This review is not about the service. Service was absolutely amazing. So polite and attentive! I just really had high expectations for all the reviews and stars. We ordered the following: -cheese bread, this was the best thing I ate -veggie bowl with tofu added, and interesting choice of veggies for an Asian inspired dish and the tofu pieces were too large for me. Spring rolls were definitely frozen -Korean fried chicken, my partner liked the chicken It is kinda outdated inside and out. Patio cushions were dirty and tattered. Pet friendly patio with some vegetarian options
Was able to make a same day reservation on the patio with our dog. Great service and staff. They served our dog like he was a human with fancy plates for water and food. They have a great doggy menu and good portions. Food was very good and good prices. It was a great relaxing dinner with nice patio. They use high quality ingredients and the portions are large.
This place is a fantastic hidden gem! Booked lunch for my honeys birthday weekend and had Austin as our server. Super friendly, personable, engaging and attentive to our needs. Food was hearty, flavorful and fantastic - wish we had more room to try more! Also we had to ask about the music playlist as it was a great mix! Grabbed it Alex as she had amazing taste! :) Will be back next time we're in town!
3.5 stars but rounding up for great service! The chicken & waffles was perfectly made but we were very disappointed in their cole slaw! It comes in the same size as their syrup ramekin and the first one they brought out was nasty, bottom of the barrel type slaw. They brought out another one but it's still such a sad amount of cole slaw compared to the entree. We love their dog menu but the prices in general here are quite high!
We came in one night for dinner with our pup and had a lovely evening! Service was wonderful. Marlena took very good care of us. I got some delicious sliders and my hubs got the Korean Fried Chicken. He loved it and his only regret was he couldn't finish it. A lovely evening out and we'll def come back if we're in town again!
I've been to Sur at The Barnyard 3 times. The food is consistently good across the board. The cheese bread with corn sounds a little strange, but somehow it totally works -- unique and delicious. The bacon cheeseburger was really good, the Caesar salad was a solid classic, and the fried chicken dinner was hearty and satisfying with two large pieces of chicken plus sides. The banana cream pie has a spin on it. I love the brûléed bananas. What stood out the most, though, was the service. My family is in the restaurant business, so I tend to have pretty high standards when it comes to hospitality and customer service. Our server, Razi, was truly excellent. He had the perfect balance of friendly and professional, made great recommendations, checked in often, and made sure we had everything we needed. At one point, I was feeling a little lightheaded, and he immediately brought me a cold towel and made sure my water glass stayed full so I could stay hydrated. That level of attentiveness really stood out to me. He was fast, efficient, customer-focused, and brought such positive energy to the restaurant. So many restaurants struggle these days with finding employees who seem trained, experienced, and genuinely engaged -- Razi was the complete opposite. He was outstanding. I even made a point to share positive feedback with the owner before leaving because great employees deserve recognition. I honestly could see Razi managing this restaurant -- or another one -- someday. As a fun side note, we also learned he's a singer/rapper, which somehow perfectly matched his great personality and energy. Really memorable experience overall.
10 stars if I could honestly! This place is not only so good, but all the staff are extremely friendly. We found ourselves here on the way home from a 12 hour drive from Santa Barbra with our doggies in the pouring rain. I had called ahead of time to confirm they are a dog friendly restaurant and although the rain was coming down so hard and they closed the outside patio, they let our 2 furry friends in with no problem! I let them know they were on trazodone so would not be a problem at all and they behaved very well, but this is the first time I have ever had a restaurant allow the doggos inside the establishment! We ordered a couple things, their corn/bacon bread as an appetizer, the appetizer shrimp and we opted for the cajun flavor, my fiancé got the scallop risotto, and I ordered the seafood linguine pesto pasta. After having everything, we felt the cajun shrimp would not be something we would order again. However, everything else?! Amazing! Worth every penny. It was so funny, my fiancé liked my pesto dish more and I liked his scallop dish more, we should have switched honestly. The scallop dish came with lobster sauce and it was just so worth it! Highly recommend coming here, it was very enjoyable and we absolutely see us coming back. I also ordered their Guavamelon cocktail and it was to die for! This was our last stop on a trip from Livermore to San Diego and back going through Santa Barbra and it did not disappoint!
