Tonight will be our third night here at the Surfcomber, and I have to say I am very pleased. In my experience, hotels on the water can be hit or miss. The Surfcomber is all hit! The feel of the beach stays of my childhood, but clean, and neat as a pin, no musty smell, and with a lovely little beach just outside. We stayed in room 16 which has an excellent view with 2 chairs on the shared 2nd floor balcony - not ocean front, but 'ocean enough'! Clean and neat, the bathroom fixtures are freshly updated and beds firm. Carpeting is indoor-outdoor, and clean. Free mini fridge, wifi, cable, and a phone for local calls along with a K-cup machine for that first morning cup of coffee complete the space. There's a pool and shuffleboard along with an outdoor seating area overlooking the sound, with stairs down to the water. Lovely! This was not my first choice, but it's an excellent one and I am glad we came!

Actual view for their false advertisement of beach bedroom view.

We have stayed at this location before and enjoyed it. This was supposed to be a 10 day stay, and…read morelet me start by saying, by day 3, we had checked out of this hotel. We checked in and went to our assigned room. We quickly discovered the room to be quite filthy. There was long black hair everywhere. On the countertops, in the bathtub, on the tile floor where the kitchen sick was, and even large clumps under the vanity sink. I immediately went to the front desk and spoke to the GM "Elissa." She was very apologetic and sent a housekeeper down shortly after. The housekeeper visited our room to "re-clean" it, and once she left, there was still hair all over the place. I didn't want to complain to the front desk for a second time, so I did the best I could by washing some of those surfaces myself. Unfortunately, it didnt end there. We went to the the breakfast buffet all three days between 8 and 8:30. It was atrocious. It was very overcrowded and items were not replenished once empty. There was only one working waffle maker that left many people waiting 8-10 people deep in line. Juice machine was "out of order" with no alternative offered other than coffee and tea. Oatmeal was empty. Milk was empty. Cereal container was empty. It was just downright awful. Ive never had this type of experience at any hotel breakfast. There were two restrooms across from the dining area that were BOTH "out of order" the entirety of our stay. So basically the only available restroom was the one in our room. Housekeeping services are supposed to be started on day two of guests stays. Our mounted shower gel was empty. I went to the front desk at 10am asking for a replacement. I waited around all day. Nobody came. I texted the front desk around 3PM asking if we had been forgotten about and was told someone would be down in 5 minutes. Another hour and a half went by, and it was finally delivered to our door at 5PM.... Housekeeper never entered the room. Thats all that was done. Our trashes remained overflowing. Our shampoo and conditioner were empty shorly after. No fresh towels were delivered. It was just bad. The worst part, which forced us to leave early was the discomfort in the beds. I can't even begin to explain how uncomfortable the beds in our room were. The pull out sleeper was like sleeping on straight mattress springs. It left my daughter with severe neck and shoulder pain. The king size bed was just as bad. My husband and I couldn't sleep at all because the bed was so uncomfortable. We tossed and turned all night long and woke up with neck, back, and hip pain. On day two of our stay, I also noticed tiny black ants on the wall next to our bed, and two of them IN our bed. We couldn't take it anymore, so we checked out of the hotel after just 3 short, painfully agonizing days. We spoke to the GM again and explained why we had to leave. She was apologetic but did not offer to compensate any part of our stay. It was by far the most disappointing vacations ever. We had looked forward to this vacation for months to be seriously disappointed. Would not recommend this hotel. Look elsewhere.

So at 7:55 we received a text stating the lobby was closing at 8:00 and our keys were in the mailbox. I was super uncomfortable with this, as anyone had access to the mailbox and our room # was written right on the envelope. But luckily we arrived just 10-15 minutes later. Upon arriving to our room, as soon as I moved a throw pillow from the bed, a big flew out and landed on the blanket. Just seconds later my mother noticed another bug on the bed frame of her bed. We called the main fence number and minutes later he arrived, and showed us to a different room. Before putting our stuff down, we checked out this new rom to ensure there were no bugs but sure enough- 3 dead bugs... one on the bed frame and 2 on the ground. The workers response: "the vacuum can't reach the entire area around the bed." We then called for a manager and reported to the lobby, where we expected a refund. We then spent 1.5 hours in the lobby waiting for ANYTHING to happen. The manager on the phone said she had left for the night and was not returning and the other manager was "off site". The two main maintenance men trying to "help" (very rudely!) attempted a refund, but ended up refunding me only 1 cent instead of the over $1000 I had already paid. We called corporate the next day and dealt with them for over an hour. Luckily the corporate manager Chris was very helpful, and did give us a voucher and a refund. However the refund was via a mailed check, so I had to wait almost 10 days to receive it. Overall, it was an awful experience. This place could be great... awesome location, rooms looked nice, etc. but they have a lot of work to do as a business.

