Art and his team at Superior Paving Systems came through when another contractor abandoned my project right in the middle. Unlike many contractors, this team shows up on time and delivers high quality work on schedule. They do spend the time to do things right. I initially asked them to finish some pavers, sand and sealing and to seal a concrete patio and driveway. They did a great job so I hired them again to replace the turf in the front and backyard. It was generally installed improperly, had a few issues with weeds and leaks. But the aforementioned previous contractor made it five times worse. Again, showing up is half the battle and these guys brought the right people and tools to get things done efficiently and correctly. After reading through the positive reviews I was disappointed with my experience. The job was to level our 100 year old concrete porch and then add porcelain tile. It was enclosed with a short brick wall that was also to be demolished. All started out nice with clear communication and even getting to the job early. However, finishing was lacking. The grout was missing in multiple pockets and the spacing in some places went from 1/8" which was planned to nearly 1/2". The step was not lined up with our pavers (laterally offset). The corner of our patio had dipped a bit so this was raised an appropriately leveled. However the pavers in the area were not corrected, which left one end of the step 6 inches and the other 7 3/4" - granted the correction of the pavers was not part of the contract, which led to an additional charge to get it done. It took them a few times of coming back out until the grout appeared satisfactory. They willing corrected the offset. All in all it required me asking them to come back out at least 5 times after the job was "completed." Less than a year later some of the grout is already breaking away in a few places and one tile has separated. There is also a tile that didn't set properly and now I get a hollow sound every time I step on it. They also got grout on my paver walkway and didn't clean it. . . Plus they charged more to repair the stucco that was behind a small brick wall that they demolished (again the repair was not specifically part of the contract). Within 6 months the stucco had cracked. In the end I have a porch that looks pretty good and is nicer than it used to be. Worth the cost? No. Worth the stress and constant negotiation / asking them to come back out? Definitely not. read more

This is the follow-up email I received after they came back to inspect: "Our policy is printed on our work orders and invoices, which are given to you both before and after our service. These documents clearly state that there is no guarantee we will be able to remove all stains, and that each job is treated independently. It also mentions that we do not offer refunds for any services we provide." Be aware of this policy before deciding to hire them! NO GUARANTEE AND NO REFUND!!! I wasted both time (had to call and have them come back twice) and money for a job poorly done. If you have a power washer and one hour of time, you can do a better job and save money. read more

Update to my previous review of Superior Paving Systems, Art assessed the cause for my pavers being covered in scum and found it was not the sealer but the sand. He completely cleaned my driveway and walkways allowing the stones to thoroughly dry. Then applied the sand. He advised that sealer not be applied at this time since the stones still have sealer on them. He said in a year we can reevaluate the stones and decide if they need sealer. We worked with Art on getting our back yard project done. Our back yard was all concrete and we wanted to put in artifical turf. We got multiple quotes and ultimately decided to go with Art for a few reasons. The main points were that Art got us a formal quote within 12 hours of coming out and taking the measurements. It was very fast communication and we appreciated that. His quote was also very good. He offered us a 10% discount for scheduling with them when they had another project in the same area. The project was planned to start on June 8th, however Art ended up calling us and telling us that they were ahead of schedule on their other project and they would start it June 1st and would be done by June 5th. We were very excited about this. The main reason why I'm giving them 3 stars instead of 5 stars is because of a complication we had during the process. Originally we had planned to pour a 2 1/2 foot walkway. This would have made the width 18 feet wide. We noticed that they had the mold made for 4 feet. When we asked about this Art told us to avoid a seam they were planning on doing a 4 foot walk way. We were slightly confused because there was already a 4 foot walk way that they had demolished, only to put in a new 4 foot walkway. Both my husband and I were in an online meeting during this time, so we just said "ok". That night we went out side to look at the progress and I noticed that they had the outline for the yard one foot in from the border. Right away we talked with Art who then explained that the turf was 15 feet wide. Thus why they put in the 4 foot walkway and then moved the border in by one foot, this making the width 15 feet not 18 feet. Overall this meant we "lost" about 150 square feet of turf. We originally were quoted for 850 square feet and this would make it 700 square feet. We "compromised" by having them put a little more turf in another area which made up round 50 square feet. So we were still about 100 square feet short of what we