We came into The Backyard Barbecue Store to get some rubs that you you cannot find just anywhere, specifically Meat Church and Porkmafia. The store has a huge selection. What we didn't realize was the absolutely giant variety of charcoal & gas grills and outdoor kitchens the store has. Seems that they have everything related to outdoor cooking. Many of the brands are ultra-premium. We have been cooking on the Big Green Egg exclusively, don't have a need for new gear, but it was really nice to hear about this stuff. Arriving hungry form the northwest suburbs we pleasantly surprised to find out they also SELL barbecue. It was lunchtime so we took a seat at the bar, each having a beer and a sandwich. The pulled pork and the brisket were really good. This is definitely a destination store, trip-worthy from anywhere. We will be back! read more

I can't believe that I have to tell people about this place. If you are looking for new grill equipment, classes on grilling or just some great advice this the only place to go! We have been looking to upgrade our grill for a number of years and have finally done it. I really wanted the a good looking grill area and looked many places to either custom build or have a good looking pre-made cabinet. First the custom build was out of my price range. I wanted to have the gas grill and the egg in the same unit but was not able to find any at all. I found two units that I could push together but they were really ugly. Then I went to the experts, The Backyard Barbecue Store. First they were more knowledge about the grills themselves than anyone else and they have a company that makes units just like I wanted. Bonus, they have multiple finishes for you to choose from. I stopped in a couple of times before making my final decision and they were so knowledgeable it was stunning. They were super patient with me. I am such a novice. They do classes here too. I am planning on taking one on how to use my new Big Green Egg. Mike, has already spent an hour of his time giving me some rudimentary instructions. So generous of him! First off excellent customer service! My original grill order was back ordered for a few months (which I was ok with), with the distributor always promising it's coming "next week". I waited almost a month after the promised delivery date and when the new shipment finally arrived, Dan the store manager, said my grill wasn't on that shipment. He offered me another grill, which was much better by the way, for the same cost as my original. That's what I call excellent customer service. Shout-out to the whole crew at backyard Barbecue!! I love this store. There is a great selection of grills and outdoor equipment. And the BBQ sauce, oh boy! Now they have pulled pork sandwiches on Saturday, so you can get one and a pint and watch the game. I bought a Memphis pellet grill here a few years back. It is a great grill, I love it. Had a problem with it recently with the flame diffuser, Emailed Dan and he had me a new one in a couple of days as a warranty fix. Y'all shop here please! read more

I have never set foot in the store itself, but have ordered BBQ twice during this g.d. pandemic. Both the brisket and pulled pork are excellent - not inexpensive but you get a LOT of meat, BBQ sauce, buns, coleslaw and some delicious spicy baked beans. All excellent quality. They only serve food on Fri, Sat, and Sun and the website is a little hard to figure out how to order, but do order early, as I think they often run out. read more

