I work at an investment bank and wear a suit to work everyday - and this place has given me the worst quality suits and experience from any store I've ever been. On top of that the price point is higher than most places that make custom suits, despite the poor quality. I highly recommend anyone shopping in the downtown area looking for a custom suit to AVOID THIS STORE LIKE THE PLAGUE. The staff are unprofessional, poorly trained and the work product is cheap. I wanted to share my experience to explain why I feel so strongly and to help others avoid this place. In April last year I bought multiple shirts and a suit from this store. The first time I went I bought one shirt and got measured. Within a month the shirt ripped at the elbows and when I went back they said that they would replace it after remeasuring me again. Feeling optimistic I went in a 2nd time to buy another shirt with the new measurements and again within a month it ripped at the elbow, not wanting to bother them for another replacement. I got this stiched at my local dry cleaner and paid for that out of pocket. At this 2nd visit which was 2 months after the first measure they mentioned they forgot to order my replacement shirt. I waited a few months later and went back a 3rd time to get measured for a suit. They told me it would take 4-6 weeks to get the suit and it ended up coming in 9 weeks and no one from the store bothered to mention the delay to me. When it finally came the suit didn't fit properly and it seemed to be intended for someone much larger than me. The staff tried to convince me there was no problem with the suit but I asked them to try and fix the width. A week later I went to get the suit and it was still to large - on top of that 12 weeks later the replacement shirt I first asked for was still not ready. I tried to complain about the long delays, lack of communication and poor quality and the manager John simply said to me "I'm sorry you feel that way". The whole experience has been very frustrating and I hope no one else goes through this. read more

Just simply great treatment! I needed to get my measurements updated since I got stopped out of online ordering. So I stopped in on the way to another nearby appointment to do as the website directed. The helpful staff looked into my file and noticed that I had tried to order a shirt for "untucked" mode, and the measurements for that variant were not originally taken. I can understand that--I ordered a full suit, so untucked did not enter the conversation. Also, I had ordered the suit from the Oakville location. The prices at this place are so competitive that it makes it hard to buy "off the rack" ever again. Being a man who rarely shies away from the opportunity to dress up or wear a costume, I had to get my act together when came to formal wear. Until now, I've settled with off the rack clothing, but as my figure continues to stray from the norm with training, I made a point to ask one of my classier friends what tailor they recommend. In comes Surmesur. Surmesur is a custom menswear store along Queen St. E, Toronto. This being my first tailored clothing experience, I can't compare Surmesur to other tailors, but I can say that I was overall happy with the experience. The first, and pretty much only initial detail that I told the associate was that I wanted a couple new dress shirts, and that I wanted to keep the designs simple. From there, she walked me through the various customizations that they offer, the most important of which being the fabric. They offer three different dress shirt fabrics which determine the price of the shirt. The first level starts somewhere around $70/shirt, then increases from there. The key differences are cleaning options, durability, feel, and breathability. The first level can only be cold water washed, while the third one can be dry cleaned as well. Durability apparently increases from the first level to the last. As for breathability, you can probably guess that the third level breathes better. Working in the software industry, I plan on only wearing these for special occasions, so I opted for the first level. After you select your fabric, you proceed to choose a whole bunch of details like colour/pattern, collars, cuffs, buttons, threads, embroidery, pockets, etc. What I really liked is that throughout the entire process they'll patiently guide you through the choices until you're happy and confident with your choice. You won't find yourself rushed in the slightest. That being said, if you already know what you fancy, you can apparently place your order online. Once you've picked all your details, they'll take your measurements in the back, then in about 4 weeks your order will come in. I've yet to receive mine, so I'll reserve further judgement, but for the time being I'll say that Surmesur provides you with a quality fitting experience that implies the distinguished look that their clothes hopefully provide. read more