planned on getting. On the last day we got the final payment bill and I noted that it was the original quote. I emailed Art asking about if we could get a discount since we were quoted a certain amount, and got 100 square feet less. We talked about it and he offered us a 5% discount. Overall we just took it because we didn't want to make a big deal about it. The thing that rubbed us the wrong way was that he came out and measured and knew it was 18 feet wide, but bought a 15 foot wide roll. And just planned on making it 15 feet wide the entire time. Two days later we were looking at the grass and my husband realized that they laid out the lawn the opposite director of what we talked about. We had planned to lay it a certain way because it looked "fuller" when you looked at it from the house. Not much to do here though since they can't just come and move it 180 degrees. Overall we have enjoyed our back yard this past week and our kids love the grass vs the concrete. It's just smaller then we thought. I would recommend them, however I would just encourage you to double check on the measurements to make sure you get the square footage you want. I cannot say enough good things about working with Art and Superior Paving Systems. I initially contacted Art to get an estimate on redoing our front yard. Our review is overdue but not forgotten by far! My husband and I had finished our kitchen remodel and knew we wanted to look out into a beautiful redesigned backyard where we could entertain, play and just relax. We started our research by looking into hardscape ideas/materials. This is when our luck changed amid the confusion with the many options to pick from- we met Art Rodrigues! He was so professional and kind in answering all of our questions and concerns from the initial meeting and continued after the project was completed. Art took a lot of time working with us to create a design. He listened to what we wanted. Art personally took us to look at current as well as completed projects, and met with us to pick out building materials and plants. I have been an understanding and patient neighbor with the more than 6 months delinquent construction going on next door. Several episodes of empty pallets and garbage sitting in the public street and driveway for weeks, noisy construction early in the mornings, etc. This morning( Saturday) the workers started at 7am with loud noises of a leaf blower used to blow dry a recently constructed wooden pergola still wet from the continuous rain (prepping to stain) and a noisy air compressor. All this noise was very unnecessary so early in the morning and abruptly woke us all. I yelled over the fence to get the workers attention and told him to stop. The worker argued with me and told me he can be there working. I said no you can't. I put my shoes and jacket on and went to talk to Art. I asked Art for his business card and he refused to provide. (Subsequently, we found the name of the construction company on a workers t-shirt). I explained to Art this early work and noise was unacceptable. He told me this is San Jose and they can start working. I corrected him and said no this is Campbell. He wanted to argue with me about where I live. He was very rude and tried to bully me. He told me to leave the property and attempted to shut the gate on me. I told him I had the homeowners permission to be there. As I continued to tell him he wasn't allowed to be working at this time, he did a hand gesture as if to indicate I was blabbing on and did his best to dismiss me. He was very disrespectful. I had the Campbell Police come and explain to Art that this was indeed Campbell and the correct start time on a Saturday is 9am. A professional and knowledgeable contractor, especially one with their business located in Campbell, should be aware of what city he is working in, the appropriate city ordinances and to be courteous to the surrounding neighbors. We spoke with a worker later and he had the decency to apologize to us and he said he understood why I was upset. He said he had no idea that the ordinance called out a 9am start time. I told him I understood that he was the employee but his boss, Art, should have been more responsible and considerate than to put his employees, the clients and the neighbors in this negative situation and his boss, Art, should have been professional and put his pride to the side and listened to me instead of dismissing me. Unfortunately, you failed to enforce your own company policy - to follow the appropriate city's ordinances. The city of San Jose does not accept applications nor issue building permits , instructions, dispatch inspectors or otherwise for properties with a Campbell address. More importantly, there is no permit on record (active or closed) with San Jose for the work your company completed at the site. This would explain some of the building projects that don't meet code requirements. For example, the pergola your company built is within 5 feet of the property line, just to name one of your projects. And for honesty sake, you didn't leave the property out of respect for me nor the neighbors, you left when the Campbell police department arrived to enforce the ordinances you were violating. read more