There is nothing luxury about it. They claim the rooms are redone, but that is laughable. The loft room was large, but that was the only thing it had going for it. The rug was frayed near the sliders, the walls were scratched up, the kitchenette was tiny and pathetic, and the bathroom looked neglected. The tub had exposed holes where the safety pole was missing, which is completely unacceptable. The ceiling fan looked like it was ready to fall off the ceiling. The common areas were disgusting. Dirty stairwells, dirty hallways, steep stairs going up to the second floor rooms, and an overall grimy, worn out feeling everywhere. For the money they are gouging out of customers, this property should be spotless and updated. Instead, it feels tired, neglected, and badly managed. The staff was no better. At a 4:30 PM check in, they told me my room was not ready. Then a manager had to come over and correct the mistake. So not only is the place overpriced and rundown, but the staff does not even seem to know what is going on. The location is the only decent thing about Ocean Mist, and even that does not come close to saving it. The beach is small and unimpressive, and the outdoor pool is basically the size of a kiddie pool. Calling this a resort is a stretch. Calling it luxury is flat out insulting. For what they charged for a loft room, I could have rented an entire house and had a far better experience. Ocean Mist is an overpriced joke. They are charging outrageous money for a dated, dirty, poorly maintained property that does not come close to matching the price tag. Never again.

The location is beautiful, but unfortunately our experience with the resort itself was…read moredisappointing enough that we won't return. The biggest source of frustration was trying to get food. At check-in we were told both resorts had restaurants and beach bars, which made it sound like there would be plenty of options. In reality, it was difficult to know what would be open or serving food at any given time. We couldn't find consistent hours on the website or in our check-in materials, and even employees often seemed unsure. The Riviera café was essentially grab-and-go. We used it for breakfast, but typically only one or two menu items were actually available and they were premade and reheated. The coffee options were good, though. We tried going there for lunch after discovering Jonah's was closed and found premade salads and leftover breakfast sandwiches. The employees actually directed us to Jonah's and seemed surprised when we told them it was closed. The beach bar was the most consistent food option, but choices were limited and mostly fried/heavy. At Jonah's, we waited more than an hour for four salads one evening and about 45 minutes for two salads and a pizza another. Places were frequently out of menu items or ingredients, and the beach bar was even completely out of silverware at one point. Unfortunately, the property also felt very worn. Our bathtub was rusty and had peeling paint, the bathroom door barely closed, our TV had a black line running through the screen, and our balcony railing felt loose enough to make us uncomfortable. Carpeting throughout the property looked worn and dirty. An ice machine was broken for our entire stay, the beach foot sprayer was broken, and many interior doors were warped from humidity. The heated pools were still quite cold, while the hot tub was almost unbearably hot. Housekeeping was another issue. Our room wasn't serviced until day three, after I contacted the front desk and asked for service. When they agreed to provide full service, we left the room so they could work. When we returned, the beds had simply been made with the existing sheets rather than having the sheets changed. Staff presence was inconsistent as well. People generally weren't particularly friendly or welcoming and often seemed unaware of what was happening elsewhere at the resort. Beach attendant coverage was unpredictable enough that at one point I grabbed the sand drill myself and installed our umbrella. There were positives. Our room had lots of convenient places to charge devices, which was surprisingly nice. More importantly, the private beach is gorgeous. It's easily accessible and the ocean views are fantastic. We paid for an ocean-view room, and I'm very glad we did because sitting outside and enjoying that view genuinely made the stay better. The location gives this property tremendous potential. Unfortunately, the maintenance issues, inconsistent housekeeping, confusing food availability, and lack of attentive service made it feel like the resort simply isn't being operated at the level its location deserves.
