This review is for their cooking class. I've never been to a cooking class before, so I don't really have a baseline but this still exceeded my expectations. Firstly, there ended up only being 4 of us for Classic French Pastries so it felt more like a private class. We did split tasks so not everyone got to do everything, but it was still very hands on and I was also able to ask the instructor a lot of questions. I thought it was really nice they had complimentary water and tea on hand, plus it's BYOB if you so choose. This time we made mini pavlovas, quiche, and savory scones, and we not only got to eat our creations at the end of class, but also take home most of the leftovers. Some items I was surprised didn't come out as good as expected but our instructor said there was an oven issue so maybe it was a one-off? Either way, it was still fun and I learned a lot - definitely a great value for less than $100. read more

Those spices and peppers had us coughing. The potato croquettes were a creamy, cheesy success and the brussels sprouts were killer. First time having them with chorizo. The flavor profile was amazing. Didn't really care for the egg tarts. Overall, a beautiful FUN class! If you know anything remotely about cooking already and are hoping to enhance your skills, I wouldn't recommend this class. We only cut 1 shallot, had very little hands-on time cooking except for shaking a dressing and mixing/cutting dough and ultimately left really disappointed. The dessert was made for us (we didn't even get to sprinkle our own salt/olive oil over top), the entire sauce was made for the pasta (and frankly, we weren't even in the room to hear about how to create it) and let's just say it doesn't take 4 people to flip a steak. I totally understand working in groups but this was a poor execution. The only benefit was that people clean up for you along the way and tools you may not have at home are provided (though really it's just an attempt to get you to purchase a gadget while on site). You don't even get to sit down to eat your meal--we all stood awkwardly hunched over plates. I had really looked forward to this and for the experience and especially cost am deeply disappointed. This was my first time taking a baking class at Sur La and I had a great experience. I took the summer macaron baking class where they taught us to bake s'mores and cherry cheesecake macarons. The class size was small and we were split up in groups of 3 or 4 with a total of 3 groups. We had two instructors, Eric and Diamond. Both were great and paid close attention to all groups. They were very funny and interactive. We made all the different elements were made from scratch, which was interesting. My only complain was that the class ran for longer than promised. While booking it said that it was a 2 hour long class, however, upon arriving Eric mentioned that the class would be 3 hrs. The class actually ran for 3.5 hours and we all were too tired at the end of it. Eric also over baked one batch of our macarons and refused to acknowledge it. But overall, I did have fun and thought that it was a great class. I also do think that the class is a great value for money and the selection of the desserts was appropriate for the season. Great in person cooking class with Chef Eric. Feast of the Seven Fishes taught in Christmas Eve...perfection!!! Didn't know we could bring our own wine - that was announced in an email only three hours before the class and I didn't see it. But you can buy some in the mall. Groups of four made a ton of food. I did feel some assumptions were made that people taking the class already knew how to cook so I felt a little behind but everyone was great in keeping me up to pace. read more

We did a cooking class making beef wellington and it was SO MUCH FUN and SOOOOOOO delicious. Our instructor, Mimi was awesome and it was incredibly easy to follow along. They do all of the prep work and cleaning for you, and you work kind of on a team to create the dish. It was a really nice social night, we got to know our table mates. It instilled a lot of confidence in us that we could do it ourselves at home! We both learned about cooking techniques that we didn't realize before. At the end, our meal we created together was delicious. We loved this experience because you're getting a high end meal for less of the cost of what it would be at a nice restaurant, and you get to do it yourself and meet people. Located on the 3rd floor of the the Bloomingdale's building on Michigan Ave, it's easy to get lost finding this Sur La Table. Or is that just me? It's one of the smaller Sur La Table stores I've been to, and by the looks of it, it seemed that most of the traffic the store gets is from their cooking class participants. I never would have known of this store's existence if not for the calendar of classes that popped up on my Instagram. Having never made fresh pasta before, I happily snagged a spot for their Rustic Italian class. The menu was fresh pasta and shrimp with a simple sauce made of cherry tomatoes, shallots, garlic, fresh basil, and white wine. Added to the pasta was a beautiful arugula, nectarine, and buratta salad. Making gelato was also part of the demo, but that was essentially watching the chef make the ice cream base and then he later ran it through an ice cream maker during the break. It's a bit of a crapshoot when you take food classes with the masses. I've been stuck with both completely hapless participants and with pretty skilled cooks. It's all okay. Just have a good attitude and go with it. I would take classes here again if something interesting caught my my eye. Located on Michigan Avenue, this third floor cooking school has an intimate kitchen and kitchen supply area. Students of class get 10% discount for supplies. This was the first time I was student here. I with three others split a chicken, buttered it with thyme, pan fried one side and baked it. The biscuits were mixed and I molded them into four smooth biscuits. Ours was only ones with no wild bulges. The sauces were made for chicken, salad and biscuits. The salad was simply made with arugula and halved grapes. This class is not for low calorie dieters. The meal was remarkable. The secret ingredient was butter, butter, and more butter. Unfortunately diners can't take food home. I would take another class. Parking with validation is $10 for three hours. Afterwards it is $40 or $50. read more

