The place is kind of confusing because it seems kinda fancy but casual, still good for kids but the menu choices are pricey. I got a risotto with scallops and even though there is tons of cheese in risotto there was a stack of Parmesan shavings on top of the rice as well making it too salty with a weird texture. Wow this place exceeded my expectations! It was a little hard to find. We had to park and walk around, but that wasn't a problem. The restaurant was tucked away inside the plaza that resembled a secret garden -- so pretty. The inside was charming and tastefully designed. We sat at a comfy corner booth. Hospitality was amazing from the beginning. The waitress gave us good recommendations and was so patient with our family of five. I went with the wagyu sliders that came with a side of fries. The best customer service I've had. Very attentive and accommodating. Went here after hiking Point Lobos on a Saturday afternoon. We called ahead of time and asked if they were free to sit a group of 13 in ten minutes, and they said yes! They prepared two long tables for us, but then we realized we miscounted and left 1 person out. The staff decided to give us another whole table so the extra person didn't have to squeeze! What I ordered: Sur's Famous French Dip -- a New York strip steak on a french roll. The sandwich was great, but the French Dip was very bland-- not memorable at all. Soup of the Day -- Clam Chowder. Loved their clam chowder. Perfect creaminess. Bonus: You can use your Yelp check-in for free cheese-sticks. They only gave us 3 boats of cheese-sticks. I understand they didn't want us to abuse the check-in, but I each boat has about 4 cuts, while our group had 14 people. A bit awkward, haha. At the end, they surprised us with free dessert. 2 scoops of chocolate-covered vanilla ice-cream and a small tray with chocolate syrup, sprinkles, and nuts. It was cool to witness because they had dry-ice under the ice-cream and poured water onto the dry-ice to give us a little show. My wife and I decided we needed to take advantage of the summer and get away to the coast for an afternoon date and dinner. We looked online for good place for dinner in the evening in Carmel. We ran into Sur at the Barnyard and the ambience looked great with a wonderful menu. We headed to the Hay first for cocktails, an appetizer and a putting contest. Then we headed into Carmel for a little window shopping to work up an appetite. The Sur at the Barnyard did not disappoint. The location is just outside of Carmel but the Barnyard has its own ambience and it fits in great. The interior is comfortable and well appointed. The staff was dressed professionally with no servers in yoga pants. Austin, our server, was fun and engaging. He made the experience that much better. The house salad was amazing with fresh cheese, apples, candied walnuts, croutons, and mixed greens. Was more than enough for two. Austin was great corking our wine and pouring. My wife had the striped bass and I had the bacon cheeseburger. They were both fantastic. Was more than enough to fill us up. The burger was juicy and the bass was flavorful. I ended up going solo which wasn't originally planned so maybe the famous bon-bon dessert would've upped the stars. Honestly, it was the strawberry lemonade, the cute decor and ambiance, & the cheesy bread (free with yelp checkin) that saved this. Strawberry lemonade was perfect flavor. The cheesy bread almost tasted like pizza with no red sauce and more oil. The beef stroganoff was lackluster. Was looking for a dog friendly place for a nice dinner with my family and so glad we chose this spot! Would not recommend doing a walk-in at peak hours, though. We had a party of 5 people and one hungry dog. We chose this place because of their dog menu! So fun. The server brought out water for the dog, too. The dog patty was a large portion, our dog couldn't finish it (she's never ever left food on the table before haha). Our server was so animated and friendly. The food came out fast. The service was attentive, even as an outside table. We ordered the cheese bread, sand dabs, seafood linguine, special pineapple fried rice, beef stroganoff, and chicken piccata. Everyone was happy and full! Favorites were the cheese bread and the linguini. The food was plated beautifully. I wish I had known cheese bread comes with some of the entrees. We ended up with so of it! My only complaint was the vague wait time estimate. We did need an outside table and were doing walk-in on a weekend evening, so I won't hold it against