Rental property Avalon beach 3. Our experience raised significant concerns about the company's handling of an urgent safety issue and their communication processes. At approximately 6pm, we returned to the apartment and detected a strong smell of gas. We attempted to contact the emergency number provided, making repeated calls (15+) over a 24-hour period, but were unable to reach anyone. As no contact could be made, we arranged for an independent emergency gas service to attend. They arrived promptly and, as a precaution, shut off the boiler supplying four apartments after identifying a potential safety risk. We made further attempts to contact the company via phone, email, and social media, and provided multiple contact numbers (UK and US) to assist communication. We have retained records of these attempts. We did receive an email response after a delay; however, there was no immediate direct contact despite the nature of the issue. Given that this involved a potential gas leak, we would have expected the emergency contact process to function reliably and for communication to be more prompt. In our view, earlier engagement could have helped resolve the situation more quickly. We paid a total of $1,626.02 for the stay (around $406.50 per night). I felt a refund for one night would have been fair under the circumstances. After several emails, they first offered $210. I raised the issue again and mentioned I would consider a credit card chargeback, after which they added a further $162. While this brought the total refund to $372, it still fell short of what I believe was reasonable. After six emails, I decided not to pursue it further. Although the apartment looked lovely in the photos, in reality it was quite tired and worn, particularly the kitchen. SurfStyle Vacation Homes has been great to work with. They have managed our Pacific Beach Home for 5 years. Every time we show up our home looks clean and like new. They are responsive and have the best staff. Dana has been with the company since we first listed and helps us with our maintenance needs. We also love Farrah and Cassie too. Cheri is the new manager and she seems to know the SD market pricing well. Surfstyle makes sure your property is always inspected before and after each rental. This is one of the most important things as a vacation rental. They use a top notch cleaning company as well. We have a home in Winter Park, CO and we had issues with the local property management company. We asked Surfstyle to handle the property remotely and it has worked great. I hired our own cleaning company and inspector. If I had another vacation rental property I would use them again. I was surprised to see the negative reviews. Yes, they do vet guests to avoid the parties. Our home is in a quiet neighborhood and not a party atmosphere. I am happy they vet our guests. You guys are great Surfstyle! read more

We thought we were renting a Marriott property, since I went through Marriott townhomes and Villas. Unfortunately this property was "managed" by surf style. There were five of us, in a 3 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath home, for four nights. There were 3 towels in each full bath, 2 washcloths in each full bath and one hand towel in each bathroom. There were several crappy beach towels as well. I called and asked for more towels, especially washcloths, they snuck a few into the garage, and reminded me that there was a washer in the house! Are you freaking kidding me?!!! That washer barely worked, it took four hours to do two loads because the washer couldn't balance. The jetted tub didn't work properly, the ice maker in the freezer barely worked, the in house fireplace didn't work (they did tell us that upon booking), no problem there, we never wanted a fire. The people upstairs made tons of noise well after the designated 10pm quiet time. In hindsight we should've booked a couple of hotel rooms. read more

My husband made reservations.. at least we thought we made reservations at this place for 13 days this December just to find out this afternoon they canceled our reservation!!!!! A, we made the reservation on line... then we were told we had to answer questions about our visit. How many people would be sleeping and or staying at the place . We answered two ... my husband an I ... we are both in our 70's . B, we said we would be visiting our daughter and her family who live across the street from this place over the holidays. And , that our 13 and 20 year old grandchildren MAY spend a night with us ...the capacity of the place is 6 per night but we never said we would have 6 people over night ... we said one or two might stop by to visit out of the 7 relatives that would be in San Diego over this time period. So today , as I said before, they cancel the reservation... never calling us but posting this on a Friday night when they are closed all weekend. I wouldn't stay there if you paid me. Our daughter is a lawyer and our son in law is a doctor... we are not riff raff by any means and if I could give this outfit a star rating of any kind , it would be -100 to start . The place was immaculate with gorgeous views- we had two minor issues and the company sent out a handyman within an hour to fix them. Appliances all worked well, everything as described. Decided to give this company a second chance. Arrived on Sunday to the smell of gas and checked the non-operating carbon monoxide sensor that had corroded batteries in it. Messaged the company and they said