We enjoyed having our 4.5 month old son visit with Dr. Winston and we plan to visit in the future as needed. Although Dr. Winston said he supports the entire vaccine schedule (even before recent deletions), he did not pressure us into injecting our very healthy son with shots that may very well do more harm than good. read more

Surfside is fine this is mostly about Dr. White. When I was 20, I went to Dr. White about my anxiety and asked him about some drugs I had done research on. I had daily panic attacks and (unbeknownst to me) raging OCD. Dr. White ignored my concerns and medication questions. Instead, he told me to "just take a shot or two of vodka when you feel that way." Well, I was 20 and had enough sanity to know that was crazier than the panic attacks. Luckily, I aged out of his care soon after. It's been a few years and while it makes me laugh to think how absurd and unhealthy that recommendation was, I think it's important for other people to know who's hands their putting their kids in. Our family has been with Dr. Lowen for the past eight years, and I can't imagine a more thoughtful, compassionate, and thorough pediatrician. She has cared for our kids through every season of childhood, and every single visit feels personal and unrushed. She listens deeply, asks the right questions, and truly sees our kids. We always leave feeling understood, supported, and cared for. As parents, we feel incredibly fortunate to have her guiding their care. She balances medical expertise with warmth in a way that is rare and so appreciated. The only sad part is knowing that once they reach adulthood, they will have to move on to an adult practice. If we could keep her forever, we would! I recommend Dr. Lowen and Coastal Kids wholeheartedly to any family. It's impossible to get ahold of anyone I'm here. I've emailed 3 times and called multiple. By chance, someone finally answered and the reception was extremely rude. She cut me off and started talking to a coworker while we were on the phone together (to chat about her lunch plans!). I asked very basic questions and she made sure to respond to each with dramatic exhales and continued annoyed attitude. Went here because so many people recommended them. And I didn't know better as a new mom. Come to find out Dr. white is only in the office rarely and hard to schedule with so my son had Dr.Lowen. I was told to research things when I asked her questions, I told her I was having breastfeeding issues and she never recommended or asked about it. The new parent resource center recommended I get my son referred to an ENT about possible tongue tie and after mentioning it twice (2 different appointments)to Dr lowen she finally put in the referral and I hadn't heard anything in weeks so I called Surfside pediatrics and the office staff spit out the specialist information and I said "so it was approved?" And they told me yes but when I asked why no one called me they didn't have an answer. I scheduled with the specialist and the day I went in they never got the referral from Surfside and I almost had to reschedule after driving to Thousand Oaks with a newborn. After trying Surfside for a few months I didn't feel supported as a new mom, they gave me surprised bills and didn't take copays at the time of the appointments and when I switched to a new doctor and facility the new doctors office called Surfside 3 times to get my sons records before his first appointment or else I would have had to cancel, I had to go in and physically get the records! read more

Staff is incompetent and honestly just seem lazy. They have no clue about billing, they lie to you on the phone about insurance (or again perhaps are just very incompetent and don't even understand insurances), and yes as others have commented they don't tell you up front what the out of pocket costs are. And they don't take poor people insurance - I lost my fancy insurance due to a high risk pregnancy and not being able to work - so they won't see my child now. I just can't imagine being a doctor that would turn away a child... it's like the exact opposite of 'do no harm'.. they only care about money at this place.. read more

I took my son to his newborn appointment, he got the RSV shot and everything worked great and at the receptionist desk they said they would cover the visit since we don't have any insurance yet, the insurance is supposed to cover the first 30 days for my newborn, so we thought we had nothing to worry about then. Took him to his 1 month appointment, they decided to tell us there before I had left that we have to pay $650 from that last appointment and then cutting me off whenever I tried to speak. My husband and I are very pissed off with them. Trying to get all that money out of us when we can't even afford it and also how the economy is looking right now. Horrible experience with the reception desk. My son had an appointment to get a vaccination shot. We were delayed on our way to the appointment and arrived a few min late. We were told that we would have to reschedule our appointment for next week. This felt very punitive and arbitrary and as thought the reception was having a bad day. read more

