My husband and I went to a cooking class at the Old Orchard location in Skokie, IL on December 28th. We were very disappointed by the cooking class. When we arrived we weren't greeted nicely by the staff leading the class. We also had to wait past 4pm to start our class because the staff wasn't prepared. When we were inside the cooking space, we noticed several flies that were all over the kitchen. We finally started the class and we only got to sear the meat. That's it. We didn't get to cook or do anything else. We didn't get to prepare the potatoes, Brussel Sprouts or the sticky toffee pudding. We went to a cooking class to learn something and we only got to sear meat?!! Are you kidding. It was ridiculous. On top of that, there was a staff member that was preparing food without her hair pulled back, and she continued to play with it during the whole class. She also continually touched her face and was picking her nails during the time she was assisting with cooking the things that we should've been allowed to cook. I will never go to another class at this location. It was not a good experience. This was not worth the money that we payed for the class. read more

I love the store so this is not a reflection of that. I went to a cooking class and I felt ripped off. I have gone to many different cooking classes at other stores and restaurants. This one was ridiculous. No instruction, no one was given their own dish to prepare. They just ask if you want to chop this or that. No one would volunteer. I did so I did most of the chopping. Nothing was seasoned properly, nor did they have their timing right. The vegetables finished cooking before the chicken. There was sausage that wasn't browned, it was grey in color. The chicken was colorless. No seasoning on anything. The salad dressing separated before it was poured on the salad so the salad tasted oily. $75 and I was not allowed to take anything home. This is review of the cooking class I took with Amal as the instructor. It was a Greek food class. What an enjoyable evening! Amal was a wonderful teacher. The recipes were easy enough to accomplish but also interesting and flavorful. It was super hands on, we were given many cooking tips and tricks. I bought a very useful microplane that we used during the class to zest a lemon. You get 10% off a purchase the day of the class. And you get to eat the end results, which were delicious! Highly recommend the classes and the store. So much better to have an organized store with a knowledgeable staff rather than the crowded, junky aisles of a discount store. read more

During 2018 and 2019 I have taken a total of six classes at the Old Orchard location. Usually just myself but also with my daughter. Loved every class! From desserts to entrees. But, after reading the review about the last-minute class cancellation (that sucks!), I will be double-checking my reservation. read more

The absolute worst customer service from Carolyn today. Never have I received such awful disrespectful service. I will never go back to this location. We have purchased so many items including chef knives from this location. Tried to ask about seeing chef knife and she treated us with such disrespect it left us speechless and we left store. I ordered a pan from Sur la Table on line. Sixteen days later, 3 phone calls to customer service, 2 emails that went unanswered and still no pan and no tracking number. Every phone call yielded a different answer to my one question which was, " when will my pan be delivered?" They're response, "I'm sorry. The vendor hadn't responded to our inquiry". Know that when you order from them, expect to wait and wait and wait. They have NO customer service. If I could rate them 0 stars I would. read more

Nice store, well-stocked (maybe a little congested in the back where it feels like they have to cram in a lot of sale inventory) and friendly, though at times a bit pushy, staff. Came in on a whim during a shopping trip at Old Orchard and walked out with a few odds and ends for my kitchen. Was greeted multiple times by the staff and offered a free coffee (not a sample, an entire cup of coffee) from the latest Nespresso machines. A Nespresso aficionado myself, I was happy to listen to the sales woman explain the nuances of the latest technology and to treat myself to a full, free, quality cup of joe. Definitely if I had the $400 to spare I'd upgrade and she was doing a good job of selling me on the benefits without being overly pushy (though my non-coffee drinking SO felt like she was being a little intense). At checkout, the cashier tried to convince me to buy additional espresso cups to match the one I was buying, even when I said I was fine, so found that to be a bit annoying. I signed up 4 of us for a cooking class (scheduled 2/18/18 at 4pm) on 1/18/18 to celebrate a friend's birthday. I paid $340.00 total. The class was Night Out: Ti Amo, Tuscany. On the day of the class another friend wanted to join, so I logged on to Sur La Table's website to see if space was available. At first I thought I might have confused the date/time since the class was no longer listed for 4pm. I called their corporate headquarters to see what was happening, they transferred my to the local store, the store was confused as to what happened and asked if they could call me back. The store called about an hour later....long story short, they say corporate cancelled the class, never noticed the store, no one ever notified me. I've taken many classes at this Skokie location, but this will be the last, since it seems like corporate thinks it's fine not to notify customers of any changes/cancellations. A simple phone call or email would have sufficed, but I guess they think it doesn't matter. They had a month to let me know, but not a word from them. read more

This place is awesome! I took a couple cooking classes at this location with chef Alison Honiotes and she was absolutely great!! She was so down to earth, friendly and answered all out questions! And not to for forget made incredibly delicious dishes for us!! One of my favorites was the Beet and Goat Cheese Napoleons with Candied Walnuts! YUM!!! And a bonus, when class is done we all got a 10% coupon that can be used for a whole week to purchase anything in the store! read more

I just had a lovely experience here. Rosi was beyond helpful and knowledgeable. I came to drop off my Nespresso pods for recycling and I ended up chatting with Rosi over a delicious complimentary espresso. I was clear about not purchasing anything this visit, and still received exemplary customer service. When it comes time to upgrade my Nespresso machine (or purchase any kitchen gear) I will be sure to return. read more