My husband and I attended a cooking class on November 4th, instructed by Chef Eric. It was so much fun and informative. We did Date night: steak the tuscan way. In class, we cooked pan roasted flank steak, homemade tagliatelle pasta, and vanilla ice cream with nutella (I wanted a pint to take home). Everything was so good, especially the homemade pasta. Chef Eric was a great instructor. The class is hands and if it is a full class you will be 4 at a station which was ok. It's also byob. Excellent customer service at Sur La Table on Michigan Avenue. I thought I'd make a quick run through Sur La Table before my hair appointment. Picked up a few items and headed to check out. I don't know exactly what happened but when I reached in my purse for my wallet it wasn't there. I looked around and couldn't find it so I left. I got home several hours later thinking it was in my condo but could not find it. I began to panic. Thankfully, I received a call from Chuck, the store manager. He said they had found my wallet and would keep it in the safe until morning. Chuck's resourcefulness at finding my cell phone number was amazing. The next morning Chuck's called and said whatever time worked for me I could come by and pick up my wallet. What amazing customer service! Chuck and the rest of the staff at Sur La Table THANK YOU! A good quality cooking class with creative recipes that are actually doable at home! Our class was $69 per person, got to book ahead as they prepare the ingredients exactly to the person's enrolled. And no need to take notes - they provide recipes for everything you make. I've been to a few cooking classes before. In general cooking classes are usually either too complex and thus requires constant hand holding or they're woefully basic and boring to those who are more seasoned in cooking. This experience was a happy medium - doable for the total novice and enough excitement for more experienced cooks. My team and I went to Sur La Table for their New England comfort foods cooking event. Daily they usually have three classes, 11am, 1pm and dinner time. The meal was basically easy to prepare which helped because we had folks on our team who have actually never cooked before. Chef Michael was well-trained and works in restaurants in Japan and New York. He loves what he does and is pretty friendly as well. He really seems to enjoy teaching and showing his passion for foods. He demonstrated methods that he used within the restaurants like how to separate eggs, cutting onions and methods he uses that I'll definitely employ at home. I learned how to make a basic custard (didn't actually get to make it myself, but having never made it before it never occurred to me to make it myself). The custard was absolutely wonderful and the best thing that I had that entire week. My team went head to head against another team and we got compliments from the chef. Glad I got his validation for technique. He tried to set afire to my Brandy, but I already cooked it off before he dropped by, so I missed the circus, but I didn't need my eye brows singed. I'll definitely want to do another cooking class with Chef Michael. He even offered an expresso or coffee while I was cooking. Suffice to say, I kept well caffeinated throughout the experience. I was invited to attend a single's meetup cooking class. I was excited to have attend such wonderful event. I learned so many cool and unique techniques ways of cooking. Our class was taught by the amazing Chef Adam. He was very helpful and gave us some knowledgeable and interesting ways of cooking. Upon everyone's arrival we signed in and took an apron from a basket. The staff had set up along the table some nice chill variety of wines to get the party started and light snacks. After everyone had arrived we were instructed to head over to the sink to wash our hands. The chef and staff members were very attentive and made sure to walk around and lend a hand. The theme of the night was "From Paris With Love" we started out with the Frisee Salad with poached eggs with bacon lardins. Pan roasted chicken breast with fine herbs and whole grain mustard sauce (so very delicious) along with some brown butter mashed potatoes that will have you asking for more. Of course we ended with dessert a French vanilla crème brulee which was amazingly good. Very nice atmosphere, the chef and his staff were very engaging. Everyone in the class was offered a 10% discount to shop at the store. The store has so many cool and different brands of cooking utensils. Very reasonable prices. Before, the class ended the chef raffled off for 2 people to come back and take a class for you and a guest. I didn't win bummer but it's ok because I was able to experience a wonderful time with some fun and enjoyable new people. Good Food and Wine. My husband lucked into a free homemade ravioli workshop. Our group of 5 strolled in ready to dominate the experience, but quickly realized that the cooking class is more suited to groups of 2 or 3. Too much standing around for our group. Nevertheless, the chef was very kind and helped us with steps we missed. We could somewhat go at our own pace. Our meal was good, and the ambience was enhanced by the Santa Claus outside the store. In the store itself, we enjoyed samples and browsing the wide selection of kitchen goods. I'm a pretty experienced home cook so I'm always a bit of an eye roller when a friend wants to take a cooking class, but I was pleasantly surprised with my experience. The two instructors were really fun and helpful, and actually provided some cooking guidance