We didn't try the Sushi. The Panang with chicken was as good as anywhere I've ever tried it. Excellent flavor and perfect-for-me heat. The yellow curry with chicken was flavorless. We ordered the Masaman with beef. The beef itself was very good - big chunks cooked tender. The masaman was strange - I mean it was not a flavor of any masaman I have ever had. I didn't especially dislike it, but it wasn't great. The Pad Thai was blah and too sweet, for sure too sweet, and the portion size was skimpy. Sushi was ok. I would order it again but would try something different t. I had the crunchy roll and the Rock and roll, and it was just ok. I also had their chicken noodle lunch dish. While the first few bites were very tasty, halfway in the seasoning and curry were too overpowering for me to enjoy the rest. Super thick and very rich. The opening mushroom soup was tasty. I recently had the pleasure of visiting Surin West again, and it is still one of my top "loves"! Although there are technically four locations, the one on Southside offers the best food and dining experience. I went for lunch and when you order a dinner, you get their amazing tofu coconut curry soup...I could indulge in a gallon of this stuff! We shared an order of Basil Rolls (very good, with a tasty, spicy, sauce), and their addictive little Surin Baskets (minced chicken and shrimp with corn, cilantro and some other goodies all tucked inside of a mini pastry bowl, with a sweet sauce to top it off). For the entreé we got the Chicken Noodle Bowl, another reason we went for lunch, as it isn't offered during dinner. It is just creamy, velvety, yummy heaven. Noodles enrobed in a rich coconut-lemongrass-curry sauce, with grilled chicken strips, and garnished with lettuce and bean sprouts. I'm not ashamed to say that I cut it all up together (I know...terrible etiquette) and eat it with my saved soup spoon, so that I can indulge in every spec of that amazing sauce! I've been eating at this Surin for years and have enjoyed many of their menu selections. I can honestly say that I have never gotten anything that wasn't good. There are some things that I have liked better than others, but that's just a taste thing. I would highly recommend THIS Surin for anyone who loves Thai food; to any who like to try new foods (they have mild to very spicy choices); or those that like to go and have an appetizer meal, as they have enough tasty treats in that section to fill you up, as well. The complimentary coconut soup was very good, sushi was decent, and prices were reasonable. It isn't fancy or hip--you wouldn't want to bring a date--but a solid lunch spot. We love Thai and sushi, so we were excited to find a place within walking distance from our hotel. Service couldn't have been worse. They were so bored and almost put out about taking our order. Food was just ok. It was also sooooo cold in the large dining room, you didn't even want to look at the menu. The main dining room seemed nice but they insisted we sit in the larger colder cave-like room. Lots of restaurants out there that would be happy to have our business. Pleasantly surprised! After reading some of the reviews about poor service, I was a little worried about taking my dad there. However, we really enjoyed it and both the hostess who seated us and our waiter were very friendly. And we really liked the food. Had the crab angels, spicy thai beef salad, fried rice, and chicken panang (can't remember the actual dish names but something like that). I have eaten here for years but my last trip was probably my last. The sweet and sour chicken was awful and the service almost non-existent. We tried to get change for the parking meter when we entered the place but was told that they did not keep any change in the facility. I guess they were telling the truth because our bill came to $31.25 and they rounded it UP to $32.00 so they could give me $8 change for $40 in cash. The chicken was dry and only came with one small piece of onion, one small cube of tomato, about a quarter of a green pepper ring, and one cube of canned pinapple -- and only enough sauce (in a small dish) to cover maybe 1/3 of it. The white rice that came with it was scooped with a cone shaped scoop and crumbled off the side of the small bowl. The waitress looked past us at the mostly empty restaurant the entire time she took our order, never returned to fill our glasses, dropped the check off as she swooped past the table and swooped it up on the way back -- then dropped the "change" off without stopping. 75 cents isn't a lot of money to be cheated out of, but it was the "icing on the cake" of this awful experience. And, this used to be one of my favorite spots. I guess what has happened to it is why is was almost empty at lunch time. read more

Awful!!! We decided on Surin for a going away luncheon for a college . BIG mistake!!!! Our server was fired right after he took our order. The manager took over our party of 12. He offered no apology for the scene we'd had to witness. He was rude to us and completely disorganized. Due to the extreme delay in getting our food, some people had to ask for their meal to be to go. We kept being asked over and over again what we ordered. Finally, after several incorrect items were handed out. They just put a bunch of food in a couple of boxes and handed it to random people at the table. (again, no apology) Several of us had to go at that point. We had been waiting more than an hour and a half for lunch. When we got back to the office half of the orders were wrong and a couple of orders had been left out completely. (I personally ended up with a to go box of raw onions, raw bell peppers, pineapple and some tomatoes with cold rice. The whole box went into the garbage. I will NEVER go back and unless you like a bunch of raw onions for lunch, I would recommend you stay away as well. read more