LOVEEEE SOME FRESH AHI. We chose this place in the barnyard for the menu compared to others. Classic American food with a lot of Asian fusion inspired dishes. Nice simple outdoor seating, good service. Our server helped steer us in the right direction with the sashimi salads. The ahi was fresh and gently seared. The salad was a bit over dressed. Would get again or try something else on their extensive menu.
I'm a little behind on my review, but check this place out! We had dinner our first night here when we visited Carmel a few months ago. I really enjoyed a lot of the unique options they had here. We started out with delicious cocktails as well as some cheese bread. The cheese bread had corn on top which was a unique touch but it was all delicious. For my entree I had the Sur Tikka Masala which was a very unique take by using sea bass instead of chicken. I had to try that since it was a specialty item and since when do you see sea bass and tikka? I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would but it was still good. I added on the jumbo shrimp which was really good. For dessert, although Steven preferred another option, he allowed me to go with the bon bons. I was like a little kid and had to get them due to the show that comes with it and the uniqueness, again, with the item. Little did I expect these bon bons to be SO massive as well as a complete show by our server Austin! Austin was the star of the night. He was truly amazing. He checked on us frequently, everything went smooth and he had me laughing. Once he performed the bon bon horror show, I knew it was a visit that I would never forget. Request him if you are able to. I laughed so much that I started showing the video to friends immediately. Little did I know that many members of my book club have been to this restaurant and commented on how much they loved it there.
Visited Sur during car week. Glad I made a reservation in advance as this is a very popular restaurant. We had a delicious salad with poached pears, candied pecans, orange slices and shredded carrots with arugula. Our main course was Sand dabs with Brussels Sprouts, sliced carrots and cauliflower florets, ( no Bok Choy this time). Both very tasty. We were dining with friends celebrating an anniversary, so we celebrated with champagne. Too full for dessert. Service was great during this busy night. The ambiance is quite nice with outdoor seating as well.
Solid 4. Food was okay, but the drinks and service were great. Stopped by for dinner after hiking all afternoon at Big Sur. Came in around 7p without ressy, for 2. They didn't have tables immediately available, but offered a seat at the bar and can move us to a table when one opens up. Host was really nice! We ended up choosing to stay in our own little corner of the bar even when a table became available on the patio within ~15mins. Ambience was a little dim and moody. What we ordered: - Passionfruit lemonade: didn't quite taste like passionfruit, but it was still good! (Forgot picture, got too excited) - Prickly pear lemonade: tastes like what it said it was, my bf really enjoyed it. (With refill!) (Forgot picture, got too excited) - Blood orange lemonade: probably the best one out of the 3 lemonades! Lemonade with an aftertaste of blood orange. I love citrus. (Ordered as a refill in place of the passionfruit) - Ordered coffee, but they were out of regular coffee. Mark thought on his feet and offered to make an espresso with added water for an Americano (we still had an hour drive back home, thank you!) (Forgot picture, got too excited) - Clam chowder, bowl (soup of the day): Not as creamy as a typical clam chowder. Tastes like there was some kind of stock in it, different but good. Wished we had gotten more clams. (Forgot picture, got too excited) - Seafood jambalaya: it was Creole version! Plenty of fish, 2 jumbo perfectly cooked shrimp, bell peppers, and sausages. Spices were there, but so was that tomato. Like, a lot of tomato.. almost tomato pasta saucy. - Seafood linguine: tastes like linguine, pasta flavor was very standard. It was creamy, 2 types of fish, 3 clams, and 2 jumbo shrimp, and 2 small pieces of cheese bread topped with yellow corn! Corn! I never had cheese bread with corn. It was nice and toasted. I really enjoyed the bread. Mark L was a great server. Seemed really busy with manning the bar and helping with tables, but he was there when we needed him (questions and additional requests) and frequently checked in with us and kept our drinks (and water!) filled.
