Ten years ago, Bob and his crew worked on our front yard. It was always my plan to write a review a few years after the work to give consumers a better idea of the quality of Bob's work. I'm happy to say, we continue to be happy with the work he did back then. To this day, I recall how the crew was courteous and on time. Each day the crew cleaned up after their workday. Bob even came twice afterwards to reset a timer and replant one plant. The quality of his materials has held up to the test of time. I can see how other yards have weatherized and changed whereas our materials have fared better. His choice of lighting was excellent and well placed.. We had a separate landscape designer who chose some plants that couldn't survive with the wildlife appetites in our area, but that was not part of Bob's responsibility. He simply executed the plan, which he did well. In retrospect, I should have checked for his input in that area. I would definitely use his services again! read more

I selected Affordable Landscape after i opened the bid with 4 contractors. Bob's quote was right in the middle, but from the first time i spoke with him he provided genuinely good ideas and we felt he would execute on our vision. Mary works the office but she was always very clear and precise in the questions, helped clarify the quote and make sure it was exactly what they were going to work on. Loved the clarity of the communication. I am so glad we picked Bob and his team to do our backyard and we are super happy with the outcome. Bob was continuously engaged providing suggestions and helping us enhance our choices. The work took about 4 weeks to complete as promised (surprise! contract work on schedule wow). Along the way we made some changes and addition without impacting the schedule. His team is super organized, they plan what is to be done next day. They always showed up on time and execute. I wish my work day could be planned like this. They measured ( and remeasured) the layout, put down the strings and marked what goes where, asked when there was a change, marked it up so it was recorded. They cleaned up the site after the work. We did a raised paver patio, a gazebo, wall, concrete and steps work. The design was created by a designer but Bob and his team executed and made that a reality. Bob also helped with the gazebo lighting and selection. We made some changes in selection of la paz rocks vs crushed granite to improve the look and added concrete steps for walkable area. Overall super happy with his guidance. I also enjoyed having my daily conversations and updates with Bob, his dog buddy was a nice presence every time. Chris came out twice and repairs or replaced all the heads in our front and back gardens, got the automatic time working correctly, gave me good advice on repair/replacing items in the future. All my various irrigation repairs were done efficiently and with care. His attention to detail was superb and he explained things very well. Earlier this Summer we hired Bob Wong and Affordable Landscape & Design for a good size landscape conversion project, front and back, to replace grass with plants requiring less water, upgrade a patio, upgrade pavers, install LV lighting, and to take care of some drainage issues. It was a very satisfying experience throughout. Bob and his entire Team are true professionals - it's obvious by observing their work, they know what they are doing. Of course, for a large project like this you can't just close your eyes and hope everything will turn out as expected, so you need to actively communicate with the contractor during the project. Fortunately, Bob was very accommodating to some small adjustments along the way. It also helped to have had a professional landscape design to start with, which I did utilizing Jennifer and Living Landscape Design in advance, who had been recommended by Bob. We got our backyard redone in the fall of 2021. Bob and his team were super efficient during the entire project. We had both our front and backyard landscaping completely redone during our very large home renovation and couldn't have been happier with the results! The team (Alfredo, Alejandro, Robert, and Filipe) were all such skilled, hard workers! They arrived on time everyday with professional and positive attitudes and worked hard until the end of the day for 5 weeks straight! Bob also came by everyday to check on the job, making suggestions and adjustments along the way, and treated our project as if it were his own home. He is a true artist and made really tasteful suggestions to our initial design, like adding 2 seat walls, trees, modern looking stone walkway, and beautiful rocks to accent our landscaping! One of the best investments I've made was redoing our backyard and choosing Affordable Landscaping. I engaged when them on the original design. They had so many great and creative ideas, you can tell they have a ton of experience and passion for the work. They don't just cookie cutter any design, they look at the yard and ask how you'll use it, selected plants that fit your needs, etc. They really put thought into it. Once the design was done and we got a start date, they began right way. The team was there every day on time. The owner was there every day to check the work and kept the team to a high standard making sure everything was just right. We made some on the fly changes, they were very accommodating. We've called upon Affordable Landscape three times now, and each time the work has been excellent. We have a twenty-year-old lawn irrigation system. For many years, I repaired it myself, but these days I prefer to hire someone. The most recent repair involved replacing the solenoid on a valve. The wires to it had been cut accidentally when weed-whacking some vegetation that had grown over the valves. I wasn't even aware they had been cut until the back yard lawn started browning this spring in spite of the fact that I'd turned the irrigation system back on. Chris came out and quickly did the repair. While here, he noticed that some drip irrigators on some other lines were not working, and repaired those as well. During the summer, there is heavy demand for their services so sometimes you have to wait. During winter and spring, they are extremely prompt; I've been able to get appointments within a day or so. We started searching for a landscaper over a year ago. After reading many reviews, we decided on Affordable Landscaping after reading great reviews. We called and spoke to Mary a few times about an upcoming project. We liked the fact that there was a live person on the other end and always returned phone calls. We were ready to start our project Phase 1 which was to renovate our entire front walkway. We had researched and decided on Belgard Pavers with borders. We called for an appointment and we met with owner Bob Wong. He was extremely courteous, knowledgeable, and reviewed our design plans. He made some recommendations and revised our original design plan to enhance our needs. We interviewed 2 other paving companies along with Affordable Landscaping. For our project we selected Bob for the job because of his knowledge not just in the Pavers but also for future irrigation and drainage needs for our landscaping project. During the Paver construction the crew of 3 always showed up on time, cleaned up every evening including sweeping all the debris before departure. The crew along with Bob were always very professional, courteous and respectful. There are many positive key factors but one of them that stood out to us was the fact that Bob Wong only schedules one job at a time. He is able to monitor and focus on our project up to completion. We also decided to have upgraded lighting and we chose FX Luminaire lighting with a color transformer (Luxor ZDC) per recommendation from Bob. We had each step illuminated along with path lights for safety reasons. The original lawn had long past its prime, there was little shade, and the concrete patio was cracked, stained, and too small for outdoor living and entertaining. We contacted Bob to set up an appointment, and he got back to us very quickly. Bob came out to our house soon after and reviewed our plans for the garden, took photos and measurements, gathered our requirements and goals for the space, and made some great suggestions based on our intended budget. We were immediately at ease with Bob. He was very knowledgeable, friendly, came with a portfolio of his work, and suggested design details we might otherwise have overlooked... and regretted not including. Bob got back to us very quickly with a detailed estimate that broke down each element of work for labor and materials. We asked Bob to go ahead and add us to his schedule. Once again, Affordable Irrigation Repair comes to the rescue. I had them come in a few years ago to fix my system, so I gave them another call when I noticed what I thought was a bad head, leaking water. With the drought I did not want to waste any water. Mary scheduled the appointment immediately. she offered same day service which was too quick so I had an appointment scheduled for a few days later. Chris arrived right on time and quickly figured out the problem. He had extra time left on my service call and used it to checked the rest of the system. I highly recommend this company and crew. He was personable and obviously took pride in his work. His crew worked together as a team, various skilled workers would arrive on time every day and immediately get to work. I hired Affordable Landscape to diagnose and fix a drip irrigation problem on my property. I watched all of the work--mostly to educate myself. Chris was meticulous and thorough, as well as upbeat and friendly. And the cost was very reasonable. I can see why they have garnered so many 5s. If I could have given them a 10, I would have. I will clearly go back to them if I have any further irrigation problems. Drip irrigation is simply hard to diagnosis and labor intensive to fix. But I will also go to these people if i need any future landscape work. The landscaper who installed our work did a good job--the follow-up not so good. read more