I found very helpful. We made enough food for everyone to enjoy multiple samples, including dessert, and you can take any extras with you. What went well? Everything! I was looking for Xmas placemats and napkins. An elf by the name of Chuck, was super helpful!!! Pointed me in the right direction. Purchased napkins but they didn't work, returned them right away and the next elf (didn't catch their name) on the register quickly figured out how to find my transaction on the register, I misplaced my receipt ‍, Hectic day! However, because it hadn't been more than ten min or so she found the transaction and refunded! Again, extremely helpful! Then decided to browse the store a little more just looking for Xmas gifts, and was served an espresso by someone working for Breville who was super helpful. I ended up purchasing over $700 in gifts for family and myself including 2 espresso makers!, Thank you Chuck, Christina, other person behind the register and the Demo espresso Gal who made my experience at this store so pleasant!! when so many other stores have no staff there to help, this store is run extremely well was on top of it! Such a fun experience! My boyfriend and I did the Healthy Fall class and cooked salmon glazed with pomegranate, quinoa arugula salad, baklava bites, and shrimp zoodles. Came here for the first time to check out the Knife Skills class. Overall, I learned a decent amount of knowledge from the class. However, the instructor seemed to be rushing through the class (which is never good for a bunch of noobs trying to cut things with sharp knives). This inevitably lead to a lot of the knowledge to leave my brain and not stick. I was so focused on keeping up with his next instruction and therefore wasn't able to focus on the previous instruction and truly practice a new skill. They provide a 10% discount on limited store items after the course and you can BYOB (with no cork fee). Overall, in my experience with cooking classes, I appreciate the patience and teaching style from The Chopping Block over Sur La Table. read more

I thought I'd stop in and check out this newly opened shop in the Bloomingdale Building, The shop is located on the third floor, where Mark Shale once was. The store has totally been remodeled. The store has a very modern feeling with exposed cement flooring. There are two sections to this store. The first section is for your shopping needs. It reminded me of Bed, Bath and Beyond. I was able to find an orange peeler, whereas, I haven't been able locate anywhere. The second part is the cooking studio. From what I understand, cooking classes will be offered. I'm sure someone with cooking skills will be reporting on the classes. The staff was very friendly when I was browsing and when I was checking out. I bought my husband the sushi making class for a birthday gift, and we really enjoyed our time. Our instructor Tim was fantastic. He was knowledgable, fun and very professional. We had a group that was quite loud and even slightly rude, but I thought he was great in how he handled them and still made sure everyone had a good time. Tim also took the time to go over a few knife skills and really gave great explanations on not so familiar ingredients. Parking was in the building and validated for $10 for 3 hours. That was a great feature given the store's location on the Magnificent Mile. Also good to note, this class was BYOB (one bottle of wine per two people), but all locations are not BYOB. You should check your location before arriving. Also, you work in groups of 4. The couple we were with was very nice and friendly. However, I would probably go with at least 3 other people next time- just easier to not have to be so polite haha. The only downsides I felt were that you could not take any of the food home because they did not have the necessary license for it. This was my first experience taking a cooking/baking class, but it was everything I could have hoped for and more! My friend and I, along with our moms, took a macaron baking class here on a Saturday morning, and it was such a fun time. The chef leading the class was super knowledgeable and the instructions were so clear every step of the way. A break in the middle allowed us to shop the store (with a discount) and regroup while the macarons were baking. And in the end, we each went home with 20+ macarons that were perfectly imperfect and crazy good. I'd do a class here again in a heartbeat! My only gripe is the price, but after seeing the amount of detail, time, and attention that goes into each class, it totally makes sense. Also to note: apparently these classes are BYOB? My boyfriend and I took the date night steak class yesterday for our 11yr anniversary. We loved every minute of this class. It started at 4 but we arrived at 415. The class was already started but we were able to hop right in. We were paired with another couple (who was cool and fun). We started with the dessert which was chocolate pudding with whipped cream. The main course was steak with grated parm, rositto, and arugula salad. The chef was awesome. He showed us how to peel and chop garlic, the right way to hold a knife, how to dice an onion and much more all while being funny and welcoming. After everything was done we were able to eat what we made. There was enough for the 4 of us to share. Yes we had to eat standing up but u really don't mind it at all. When a friend kindly invited me here to pick out a new blender, I was excited because I have never been here before, and I was Not disappointed! The staff is super friendly, helpful, and knowledgable. There were two walls of blenders and it was a bit overwhelming to find the perfect one for me, but with the saleslady's help, I chose the Kitchen-Aid 5 speed Diamond Blender. It is perfect for my needs and was reasonably priced. Sur La Table also offers cooking classes on how to make a variety of cuisines from all over the world, which is appreciated since I recently retired my microwave for fresher, lighter meal plan