Party of 2 on Saturday afternoon. My hubby and I arrive at 1:30 and were welcomed invitingly and sat promptly. Our server was friendly and helpful and our seats were comfortable. Everything we tried was good. I had a Peachy Keen to sip on and the hubby had a beer. The Peachy keen was just that, wonderful. The bacon cheese bread is a must. Crab cakes are better with other the caramelized onion and I love onion so.... Hubby had the dish and chips, he said they are different since it's chilean Seabass but it's good. He doesn't eat coleslaw and I say they need a better recipe. The banana cream pie is really good. The establishment is very clean and comfortable. We will go back for other options on the future.

We came here with our dog and had a wonderful experience. Nadine was our server and she was helpful, efficient, and kind. The food was really good! We had fried chicken and a French dip sandwich. Our dog loved his patty, too. We sat outside on the patio and it was beautiful. A little cold but they had heaters which made it better. Overall, a great time! read more
Everything about this place was amazing! We had reservations and were seated immediately. They accommodated our pup and placed us outside with heat lamps for a nice evening :) Our server was Mark! He was absolutely wonderful. He checked in often to make sure we were all good and was very kind throughout our meal. Even his neighbor server, Alpha, was awesome too! He periodically checked in and even said congrats to being newlyweds. I've been in the service industry for 10+ years, so it was great to see smooth teamwork amongst the servers. We ended up closing the house down and even then, Mark never made us feel rushed. We'd told him we just got married and he took care of our B&B for us! Super sweet. Food was delicious. It's so nice to have chefs cook the meat just right. Usually when I order a rare steak, it comes out cooked to medium, but this was perfect! We loved everything and we were very happy to have our special minimoon dinner over there :) we'd been researching where to go for weeks, so we're glad we made the right choice to dine here. I grew up around this area. Whenever I come back home or recommend places for people to eat, Sur at the Barnyard is always on the list! We came the day before Thanksgiving right around 5:40 pm and we didn't have an issue finding seats for a group of 5. The servers are always so hospitable and very accommodating. 2 people in our group came almost 20 minutes late but our server Matt was extremely patient and still checked up on us to begin our appetizers and drinks. I ordered the lavender lemon drop. Most lavender drinks I order always lack the lavender flavor but this one was really good! Perfect balance of sweet and sour...sugar rim was a great touch! We also ordered the calamari strips for the table. I love how much calamari came in the ratio of calamari and batter, but I'll always find calamari rings better (personal preference). I also ordered the seared scallop risotto and this was very good! I would order this again in a heartbeat because of how well the risotto was cooked and how much flavor the scallops had. Matt -- THANK YOU for being such a great server. My entire family loved it. We didn't even ask for dessert and he ended our night with complimentary ice cream. My husband and I decided to try the Sur and were so happy we did! The lavender lemon drop was AMAZING. Probably my favorite lemon drop I've ever hard. The sashimi wonton was great. The kona steak with jumbo prawns were delicious. Last but not the least, the dessert was so fun. Our server Austin was so awesome! Super attentive and we've been to a lot of fancy steakhouses and restaurants but his service really stood out. Super genuine and helpful. He definitely made our dining experience! read more

This place was highly recommended by a good friend so I made a reservation for today at 1pm thru open table. Went there showed them my confirmation but the hostess said they couldn't see it on their computer but they will accommodate us in 10 minutes. We were treated like walk in guests, seating so many groups ahead of us who were there waiting for their table who doesn't have any reservations at all. That 10 minutes became 28 minutes, I know, because I made sure I time them. We were seated, yet another 15 minutes pass before a server came to our table. Our server is polite ace courteous so I'll give them that. Foods came on time. We ordered the Asian chicken for appetizers, it was okay. I ordered the scallops risotto which I like. Flavors are not too strong, just perfect for my palate. My daughter ordered some steak, and she likes it. My husband ordered a steak as well. All in all foods are okay for the price. Huge space, can be loud. Mohammad their manager, gave us some champagne while waiting. My biggest issue is the reservation and having to wait while others that walks in are being seated before us. Not a pleasurable experience for our first time visit. read more