My husband, and I took a cooking class here for our anniversary. It was fun, different, delicious, and we learned a whole lot. We made paella, and a side salad. That has my mouth watering to this day. Also, we received a discount to use that day. We did some light shopping as or food cooked. This was my first cooking class ever and can't explain how disappointed I was with the lamb chops class. We weren't given any of the right ingredients. No lamb chops and no red peppers. Our chard was so unfresh and at the end my meat was raw. Would not recommend for the price. So sad. read more

What is there not to love about Sur La Table. I've been to many locations and the staff at every single one are amazing and nice. They don't hover which is also nice. We were on the fence about a pan and they helped us decide. It was very heavy (cast iron) and we still had shopping to do in the mall and they offered to hold our bag while we shopped. Came back when we were all done and it was super easy to pick it up (just had to wait in line and show our receipt and give our name). I recommend any location, even if you're not buying anything, they have so much to look at and dream about having :) read more

Just popped in today to take advantage of their "stuff a bag sale". I asked the salesman, who tells me, that this sale is not going on & besides, they don't have any totes anyway. I asked when the sale ended, he replied "today". Ok, well it's 1:30pm, so are you still offering 20% off-he says no?! Being someone who absolutely loves to cook this is probably my favorite store. It's huge, bright, well organized, and has pretty much ever cooking related item you can imagine. Additionally, the staff is incredibly helpful and super friendly. They make sure to help you find exactly what you're looking for. They also offer cooking classes and demonstrations that are super fun. And if that's not enough they usually have some delicious samples out to try. Also they allow you to actually try out some of the equipment. This morning my brother and I were killing time and stopped in here. The next thing I know we're having free cappuccino from one of their on display cappuccino makers and we're being offered chocolate cups to drink it out of. What a fun and yummy experience! Also the prices considering the quality are super reasonable and they have lots of great deals. I highly recommend this place. read more

This review is simply about an employee on the purchasing side of the business. His negative, nasty attitude had another couple besides myself and my mom to leave. There is never a reason to be rude, especially when you're in the customer service business. I understand the store was a bit busy than usual during the holiday season. But telling a customer to be "patient" and " that you're with a customer" all that while waving your finger around... no thank you. I don't need someone speaking to me as a child. read more

Great store with lots of cookware, dishes, and accessories to add to your kitchen. It gets 2 stars though because the checkout area is an absolute disaster. Be prepared to stand in line, but have other people from other lines get checked out before you (at the register you are standing at). One hot mess. read more

Extremely inflexible return policy that is anything but the hassle free returns they advertise! I returned an expensive pot 61 days after my merchandise was delivered (60 days if you count business days as the delivery to me was at 7pm after business hours). And they would not refund my money as it was outside of 60 days. Usually stores that charge as big of a mark up as Sur La Table have good return policies -- and indeed Williams Sonoma accepted my return recently with a full refund on similar timing. If you want to deal with restrictive returns, you can get a wider selection, better brand names, and *much* cheaper prices on amazon and other online retailers. read more

I really like this place better than crate and barrel. The staff are super friendly and nice and they also have cooking classes. I have yet to try them but I really like their selection of plates and other products. I bought some pretty cool modern plates that C&B did not have and also the pricing is not too outrageous compared to other stores in the area. Very disappointing. Took 7 of my relatives ($69 per) to a culinary class. Thought it would be a fun family thing to do. The only real cooking part of the class was the prep to chop up what will be used and stirring the rice. For $69 you would think that there would be enough food for everyone. There were 16 people and there were 16 pieces of brushetta, there were 16 sea scallops, there was a scoop full of the risotto and there was a small scoop of the ice cream. Main complaint was they were selling their wears the entire time, throughout the whole two hours. I would skip it and go to Chopping Block. Definitely a bit more money but it is about the cooking and learning, not about what the store sells. read more

Our cooking class was great. Scallops, risotto, green beans and cake. Good instruction and plenty of opportunities to participate. Chef was very knowledgeable. Food was excellent and there was plenty of food to share. Only negative is that there is no wine served, and you cannot bring your own wine. read more

Beware of sending gifts from this store. I sent a gift providing the company name of the individual and the suite of the business. Three week after sending the gifts I inquired if the recipient received the gift. After calling SLT I was given the delivering tracking number and when I contacted UPS was told that the company name and suite were not provided so the package was not deliverable. When trying to inform the store of its error I called 8 times, each time receiving the question "Are you still there?" after which I was disconnected. read more

We recently had a houseguest who thought it was fun to spend money unnecessarily (teenager spending her daddy's cash), and since I spent WAY too much time at malls (which I avoid like the plague) trying to make her stay with us less "boring," I thought I would at least go in ONE store that might have stuff I could use. So, anyway, after we (my two tiny ones, a teen and me) spent like 1.5 hours in the store (bathroom in store was nice), I had to ask for a metal "turner" (which I call a spatula) as they only carry like one, but there's a hundred of those crummy silicon or plastic ones (which don't work with cast iron cooking on top of a super-charged gas cooktop thank you very much). That was fine, it was even on sale, so that's great. But the checkout gal had a poopy attitude just cause I asked her a simple question which I think she had a hard time comprehending and so she just said NO. Then she was a jerk for the rest of the checkout. But whatevs! It's not like I'll EVER go back to that store :-) cause I'm at HOME, busy COOKING food, not hanging out at ridiculous malls where they have snobs as cashiers in a snobby town.
