Was by myself and signed up for the group surf lesson aka party wave. 5:1 student:instructor, full wet suit and board rental, co-ed, 1.5 hours lesson on the sand and in the water under $80. There were like 20 of us but we were spread out so it didn't feel crowded. 20% off anything too plus you get a colorful surfing diploma back at the store at the end of your lesson! :) The instructors were all very knowledgeable, positive and encouraging. The staff at the shop were awesome. I loved Mimi the instructor! Note they don't have parking (and parking in La Jolla is a pain) or a restroom so plan ahead. Have fun! read more

My review was only for its retail space and not for the school itself which seems to have a lot of positive reviews. I had to find new flip flops shoes in La Jolla as my current ones werent comfortable and killing my feet. I saw that this had a variety of sandals and came in. It had a lot of people in and out of it who were trying to rent equipment. I think that was the main focus because we had next to no service finding what would be a good option. When we finally found a good pair, I saw a few other cute trinkets to possibly buy. I realized quickly that most of cute items I saw in the Seaport Village for 30% cheaper... I get that La Jolla is an expensive area but that's quite the mark up from another tourist spot. Overall, cute spot but for the price and lack of service... I may recommend to skip this spot for buying an actual item. read more

We had an awesome experience! We were vacationing in San Diego and my son was eager to do surf lessons! This review is for the board and wetsuit rentals. My husband and I shopped around a bit, and Surf Diva had the best surf boards available. We were both able to rent legit boards of the right sizes (a long board and a fun board, which is medium size). They were not foam, they were fiberglass and proper. The wetsuits also worked for us. The shop is close to the beach, we just walked down the block and there we were! Cute shop as well, we bought some t-shirts and goodies afterward. I used to surf when I lived in SD, so I'm not interested in renting a giant foam board. Surf Diva took care of us and their prices were reasonable. I am sitting here with my fatigued core thinking this is the best and most fun workout I have ever had. While I pride myself for my above average swimming skill, trying to paddle with 20 square feet of tip-happy foam is a whole new level of awkward. This requires patient teachers and tons of encouragement from folks who help you get signed up and keep you from chickening out. Surf Diva matches this better than the best swipe right. The big difference is here they make you feel like a winner. Suck it Tinder. I am hoping to recover enough to return to enjoy both the experience of surfing and the friendly staff. Those that know me know that I take to water like a fish having grown up on a lake water skiing and swimming from the time I was a little tyke. So on a recent vacation to the coast- I thought- what the heck- I'll try my hand (foot?) at surfing. If nothing else- I'll be out in the sun and beach for an afternoon and I may find a new form of entertainment for myself. I was "amped" about the experience (sorry, I couldn't resist- I also learned a couple of new words along the way!) I did a little research and Surf Diva popped up as the perfect place to get a lesson. I love that women own it and they cater to women learning to surf although men are welcome too. The price, all in, was about $83 for an hour of instruction and came with a surfboard (good thing cuz I didn't bring one with me- Ha!) and a wet suit if you wanted it. I couldn't believe how big those surfboards were. Funny - they look smaller from a distance! You meet at the shop 30 minutes before your lesson time and then hike a ways north before getting to the spot on the beach where your lesson commences. The instructor was cool and patient. Even if I never did more than sit on the board and float in on it, it was worth the money. We learned about surf safety, popping up and paddling out. And then on to the water! Surfing is pretty basic and conceptually sounded a little like slalom water skiing with the back foot doing most the work, etc. The application? Well, let's just say I swallowed more than my fair share of the ocean that day cuz I was laughing so hard at myself! Then, for one brief moment, I got my balance, caught a wave (more like a small swell but hey-it's my story) and for that moment lived my "surfer fantasy". And then it was back to the sandy bottom again for another try. Loved the staff (surfers are not a serious group) loved the cute little store where I could buy surfing stuff (just what I need living in Chicago!), and I loved the afternoon of freedom that allowed me to try my hand at a true California sport! Got there on time to the store, they dressed her up and sent us off to meet the instructor at the beach. Easily found the instructor down at the beach. I think they purposely paired her up with an older female instructor which I liked. Watched them from shore, it looked like a great time. My mom said she really enjoyed the lesson. I NOW KNOW HOW TO SURF!!! (4.75 stars) STINGRAY SHUFFLE.... don't get stung. Researched several surf lesson venues for La Jolla Shores and was not happy with many of their rude replies to availability and customer servers. I happen to call Surf Diva and they were VERY friendly and professional. 1. Called in advance and paid for lesson for that coming weekend (must provide wetsuit size) 2. Arrived 30 minutes in advance of appointment to sign paper work 3. Met instructor at the beach (board and wet suite already there) 4. Semi-private lesson for 2 people was $160 for 1hr 5. Successful with surfing - after a few tries, i was surfing away. Some people pick it up, some not so fast. Depends on the person. FYI, helps with the instructor is there giving you a push to catch the wave. 6. After lesson, went back to the shop to rent a board for the rest of the afternoon ($10/$15 for several hours - was with the 20% discount since we had a lesson that day with Surf Diva) 7. Boo bought my wetsuit for bday gift The shop is busy, so you have to be a bit aggressive to get attention and be ready to let them know what you are there for. The walk from the shop to where they are on the beach is a bit of a distance, so be warn. They book back-to-back lessons so do expect your instructor to still be out in the waters, be patient they will get to you. SEAN was our instructor. Awesome guy, very qualified, and knows his stuff. I took in all his pointers and was able to surf on my own that day. Just a note, its alot harder catching the waves on your own then to have an instructor give you that push to catch the wave. He told me I was doing a really good job and only seen a few people surf all the way to the shore as I did and asked if I was going to continue because I was pretty good for my first time surfing. To hear that from him was pretty awesome. A professional telling a newby was encouraging. He did warn us about the stingrays but he kept it short and sweet, do the shuffle and don't get stung. Just a fair warning, La Jolla Shores has HELLA round stingrays at every step, so do be extra careful. Didn't get stung but uhm it's hours of extreme pain through your entire body. Will I be back? I would consider another lesson and if so I'd do it with Surf Diva again. Overall, great experience. JABA Approved.... Until the next review. read more