them. But their estimate was "at least 25 minutes" and we waited about an hour for our table. Would absolutely recommend for anyone looking for a pet-friendly dining option. We ordered wontons, jambalaya, and Asian bbq wings. The wings were ok. Maybe an 8/10. Jambalaya was about a 7.5/10. We did like the wontons though. Crispy, and lots of flavor within each bite. Not gonna like though.. that cheese bread was delicious (especially if you dip it in ranch). We also came on a Wednesday night and they had Wine Wednesday house wine specials so we got that as well. I'm so sad it has gone downhill. I'd been here several times post-COVID and it gets worse. The service is slow and quality of food has decreased and lacks flavor. They changed a few of their menu items. The last time I was there, I found a piece of metal (most likely from a steel wool) which was terrifying and concerning. The coating on the chicken was interesting--maybe panko and breadcrumbs? There was little to no seasoning in the coating or chicken. The sandwich was massive. The coleslaw wasn't very good. Our server, Grant, was friendly, attentive, and super helpful with recommendations--he made our dining experience even better. We started with the cheese bread (wish it was a slightly bigger portion or came with a dipping sauce) and the tempura artichokes, which were absolutely delicious. For our mains, we had the Caesar salad, fish and chips, hoisin-glazed skirt steak, and salmon tacos--everything was flavorful and well-prepared. The watermelon lemonade was overly sweet and tasted like artificial syrup, we had to send it back. The steak tacos were good in portion but lacked flavor. The salsa lacked flavor. The guac looked more like a sauce, not sure if actual avocados were used and also lacked flavor. The Kona steak was cooked to perfection (medium rare as ordered) but also lacked any flavor. I couldn't taste the coffee at all and it lacked any seasoning. It was only edible if you ate it with the sauce. A good steak shouldn't NEED a sauce, the sauce should just enhance the flavoring. I sub the coleslaw for more corn. Kiddo loves the kids Sur Burger. Hubs loves the Sur burger and the steak. Everything is well flavored and well seasoned. Austin and Roz are two of the best servers in the business. They remember us EVERY time we walk in. And they welcome us in like family. Spent the day exploring Monterey and Carmel and decided to have dinner here to wrap up our little adventure from the city. They have a few tables outside, which we opted for since we had our dog with us. Unfortunately, this is where I'm taking off one star due to how dirty the floor was. I get that it's outdoors, so it can only be so clean but we noticed some sort of small droppings from either mice or squirrels which we had to keep our dog away from. Not only that, but our white dogs underside and paws were filthy from laying on the ground under the table. We already ordered at this point, so we just stayed. We ordered their Cheesy Bread as an appetizer, then the Ahi Sashimi with Asian Salad and Kona Steak with Rice. I was really excited about the Cheesy Bread and it was everything I hoped for, garlicky and cheesy! However, I was pretty disappointed with my entree as the Ahi Tuna did not taste fresh and the texture just seemed off. They may have better seafood dishes, but this was not it for me. There were 3 of us and we had collectively a cheeseburger with fries, fried chicken and the seared scallop risotto. The cheeseburger was good, but nothing special. The risotto was very flavorful, but was a bit dry. Risotto is supposed to be a bit creamy. This one was not. It was formed into a cylinder shaped. A property cooked risotto would never hold it shape like that, but the taste profile was good. Full disclosure years ago (COVID time) we had gotten take out from here specifically the fried chicken dinner and it was FABULOUS. However, something terrible has happened since then. Instead of being a normal flour breaded chicken, it is a bread crumb fried chicken that was mostly greasy and gritty. Very disappointed!!! We looked at the rating of the restaurant and expected a decent meal, didn't happen. The service was good but that is about all we can say about the meal. I ordered sesame cabbage salad with chicken and my spouse ordered sand dabs. The salad was old( brown leaves on the romaine lettuce) no cabbage in site and barely any dressing. The sand dabs were decently cooked but no seasoning in the batter or in the sauce! It was not a cheap meal and very substandard.
