I booked a session with Brett, and it was fantastic. I've been wanting to get into the sport for a year now, but my wife convinced me to get a lesson before buying a board. Super glad I did. I was able to stand up after about an hour, and I was instantly hooked. Super fun, and totally worth the money. My friends and I had a really fun time paddle boarding with the rentals we got at Urban Surf! It was about $20 for an hour which was cheaper than I expected but we definitely wish we had signed up for two hours instead because one hour felt a little rushed. The staff was very helpful and held our things while we were out and provided waterproof holders for our phones. The only thing I think they could work on is providing any advice/pointers. My 4yo went from "i hate wetsuit" (that we bought online), "it is tight and scratchy" to loving it and not wanting to take off the O'Neil one we bought (tighter) when we left the store. Highly recommended! Ian spent some time to explain board and wetsuit designs. When it was decision time, Ian encouraged me towards what he thought was the best fit for me instead of the more expensive option. That move won my returning business. The staff then continued to go above and beyond by showing me how to read surf reports. They showed me how to surf Westport and offered advice on other well known Washington breaks. Who is ready for some SUP? I have rented stand-up paddle boards from Urban Surf on multiple occasions. The rental reservations can be made online and the website is user-friendly and super easy to navigate. You can select the date and time you wish you rent, your level of experience, and they take care of the rest! At the Urban Surf shop, they have lots of different surf boards to rent as well as clothing and gear to purchase. The staff are always kind and helpful. The first time I rented from them, one of the guys helped me carry my board down to the water. One of my girlfriends had brought her own personal inflatable SUP, and the guys even came out to help her inflate her equipment. I appreciated how they went above and beyond to get us set up so we could have a great time on the water. It has been a five star rating every time for sure. You can tell that the staff are very knowledgeable and into the sports that they cater to--there's wide selection of gear and accessories for everything. My friend made a reservation for a tandem paddleboard on a very busy weekend in July (it was almost 90 degrees so everyone and their mamas were out on Lake Union..literally). We were lucky to find any reservations at all when we shopped around to rent a board. The staff were really excited for us to try the tandem out and pointed to us where we would load in the water. It's a short walk to the water (the shop is right at the intersection of Gas Works parking lot and the Burke-Gilman trail), though the board was pretty awkward/heavy for two small and short individuals to carry so it would've been awesome if they could've helped us out but it wasn't expected. It was our first time doing any paddleboarding and it was tons of fun for two hours and very decently priced--I think $30 total. I'd highly recommend getting the tandem because it probably requires less coordination and stability than a single and you and your partner can paddle together or one at a time or you can face each other on it and just hangout in the middle of the lake. read more

Why is it that young men in surf shops are invariably adorable despite their often bizarrely groomed facial hair? I suppose it's the tan and the muscles and the aura of supreme cool... Ah to be young again. But I digress. The best thing about the Urban Surf hotties is that they didn't laff at this old lady when I brought in my entourage (10-year-old kid, shorn little white dog, amused husband) and announced I wanted to learn to Kite Surf (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8zTftLV0NQ&NR=1). They were like, cooooooooolll. I left the store happy as a floaty clam with a Rush 300 Power Kite to practice with on land. It's the best way to learn, I've been assured. Here is what I love: They love their business and the sports that they cater to. They are knowledgeable and helpful. I had an SUP warranty issue and they were all over it for me. Plus they comp'd me with board from their rental fleet so I would not have to miss my paddle with my friends. SUP Rental experience was awesome I am from South Florida and race on a regular basis down home. I wanted to rent a decent Displacement Hull board and not the standard beat up surf style rental. After calling around a few shops and getting nowhere i called Urban Surf, it was where i needed to go. Eric set me up on a 14' board and gave me a nice Werner paddle to use. Max and Eric told me more than a few different 12'6 and 14 race style boards they would let me use. These guys were super friendly and very helpful. The price was right and it was about a 2 minute walk to the water. I cannot say enough good things about this shop, they took care of me and invited me to a local race the shop puts on. I just moved to town and these guys have been so helpful. I was looking for a very specific type of SUP board, and Robin emailed with me to confirm they had it and even set up a demo. He was very sweet and responsive, and when I arrived his staff was all so friendly. I'd demoed a lot of boards before, and as I'd hoped, I loved the one I picked and would definitely shop with them again. It's nice to find a shop that has a good selection. I already have my eye on the rest of the gear I want to get: wetsuits, leashes... Also, being right by Lake Union is a cool place to demo. It's a strange walk across the street, but once you get there it's easy to hop in and paddle. But quiet enough that you're not stuck in the main waterways if you don't want to be. read more