While the initial work request didn't seem large, Bob still took the time to come over personally, walk through the yard and listen to all our new homeowner questions. After reading several great reviews for ALD, plus calling around and getting competing quotes, I was confident that Bob and Mary would be an excellent choice. We awaited a quote for our back and front yards and couldn't wait to get started! When we received the quote, we looked it over and had a few questions - mostly regarding the hardscaping materials and hauling/transportation which were not included in the quote. After a phone conversation with Mary, she helpfully explained that even though we had given them a drawing and a verbal explanation for what we wanted, it was not specific enough for them to quote. I understood, and asked Mary how I could get more specific. She said to just send photos of the materials themselves, so they knew what to quote. I said, sure, great, that sounds logical, I'll do it! So, the quote still sitting on our counter, my husband and I found the time (it took several days) to walk around the neighborhood and take photos of everything we wanted that others had used in their yards. Things like: Bricks, Concrete, Lava Rock, and colored mulch. Nothing extraordinary, just the normal landscaping materials that everyone uses. So, I sent them about a dozen photos with some explanation like, this is what we mean by Lava Rock. This is what we mean by Wall. Etc. etc. Then I expected a call back or an email back about a revised, more accurate quote with the added information. I opened up my email today and Oh. My. God. They do not want to work with us at all. Quoted exactly: "After reviewing the information that you have sent to clarify your project, we have come to the conclusion that the project is not a good fit for us. That, coupled with the fact that we are currently scheduling projects in the summer mean that we will not be giving you a new estimate for the project. We thank you for your understanding." I don't know what I did wrong. We tried our best.? We didn't ask for anything weird? Our yards are small, and mostly level, and we just were thinking of getting the average gravel/rock/trim/bushes combination that everyone else in our neighborhood has. The worst part is, we are trying to get on the schedule for spring. We have to get something done with our landscape. This is unacceptable to us. I had a check ready to deposit for them, but I guess I'll rip that up and start over. This may be the last time I use Yelp for recommendations, to be honest, I can't believe that spending weeks going through reviews and calling ends in this. Please be forewarned that ALD may not really want to do business with you. Perhaps they have an overloaded schedule already, and don't want to spend any time with clients. My best friend's father owned a local paver manufacturing company. He said the only person he would trust to do his yard is Bob Wong. I already had a design created for our backyard but wasn't happy with the communication, etc. from that company. I am so happy that I contacted Affordable Landscape. Bob took that design and made it better. He turned our dirt backyard into a resort. We absolutely love it!! I have never seen such amazing work ethic. The guys were ready to go at 7:30 AM M-F. The quality of workmanship is top notch. Little details were added that I never thought of (adding water spouts, underground electrical and water drain at jacuzzi, moving our side gate/fence, stepping stones and much more) . Our job even included a bocce ball court and smart lights throughout (can program with different color schemes). Everyone who steps foot into our yard says "wow". He just finished our front yard (I couldn't wait to have them transform that as well). I wouldn't hesitate to give them a call. Both Mary (holds down the office) and Bob are super responsive and easy to work with. I wish I had a bigger yard to see what else they could do for us! This is a real buyer beware. I'm sure Bob will tell you how horrible I was and how this is all my fault. If you want to see the job and the plans, let me know. You can judge for yourself. Be aware that if there is any kind of disagreement about the job, the quality of the work or even 'if' the job is finished, this is his policy: "Please note, as stated in my email yesterday, all completed jobs with outstanding balances after two weeks from date of completion have liens placed until the outstanding balances are paid." The key here is 'completed'. He drew up our plans, he was hired to do the job he designed. He did NOT complete the job as designed and many elements were poorly done - like the concrete work. I immediately called, left a message and followed up with email - within 1 day of the 'so called completion" . I was told he was gone over the holidays. When he returned, he said, "I've put a lien on your property." There was no discussion of concerns or resolution. That was literally the first response I got to my email and phone call. Furthermore, when we did agree to final payment and removal of the lien, he wanted me to pay him in full and then he would release the lien. Really? He also collected more than the maximum 10% deposit for the job - which is against the law. So be aware of that as well. This is per the CA State Contractors Licensing Board. And then forgot the subtract it from the final amount owing. Again - be careful. I never saw Bob on the job. As far as I could tell he put his people out there and never supervised the work - especially at the critical time when the concrete work was poured and finished. He also 'accidentally' removed old fencing that was not agreed to in the contract and then said, 'oh I thought that is what you SAID to do'. Seemed to have no connection with the written contract and the work. He did clean up the job site very well. read more