Updated review: I recently bought a suit, two shirts and two ties at Surmesur. I originally wasn't thrilled with the fit of my suit and it took a total of 4 adjustments, but at the end of it I ended up with a suit fits really well, it is what I requested and seems to be good quality. Overall the staff went out of their way to make sure that everything worked out well in the end. The only reasons I didn't give this a 5-star is because I still feel this sort of business needs to be more prescriptive, particularly when it comes to fit for the average person. THANK YOU SO MUCH KATHLEEN AND VENKAT!! This was my first experience with Surmesur and it was INCREDIBLE! I've always gone the regular store route for my suits and then had them altered by my tailor. However, for my wedding I decided to go full custom. From the moment I walked in the store, I was automatically impressed by the modern look, cleanliness, and choices I saw from the store. The design started with one of the store stylists named Venkat. He was very helpful, honest, and knowledgeable. We bounced ideas off of each other and he was not shy to critique some of my choices and was always aware of my budget. When the 3-piece suit and the dress shirt were designed, Kathleen took my measurements, many of which were adjusted by the way she thought the suit would look best on me. After the measurement, I was off. I picked up the suit yesterday and was floored at how well it fit and how picture perfectly it turned out. I was so glad that Venkat and Kathleen were also working yesterday as they were able to see their design come to life, me in the final product and they saw my fiancee cry tears of joy. My fiancee and I have not stopped talking about our experience with the store and rest assured I will be back to order more suits from Surmesur Toronto. I have purchased 2 dress shirts in Ottawa and both fit poorly. The first shirt is tight in the neck and sleeves and is very uncomfortable to wear. I brought the first shirt to the store to get fitted for a second shirt assuming they would be able to make adjustments to my measurements and provide me an excellent fitting shirt. The sleeves on the second shirt are 1 inch longer than the first shirt and can't be worn with a suit which was the purpose. The shirt was purchased before the pandemic and now I am told that shirts can only be altered within 60 days. How can you return a shirt to a store that was closed for months? Despite reading the negative reviews, I walked into this place pretty optimistic. I meant to post this review a while back. Anyways, it was a friday night from what I can recollect and it was..pretty busy to say the least. I was surprised me and a couple of other people were attended to considering it was a pretty damn busy. Even though we had a few of drinks beforehand, I still remember most of the night. We were helped out by this asian lookin dude (Paulo I think?) and we had a blast. From what I can remember, he was very patient with us despite the fact we took so damn long to decide on the fabric. There's so many choices. Anyways, the amount of customization options is insane. We finally decided on the fabric and Paulo walked through the options with us while he was helping like 2-3 other people at the same time...now that's customer service people! Once it was all said and done, we got our measurements done by this lovely lady (Juliet or something) and it was a breeze. Once I got an email weeks later, went to the store with high hopes after that Friday night experience. I brought my fiancee with me and she was really impressed on how the suit turned out. Despite some issues with the fit (which I kinda anticipated), I was impressed by the overall experience. You will not get this experience in a typical retail store. You guys are amazing. read more

My first reaction when I stepped into the new location at Queen & Jarvis was..... well.... I was like a kid in a candy store. I was almost giddy with the choices I had. The store was set up perfectly and I strongly believe this could be the store of the future. with all the fabrics to choose from and design options I had no idea where to even begin. Thankfully there were amazing staff such as Francois who was able to help me navigate the waters of creation. He started me out with a choice of fabric which is what sets the price for your design. With his help I had two custom designed, made to order shirts laid out on one of the many LED touch screens located throughout the store. The it was off to the body scanner -which I thought was pretty cool - but it was the fine measurements he took in addition that REALLY impressed me. Even measuring the cuff size for my watch since I always wear one. It took about 3 weeks for my shirts to arrive and I have to say they are the best shirts I have ever worn in my life. I can't even look at clothing stores anymore because they won't be able to come close to the price, cutting and quality of the end product that Surmesur can offer you. I highly suggest anyone that is into looking their best and getting taken care of like a king to visit Surmesur. The first time stepping into this store I felt that it was very pleasant, and the staff that greeted me were very friendly and professional. I ordered a suit and thought the concept of having a custom suit would be amazing. After getting measured I had to wait 4-5 weeks until the suit came in. Once I received the e-mail notification I was excited to see how the suit turned out. Initially it looked great on me the waist had to be taken in a bit but it overall looked good, so I brought it home feeling pleased with my purchase. The following week I tried the suit on at my parents place to show them my new "custom" suit. However this time I was on the receiving end of critical reviews on how badly the cut of the material was, and how it looks really tight on me and the stitching was horrendous. I took off the suit and begin examining the suit in detail. I was taken aback on how poorly stitched the pants were, I can see my hand on the other side! It was clearly not double stitched or done properly at all! There were threads everywhere and there was a lot of static in the material. At this point I felt ashamed to tell other people I got a "custom" suit that was too tight, poorly crafted and the material used was paper thing. I had to return to Surmesur and get a full refund on the product because I was highly dissatisfied with the end product. I felt unhappy to drop $600 on a suit that looks like it will fall apart after wearing it once. I need something that will last longer than 1 day. The customer service provided was great which covers up the quality of the actually product, because you don't see the product first hand like "off the rack suits". You have to wait after a month to see if the results of the craftsmanship are good or bad. The following day I went over to a big suit store with tons of "off the rack suits" to compare my experience with Surmesur. Just looking at these "off the rack suits" I can see the major difference in quality compare to my "custom" suit I got from Surmesur. I tried a few suits on to find my general fit and I felt even better in these "off the rack suits". I was happy to purchase two of these suits for just $100 more than my custom suit from Surmesur. Overall I felt happy to spend my money on these suits instead of at Surmesur. Overall, Surmesur had great customer service with poor end product. If you are an average height guy with average body type you should just get "off the rack suits" with little to no alteration to be made depending on the style you want (slim, moderate, classic). If you do not have the average height or body type then consider a "custom" suit, but not from here. The 2 stars are for the customer service not the end product read more