the prior renters hadn't "complained about it". Was told Handyman would be out first thing next morning between 8 to 9 AM. 9 AM came and went and it wasn't until 2 PM that somebody arrived. There was a guest bedroom TV that wasn't working. The dryer door came off when opened. There was a consistently leaking faucet in the bathroom. Patio wasn't leveled correctly so water pools away from the drain and my toddler slipped and fell. Management team is nearly impossible to get ahold of by phone. Never again will we use this company and I would highly advise anybody else not to either. Negligence is an understatement. Husband caught it and out in a dirty baggie that was in one of the kitchen drawers. Had to find a last minute hotel. Said they would refund, only when I called my credit card company. said the "pest control" found no evidence of bed bugs! Even though we will get a refund it's shameful that they will let the next unsuspecting family come in and potentially bring bedbugs back to their home. Do not rent from this agency. They are unresponsive, uncaring, and ultimately belligerent when called on their misrepresentation of their rentals. We had the misfortune to rent from them, had to leave early because the interior of the property (whose deck is featured on the front of their website - Encinitas) was filled with black mold, broken window seals, rusted and dirty furniture and window treatments, disintegrating bedding, general filth and disrepair. This company is very hard to communicate with. You have to text and call them multiple times to get a reply. They sent me the wrong code to check in and then admitted to me via email that their system often releases the wrong code. We had an issue with the Internet working and I followed all the instructions to fix it. It took 2+ days to come out and fix it. The location is very loud and it's not because of the construction that they mention. I asked them for a refund because of multiple issues within the reservation. They told me that this was threatening and they also hid my review on their website. It's not fair for them to hide the details of the difficulties i experienced with them. I don't care at this point if I get a refund, I just want people to know that they are not someone that should be used and they have very poor customer service. I was tricked into renting a home I found on AIRBNB, but Surf Style Vacation Homes (SSVH) broke EVERY host's "Terms of Service"... and fraudulently took me to THEIR website to "confirm my reservation" and "make my payment". I NEVER had a trip in the Airbnb system. :( I'm going to try to put this company out of business. CA Better Business Bureau here I come. Ya'll messed with the wrong lady. I was on Airbnb's website... RENTING AN AIRBNB... I WOULD NEVER RENT FROM A RANDOM "VACATION HOMES" RENTAL COMPANY. Yet, SSVH KNEW they were leading me AWAY from the Airbnb site... as they are greedy as hell and wanted to keep all costs/fees to themselves as if Airbnb is their personal "look at what you can get" then "we're not going to pay them anything for promoting my shitcan of a house." This is fraud. First, by leading me AWAY from the Airbnb website to begin corresponding with me. Rule #1 for Hosts - ALL communication to the Renter is to happen through Airbnb's messaging system. Upon arrival, I went through the house, as suggested, to make sure everything was safe and in working order (plus, I didn't want to be blamed for any of that nonsense). 1st a ground floor sliding door was unlocked ("Oops, it must have been a housekeeper who forgot to lock it"), the ground floor window (which opens to the busy sidewalk/street) and INTO THE SHOWER, had NO HARDWARE to close or lock the window! ANYONE could have entered the house through this window. Their handyman came and "pushed it closed, so no one could open it unless we pushed it open"... WELL, OR ANYONE ON THE STREET WITH A FLATHEAD SCREWDRIVER! I was promised it would be replaced immediately... well, isn't that great for the next renter. Three windowpanes were broken, but don't worry! They were secured with clear packing tape! ALL of the windows in the house had corroded handles and windowsills had massive wood rot. Never been so sketched out with such a dirty, bug infested, musty smelling, ridiculously expensive beat up rental (in Encinitas CA). Urine stains on mattress covers & filthy grime in kitchen utensil drawers. Old stained marble counters, outside everything rusty & covered with cobwebs, broken main door frame & 25 year old clothes dryer. We missed the NO-airconditioner in the description and it was oven-like 88 degrees every day in the house with moderate outdoor temps, not heat wave temps: overall incredibly uncomfortable. The separate upper bedroom temp easily registered in the mid 90's and had no openable front windows for an ocean cross breeze to cool it. Have Never spent so much $ and had a less responsive rental management company. When we called about sugar ants in the kitchen & carpenter ants in lower level we got an email telling us to look under the sink for raid bug spray (there was none) & they refused to send exterminator. I hope the owners of these vacation homes and any future renters know how UNPROFESSIONAL and UNRESPONSIVE this company is. They held my VRBO reservation in Pending status for almost two days just one day out from the trip that would have required flights and rental car for my family. For two days I emailed, text and called multiple times and numbers, including