I felt talked down to and shamed by Dr. White. This is my first child, less than a week old, and the Dr. didn't even evaluate my son. Instead I was shamed for having my son circumsized "right away at the hospital". He told me I needed to wait and have him do the procedure. Was told that that was my first mistake. When we discussed feedings, I told him my son currently does not latch. I was making an appointment with a lactation consultant. I'm currently pumping and bottle feeding breastmilk after each try with breastfeeding. He proceeded to tell me I have ruined his feeding routine and to never give him a bottle again. I explained I was in a lot of pain and needed a break, and my son wasnt eating at all if I did not give him a bottle. He told me I need to let him go hungry, and that he would eventually be hungry enough to learn to latch properly. My child was born during the heat wave. We don't have a/c and we're living in a home that was 90+ degrees day in and day out. My son's temp was consistently 100+ degrees all day because it was so hot in our home. But I'm supposed to let a newborn bake in the heat and starve, no fluids? I'm sorry, but I will not let my child go hungry, or dehydrate because one doctor says I cannot give him a bottle. Went to a new pediatrician, and low and behold- she understood my situation and supported me, she looked at his ears, his eyes, listened to his heart, etc. Dr. White just looked at my son's circumcision and then said "see you in two weeks" and walked out the room. read more

Dr Winston is the absolute BEST! I cannot say enough great things about him. We welcomed our first son and are new the whole parenting world. Every visit we had with him he took the time to answer all of our questions and concerns, told us changes that we will likely see from our baby by the next visit & made it a point to check on me, the Mom, and see how I was doing and coping with this huge change. No visit was ever rushed and he took the time to make sure we felt comfortable and had the confidence needed as being new parents. He never pressured us into any vaccinations if we weren't ready yet and these conversations were always a fair discussion. He let us do our research and make the decision when we were ready to. He even made house calls to check in on us when I was having milk supply issues. He helped take the pressure off of myself and gave us formula we could use in the interim. He truly is a wonderful person and Doctor. He goes above and beyond and truly made those beginning tough months so much better for all of us. My children are patients of Dr. Lowen and where happy with her. My daughter had a physical scheduled last week but with everything going on I figured they'd call me to reschedule. I can't imagine my doctor wanting me to bring my child in for a routine visit and unnecessarily expose them to anything out there. But to my surprise they wanted me to still bring her in. I refused and when I asked for their reasoning, I was informed by the young lady that Dr. White still wanted to see full schedule of patients which I though was not the best idea considering the pandemic we're in. Needless to say- I refused and canceled. To add to my disappointment- I am a Patient of Dr. Ulrich's who happens to be in the suite downstairs. I unfortunately had to come in to get tested for COVID-19 through their drive through. While I was getting swabbed the nurse and I noticed one of Surfside's employees recording us. I was appalled! I can't believe that a medical professional would behave in such a manner! The nurse informed me that Dr White had tried to keep them from offering this service and helping our community. During this time of need, I have seen so many people come together but I was VERY disappointed to hear that my pediatrician's office wasn't onboard with helping and was in fact trying to sabotage those who are willing to help! As if that wasn't bad enough- i was informed, they have been uploading these videos to social media. SHAME ON YOU SURFSIDE! you've lost my children as patients. read more

After having to leave Surfside to go to Kaiser, we were thrilled to be able to return to Surfside. That is until we had two very disappointing appointments with Dr. White. Disappointing in the sense that Dr. White displayed a complete lack of professionalism and a complete lack of awareness has to how the "advice" may be received. Let me explain. The display of unprofessionalism came when Dr. White felt it was appropriate to use swear words during my son's visit. Maybe he was trying to relate, appear cool to a young teen, but hardly behavior I would expect from my child's doctor. The complete lack of awareness came during our most recent visit when Dr. White not only implied that his professional opinion meant he cared more about my child's health than I did due to a decision I was making that he did not agree with. But he also would not stop telling me how vitally important it is that children be involved in organized sports. He came back to this topic no less than three times during our visit. Okay. So, you feel that it is important. Got it. However, has Dr. White ever stopped to think about how that advice may be received by a single parent who cannot afford organized sports? What about if the child has zero interest in organized sports but does other activities? What if other family circumstances made organized sports difficult? The fact that he would not let it go was so annoying. When I brought up the fact that my child rides bikes, plays basketball, goes swimming (all recreationally) Dr. White declared that simply was not sufficient. Even when combined with 80 minutes of PE 3x a week....nope, not sufficient. Organized sports are the only way! The saddest part is that Dr. White's overall demeanor was that I the parent should of course listen to him the doctor. Why wouldn't I? He's a DOCTOR! Hello steamroller, have you met this parent? We think nothing of them and simply tell them what to do, how to raise their child, and do not care if they have an opinion or information. Yuck. We have been with Surfside for years, and will not be returning. I prefer to have a pediatrician who actually partners with me, talks with me, not at me and who chooses to listen rather than hear himself speak. read more