Four months of my life I'll never get back. Just to be clear, I think for a small percentage of people this place could work. If you really want some weird customization on your suit that you just can't find in a shop or online, you could come here and MAYBE get something you like...assuming you also were prepared to trade customization for any standard of quality. If you are this man, then go to the store and try on one of the jackets hanging up in your size...if it fits you, then go ahead and gamble. If it doesn't fit you...run away as fast as you can. I also want to be clear that the staff was very nice for the most part. They did at times seem to blame my body for the ill fit, and even my attitude for not accepting what they deemed an acceptable suit, but generally were quite pleasant. They also offered me a discount at the first hurdle, and then a full no questions refund at the end when they ultimately couldn't do their job. I think the problem for me was expectation. I expected that Surmesur was what it said it was...a fully custom, semi high end, made-to-measure suit shop. It isn't. It delivers on some of it's promise...I mean the choice is really pretty impressive...almost overwhelming. Your suit price is decided by which material you select, and any extras you may add to the suit...in theory, you could get out of here with a $400 suit which fits you as well as the guy who spent $1200 on a higher end fabric. The problem is, it won't fit you. Well, it might fit you. Maybe, eventually. But probably not. After you've selected your swatches and decided all the details...single breasted, lapel width, trouser fit, shirt collar, lining etc. (admittedly this process was really really fun) you are taken to the body scanner. This is the big selling piece of Surmesur...a 360 degree 3D scanner which creates an image of your body and electronically measures all your contours. How can this go wrong? Then they show you the picture..mine looked perfect...just like me. After this the tailor (salesman with measuring tape) takes some measurements just for 'back-up'. The problem is...this is all entirely for show. None of the images taken by the scanner, or the electronic measurements are used. It seems pretty clear to me that the suits are made in a factory to a certain template they have. They will use the measurements to determine whether you are a 44t or a 42short or whatever and make your suit based on their template for that size. If their template suits your body type...then here is where it might work for you, but only then. Otherwise you are fighting a losing battle against a suit which was simply not made for your body. My first jacket came back probably two inches too short and about, oh i dunno three sizes to big. It was horrendous... I could not have gone into a shop and TRIED to find a jacket that fit worse. On top of this, the craftsmanship was abysmal...the ticket pocket was sewn on at like a 40 degree angle to the pocket below it. I had a wedding to attend in France so I asked off to the side, whether, honestly this is something that could be fixed or whether we should just start again? Everyone said oh it's not that bad ( I wish I had taken pictures...it WAS sooooo that bad) and that they have 'the best tailor in the city' on site and he could fix it. So, 'the best tailor in the city' came up and had a look at me, said we could pinch this, tuck this...made some comment to my shoulders being 'too big' and that I had bad posture...but said he could fix it. He couldn't. Jacket 1. in the garbage. Further to this, my skinny fit shirt came back billowy and blouse-like, and the waist on the trousers was too big. Loose threads, poor quality everywhere. The second jacket came back slightly better..but still really bad. It's lapel was the wrong size, and the pockets were not the pockets I had asked for. I was told by 'the best tailer in the city' that it was 'impossible' to change the lapel or the pockets but that he could make the rest of the suit fit. He couldn't. After three attempts, he managed to get the body fitting really quite well, but the shoulders and sleeves were a bulging puckered mess. I took pictures to another tailor who told me she could fix all the 'many' problems but it was now only a week before my own wedding. Jacket 2. In the garbage. To their credit, they gave me a full refund. A refund I took directly to SUIT SUPPLY. Walked in, tried on a 44R three piece off the rack and it fit like a dream. The tailor took 1/4 inch off the sleeves and put a cuff on my trousers and touched nothing else. That is how it should be. The problem with Surmesur is that the product that returns from the factory is worse than most off the rack suits in fit and quality. All of the work is meant to be done in house by 'the best tailor in the city.' How can you possibly end up with a better fitting suit, when you are starting from so far behind? read more