My husband and I had an amazing dinner at Sur at The Barnyard while visiting Monterey. We made a reservation for Friday at 7:45 pm the day before. They were understandably busy, but we were greeted and seated promptly. The restaurant was spacious and a bit eclectic. Our server was Brent and he was phenomenal! He was friendly, attentive, and he made great recommendations. We ordered the following: Cheese bread, complimentary with Yelp check-in Espresso martini ~$16 Sashimi won tons $20 Kona steak plate $38 + 3 jumbo grilled prawns $12 Sand Dabs $28 Sorbet $10 The cheese bread was just okay, but everything else was wonderful and seasoned well. My husband's steak was cooked perfectly. My sand dabs were nice and crispy. Both plates came with sides and had generous portions. Between my entree, a few bites of the sashimi wontons, and the delicious espresso martini, I was very full but we still managed to order dessert. We came here to have lunch to celebrate our wedding anniversary of 18 years. Met our fabulous waiter, Austin! Superb service by him!!! This is how you get customers coming back, you have great staff who truly and genuinely care about their job! He went over the drink menu for us and told us about the coolers they had, that peaked my interest, so I've ordered their Passion fruit coolers. It was so refreshing and delicious! We quickly looked over the menu and decided on grilled steak tacos and seabass fish and chips. Portions were good. Food tasted good, we were happy! Austin checked on us several times and asked to refill our drinks. He surprised us at the end with a little treat of lindor chocolates and show! I was very impressed!!! Austin, you keep doing what you're doing, buddy!!! Fantastic experience, we really enjoyed our lunch today! Definitely coming back to try other menu items. read more

Awesome dessert for kids and adults. There were four adults and one toddler and the three ice creams were more than enough to feed us all plus the toppings of caramel sprinkles and chocolate melt. Our waiter Austin was friendly and pleasant. The food was alright; the food was more 3.5 stars. We had the calamari, Brussels sprouts, cheese bread and Kona steak. The Kona steak comes with rice, but we subbed the rice with mashed potatoes. They put wet ginger next to the mash and we wished they would've had the smarts to put the ginger separately in a small sauce bowl. The bar area is nice. We liked the bartender. read more

First time visiting, big spacious restaurant, great service & delicious food. There's outdoor and indoor dining, make sure you make reservations, it gets busy. We went on a hot day, seemed like there wasn't AC but if you sit outside or inside by a window it's much cooler with a breeze. I appreciate the server constantly refilling our waters & checking on us. Make sure you check-in to get their free cheese bread, it was so good! We enjoyed our Chinese chicken salad (refreshing with generous portions of chicken) & the Kona steak plate (medium rare, tender, buttery & flavorful). We celebrated 2 birthdays, they brought out 2 complimentary chocolate covered ice cream with dry ice, it was so cool & fun. Will definitely return to try more items on the menu the next time we visit Carmel! read more

Where do I start? We came to celebrate my birthday and let me start off by saying that ALL of the food was delicious. We had the sashimi wontons to start as well as the famous cheesy bread. For entrees we had the Kona steak, and chicken and waffles. But the best party may have been our server, Alpha, who was so friendly and hospitable right from the start. He was very attentive and informative and so funny!!! He also brought out the arctic bonbon after hearing it was my birthday. The place is beautifully decorated as well, lovely lighting and warm, inviting ambiance. We actually dined here twice in one week- it was so good! The first night it was quiet and the second night it was very busy and lively. Luckily that night they put us In a quiet corner. Both servers were great, especially Austin. Friendly and personable. We had the grilled Miso glazed salmon which was excellent , and filet mignon sliders and the chicken Marsala, which also were very good. The second night the majority of us had the seafood linguine which was so delicious! I'd definitely go back for that! The portion was huge and we had plenty of leftovers! All in all, service and food were great and we'll definitely go back next time we are in town! read more

We were displaced from Carmel during the holiday power outage and were looking for restaurants that were still open we found SUR. They have a great variety in their menu and the perfect portions. I had the Seafood Linguine and I definitely got my moneys worth! The scallion pesto was really flavorful and different. My husband got the sliders which our waiter Austin recommended they were great as well! The atmosphere is really nice as well both inside and outside have ample seating and they are dog friendly! Austin was also friendly and helpful great service I highly recommend this restaurant! read more