I was surprised by consistent lack of quality in foods served in Surin 280, and consistently good food and services in Surin West (the one in Five points south). I've been going to Surin West for the past 3 years and has always been my favorite place to take friends and family. I always get the spicy beef salad at lunch with their great soup and their stir-fry is amazing! The one thing that never ceases to disappoint me is that, although the service is not the best... the one thing that gets me the most is how pretentious and inconsiderate the CLIENTS are! If you can't afford the delicious meal that is under 10$ at lunch, then don't frequent this lunch spot! Today, I saw one of the most ludicrous scenes of self-entitlement and absurdity... and I almost never fail to see one when I am here. My coworker brought me here, apparently he and his family have been coming for years & it WAS a go-to for them. That, however, is no longer the case. As often as I eat out, it's rare that I experience bad customer service. It's even rarer that it is bad enough for me to comment on it, but this place was just...WOH! Our server was a jerk! She was rude to the point of it being impressive. I don't know if she was having a bad day or we set her off somehow or if mercury was in retrograde...I don't know because it doesn't matter. She was outright disrespectful and rude. Clearly, the absolute bare minimum standard of table service was a little too much for her that day. But the thing that really bothered me was when the management couldn't be bothered to involve themselves. My dining companion asked for the manager after the server bickered with him. We watched our server go back there and talk to the manager and they then didn't bother to come over despite a SPECIFIC REQUEST. Just took some money off the check and let our server throw the bill down on the table like it was frisbee. That says to me that you're used to your servers being bad and are okay with that. Definitely not something that inspires me to make a second visit. I'm sure there are a lot of other average Thai places in Birmingham. read more

I've been eating at this restaurant consistently for the past 12 years. There are only a few items on the menu that I don't care for but not because it's a bad dish, just not my preference in taste. A few of my favorites are: appetizers - crab angels, spring rolls, Surin baskets. Sushi - Kaboom Maki, super crunch, zwai gani. Entrees - Chicken massaman, Thai noodle (but with no peanuts), spicy beef salad (it's not the same since one of main chefs left Surin and went to stix so if you're looking for the "original" taste of this entree it's now at Stix), and Thai BBQ chicken. The service is up and down depending on what waiter you get, sometimes they're quiet or seem in a bad mood but that's life, I've never had "terrible" service... there are a handful of staff that have been there for over 10 years. This is by far one of my favorite restaurants in Birmingham and the ONLY Thai restaurant that I enjoy eating at in the entire country, and I've been to nearly all 50 states... read more

I came in last wednesday and sat at the bar. I had never been there before and I was out of town, looking for a quick bite for lunch. The bar was extremely busy but the bartender (stephen or tyler, i think) took time from all the stuff going on to give me suggestions and answer my questions about the menu. He suggested the pomegranate martini (which was the best martini I've ever had while out of town) and the thai chicken bowl, which was incredible. Love the atmosphere - especially since all of the remodeling is done - I come to town 5 times a year on business - usually stay 5 nights and eat at Surin West four of those 5 nights. I can get one of my favorites every night. Last visit they just started their new small plates menu - can you say DELISH? Shrimp and grits with a Thai twist - Braised Pork cooked with cinnamon and star anise. my last night in town i passed on the big meal and ate Four of the small plates instead - It's like Thai Tapas --- Highly recommend. BTW - I'm always eating alone - eating at the huge new bar means there is always someone to strike up a conversation with and the bartenders are great. Surin West has a special place in my heart since I met my husband there for our first date. Nestled in Five Points, Surin West can be casual or fancy, depends on how you feel for the night. On our first date, we sat at a booth but now we've moved to hanging out at the bar. The bartender is attentive, the food is fresh, and the drinks are a little on the strong side. We love to sit and watch folks come and you have a great vantage point to see what folks have ordered. The hubs get the Pad Thai everytime with crushed peanuts added. He loves it. The peanutty taste is fantastic. The spring rolls consist of tasty cabbage wrapped in a flaky crust with the yummiest dipping sauce. Literally, I could put that stuff on EVERYTHING. And I do love SuperCrunch sushi. The martinis are stong and large. You truly get your money's worth. Just a fantastic little gem. And it reminds us of when we fell in love. read more