I recently visited Surmesur while in Toronto for a wedding. I had heard from some people at the reception that they had gotten some of their shirts there and they were really happy with the fit and value so I thought I'd check it out. After getting my shirts in the mail a few days ago I'm glad I did. The store itself is very cool. Staff was very attentive and helped guide me through the ridiculous selection of fabrics, colors, patterns, etc that they have to choose from. I really enjoyed the level of customization. More importantly the shirts, which they had shipped to my place in the states, fit perfectly and look great. Highly recommend checking it out if you get the chance. read more

Extremely impressed with the customer service on getting custom shirts. I originally bought my shirts at Spier and McKay but the professionalism here was way more streamlined. I walked in and talked to Haseeb, he showed me the fabrics, let me pick out the one that matched my budget, then we followed 7-8 points of customization. Collar, placket, button, pleats. You can literally choose anything you want, and they have a online platform so it's all viewed and saved in front of you. They had me sit down and asked if I wanted coffee or water. WOW. In and out within 45 minutes, and although he was managing 2-3 customers at the same time, he checked in with me every 2 minutes to make sure I had my needs met. I chose to get 3 shirts, $85 each ($15 off when you get three), chose to get 3 different types of collars, and 3 different types of cuffs so I could try them all out. Not being dissuaded by rather unfavourable reviews, and relying on a friend's excellent experience (one fitting and perfect suit upon arrival) my partner and I decided to have our suits custom done at Surmesur in Toronto. The suits are for our wedding at the end of October this year. So what did I think? Well.. Our first visit was in mid-August for a consultation and design selection for our respective suits and shirts. My initial impression was of vast fabric selection for suits and shirts. The design consultant was helpful in guiding us through the options, despite the network lagging and the "digital" model element not being available. We were unable to visualize what the end product would be, but we are both design oriented so we were satisfied with each of our elements. I would caution anyone coming here to have a strong idea as the consultant will not know what your preferences are. At this point, out biggest problem was that our measurements were taken by the gentleman who also provides customer service support at the front desk. He is not a tailor. Someone answering phones and otherwise not very knowledgeable or opinionated in respect to design should not be taking down measurements. Note: the fact that he is wearing a fitted shirt and pants and looks awesome has no bearing on what you'll receive. Our second visit was on September 9. The suits arrived and were ill fitting for both myself and my partner. My jacket was too large, my partner's jacket was as if it was made for a child - he could not raise his arms. The customer service representative had the gall to tell him this was the style he chose! When the in-house seamstress arrived to inspect the garment, she immediately identified issues with the jacket's construction as not "style related" but an obvious design and execution flaw. My jacket had the wrong venting. All in all, the jackets were to be remade. My pants were massive - too long and too wide in the waist. We wondered, did someone actually take our measurements? Our third visit was on September 19, but this was only for the pants and shirts. We were not advised, but came anyway expecting everything to be there. Regardless, the shirt and pants for both myself and my partner required further alterations and I was dissatisfied with the fit of the pants. My pants also had a poorly executed hem, which one of the more competent staff recognized when I pointed it out. The customer service rep - part of the problem as he is totally inept - took some more measurements and we were off (...to have a beer and lament the result). Our fourth visit was on September 27 to try on the new jackets with the tailored pants and shirt. My new jacket was too big, my shirt required some minor alterations but the pants were beyond awful with the new jacket. Distressed, I felt like I would rather wear my H&M off the rack suit. In between visits, I called the store twice without a response. Worried that my alterations were lost in the queue, and with a looming deadline, I emailed the store after no one responded to my messages. I received a response from Haseeb, who provided an explanation and advised that he will be there for our next fitting. So, our fifth visit was on October 7. Haseeb was extremely knowledgeable, helpful and opinionated in terms of tailoring. We felt confident in this hands and felt like his suggestions were actually helpful rather than the usual "ok, guess that looks good" or "no, you actually don't need any more tailoring." He fixed my issue with my pants and personally identified issues with my shirt (note: the previous customer service rep said it was fine). Our last visit was Oct. 11 and the suits and shirts fit nicely! I have to say that it was Haseeb that made all the difference. He offered us two gift cards for future use and while they did not make up for the frustrations that we experienced, it was a nice touch along with Haseeb's helpful eyes and skills. He made the difference in this instance and I think herein lies the problem: since Haseeb, or coworkers of the same skill, are not guaranteed, sometimes you end up with less knowledgeable staff helping you. While the majority of the staff is fine, the customer service rep from the front (Michael? I can't remember his name) should not be assisting with tailoring or fittings and should stick to answering phones. read more