My two daughters (10 and 11) have been attending Saturday lessons for the past four months and just love them. They look forward to them each week. They also just finished a week camp and their experience could not have been better. The coaches are amazing and work really hard to make sure they are at ease. My husband and I stay during lessons and love to see how positive the vibe is. The girls have made an amazing improvement!! We moved a year ago from a town on the East Coast that was not close to the ocean so they did not feel comfortable at all with the waves. Now they just cannot get enough and have recently graduated from the foam longboard to an epoxy fish. We recently purchased the surfboards for each of them at the Surf Diva Shop and they were amazing. The price was great. It was going to be a present from Santa and we had no place to hide them, so they kept the boards until the evening of the 24th and even gave us a big red bow to decorate them with. I cannot recommend enough both the surf school and shop! read more

Surf Diva Surf School was an AMAZING experience for my 7-year old daughter. She had never surfed before and was catching waves within the first hour. We did the wetsuit rental, and she got to wear a super cute Roxy wetsuit that fit perfectly. The instructors were all amazing, mostly college-age young adults with a ton of energy. The littles thrived with all the high fives and excitement the instructors showed. The few older adults were equally fun and knowledgeable, also nurturing and kind. My daughter was totally into the surfing, but I liked seeing how the instructors included the more reluctant kiddos, taking a few minutes to appreciate sand creatures with them and gently coaxing them into the water. I absolutely loved my experience with Surf Diva Surf School. I have never been surfing before and wanted to give it a try while I was on vacation in La Jolla. I took a 2-hour private lesson with J.D. and had an absolute blast. He was very encouraging and a lot of fun to talk to. I managed to stand up on 2 or 3 waves by the end and the time absolutely flew by. I went back to the shop the next afternoon to rent a wet suit and board to go out on my own and try again. I walked to the same place that we'd surfed the day before and another Surf Diva instructor recognized me and offered to put my bag with their stuff, which I thought was so nice. It was so simple to rent the suit and board and then return them to the shop. Everyone I encountered was incredibly friendly. Surf Diva Surf School is where you want to go for Surf lessons if you are anywhere near the San Diego area, whether just visiting or even if you live there. My husband and I took a 1 1/2 hour group lesson - called a "party wave" - while we were there on vacation; we have both always wanted to learn to surf. They keep "party waves" small so that everyone gets the attention, instruction and support that they need ... there were only four of us in our group. They emphasize safety above all; they teach within a specific area of the beach and have you wear Surf Diva specific rash guards so that the lifeguards know to keep an eye out for you. Their staff, both in the stores and on the beach, are friendly and nonjudgmental. They hire only well-seasoned surfers as their instructors. In fact, I want to call out our instructor - Davo - in particular. Though I was very excited to learn, I also have an anxiety disorder. It didn't seem to matter how much I reminded myself of the facts, I still had a panic attack as soon as we entered the water. I felt very embarrassed and ashamed and disappointed. Davo didn't mis a beat. He remained calm, reassured me, validated and understood my anxiety, helped me calm, never ever forced me to go beyond what I felt capable of or afraid of and - most importantly - never gave up on me. Davo gently and patiently got me out in the water and up on that board, never wavering in his support. I felt 100% safe in Davo's hands. Thanks to him, I had the best experience I possibly could in that scenario. Thank you, Davo and Surf Diva Surf School, for such a solid and satisfying experience. While out in San Diego on business, I had the chance to fulfill a life-long dream - surfing lesson! I went out in a "party wave" group (which was a good mix of abilities, aptitudes, and also gender - it's not just for girls) and had a blast. My instructor, Shaina, was attentive, super-positive, and really supportive. We did an on-sand instructional about the ocean, waves, and then the all-important pop-up. Then we went out in two groups of 5 and had our water time - and there was a good balance of ask for help if you need it or go at your own pace. With 10 of us in such close proximity, there were a lot of moments where someone would be "going at their own pace" (but with little skill) and crash or nearly crash into someone else. It definitely felt a little crowded at times....and the groups kept meshing together. It would have been nice if we went to two different parts of the beach (as it is a huge beach and we had to walk really far to even get to the meet up place) than to have to constantly avoid everyone else. It was still awesome, a totally unreal experience, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I'm also thinking about doing their Costa Rica camp this Winter....Viva Surf Diva. read more

I was nervous on my first day but the instructors instantly made me feel like I was in a safe environment. They explained everything before we went in and were by our side the whole time. From wetsuits that the girls thought were "pretty" to an absolutely incredible instructor with Kurrant, ours kiddos got bit hard by the surfing bug! Every part of this school is great, but I gotta say we hit the jackpot with Kurrant. We've got talkative, energetic kids who are high achievers and can get discouraged easily. He was funny, warm, engaging and clearly knew what he was doing. He didn't mind their stories and he got them involved in every step of the process. He gave some great tips for me to catch some waves without too many falls. Their instructors are fantastic with kiddos and it is now one of my daughters favorite activities!