As most know the Backyard BBQ has been a staple in town. My husband went to an Egg class here and really enjoyed it. I grew up in the south and kind of picky about my BBQ and slaw. We have eaten lunch here a number of times. MMMMM. Wonderful BBQ. THE BEST coleslaw. I eat the chips as well. I have discovered the local BBQ Sauce, Lillie's. The beers are always rotating. So I've heard buzz about this place for years and when Christmas season came along, I finally headed up there. It didn't disappoint--amazing selection for even the most serious of BBQ addicts (like me). I ended up dropping over $200 on phenomenal gifts that nobody else in Chicagoland even carry. Great story...so after I made my purchase, they packaged everything up for me and I took my loot and headed home. When I unpacked, I realized that two boxes of fire starters (that I paid for) didn't make it into my package. By the time I called them up, they already knew the situation and were expecting my call. They immediately volunteered to UPS my missing items to me at no charge. When the package arrived, they threw in an additional box of fire starters, just because. This place is the bomb as far as grilling goes. I happened to stumble upon it in 2005 while trying to find some kind of bbq'ing gadget my husband wanted. Well... they had it! I swear, it's like Toys R Us for grillers. From the novices to the pros, this place is for you. They have everything from ALL different kinds of woodchips, to japeleno pepper holders (for making homemade poppers on the grill!) to cute napkins and plates and outdoor fireplaces. They even offer AWESOME cooking classes....everything from seafood to bbq to vegetarian. The guys that work there are VERY helpful and they make you feel like you are a friend just showing up for some advice - even if you're a girl like me. ;-) Very nice guys... I recently bought a grill here, and the service was excellent. The young man who waited on me put the Weber charcoal grill together free of charge, and then carried it out to the car for me. The only negative is that the owners are not very outgoing, and pretty much ignored me while the grill was being put together in the back. I might have bought some more items. I shop here occasionally. Until recently, no complaints. Visited recently, and felt like service was bad. It seemed like the guy felt that because I wasn't buying thousands of dollars worth of stuff, it wasn't worth his time to be civil. Granted, I was only buying small ticket items. Lot's of high end grills and smokers to choose from, while some of the grills are expensive (not overpriced, just high end) they sell Webers too and are competitively priced, the accessories are priced fairly too, but the people... are so friendly and happy to share their knowledge or outdoor cooking and that sets this stre apart from others. A great find once I found myself the proud owner of a Weber smoker. All the lump charcoal, wood chips, accessories, rubs, cookbooks, etc. that you might ever hope to find under one roof. A bit on the pricey side, but that's acceptable to me when much of what they stock is difficult to find outside of mail-order or a lengthy roadtrip. I think I caught this place on the wrong day. It came highly recommended from friends and obviously very highly rated on Yelp. I live in the city and hopped on train after work and ventured up. When I walked in I was greeted right away and mentioned that I was looking for a grill.... The response I got was "how much money you got?". I said enough to buy a grill. I was rushed through the store and shown every base model they had available. The guy explained a few of the differences between the grills but was more interested in jotting down prices on the brochure and sending me on my way. He mentioned multiple times that I should think about it, talk it over with my wife and give them a call back when I'm ready. Mentioned their hours multiple times as well. The one grill I came in to see he briefly showed me and I guess he assumed it was out of my price range and took me right back to the base model. I guess I didn't look like the normal customer in there or something, I have no idea. After seeing three or four $800 and under grills he moved on to another customer before I even knew what happened. I was standing there with a $2500 budget, ready to buy and am now going back one of the first places i shopped at. It's unfortunate, reviews here are great. Service is supposed to be second to none. We have multiple friends that bought from here multiple times. I specifically shopped everywhere else first thinking I was going to come up and buy from here. It didn't work out for me, but hey.... I am moving away and I wanted to be sure I got this done before I left. Let me start with a quick story. 4:30 on a weekday afternoon. Friends coming. Grill on the porch won't fire up. Run over desperately to this store, explain the problem, and beg them for help. He tells me they have one grill that would fit on the porch but it is a floor model. I tell him I'll buy it but it's gotta be on my porch in 30 minutes. 30 minutes later, their truck backs into the driveway, the guys carry the new grill up to the porch, swap the propane tank, and cart away the old one. Now this is definitely not the routine for them but it sure shows how much they value their customer service. Go into the store and you'll see so many grills, outdoor kitchens, pizza ovens etc and get so much detailed advice that you'll be paralyzed when the time to decide comes. This is barbecue heaven. And let's not even mention the weekend bar in the back of the store where you can get fresh grilled stuff and about a dozen beers while you browse. If you live anywhere within 50 miles of Wilmette and you're looking for a new grill or outdoor kitchen, make this your first stop. You won't need a second one. read more

I have been a customer for years and love this place. The lid on my 14 year old Weber broke this week. When I went to buy a new grill, Dan (the owner) told me the part was warranted for 25 years and Weber would probably send me the parts for free. So I went home (after buying some sauce, lump charcoal for the Green Egg, and a fish holder) to call Weber. Well what do you know! Weber is sending me a new lid. Worth a visit if you're looking for some new things to use at the grill and you want to go somewhere that actually has a lot of stuff. Sure, you could get some of it online, but the value of going here is that the salespeople can make recommendations based on your grill setup and personal preferences. The owner, Dan Marguerite, was very helpful in recommending certain products over others to me (e.g., a wok vs. a wire basket for cooking vegetables, a mop vs. a brush since the mop can be put in the dishwasher, etc). I took the Big Green Egg class at their store, which was fun, informative,--and packed to the rafters! I then purchased an "Egg" and accessories. If you've never experienced this grill, I can tell you it's the heaviest item you can imagine. The store owner and two helpers delivered it to my SECOND FLOOR porch and set everything up, which was a fete unto itself just getting it from the alley where they had to park and up all those stairs!! Recently I bought a Big Green Egg from The Backyard Barbecue Store, and I am so pleased with the smoker as well as with my experience at the store. The knowledgeable salespeople helped me with my purchase, selling me the essentials to get started without the optional accessories I can always add later. No hard sell -- just responses to my questions and preferences. Delivery and assembly were free and fast, and I got good advice on where to place the Egg and how to use it. I was even warned that there is a learning curve involved in using it, so as a newbie, I wouldn't get discouraged. Grilling is often done at the store on Saturdays, so customers can learn and sample before or after buying. Advice on where to purchase supplies other than at the store was offered, because closer locations are more convenient for me. But it was well worth the trip to The Backyard Barbecue Store for the great service and advice I received. read more