Absolutely love Surfside! My son is one and has been going here since his first check up. I'm a huge worry wort and they always make me feel comfortable when calling with questions or wanting my son to be seen at any time. Dr. White is amazing! He goes above and beyond, and never makes you feel silly or that your concerns aren't merited. He takes the time to answer every question with great detail. The staff is beyond kind and friendly, they are personal and organized. They also have an after hours service which is a great resource and I've used multiple times. In times where my son has had to be fit into their schedule and we've had to see the other doctors they have been amazing too. I can't recommend this place more! 5 stars! read more

Dr. White came highly recommend by a friend when we moved to the area and we are so grateful we decided to go with this practice. Dr. White is extremely knowledgeable in all areas of child development and health. He's supported us through breastfeeding issues, food allergies, eczema, vaccine concerns, illness, and tracking our daughter's developmental milestones. There was never a time that I did not feel 100% confident in Dr. White's assessment and recommendations for my girls. He stays up to date on recent medical research, and does so in all areas of pediatric health to make sure he is making the best possible recommendations for his patients. Sadly we had found this to be rare with other pediatricians. Dr. White has wonderful bedside manner, takes the time to listen to my concerns, and always offers thorough explanations. I've been taking my daughters to Dr. White since they were infants, which makes it over 10 years at the time of this writing. Dr. White and his staff have always made them very comfortable, and he is very easy to ask questions of. I always feel I can get all the information I need; he is a good communicator and knowledgeable. At times we have seen other members of his staff, and all of our experiences have been positive. Once in a while we have had to wait just a little longer than I would prefer, but for the most part we are seen promptly and our experiences are all positive. We have been going to Kevin White for years now. We have always been seen on time and have loved the conversations we have had with staff. Today my son woke up with an earache. We tried to be seen in the morning but they were already overbooked with other weekend illnesses. We were able to set up an appointment for 4pm and were promptly seen. As we were being seen for the earache, my youngest showed the Dr a little rash on her elbow which was eczema. He gave us the advice and how to treat proper. Stoked we were taken care of! read more

After waiting for 2 months, my child was denied treatment because I didn't have "custody papers". Not another family member in the waiting room was even asked this question...trust me, I asked every single one of them. My child has lived with me for 6 years. Their only concern was what their "lawyer" had told them. If, at ANY time, during the multiple phone calls, or the 30 minute wait, they had asked me for legal papers, I would have been happy to provide them. Unfortunately, I took time off from work, waited 2 months, and THEN they told me. They were "willing" to give me another appointment, but at that point, it was clear that medicine was NOT their primary goal, and that their Lawyer really runs the practice. I have since found a wonderful pediatrician's office, whose first goal is to take care of children. read more

Dr. White has been taking care of both of my children since birth. He is incredibly knowledgeable and attentive to any concerns my wife and I may have. The front desk staff is friendly and helpful. The office is clean. There are activities for children while they wait in the front. Visits are usually very quick. For us, this is the most important part: Dr. White will tell you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear. I consider him to be a great communicator and he is able to do this with sensitivity. I feel that if you are open to hear advice that is different than what you were expecting, you will benefit more for it. That said, I always take ANY doctor's advice with a grain of salt but his wisdom has been proven to us consistently and we have built a special trust with him. read more

Dr White is very thorough, listens to all of my questions and concerns (I usually have a list) and makes appropriate recommendations and referrals. I hate to go against the grain but I guess we were one of the few with a not so great experience at Surfside about 1.5 years ago, specifically with Dr. White. We decided to switch from our usual family practice because they were between pediatricians at the time our son was born. A friend recommended Dr. White and he seemed very thorough and somewhat holistic so we gave Surfside a try. When the baby was born we brought him in for a checkup and he was pretty yellow with jaundice. Dr. White looked at him and was very concerned that he'd need light treatment and went on about the dangers of jaundice in a pretty alarmist way. He was convinced based on his vast experience and just by looking at him that my son was at high levels of bilirubin and had me very worried as we awaited the test results...which turned out to be normal as we discovered the next day. I don't doubt his experience or that my son looked more jaundiced than he really was, but I was very unimpressed with Dr. White's (in my opinion - arrogant) bedside manner and that instead of being calm and advising us to do the same until we knew the results he had us freaking out for 24 hours. We went back a few other times when our daughter was sick and saw a nurse practitioner who was great, but ultimately we decided to go back to our old practice's new pediatrician who we now love and highly recommend. read more