their so called "Emergency number" to ask them to confirm or cancel my request so I can make plans accordingly. They held my vacation hostage in limbo without any response. I could not cancel, make another reservation or confirm my travel plans. Long story short - Made a reservation for Mission Beach 2024, completed the extra information about our group that was requested by the owner, received a confirmation email that we had been confirmed at the price we were quoted, they charged my credit card for 50% of the rental. The next day received an email that they were cancelling our reservation due the "homeowner not finalizing the pricing for next summer". They would not honor the price that was quoted and confirmed - if I wanted the unit it would be at the new higher pricing. Took several days to process the refund for the deposit they charged on the day of booking. I have asked for someone to call me and 4 days later no phone just an email stating that my refund has been processed. Well this happened. I'm nearly speechless. I reserved an oceanfront house in Mission Beach for a week next August from Surf Style on VRBO two days ago. I frequently use VRBO and I've never had a problem with a reservation or stay, including my reservation for another Surf Style home in the summer of 2021. Today, they unilaterally cancelled my reservation I placed on Saturday, accusing me of trying to violate their terms of service for a reservation 8 months away. Why would they do that you ask? I go to San Diego to visit family who live there and enjoy Mission Beach. When I stay at a beach house, my local family members come to visit me at the beach. On the public beach in front of the house. I very clearly stated that I would not be hosting any gatherings, parties, dinners, or anyone in this beach house. So I answered one of their questions about potential visitors and answered honestly that people in my family come to visit me ON THE PUBLIC BEACH IN FRONT OF THE HOUSE. Keep in mind that this house accommodates at least 6-8 people and there are only 4 (literally only 4) people staying there. So according to Surf Style, my family members coming to visit me on the public beach in front of the house is a deal breaker, and violates their terms of service. Seriously this just happened to me today. No phone conversation to work things out, no follow up questions for clarity, nothing. Just a mean spirited sorry you are cancelled. So this is who you are dealing with. Even if you have used Surf Style in the past, like I did in summer 2021, do not expect that they will try to help you out. There are many other companies in San Diego leasing vacation homes who really care about customer service. I urge you to try one of them. If Surf Style is willing to torch my reservation like this, after I've already been their customer, imagine how they might handle something important to you on your vacation. read more

My group and I felt very discriminated against as we were told no houses they managed would ever consider an adult only group. Most of our ages are over 40 with some people in their 30's. They would not provide any thorough explanation as to what it is required to meet their "age requirement" other than that everyone must be at least 30 years old...which we are. They would not respond to any emails sent after their initial response and ended up hurrying me off the phone, and basically hanging up on me. I rented from them a year ago and had a nice time and they were helpful, but something must have really changed as their service really dropped off. Do not book with this company! Our family had gifted my mom a 4 day vacation for her 70th birthday in one of their ocean front properties 5 months in advance. We received a notice 2 weeks prior to our trip telling us the reservation had been cancelled. Apparently the house we reserved had actually been on the market for sale prior to us booking the reservation, without our knowledge. Once the seller had accepted an offer to sell the property, they then cancelled all the reservations that had been booked for the property. Surf Style did absolutely nothing to help in the matter...very poor management of the whole situation. We then had less than two weeks to scramble and find a place, with very few options... we ended up with a much less desirable property at a higher price. I am incredibly disappointed in the way they chose to deny me service for my honesty. I told them when I asked to book that I was planning a relaxing woman's retreat for a bride and her bridesmaids. I told them many times, this was NOT a party, it was a relaxing weekend in the middle of winter in San Diego. I was willing to spend over $5000 for this rental, but I was denied for the "potential for bachelorette celebration." There was zero consideration of my original message in which I addressed these issues and they offered me no chance to clarify or answer questions. This was literally going to be seven 30something year olds watching movies, eating Mexican food, and drinking wine. With two days to go for our son's Marine graduation, after already booking and paying for one of their homes, they canceled our trip. I answered their questions that there would be no parties or events at the rented house, it was just a place to stay while we attended the Marine graduation ceremonies on government properties. We rented a condo by the beach and nearly every appliance didn't work and the iron board was broken in half!! The area was great though!!