He walked me through options, price vs function, etc and I walked out with with two inflatable SUPs. I didn't feel pressured or over sold. That being said, I spent more than some of the ones available at "big box" stores. However, I believe Matt will be there if i need help/repairs/accessories and the boards fit my use case. Urban surf, I've driven by it 1000 times but never gone in! Pledged to take on kiteboarding with my cousin this winter so I needed a wetsuit. I was shopping online at first but ultimately decided that the last time I tried to purchase anything that was high end and needed fitting, the web is the last place you want to deal with different brands, sizing, even color. The inside of the store is so cool with everything you could need for your water sport activities. The staff helped me with selection, sizing, tips and tricks for cleaning and storage. I went to Urban Surf because one of my friends recommended the place to buy a onewheel board, they were really friendly, I bought my board on 3/9/2020 and after 9 days the board stopped working, went back to the store and they told me they couldn't do anything about it and had to contact onewheel directly to get it fixed or replaced, I don't understand why urban surf wouldn't exchange it if they have a 30 day warranty, this sucks because I recommended 3 friends but now they are not buying there, maybe they should come to some sort of agreement with onewheel to keep customers happy working the first 30 days. read more

Oh where to begin.... This is a review for the kite school, not the shop. AVOID THE KITE SCHOOL! First thing is first, I'm a new cancer survivor. I let the school know that it was my dream to learn how to kite board. I signed up for the season pass. Due to weather (and the fact that they overbooked people) I couldn't get a first lesson until June (I signed up in May) June passed us by because for every weekend date I had set, the weather wasn't cooperating - fair enough. But, when I finally had my first lesson, they paired me with an instructor who was "new" "had never taught at the school" "was unfamiliar with the harness" I was using. At first, we just didn't seem to hit it off, and that was fine. He wasn't super encouraging, he seemed to be annoyed that I had literally no experience, and wasn't the most patient human being when I made a mistake. "How did you do this? I don't even understand how you did this?!" He exclaimed when I didn't string the kite up right, it was only my second time after all. He would sternly correct me for the strangest things, like pumping the kite with my sandals on, told me that I had put on sun tan lotion wrong (with the palm of my hands) The first time we went into the water, he reminded me that I had forgotten some gear, thing is, he never told me what gear to bring out. And lastly, he would go out for 10 -15 minute riding sessions on my dime without much of an explanation. I would talk to a friend on the beach, see him waving me to come in the water 15 minutes later, and then yell at me saying, "I've been waiting for you while you've been talking on the beach!" I exclaimed, "Dude, I've been waiting for you to teach me while you've been out here riding and doing whatever it is that you're doing" On our second day, I had asked Jeffro (head of the school) early in the morning that maybe it would be best if I had a different instructor. He said to just give it a go today and we'll see how it goes after. I got into the water and while the kite was on me, my harness flipped up stabbing me in the stomach. That's when the instructor told me he had "never used the harness before" He jabbed it into my stomach more as he was trying to get the kite off of me in frustration. It felt like something had literally cut into me. When he finally got the kite off, he first said to go to shore and get the harness fixed, and then 180ed seconds later and said stay here as he went on another 15 minute joyride with the kite. At that point, I had had it. I went to shore in wretched pain, trying to find a competent instructor to get the harness off of me. I was hunched over, I could barely walk. It was then Jeffro approached. I told him what happened, the instructor came back to shore eventually and talked to him as well. That's when Jeffro came over with the harness, at this point, the safety mechanism was broken. What was odd about this is I didn't remember that it wasn't broken when I took it off. Either way, he seemed more irked by his harness being broken than he did about my well being. I could tell he wasn't very empathetic, my friends could too. At this point, after 2 days of this, I was weary about getting back into the water with this instructor, but I was determined to get up on that board. The rest of the day went about as bad as it had been the day before, I was definitely done working with this man. He would yell at me when I got things wrong, etc. I definitely wasn't getting this and I felt, as well as my friends who were with me, it was because I didn't have an adequate instructor. Fast forward to the next day. I email Jeffro asking again to get a different instructor. Now here's the thing, when you pay $2100 to a school up front, I expect to not have to wait 48 hours to get a reply. That was my first red flag, it happened a lot. He writes me back and says that he is going to refund me the remaining money and is going to take me off the season pass due to the events of this weekend. I ask him why? My future lessons will be more expensive, and he literally writes: "The behavior myself and others observed you display on the beach in attempt to address the issues with equipment, instructor and a seemly a sever injury from a commonly performed small action of switching the kite has caused our business to be concerned with the liability of working with you to learn an extreme sport in a extremely dynamic environment. This raises our concern in your ability to manage the intense physical requirements associated with this sport, as it often can put extreme stressors on the body." The behavior that I displayed? I got hurt because your instructor didn't do a gear check. He was an awful instructor! And physical requirements? I just beat final stage cancer! You want to talk to me about physical and mental requirements? The man literally insulted me and blamed me! It was incredible, couldn't believe it. So, I told him we were done. I paid $700 for this, never with them again. read more