There is roughly 50 paving companies serving Santa Clara County when you search for the keyword "pavers". Try the word "landscaper" and you'll get thrown 100 more on top of that same list. So then how do you determine which landscaper truly provides the unmatched combination of service, quality, and price in such a highly saturated and competitive market? Well, you order the list by some permutation (I apologize for the mathematical jargon - I'm an engineer at heart) of star rating, number of reviews, and maybe whether or not the picture icon resembles the service you're trying to obtain. It obviously wouldn't make sense to click on a landscaping business if the picture is of some woman breast feeding a baby (yes, this really did happen and I clicked it). We'll after doing all of this, Art's business popped up at the top, right? Wrong! With 5 reviews and an average rating of 3.5, I don't think I even remember his listing showing up at all. Instead, I called all the top 4-5 rating landscapers in my neighborhood. At least a dozen. Half of them called back. The other half never responded. Of the ones that did call back, I was able to setup several appointments. Some were no-shows, others, kind, yet inattentive, and a few that were just plain out rude. One guy who I won't dare to mention, came to my front door, asked me if others were bidding on the project. I said "yes, i'm trying to just get 2-3 bids". The guy immediately said, "not interested! thanks anyways!", turned around and left. Wow, really!? After an exhaustive search and for good reason (I wasn't going to settle for just anyone on a $30-50K estimated project), I almost gave up and decided to defer the project completely for another year because I couldn't find anyone reputable and with reasonable prices. I attempted a Yelp search one last time and somehow Art's listing caught my attention. Not sure if it was the photos or the fact that he had a mix of stellar and not so stellar reviews, but for whatever astrological reason, I decided to give him a call. Chapter 1: Customer Service After the first ring, Art picked up: professional, courteous, and well-spoken. We setup an appointment and Art arrived in a timely manner. He came dressed, notebook in hand, and armed with a script of questions that made us feel comfortable that this guy was by no means, new to the business. Art spent more than an hour and never looked at his clock once. He took our engagement seriously and that definitely stood out as his strong suit. In a service business that typically awards 10% of all quotes handed out, one can easily forget the virtue of good customer service. Art treated us like a long-time customer. On this premise alone, we decided to award him the contract days later despite two other competitive bids. Chapter 2: Quality and Price Don't get me wrong, he was still much more affordable (by almost $10K) than the other landscapers, but for a job as significant as we were attempting, our priority was ensuring we had professional and seasoned folks working on our house. Price was second. Art demonstrated from the initial phone call, the meetups and throughout the followup engagements that he was a master of his craft. I'm by no means an expert of landscaping to fully assess his knowledge, but I'm a seasoned pro at calling out bullsh*t. Art's team started the 2 month project on schedule and completed within the proposed timeline. Our house was a complete chaotic mess for weeks, but when the job was complete, an amazing showcase: Completely re-cemented garage, front and back soft and hard landscape, S-curves, unique patterns and shapes, and a variety of subtle house cosmetics (I'll try to post pictures or just have Art take you by our house). Chapter 3: Reliability and Care As we all know, nothing ever goes as planned. I have to admit. We did have minor mishaps here and there during and post-completion. Broken pavers, dead plants, crooked lines, incorrectly ordered hardware, poor design interpretations, rising and sinking pavers, etc. But what is more important than getting it right the first time, is ensuring that when things are not as intended, that they get fixed. Art was committed, and passionate about ensuring that we had the best experience, not just from beginning to end, but from beginning to always. Art resolved all of our concerns willfully and happily regardless of the cost to him. He never questioned our questions. To this day, Art is just as attentive, responsive, and caring to our needs as much as he was 5 months ago looking to land the contract. Reliability is an understatement. I'm not at all surprised Art continues his father's business of 40 years. Now if Art only figured out how to transcend his business into 21st century marketing and use the Internet, he'd find himself at the top of everyone's search results. Our family has been working with Art the owner of Superior Paving for the last month on the exterior landscaping and paving of our house. Art is a honest trustworthy person who knows his business. This is probably the best experience we've had with any contractor that has performed work at our house. We were pretty nervous about the scale of the job as we were replacing/expanding our driveway/walkway/porch (over 700 total sq. ft.). After four estimates (Mr. Pavers, Black Diamond, etc.), we decided to go with Superior Paving mainly due to the trust we had in the team and their competitive pricing. When working on any job of this scale, the most important criteria we look for is a good project manager. From the moment we met Art at our consultation, he impressed us with his professional yet personable demeanor. We needed a contractor who we could really trust to guide us through the entire process. As overwhelming as it all seemed, we knew that Art would make it an enjoyable process and deliver a final product that we would feel proud of at the end. He is extremely knowledgeable about