What a great way to spend my friend's bday today. The food was great. I thoroughly enjoyed my Chicken Marsala dish. The only suggestion I would make though is to add actual mushrooms. The porcini sauce was good, but having actual mushrooms would have complemented it. My friend had ordered the crab pasta, and said it was good as well. Service was on point!! Grant was super attentive, friendly, and helpful. Thanks again!! Ambiance was nice, and clean. Very spacious. Keep up the great food & service SUR!! Austin was great with recommendations and really attentive. Food was tasty and portions were sizeable. Nice vibe, we sat on the patio with our dog (who they brought water immediately and have a menu for). I especially loved the mango tango drink. The Bixby bourbon was also really good. This use to be one of our favorite local restaurants, but since being sold to new owners a few years back every time we have visited we have had a poor experience. Like every time. I really wish this wasn't the case because we use to love this place. This last time was by far the worst experience to date, which is why I finally chose to leave a review. Not to be mean, but just to share my experience in hopes that this would be helpful feedback to the owners and also to people considering eating here. I typically leave a review like this when I have had a bad experience multiple times, then after I speak with the owner or manager and provide more details, I will usually delete it. Reviews are meant to be constructive to help identify where improvement is possibly needed. I would not leave a review based on one visit, but after numerous visits I feel it's warranted. On this particular occasion I want to clarify that we had a really lovely and attentive server (I would give her five stars), but the quality of the food and drinks was just not good. We spent close to $200 and just felt really disappointed because we remember how consistently good these dishes use to be. Quite frankly it made me sad. Not sure what has happened, but to me it feels like the quality of the ingredients and the execution when making the dishes has declined considerably. That's all I can come up with. The presentation looks lovely. But that's where it ends. Maybe other dishes on the menu are better. We are creatures of habit and tend to order the same dishes when we are repeat customers. We have tried most dishes on their menu, but these in particular have consistently been our favorites in years past. This is my second updated review. I gave very specific details on what we didn't like about each dish in my original review. I am including the response I got from someone affiliated with the restaurant, which prompted me to update my review. I do not believe he is the owner but I could be wrong. Perhaps he is. This was a very disappointing and unprofessional response. I am upgrading my review because we did have a good server and I wanted to clarify this. This isn't about the staff. We don't want a refund, but based on the response from this manager and having numerous poor experiences we have no intention of coming back. I had previously read in the local paper that the new owners were not local (or perhaps someone told me this, I really don't recall- I think they also purchased Pangaea Grill, another popular local restaurant). All I know is we do have fond memories of the previous owner Bill always greeting us at the host stand, and always finding a table for us even when they were fully booked, and the food was consistently exceptional. This is why we became repeat customers. We have many good memories of dining here over the years, including many birthdays and family celebrations. I did not mean to personally offend the new owners with this review, but if in fact you are not local and you are depending on others to manage this business for you, you should want to know what at-least one local patron that frequented a lot in the past thinks based on my last few visits. read more

It is spread out and safe all servers wear masks, we dined inside and felt safe outside is a must
Does the restaurant take reservations?
Yes I think so, but it was first come first serve during Covid
Do they still serve the Arctic BonBons?
Yes they do, they are not listed on the main menu, but are on the dessert menu. We just had them the other night for dessert.
Do they still have happy hour all night on Tuesdays?
Yes. I was just there a couple Tuesdays ago.
I plan on getting dinner here after a hike at Point Lobos. Is it casual enough to wear hiking clothes?
Yeah, especially an early dinner. Has a pub feel to it.