I had heard really good things about these guys and they also had good Yelp reviews... We were looking forward to working with them. I know people that were very satisfied with their work, and yes that was a year or two ago. However I think good response days were in the past. Too bad. It appears they have way too much business these days. It takes them a long time to respond and follow-up and without much sense of importance or urgency. Even talking with their office staff doesn't show much interest in new client projects. We've contacted them for projects twice over the past 18 months and both times were surprised at how they just didn't seem all that interested in new business, unless it was for the much larger jobs. Granted ours is not some monster property in the hills with 2 acres and $30,000 of work, but these are reasonably sized projects by any standard for us and our neighbors. Here's another really amazing thing: Their bids even have a fuel charge! Are you serious!?!? These are local contractors for specific projects in the same city or county. Somebody is giving these guys very bad business advice. No thanks. There are plenty of guys out there that really want the work. PROS These guys have good business potential They know how to do quality work. They do seem to have some satisfied customers. CONS They're pricing is strange: A fuel surcharge?!? They're job pricing is high. Seems like they have too much business already. I hope they can get some business coaching and come back to earth with quality work at reasonable pricing the way they used to run their business. read more

I really have liked to work with this company. I have a great house that needs a little work on the outside. The irrigation system was broken in multiple locations. Many contractors I called first were only interested in jobs that involved thousands of dollars worth of repairs. They were not interested in coming out and doing simple maintenance on an existing system. Either they never called back or came up with repeated excuses on why they could not come. I guess business must be good for them already. ALD promptly gave me a quote that was very reasonable, and Chris came out on time and set up new sprinkler valves and heads. I think my system is old as there was a problem with a leak that required me to all ALD at 5p on a Sunday. Almost miraculously Bob came out and fixed this without charge. Chris also came a second time and fine-tuned some of the valves. I like them because Mary, the scheduler, and the front-line staff are very friendly and responsive. The bottom line is that you can work with them - they come out to do repairs that apparently other companies on Yelp will not do, for whatever reason. I would suggest that when you fix the irrigation system you know the valves to turn them off without have to turn off the whole house supply. Many systems are old and leak, and it is very handy to be able to turn off the water supply until ALD can come out and look at it. My house has a front lawn and a rear lawn valve, so even if the system won't turn off, you can shut off the irrigation valve to that area read more

I'd have to agree about them not being too cordial about potential new business. I wish the very first words in response to my inquiry weren't that they were backed up for two weeks. I'd have considered waiting if Bob would've said he'd like to talk in a couple of weeks when they aren't backed up. Instead I had to offer that. But it's ok. I called another place and had a wonderful conversation and think I'll get what I need from them. Update: I appreciate the attempt at concern. Yes I did lose interest when I had to ask for a call back vs it being offered. It's all fine. It's nice to know upfront what type of service you will receive so I can make an informed choice. . My backyard was desperate for an update, and Bob came to the rescue! We tore out beatup old concrete, dying plants, messed up irrigation systems, everything! In a matter of weeks our unused backyard space turned into an enjoyable space for kids and adults alike. My only wish after the fact is that I should have met these guys sooner.
