I've been coming here since the 70s. I disappeared for 20 years to Hawaii and then Santa Cruz, but coming back to Mitches and seeing what an incredible establishment that it has become just warms my heart. Mitch is still the coolest guy on the planet and his staff is super friendly and helpful I ordered a custom David Craig Quad fish. It reminds me of the album Vesper or Christiansen's acid fish. I rode it today on really fun quick waves and I can say it's the best board I've had in 10 years It's so fast down the line I was making closeouts. And I could do round houses really clean and easy Very high-performance. But paddles like a mid length. David Craig's boards have my highest recommendation. I wish I had been coming here for 10 years to get boards better late than never. read more

Decided to stop by at my daughter's request after breakfast at Breakfast Republic next door. She lives in NYC now and wanted to buy a couple shirts to wear around the City. As a newly minted grom following La Jolla surf lessons in 1968, Mitch's was my home-away-from home. First I'd buy wax on my paperboy income, then Cadillac wheels for my homemade skateboards, and later wetsuits when they were developed for surfers. After that, I bought a blank from him for a high school bud to shape and glass It for me. Mitch had his quiet-cool vibe way back when, and good things never change. Stoked to learn he's still rockin' it on Pearl St., since I haven't lived there for decades. Side note: I was booted from the family domicile in '73 while a LJHS senior, and I got a tiny apartment with a surfer roomie behind the gas station on the corner of Pearl and LJ blvd, right next to Mitch's. Not only that, but we both worked a block or so down on Pearl at the Chicken Delight as long-haired, goateed troublemakers, so Mitch's was the in between. He tolerated us better than most. read more

I was ready to upgrade from a foamie to a hard top so I stopped by several surf shops in San Diego to check out boards. I especially wanted to see if any shops had a rental section so I could rent a similar board from their new section. I didn't want to drop a bunch of money on a new board without having an idea of how it'd feel for me. Mitch's was the only surf shop that had a super close option to rent. I was eyeing the Ellington boards so I rented a used one for a day and fell in love! Ultimately I decided to buy that kind of board. When it was the day I was ready to buy, they didn't have the exact length at this location but they called the Solana location and they had it in stock and it was a better color too. I highly recommend an ellington board if you're ready to upgrade from a foamie. I got a brand new 8ft ellington for about $600 (including fins and leash). That's ridiculously cheap for a brand new board! I did alot of hunting of used boards on craigslist etc and honestly, used boards aren't that much cheaper plus you don't often see fun boards for sale either, people are usually selling long boards or shortboards. So maybe it goes to show that surfboards keep their value very well and don't depreciate really quickly like a car. I'm so glad I got the perfect surfboard for my level. It honestly makes a difference in the water. I literally went surfing in the morning with my foamie, bought the ellington, and went surfing in the afternoon with the ellington. My boyfriend can attest that I catch more waves with the ellington- it is so much easier than a foam board! This whole time, I was being held back by my foamie. I'd say if you are consistently standing up on your foamie in white water and you can paddle out to the break, you are ready for a hard top. I was doubting if I was really ready for a hard top cause I could catch green waves with the foamie but not as consistently as white water. The hard top makes it easier to catch those green waves. I definitely would recommend this place. It's small, but has a good variety of quality clothing , skateboards, etc as well as Mitch's surfboards. Mitch's surf shop has been around a long time and for good reasons. The owner himself is often right there tasking if you need help. It's a little drive from my house but I go there at least once a year because my grandson's name is Mitch. I always buy him a T-shirt on his birthday. read more

COVID: The store is not allowing customers to shop inside the store. Instead, there is a tent and table set up outside where you can have staff bring you items that you're interested in looking at. I think this is a good safety measure for employees and customers, but unfortunately doesn't allow you to browse the store at your leisure. So, just make sure the employee brings you all the options they have in stock if you're looking for something specific. Everyone wore a mask when I went. Not sure if they're sanitizing periodically. PARKING: small parking lot in front of the shop Picked up a new FCS 9' Longboard Leash ($40), Sticky Bumps Wax ($1), and Sex Wax ($1). Quick and helpful service with fairly priced products. I've been getting my wax from Mitch since he opened the doors. His wax is always fresh and always has a pleasant bouquet. It keeps my feet stuck to my board and leaves little curly pieces on my chest hairs to show everyone, "I surf".... Some times I get a few extra packs and after leaving them in my car, my ride smells like surf wax. This has become very important to me. When I have a guest in my car, they always remark on the pleasant smell and ask, "how's the surf?" I usually don't know, but I make up a story of how I was charging gnarly peaks at the TiJuana Sloughs and haven't had chance to check Turmoil... I now leave bars in my sock drawer to give my feet that same surf smell. His t-shirts are very cool, but since I lost my wallet I've had to make my own "Mitch's Surf Shop" T's. They turned out pretty nice, sometimes I borrow my little sister's glitter glue and make them really fancy. You can strut around just about anywhere wearing a MSS T and folks will automatically know you're a Kool dude. I even see old geezers and tiny little squirts with his logo emblazoned on their cloths. Mitch is Kool ... You better get over there and get some stuff real soon! read more