I have never been disappointed here. Every single time I call to get my daughter in when it's a fever, spider bite, or tummy ache, they have no problem taking her in. The waits are never wrong. Dr. white and his associates are beyond amazingly nice and welcoming. My daughter is never scared to go see the doctor because the staff is so good to her. I never feel rushed or felt uncomfortable. Dr White has been taking care of my boys since they were born. They're now 13 and 12. While he was with coastal pediatrics we would get tossed around to other doctors in the group which always made me appreciate Dr White that much more. No one compares to him. When he branched off on his own and opened up Surfside Pediatrics we switched over without any hesitation. He has always been kind, caring, and helpful. I've always been comfortable bringing up any concerns and never feel rushed. His nurse Nuvia followed him from Coastal and is every bit of awesome as he is. I always come in with a ton of questions and he always patiently answers them with a smile. I received a great deal of breastfeeding advice and support during her infant stage. Dr. White and his staff are awesome. Been with him since his early days back at Coastal Pediatrics in Oxnard. At the end of the day, most doctors are fairly close in terms of ability. For me what it comes down to is sincerity, likability, and the amount of time the doctors spends at the appointment. Taking the time to make my little ones feel comfortable means things like getting a shot are much easier, and in those instances where their input on how they're feeling can be the key to identifying the problem, they feel comfortable opening up. If you feel rushed like your child is smashed in to a 3:15 appointment with multiple other patients this just doesn't happen. If you want a doctor's office that treats your child with the same care and importance as you would, this is the place to go. As an added bonus they have additional services such as help with breastfeeding, ear piercing, and behavior. Give them a call. read more

I went to Dr. White a few days after my son was born. I was having difficulty breastfeeding and Dr. White was not understanding. My baby would not latch and I already hired a Lactation consultant to help. He told me to basically starve my son and force him to breastfeed. He also wanted me to hire HIS lactation consultant. When I told him i was pumping and giving formula, he told me I was taking the easy route. After two appointments and wasted co pays, I switched to another doctor. read more

I will try and be specific as to what I love and am frustrated with. 1. Dr. White is better than our last pediatrician of ten years. I really like his clear explanations, his manner, the time he takes. I also saw Julie Schreiner and she was the first one to solve a skin problem in my son he had for months and previous Drs could not solve! 2. The front office is nice - I am not scoring low on them per se, but I truly believe they are so overworked. I need to ask several times for the same time from them sometimes (not all.) 3. The above comment about being over worked leads to it is really hard to get an appointment with Dr. White. If you just want a regular well baby visit once a year and don't have any issues that require a monthly visit., or I need to see him today you will be good to go. 4. I appreciated at our last office that we had the same medical assistant every single time. Here it seems they all work for all Dr.s It makes it a lot more comfortable for my kids (and me) to see the same MA every single time. I just happen to think that is a really important feature of a practice I would have never thought to ask. 5. I wonder if it is hard to get in, because I am made to come in more often than other office for prescription checks. This is annoying - however actually a better way to monitor my kids health. 6. My perception, so subjective, is that it is not as warm as our last office. Workers are polite, but not friendly. That isn't saying they are rude, but like there might be some underlying front/back office drama I am picking up on. 7. I only left one message for Dr. White to call me back, but he never did. So overall - I like the Drs, but because it is hard to get into and the lack of continuity on MA and the amount of follow up calls I have to make I am scoring it lower. read more

So we've now had the pleasure of seeing the nurse practitioner and both Dr. Mickey and Dr. White. Wow! These are great people. The whole office staff is kind, warm and accommodating. Dr. White is knowledgeable and compassionate and really directed his questions to my 9 year old and made him feel comfortable. Really took his time to get to know him and his medical issues. Dr. Mickey got us through a rough patch and gave us the potentially bad news straight up. She was honest and that's what we wanted. She also referred us to an excellent pediatric orthopedist. Dr. Kevin White is the best Pediatrician you can ask for! He is great with large families, patient and understanding with parents who are interested in natural health. He is a strong Christian who does Missionary work a few weeks out of the year. He is straight forward, listens, and well informed on his diagnoses. My wife and I have been bringing our children to Kevin White for 2.5 years. Today she had a scheduled appontment and showed up 3 minutes past the time allowed. They were unable to see my son. My wife specifically took time off from work to attend this appointment. How many times have we waited 20 minutes in the waiting room? At least 5x that I can remember. Word of advice to Dr. White fire Karen the front desk manager unless you like turning away clients. As far as Dr. White is concerned he could talk to me for 5 minutes but not see my son for the 2 minutes it would have took. Great policy Dr. White unfortunately you have made plenty of money from my family over the last two years but you will no longer recieve a dime. Which could turn out to be quite good because you may be over indulging in the fast food and not following the nutrional advice you give youngsters.