pavers and design and spent over two hours with us answering our questions and discussing design elements of the project. He didn't come in trying to sell us something that we didn't want. We ended up taking on a little larger project than expected but we never felt pressured to do more than we could afford. When it came to cost, he listened to what we needed and what we were comfortable on spending and worked with us. Our experience with Superior Pavers, including the owner Art, has been extremely time consuming and frustrating. You might wonder how his online rating is so high... well, halfway through our project when things started going sour and we were expressing discontent, Art told us they would not complete further work unless we signed a nondislosure preventing us from giving him an online review. This is extremely unethical. We discussed with legal representation and didn't sign it, but I'm sure a lot of other customers have felt pressured to sign the waiver or be left with an unfinished project. Here's a short version of our experience: At first, Art seemed knowledgeable, he made us feel comfortable, like a priority, and he even promised to help us out with a few smaller projects we had going on for no extra charge (or at least that's the impression he gave us), which is why we ended up choosing him over cheaper options. Very quickly after starting the job this changed and clarity on when things would be completed went out the window. Some weeks they would be here, some weeks they wouldn't. And, when it came time to "helpIng us out" with the extra items we discussed when we signed the deal, Art came back with very high price tags and more than doubled our initial quoted price. And, many times he would say we never even discussed/agreed to them. While the pavers part of the project turned out well in the end, most of the projects including the pavers, concrete work, and other items had to be redone due to lack of communication between Art and his team on things Art discussed with us (dimensions, placements, etc...) , or poor quality work such as non-square framing, landings not centered on doors, etc... This ended up causing the project to drag on for months. And, we needed to do all of the quality control, Art was barely on site to check the work his team was doing, even though this was an initial commitment that he made up front. We would not recommend Superior Pavers. We had a very bad experience and hope others do not get put into the position we were put in. read more

I'm really happy that we chose Superior Paving Systems to create our new driveway, walkways, and patios. Art R. was great to work with. He helped us get the pavers and design that we wanted within our planned budget. Our project was completed earlier than promised. He took our rough plans for our front and back yards and made wonderful design suggestions that resulted in a better overall plan. We just did a driveway replacement with pavers, Art fit in the work between their big projects while waiting for materials. The team of 5+ plus people finished the work in 3 days with great quality! Really happy with that! Two minor things also worth mention, first, they put yellow tape after to block people drive on it while waiting for the thing's ready, second, sprinkler system got broken coincidentally and Art got his sprinkler guy and followed up until everything is good. Art and his crew at Superior Paving Systems did an awesome job. They did a big project for us. We have a semi circle driveway that stretches across the front of the house and leads all the way to the back of the property. They installed pavers, added drainage and a built and installed a fence. We are so pleased with how it turned out. It completely changed the look of our house. The quality of work was excellent and the owner, Art, is very responsive. With the drought ending our front yard was in bad shape. We talked with a number of sub-contractors getting estimates for new pavers, new lawn with sprinklers, new landscaping and rebuilding of our porch. Each contractor only wanted to do their own specialty and it looked like it would take an enormous time and effort on my part to coordinate their efforts. After a couple weeks of this we went back to YELP to find a contractor to take care of the entire project and that's when we found Art Rodriguez and his company Superior Paving Systems. Best decision ever! I was a contractor for 30 years and to find a guy who cares so much about his customers, his employees, and the quality of his work is rare and delightful. Art was always on time for meetings and showed up to the job site every day to check the progress. The crew was professional and friendly keeping the chaos of construction to a minimum. The high level of cooperation and communication with me on the job site made it fun to see the front yard transform. For this crew the job was nothing but hard physical exertion from start to finish. There was never a complaint or a cross word among the men and there was actually some singing from time to time. You could tell that really liked working with each other. Having done a ton of due diligence before ever meeting Art I had an idea what this was going to cost. When I got the estimate it was so reasonable that I didn't even counter it. The whole job got done on time and on budget. We have received lots of compliments from neighbors and even people just driving by. We are so pleased with the results that we told Art to send any prospects over to see the new yard and even speak with us if they have any questions. read more