I would give it 0 stars if I could. I approached Surmesur to do the suits for my wedding party because I thought it would be a nice gift to the guys instead of doing the standard rental. I'm very easy going and tried my best to understand any issues that the store had but after having one of the worst customer experiences ever (and seeing at least 3 other wedding parties that I spoke with at the store) go through the same thing, I can't stress enough to any consumers to avoid this place. my first experience when i walked into the store was amazement - so many options, colours, fabrics etc. I walked out the first time and was incredibly optimistic! when my suit arrived a month later, the colour was wrong and the measurements weren't even close so they re-ordered it. another 3 weeks went by and i got a call saying that my fabric was no longer available and i hard to return to the store. now it's my 3rd trip to the store (the first order, the first try on and now my second order) and the store (in good conscience) offered up a better fabric. I was happy that they tried to right the wrong they had made. when I placed the first order, i was assured that only minor tweaks would be necessary afterwards (which was important because of my groomsmen lives in the US). on that third trip I had asked to see his suit - he is 5'10 and the pants were created for a child. Had i not asked to see his suit, there would not have been enough time to fix that problem before my wedding. They once again re-ordered that suit and I could not have the groomsmen try it on now because of the distance. on my 4th visit to try my 2nd suit on for the first time, i had met with Haseeb who seemed annoyed that I had called everyday for a week to confirm when my suit would arrive as my time was running out to get it done before the big day and they NEVER returned a single call (my groomsmen ALL faced the same issue). I also spoke with the manager francis who was to meet me in the store and offer up an additonal incentive because of all the problems. turns out Francis just didn't show up that day and Haseeb knew nothing about it. The one highlight of this whole process was that the store did give me all of my money back including the deposit. If there are no time restrictions and you are in close proximity to the store, then it may be worth trying it out. For me, I've found that buying a high end suit off the rack and having it tailored is a much better option and done locally (surmesur suits are made overseas) so you can get an order back in less than a month. read more

Each time I have visited the store I have been received by warm and friendly staff. Once my initial measurements were taken (both by hand and via their onsite scanner) it simplifies each successive visit as the numbers and preferences are already saved on their online database. On the occasion when my suit fit was just shy of where I wanted it, Haseeb and his team were quick to make the necessary adjustments and ensure that I had exactly what I was looking for. I can honestly say that I feel confident in my Surmesur suits; excellent value considering that the competitive rice-points and they have just now began working with a new supplier and my latest shirt and suit reflect this with further quality and fit. Needing a suit for a wedding and after hearing great things from a friend who has gotten a lot of killer suits and shirts from here I decided it was time to go. I had the pleaure to be greeted by Frank and after a few questions he promptly took me through the process of getting fitted. I was then met by Kathleen who was super thorough when it came down to taking measurements. Once that was finished Frank walked me through the customization part. Since I'm a stocky shorter dude he suggested all these cool features like slimmer lapels, slanted pockets, and a double vent in the back so I could put my hands in my pockets comfortably. 3 buttons on the sleeves & custom name inside - it's just that kind of polish that makes the difference. The other super cool feature is that you get to customize the inside as well with a different pattern fabric and behind the neck so u stand out more when your cold and flip the collar up. I also gotta mention that I needed this suit done in about 2 weeks and shipped to Vancouver since the wedding was on the West Coast. Frank made it happen. Overall super happy with my new black suit, I will need to go in for a couple minor adjustments - But what custom suite doesnt. I probably gained weight from the wedding lol. I ordered a shirt to try it out. I went in, they had a great selection and took the time to really measure every aspect of my torso to get the perfect fit. I picked out a fabric, buttons, embroidery, etc. They had lots of selection. The shirt wasn't a bad price either. About $115 plus tax. I received an email a few days later that the shirt was backordered. I asked if they had a time estimation and he said the fabric was discontinued. So now we had to go back and re-pick out the fabric and buttons. It was the manufacturers fault, I'm told. The shirt just arrived today, I went in and tried it on and I like it. I'll update this review if anything goes wrong with the shirt after I wear it a couple times. read more

