My bed was a bloody mess that covered all sheets and the pillows. I'm hesitant to post a picture because it's a bit gory. I'm honestly not sure how this can happen in a hotel room. I couldn't sleep in it.

A charming West Texas gem with vintage flair and genuine hospitality…read more I've driven along I-10 between El Paso and points east more times than I can count, but somehow, I'd never stopped at Hotel El Capitan in Van Horn--a fact that has repeatedly surprised my physician, who has raved about it for years. Now I understand why. Hotel El Capitan is part of a small group of historic hotels in Texas (think Hotel Paisano in Marfa), and it brings that same kind of cinematic charm and small-town elegance to Van Horn. While most of the lodging in the area consists of typical roadside chains, El Capitan stands out as a true destination--picturesque, warm, and full of character. The experience begins with a beautiful courtyard that feels like a hidden oasis. There's a fountain at the center and plenty of outdoor seating, where guests can enjoy food and drinks from the on-site restaurant. Inside, the lobby is cozy and inviting--exactly the kind of place you want to settle into after a long drive. Though Van Horn is only about 90 minutes from El Paso, I was glad I made the decision to spend the night. My room had a charming mid-century vibe, with furniture that looked lovingly preserved from the 1950s or '60s. The bed was incredibly comfortable, and to my delight, the room included a private outdoor patio with two chaise lounges and a table--perfect for a quiet moment under the West Texas sky. The restaurant, like the hotel itself, keeps things traditional but thoughtful. The menu leans Texas-style with clear Mexican influences, and the service was warm and attentive. I ordered the pistachio-crusted chicken with a glass of wine, and it was the ideal wind-down meal. The next morning's breakfast buffet hit all the right notes--classic continental offerings with a few Southwestern touches that made it feel more personal. While I may not have frequent reasons to stay overnight in Van Horn, I'm really glad I took the detour this time. Hotel El Capitan is a little slice of West Texas history and hospitality, and it absolutely deserves its reputation as a must-see stop on the road.

It was my husband's birthday on 6/09 and I wanted nothing more for on his birthday than for him to be able to visit Carlsbad Caverns and take him to Trinity for his birthday dinner. (My sister and I had visited Carlsbad in 2009/2010 and our meals (steak dinners) were absolutely 5-star with service to match.) I noticed that the restaurant had changed owners, though, in 2012, according to what I had read. The food, his pork chop, and my filet mignon dinners were so very mediocre. The loaded potato was disgusting looking in appearance and I just swiped my fork over a gruesome amount of cheese and bacon bits plopped on top of it. The filet mignon and pork chop were so uneventful. Vegetables were mediocre. We didn't even order an appetizer nor alcoholic beverages, but we wanted to give the server about a 22% tip because she was so nice and attentive, and our bill came to $90 + change. We would've and have had much better meals at Chili's!!! (The wooden 'school-like' chairs were not too comfortable, to boot.) So sad to see how drastically this place had changed....major disappointment (especially on one's birthday).

The Best Western Plus Swiss Chalet Hotel & Suites in Pecos, TX has to be the best in town!…read more I decided it was time for a girl's trip that comprised of me, my mom, and my two young daughters. My mom enjoyed museum hopping and site seeing with us. She also got a really good night's rest here. As we left she referred to it as "a neat place." My daughters absolutely loved the pool and hot tub here - we had it to ourselves the night of 1/13/2024 and the following morning. They also raved about the hot breakfast with a cute little Texas-shaped waffle and a variety of boba pearls, including blueberry flavor. Yes, I said boba! We stayed in Suite #203. It was nice and clean with two double beds and a sleeper sofa plus two flatscreens and ample outlets. After taxes and fees, my rate was $160.99 The only pitfalls for me was the interstate noise which wasn't too bad, but I could also easily hear kids running up and down the hallway a few times. Additionally, we had to use towels from our room for the pool. At one point I had to go downstairs to ask for a blanket that I thought should have been supplied in the room as part of the sleeper sofa. Nice, friendly staff. I'd definitely recommend for families.

One other thing I really liked was the smart TV that allowed you to log into your own Hulu, Netflix, etc. I don't see that often at hotels and was happy to spend the night in, catching up on my shows! Only complaint about this place is that they did not seem to take COVID seriously as the woman at the front desk did not have a mask, nor seem to require one of those she was chatting with in the small office.

The room was typical motel, but it was a good size, comfortable and clean. Had no problem with the beds. Free WiFi, cable, typical free coffee packs, shampoo etc. I don't know why some visitors didn't receive the shampoo/soap. We had them. Best of all was the remodeled swimming pool area complete with water slides. Swimming pool was large. This was by far the best swimming pool area of all the hotels we stayed on during our road trip. The kids loved it. Unfortunately, we arrived at the hotel a little late and were only able to take advantage of it for an hour. There were two big negatives. Check in was really slow because their computer system was down. Because of that, the guy tried to charge us normal prices. Fortunately, we had previously printed out all of our reservation information and were able to retain our previous internet price ($80). Second big negative was the included free breakfast. Literally, they provided us with hostess cupcakes and ding dongs for breakfast! Gross. At least they had orange juice, coffee and milk.

Staff was friendly and accommodating, breakfast was hot and fresh, coffee was hot and good. My only issue was the AC. There is a thermostat on the wall and you would think this controlled the AC, well, it does not! We didn't sleep very good because it would cool down then get very hot, we adjusted what we thought was the thermostat to the lowest setting and fan to on, but this did not work, finally at 3 am and sweating in bed I got up and looked at the unit under the window which is usually controlled by the thermostat on the wall. It was set to 74°. I adjusted it to 70° with constant fan, THIS finally fixed the issue, unfortunately I had to get up in 4 hours to leave. So if you're going to stay at this establishment, DO NOT USE THE THERMOSTAT ON THE WALL!

And speaking of that, when we arrived I had thought I would need to go out for dinner and I was amazed that they provided that. It was nothing special -- salisbury steak, corn, and mashed potatoes -- but given that I really didn't want to go out after a long drive it was very welcome. However, the hotel breakfast was just OK so I went to the nearby McDonalds instead. This place kept surprising me on the upside. Everything was just a bit better than I expected for the price.