SurfStyle service was like that of a slumlord. We rented a condo in San Diego that was without A/C during our 4-day stay. Moments before we arrived on Saturday, this company disconnected the fuse to the A/C because it was making a loud noise inside the condo but not cooling. The fuse controls the circuit to the TV and fridge as well. I didn't know that and they didn't tell me until I communicated with Maintenance the next day. Maintenance texted instructions to me on how to turn the fuse back on so we had a fridge. We had to listen to the obnoxious sound from the broken A/C through the nights in order to keep the fridge working. The condo was hot from 10am-10pm. SurfStyle emailed that the A/C would be repaired on Monday, three days after we arrived. On Monday, I got an email from them stating the repair will be on Tuesday, the day I checked out. This company knew about the broken A/C before we arrived. They didn't tell us ahead of time or make any other arrangements for us. No apology nor any empathy. They only communicated thru email and text. I found them through VRBO, believing they were vetted by VRBO. I even read reviews about SurfStyle on VRBO that were 95% positive. Lesson learned: I should have checked Yelp first. They don't have any selfish interest and it's driven by the consumers. read more

Our full family (8 adults, 2 teens and a baby) had a lovely week at this facility. There was great parking, well-equipped kitchens, comfortable beds and a great location. Lots of nearby eateries and amenities and only a block from a great beach. If we can get everyone back together again this will be a perfect place to revisit. read more

Felt violated and interrogated when trying to book a 14k dollar rental with this company for a family vacation. After replying to their original questions as to "our purpose for vacation" they sent back an email stating that our reason to "vacation" simply to spend time with family wasn't good enough. They asked the ages of everyone staying and I told them it was 2 young children and then rest adult and they were not content with this answer either. When a request was resubmitted, the dates we had chosen were blocked out. No other dates work for our group so unfortunately this company has lost our business. THE WORST!!! I paid nearly 5k to spend a week here. It was my husbands 50th birthday plus I had a tradeshow at the San Diego convention center. They advertise that you can fit a range rover in here... But they didn't specify a tiny range Rover. In addition to that where we're supposed to park there are two cars right next to each other blocking the front of the stairway. Impossible for me to pass through let alone bring luggage or cooler through. It was late so there were a lot of homeless people scattered around the area and I was just trying to get to our unit. I could not... I myself went through but there was no way I could bring our luggage through. So what I had to do between 12 AM and 3 AM is search for a hotel in San Diego during a convention with my children and a tiny dog. It was impossible but I finally found a place at 3:30 in the morning an hour away from the convention center. When I shared this information with their team I'm so sorry you had to go through that and I'm sure that was rough... But I'm still not getting my money back. Yes idiots, I wanted to drive around for three hours in the middle night to a hotel because I didn't want to go to their apartment because it was dirty. They kept on telling me we checked in before and it was clean... You're missing the point people, yes your unit smelled badly but I could not move in because cars were blocking me from bringing up my luggage plus my car did not fit in the garage. Then they said those peoplethey shouldn't have parked there... I went back and I looked at the parking again took a picture and that's assigned parking. They did not give any instruction at all how to get to the apartment they're telling me I should've walked around the building to the front and looked for an entrance in the dark with the homeless people there with my family. I am getting an attorney because they're thieves and an invite all of you who have also given them one star to join me in a class action suit... Surf Style Team is not a rental company I would ever use again. They were incredibly difficult to work with when the pandemic and travel restrictions were put in place in 2020 and did not adhere to AirBnB policies. We tried to be flexible with them and they would not return any money when our daughter got COVID. read more