I had one of the best shopping experience ever. It's not everyday that I get a custom made suit and Justin (?) made it seamless, engaging and interactive. I never felt pressured into getting anything i didn't want nor did I feel like it was all about the upsell! He and the rest of the staff were knowledgable, patient, detailed orientated and extremely friendly. My fiancé and I both left with suits that reflected our personalities and will make our wedding day all the more special, without breaking the bank!!We even got custom made French cuff shirts for $60. Although the final product has not arrived yet due to mishaps on their part (as a result of the suit and shirt not fitting properly despite a few alterations now), they are truly doing everything in their power to right their wrongs and ensure my satisfaction including unprecedented and unmatched remedies. This is one of the best suits you can buy for your money. Completely customized with great attention to detail. The only thing people could possibly get upset about is the length of time it takes to receive your suit. However, given what you are getting and for the price - GET OVER IT. The service is excellent and more than accommodating to any changes you would like to make to your suit. I will be going back anytime I need a suit. Best place in Toronto by far. read more

I had a suit and shirt made last July for a cousin's wedding, and came in 7 months later for some minor tweaks to both after being out of the country for an extended period of time. Justin greeted myself and my fiance at the door, and without any questions asked, offered to make the required alterations on the spot. He actually suggested a replacement pair of pants at no charge, however I didn't think this was necessary. Excellent customer service and quality clothing from these guys! Today was my fifth visit to surmesur in order to hopefully finally pick up my suit. After my first refitting I was advised it would be ready Tuesday. I showed up Wednesday and low and behold it wasn't ready. No courtesy phone call or email advising me that it was late. The suit needed the waist brought in and the arms opened up for both the jacket and shirt. Seemed simple enough. Finally I went back today and tried everything on again. The pants were fine and the shirt seemed ok too but the jacket was now shifted ie the buttons didn't align and caused a puffing around the right breast side. They again said they'd fix it and I requested it be done by end of day. Two men assisted me when I came back in but when I tried the jacket on again, the puffing was still happening. After some vigorous pulling and tugging by the salesman, I showed him how the buttons don't align. He advised that it was because one of my shoulders is lower. So I told him - it's a CUSTOM suit!! Then he said that I shouldn't move my arm a certain way and then the puffing won't be so evident. The whole process has been nonsense and quite frankly for nearly $800 I can and will do better elsewhere. First and last time with surmesur. read more

Now only if there was a store like this for women. I introduced both my brother and dad to surmesur and not only do they love their tailored suits and shirts, but absolutly LOVE their concept. My brother dragonboats and has massive arms/broad shoulders and its almost impossible for him to find a dress shirt and suit that fits him well. I was really impressed with their in house technology that scanned for his exact body measurement, and was further impressed with the extra attention that the in house tailors give once the suit arrived at the store. They've now gotten multiple suits and shirts from there. What's really awesome is because their information is in the system I can go in myself and creat new stuff for them. In fact, the last birthdays/holiday gifts have been surmesur gift cards and they absolutly love it. Went in to buy a custom shirt. The guy who was working there and supposed to be helping me was trying on clothes himself and ignored me for a few minutes after his manager told him I needed help. Wtf? Other than that the shirt fit OK, was too tight in the shoulders. read more