options. There are in-store, on-line, and private events available, so I will for sure be signing up for classes. I was happy that their customer service is so attentive and considerate. I visited in the beginning of December, just in time for the Holiday rush, and was treated very nicely. If there had been even the tiniest amount of customer service, there wouldn't be this Yelp review. I called the Michigan Ave. store around 4 on Wednesday, July 13th and spoke with the Manager, Durwood. I said that I had loaf pans that had rusted in the washing machine, even though the instructions said they were machine washable. Over the phone, he said he could give me a store credit. If he had said, "I am not sure what I can do without a receipt." or "Maybe I can help, but, there is no guarantee until I see the items.", I would have found the photo I took of the item when I bought it. From the start, his communication was misleading. I traveled an hour round trip to get to the store before closing and Durwood then told me he could only give me $1.99 per pan because they no longer carried that specific model. I did not have my phone with me, so, I had to rely on Durwood to help me locate proof of purchase. When I asked Durwood to help me locate proof of purchase in the system I realized that Durwood was not trying to help me in any way he could. He was in fact combative and hostile. He insisted there was no way he could look it up, which was blatantly false. After pushing him, he found my records, but, said he did not find the purchase. I stated that I didn't always give my email when I made a purchase and asked for him to look another way. He became agressive and just repeated that he could only give me $1.99 an item. I said this was very disappointing to me. I feel Sur la Table should stand behind their items. He said it was "normal wear and tear". I asked if it was normal for products to fall apart in less than a year? He kept insisting, with gritted teeth and barely suppressed rage that he could only give me $1.99. I said that $1.99 didn't do anything for me. At this point it was not even about the return or money or a credit. It was about a high end store not standing behind their product. Furthermore, it was also about a "buyer beware" attitude. If I expressed how upset I am, as a long standing customer, then I am treated with aggression. I repeated that I was disappointed in Sur la Table. I stated that I wanted to make my disappointment known to Durwood's boss. He said, "Fortunately, she quit. So, there is no one for you to complain to.". I thought that comment was out of line. I was disappointed, but, I had not become emotional and I was not taking it to a personal level. Durwood should have said, "Unfortunately, she is no longer with Sur la Table, so, there is no one else for you to speak with at this time.". His snide and uncalled for response was proof that he was a disgruntled employee who did not care about making customers happy. It was so utterly inappropriate. He smiled through gritted teeth (actually it was a sneer) and said, "You can talk to customer service.". At that point another employee showed up and tried to help and he shot down her suggestion and began talking about me under his breath to her. I said, "Durwood, please speak up so that I can hear what you are saying.". He was saying that the product was not falling apart and that I had purchased it more than a year ago. How would he know that with certainty? I don't always give my email with every purchase. And, rust all around the product makes it defective and unusable. He responded that he could give me the number for customer service. I asked him to give me his full name as well. He gave me the number and walked away without giving his name. I asked him for his last name and he mumbled a name, but, who knows if he was giving his real name. I said to the other sales person that Durwood could be a little nicer and I walked home feeling complete disgust with the way I was treated. At home, I found the photo of the item I took when I bought it. I had purchased 4 loaf pans at $12 each in late October 2021, 8 months ago. There is a limited lifetime warranty, which covers any defects in coating, material, or workmanship. The item number is 0003839785. It is so disappointing Durwood couldn't have done more or tried to do more or even tried to be nice. The items are clearly Sur la Table, the name is stamped on the pans. I hope customer service can actually treat me as a valued customer and not a hostile enemy. If not, Sur la Table doesn't need any more of my money. read more

We came here for my fiances birthday, there were 4 of us and we took the Pizza cooking class. It was a small(er) class of 10 people and it was a blast! I arrived a bit early to shop around and was then informed it's BYOB (it was my error as I didn't read online that we could bring booze). They directed me to a bar/restaurant upstairs that sells wine, picked one out and came back. The staff then kept it in the fridge until it was time for class. The class was very informative and thorough. We received a copy of all the recipes and our team of 4 prepared, cooked and (almost) ate FOUR pizzas! They were delicious and something we would never think to cook up. Singing up was super easy, staff were great and the chef was fantastic! This is not one of my favorite Sur La Table stores and I have been in several. This store always seems to have too much "stuff" and not enough staff. Seldom is there a sales associate on the floor to answer questions or look for back stock. On my most recent shopping trip, on a Saturday before Christmas, they only had 2 cash registered open and one of them was locked up and they had 3 staff members working on it. I waited in line for 25 minutes to check out. Trust me, several people did not have the patiences I have, so they set down their purchases and left. Management needs to take a look at what happened and try to figure out how to prevent that for future shoppers. read more
