My family and I make it a point to stop here and shop whenever we make the 2+ hours drive from Orange County. Although we usually have a pleasant shopping experience, this time it was very lackluster. The store wasn't busy at all. There were maybe four or five other people in the store besides us. NOT one person greeted us when we walked into the main area of the store and yet there were THREE employees all behind the counter just socializing with one another. The one time any of the four of us were even acknowledged by an employee was when my husband had merchandise in his hands. While visiting Santa Barbara, I stopped by this shop and had a very concerning experience. The price label clearly stated $2 per drink, yet I was charged $3 each when paying in cash. When I questioned it, I was told the price had increased. However, the moment I began taking photos, the explanation changed immediately. Suddenly, the price was back to $2, and instead of correcting the overcharge, I was offered an extra drink. I declined and simply asked for my $3 back. What should have been a straightforward correction turned into an uncomfortable interaction, marked by an arrogant, dismissive attitude and a complete lack of basic courtesy or accountability. There was no apology at any point. If pricing only becomes accurate when questioned, that raises serious concerns. Visitors to Santa Barbara deserve better. Located at the end of State Street at Cabrillo Blvd, and across from Stearns Wharf, it's the perfect pre-beach stop. Second time we came here to buy a surf rack and they were very knowledgeable and able to answer all our questions. After we left, we ended up coming back later that day to buy the odysea surf board. Come in here sometimes to look at used board selection. There's a 7'2" Channel Islands in the back with 2 clear creases in the deck. Have brought it up to the staff on 2 separate occasions. Most recent encounter: "Hey just FYI you have a board back there with 2 creases for $400, might want to check it out." Employee takes a look. "Could be pressures" "Dude... They're creases" "Yeah but someone might be able to get a few days out of it." Terrible service, spent over $250 and the service was terrible: Seemed to be mad working on Saturday at 5:00PM. Sucks to visit home to want to re-up on Yater gear and your home town doesn't show you love. Last time I spend this kind of money here. Surf-N-Wear was my favorite beach shop when I first moved to Santa Barbara. It had everything: Tropical scented lotions, surf wax, Saint Christophers, thousands of bikini styles, and so on! Anything a tourist could want that represented Santa Barbara was here. Over the years I've grown a little less fond of the shop as it seems many of the items I really enjoyed had disappeared and been replaced with less relevant more expensive products. However, there is still so much good about it and definitely reasons to visit. The Beach House branded clothing are actually probably the best products they sell at this store! They carry a wide variety of surfer styled beachwear for men, women, and kids all with the cute Santa Barbara Beach House logo on them. I have a mint green jacket with their name on it that I bought with my 25% off Axxess deal years ago (which is their current deal in 2017 as well) and I wear it all the time, yet it still has no show of wear and tear. I have bought bikini bottoms here from their sale rack, as that's the only way you'll really find anything below $40 a piece. I've found many gifts to give visiting Airbnb guests or family and friends coming from out of town. This is probably the only shop in town that has genuine, good quality Saint Christopher necklaces and bracelets. Their keychains and stickers are adorable and well priced. And I always try to convince myself to by a cute beach blanket but they're just a little pricey for my liking. Tourists - This is a definitely a great shop to stop in and at least check out what the local style is all about. It's also probably your best bet for high quality souvenirs and trinkets for your best buck. The staff are kind, the stock is generally loaded and organized, the fitting rooms are spacious and plentiful, and the overall experience will leave you with a smile. Parking on the other hand is a little difficult (especially with the State St construction going on) so I'd suggest parking downtown and walking or finding a spot in the Funk Zone on one of the streets there. read more

I understand you want to keep your establishment clean and prevent items being damaged. I get it..... but out of all the ways you could have handled it, you chose being passive aggressive about it and blurting out a comment in the middle of my friend and I talking while you're off restocking things... come on dude. Really needed a bathing suit, sunglasses, and flip flops -- this place was exactly what I was looking for. First of all, it looks small and quaint from the outside, but it's actually pretty big and has a real Zumiez vibe to it. The swim suit section is a great selection of brands like Billabong, and the sunglasses and shoes are quite affordable. The staff was friendly and attentive, and there's a nice little souvenir collection that's actually unique, it's not just a bunch of cheap Made-In-China toys with "Santa Barbara" printed on them, lol -- actually cool things! The really friendly check-out young uns made up for the really unfriendly vibe of the chatting brood of older male sales individuals in the back. I was there to get a pair of fins and was wandering around trying to figure out where they were. I could have asked, but usually, when shopping, it is nice to be met with a smile, and asked if one needs help locating something. I had tried to order fins online, and trying two different sizes, I thought it better to go in in person, and give the business somewhere local. It took awhile to register that the men were sales clerks. I would drive to Ventura, or just be patient with ordering online, rather than go through that experience again. The older I get, the less tolerance I have for crappy service. Super unwelcoming vibe in the back space. Snooty even. Maybe my skin was too brown, or my age too old, my attire too worn out, maybe I didnʻt smell of money. I tried to offset the elitism sort of attitude by being friendly with the checkout kids. With that said, I am happy with the fins. Will give the churn of Pele in my belly to the sea next time I use them and dig deeper with regard to what it is about this business that no longer resonates as a space I wanna support with my dollars. read more

This is the best surf shop in the area. It has everything you would ever need and the customer service is off the charts. I wasn't even looking for a beach umbrella but found this killer brand of beach umbrellas that were not only cute patterns with fun fringe but they were 100% UV protection. Couldn't get over the easy to carry bag and lightweight. I had to buy one! Now my beach set up is the most styling one on the beach. You must check them out! read more

Before our honeymoon, Matt B. owned exactly one pair of swim trunks, which he used, primarily, to shower our dog. We decided to do a little shopping, and Beach House served us well. The selection was huge, with tons of swim trunks in his size. We chose something like a dozen before retiring to the fitting room. Matt tried them all on and most of them looked great. We settled on a few pairs of varying length, pattern, color, etc. We were happy with all of them. I also made Matt get a gray short-sleeved button-down with little black polka dots. It might be the most fashionable thing he owns? He's thirty and Beach House is a surf shop, so that is probably not a good thing. Matt made great use of his suits on our honeymoon, and I was pleased with the way my new husband looked. I've been a customer of the Beach House since 1965. I've relocated several times over the years and currently live near Santa Cruz. Even though I've moved around, I still love getting down to Santa Barbara a couple times a year and always visit the beach house........that is until the pandemic. Now it's been over year. So I went online found their web site and ordered my annual Yater T-Shirt and a couple other items. Not only did they arrive on time, but they were well wrapped, included a personal thank you note, taffy and the famous Yater Sticker. Pretty cool clothes and stuff. Lots of selection and good amount of wetsuits. My only issue is that there's some younger staff and they some times can be heard saying kind of annoying stuff. I'm not the kind of person who thinks workers should be walking on eggshells around customers, but the last time I was here I heard one say "There's a dog out front!" (My dog that my mom was keeping outside) and the other goes "Kick it!"... animal abuse jokes are just the kind of thing you shouldn't be doing when the owner is right in front of you.
