but I would be remiss if I didn't mention two by name. Craig was the foreman for the crew and while not there ALL of the time (he had other projects to attend to), he was always professional and explained everything to me. He also always answered any questions that I might've had. Yasiel was one of their craftsmen and he was a ROCKSTAR! He was there ALONE over a weekend plugging away to see this project to completion. He was there alone for a lot of this project taking care of the minute details and the smaller work that needed to be done. So, shoutout to Craig and especially Yasiel for their dedication to this project. Overall, from the start of the demo to finished product, was about two weeks. They always let me know what was next and who would be at the house and when. I am VERY satisfied with the quality and value that I received and would highly recommend Contra Costa Decks for anyone needing a new deck installed on their property. Great job guys! After going over and refining the estimate multiple times, I felt very comfortable moving forward. We went over multiple different decking and railing options for our project. Top tier crew!!! I had 2 sets of exterior stairs done and a deck and they not only completed the work beautifully, but they did it well under the timeline and worked with my budget! Everything turned out way better than I expected and I am now planning to have them work on my siding!