We rented Treasure Villa on Mission Bay through Surf Style Rentals. It's a magnificent OLD home right on the bay. There are some good upgrades like the great room furniture and television but oh my! so many things - that would be totally easily fixed - were wrong. The worst was the hot tub - full of sand and wouldn't heat. Talked to Surf Style the first day and they assured us it is CLEANED weekly. By the 4th day it was up and running after 3 visits by a team of hot tub professionals. They said it hadn't been cleaned in ages - the sand in the filter made it unable to heat. They gave us 10% of our rent for those 4 days.....does not make up for disappointment and outright deceit about it's cleanliness. Oh but wait: three cooking pots in kitchen for a house that can have 15 guests? Filthy burned oven mitts, refrigerator that wouldn't make ice and had all the shelves broken on door, tiles missing on the floor, leaving sharp edges, tattered pillows and umbrellas outside, dog poop all over the run along the side of the house, dishwasher missing a roller so it almost broke the dishes banging in and out each time, broken hair dryer, bikes in disrepair. Upon having to deal with all of this they gave us back our cleaning fee of: $450!! We had asked for 1 night free and they wouldn't go the next $400 but most disturbing they wouldn't let us review the house. So, all the reviews there are only the good reviews.....it's a shame as the house has a lot going for it, but Surf Style needs to be more honest with the shortcomings. I am also contacting the Better Business bureau to see if there is perhaps a fraudulent aspect of them not allowing us to review. That's all! The management company has a set of strict, but understandable policies in place. The policies honestly are reasonable (no outside noise past 10pm, max capacity enforced, etc). That said, I highly recommend you are very careful in how you respond to their 'screening questions' should you decide to rent with this group. We fit all criteria and agreed to all of their policies but because I said "don't anticipate" and "not loud" in my responses, they decided there was a risk I wouldn't follow their policies - even though I had agreed to follow them. They cancelled my reservations based on semantics and the wording I used when AGREEING to their policies. FAIR WARNING to anyone who proceeds with this company - just give "yes"/"no" answers to their screening questions and don't provide additional detail or you may be subject to cancellation for using the wrong word choice. They were not open to discussing or allowing me to update my responses. Very disappointed. read more

Rented an expensive home in Encinitas. Home itself was beautiful location but needed some serious updates. Appliances with the exception of fridge were garbage. Place was NOT clean. All the window sills and doors trims were full of dirt. They basically surface clean and that's it. The closets all had stuff just thrown in them. I would not rent with Surf Style again because they either don't require these owners to keep their homes updated or have a decent cleaning crew. Really disappointed for the money spent. Place felt grungy. Pictures can be deceiving. I find it hard to believe not one of the reviews on this home was negative which leads me to believe those are not posted. I'm fussy but I know there are folks much pickier than me. Again, place just dated and dirty. They rely on the previous renters to wash all the dishes etc and put them back. Very unprofessional company who clearly has an audience/type of group they're looking to rent to. My family and friends wanted a quiet, relaxing trip to SD and we were declined a chance to rent their home on the beach due to the potential of being over the limit of 8 adults over 30 when we were traveling with 7. Their listing states they're a 10 person house, but of course you need to dig deeper and see it's 8 adults plus 2 kids allowed. We were going to travel with 7 people regardless and thought we were good, but since we had 2 friends in SD and I told them (Surf Style) that they might POSSIBLY stop by our rental, they declined us. My recommendation - stay away from this company, or just lie on their ridiculous questionnaire they send out before confirming your rental with them. Absolutely ridiculous, in my 6+ years renting airbnbs I have never been declined until now. Best part - the office I spoke with didn't even know how to help. Again, stay away. read more