I wouldn't have expected anything less from a surf shop that's been catering to local surfers since the 1960s, but this little store in La Jolla exceeded expectations. I was passing through the neighborhood after Saturday morning brunch and needed wax remover. Upon entering, I was greeted by multiple staff members. Their store is super clean, well-organized, and stocked with all the surfing gear and equipment you could ever need. The staff was super helpful in finding me the solvent and getting me on my way. I Needed fins (dafins per his request) for my 10 year old nephew's birthday gift, called to make sure they had them in the size and color I needed, they did. I went in to pick them up and the guy was super helpful, explaining fit and ways not to lose them, said they were returnable as long as they didn't get wet. Serves the community of La Jolla in a genuine and charismatic way. They have history and they have another location off of the PCH. I recommend buying a Mitch's Surf Shop T-shirt for friends and family. Just a plain t-shirt but it definitely makes a strong statement in San Diego. I can't tell you how many Mitch's T-shirts I have seen downtown at the Ballpark or cruising around Encinitas and La Jolla. I see a lot of Mitch's T-shirts at Pizza Port locations as well. Obviously a good reputation. I bought a BABY T-shirt for my girlfriend who lives up in Marina Del Rey. Her husband loves dressing their child in the simple Mitch's T-shirt. They have a new recent baby, so a Mitch's T is on its way. I bought a Mitch's Sweatshirt for my boyfriend. He likes wearing it around the house and during the winter months. Again, he likes it because of the community factor. A popular thing amongst teens too, since both of us are in the teaching business. I've been in there several times to buy sunglasses. I've been helped by the same guy twice. They are super patient, nice and not pressuring. He gave me some good advice about polarized glasses etc. He showed different styles and gave popular recommendations. I ended up buying some Electric Glasses. I love them! I sat on my other paper of Von Zipper's that I bought awhile back. I'm happy to pop in to this store and buy sunglasses. I also buy my Reef Sandals and Rainbow Sandals here. They always have a pretty well stocked supply of sandals. They have a small selection of girl clothing. I haven't bought much here, but I need to go in a little more often and check out what they have. They do have a sale rack that I should look at more since I'm pretty close by. I've talked to Mitch a couple times and he is super chill and relaxed. I don't feel that the staff here is cocky and "over the top" like some other surf shops. You actually have real surfers helping out the local community. They are knowledgeable and you will see them going to El Pescador and Wahoos. Sorry but can only give these guys two stars. Was in the Solana beach shop last Thursday looking for a new long board to move on from my 9'6 Walden that served as a solid first board. Asked the young kid for recommendations and what do I get? Attitude and lots of it. His reply? "Dude your board is an aircraft carrier and for nubes." Ah yah punk... I was a new 48 year old surfer when I bought it two years ago.. That was kinda the idea when I bought it and it's a solid starter board. Older colleague of his at least took 5 minutes to talk about the Takayama boards but really didn't seem interested in the sale. Too bad as I was keen to purchase. I've been here many times to buy t-shirts. The stuff looks cool and wears well. The materials are durable and maintain their shape and fit after many washes. Definitely grab a Mitch's surf shop t-shirt if you aren't a local. The name is recognized in many parts of the world. My most recent purchase was an Oneil wetsuit. At 6'5" I assumed finding anything that would even get close to fitting me would require custom sizing and special order. Not here. They had exactly what I needed - an XL tall and they had it in stock. It fits perfectly. If they can fit a mutant like me they can probably fit nearly anyone. Parking can be a little tough as they are located right next to El Pescador restaurant. Street parking can also be a bit tough to find depending upon the time of day. Mitch's is a classic surf shop in the La Jolla community. This surf shop is cool because a lot of actual surfers go here. The has store has loads of rad surf gear, but the store's main attractions is its large inventory of surf boards and wet suits. The staff (they're surfers, of course) are really laid back, but very knowledgeable about the store's products. I dig the location of the store because it is on La Jolla's sleepy, yet charming Pearl St and the shop is next Wahoo's fish tacos, so I can imagine the store gets a lot of traffic from surfers who enjoy a good fish taco from Wahoo's. read more

I came here looking for a wetsuit. I was referred to this shop by my cousin, who has a friend who had worked here. The staff was quick to help me by showing me the different wetsuits they had in stock. I ended up getting a 3/2 O'Neil wetsuit, which was about 144 dollars. Although it was a little pricier than what I was expecting to spend, the wetsuit was really good quality and I am happy with my purchase. They told me that they stopped carrying Body Glove in stock because of that brand's poor quality wetsuits. The girl who assisted me was very friendly and helpful (I didn't catch her name). After giving her my height and weight, she picked up the perfect wetsuit for me. After trying it on, she gave me a few tips on how to wear it comfortably. Thanks! I would definitely recommend this place. Although they only have a couple wetsuits around the 100-dollar range, their products are good quality. I plan on coming back here or to Bird's Surf Shop for my surfing stuff. read more

I had to get some solar cured resin and they had it. They have tons of other board repair/ fabricating materials too. They also had a skateboard I had been eying for a while at the lowest price I have seen, so I snatched that thang up. The staff was really helpful and friendly, not douchy at all like some other places. Ive been to a lot of other shops nearby, and these guys are it. Ill be back. read more

Hands down the best surf shop in San Diego. They sell everything you could possibly need in terms of surfing from surfing to shaping.

-My father found an old 80s style cruiser of a 1990s Bart Simpson Vehicle of destruction longboard (31" x 11") with tail guards and everything. The trucks and wheels were plastic and the bearings and screws were rusted shut. It took 3 guys to get the trucks out and an hours worth of work we basically replaced everything except the board itself. Thanks to them I got a new cruiser and paid a reasonable price for the set.The store had some light up wheels and a fairly nice selection of boards both surf and skate. The guys there are knowledgable and sociable laid back people and were willing to assist. The store had a majority of clothing but fairly balanced out with tech. Probably gonna head back for some surf gear. Awesome place to visit. read more
