I am that girl. The one who will get her hair done for a Halloween costume, or a birthday party, or New Year's eve. One day I just might even get my hair done for a wedding I attend. It's a fantasy I've had and have yet to fulfill. Sure, some may wonder why anyone would spend the money on such a thing, but I consider it a total treat and it's nice to go out for an evening and not have to obsess whether or not my hair is holding up. I have only done it about 3 times (for those events referenced above), but I'm sure to keep up with the splurge. I am also that girl who always waits to call her regular salon and get her regular girl because I live in another fantasy that I am her only customer and that no one could possibly love her as much as I do, so she must be available. She never is and I'm always procrastinating. Hence the introduction of Surrender Salon and Ms. Chelsea DeVere. Did you catch that? I said "Chelsea DeVere." This girl, by her name alone, was meant for something special, I swear! I'd love to tell you what she looked like, but being that it was Halloween she was all painted up like a Dia de Los Muertos girl. Before I knew who my stylist was I stood their hoping it was her with her simple, yet perfectly painted face! I'm always afraid I'll get the older woman who will conservatively style my hair. Chelsea did a great job and styled it off to the side in a funky but feminine, throw back slightly to the 20's kinda way. It was my first side do. I liked it very much, and it certainly made my costume. If this is the kind of treat you think you'd like to indulge in, be prepared, up-do's can cost you a pretty penny, and here it was over $50 with a tip and no washing. P.S. getting your hair styled "dirty," otherwise known as one day old hair, helps the style stay longer. read more

This whole experience was kind of a rollercoaster. I've been trying to find a new stylist closer to home, and this place was just down the street. Like anybody I read the reviews, and they seemed pretty great. I did have some questions about their prices but no one ever answered the phone, so I just booked online. I was quoted "170$ for color and cut". Granted I wanted a Devacut, which on their website was about 15$ more so I figured I'd better add that it in. My appt was at 11am so I arrived 10 min early just in case she wanted to have a quick consultation since I was a new client. To my surprise the door was locked and there's no one inside. So I'm standing outside for a few minutes calling and ringing the door bell, when all of a sudden a women comes from around the corner. She unlocks the door and says to follow her and I continue to wait while she finishes opening up the store. Which online said should have been open since 9am. We have a quick consultation. And I'm excited for the work. She does the cut first and then goes onto color. I appreciate her taking her time, I've never sat for over 2 hours just to have 1 color on my hair. My hair is at armpit length. Anyways she finally washes me out which is amazing! The nice scalp massage was a pleasant surprise. So I dry up a bit. And she warns me not to be alarmed that my color isn't what I really wanted. She said it's because it's still a little wet but once fully dry will lighten up 3 shades *insert eye roll*. Meanwhile I'm left with a mild case of "hot roots". I go to the register to pay. Expecting 170$ + 15$ for the curly cut. She says your total will be 285$. A little shocked at first I just say ok, and then I ask why such a high jump from quote online. She asked me what I was quoted and I told her and she said oh, the online quote is just for roots and a cut(which It doesn't say). And since She needed to use more color than just for roots It comes out to 100$ more, based on the amount of grams color she used. Which was very unsettling. Because I would have NEVER agreed to have my hair dyed for 200$. Especially when it's not even guaranteed to be the color I wanted. Overall, the cut was nice and the color ok. So just be warned, quotes online for "color" are for roots and they are the starting** prices. read more

I don't normally go to Long Beach, but I had to find a place near the Hyatt since I was attending a wedding reception and wanted to get a blow out. This place popped up, and with its 5 stars, I decided to give it a try! My family and I were 15 minutes late, but the stylists were super sweet and still took their time in doing our hair. It was $35 for a wash and blow dry, and extra $10 for usage of hot tools (curling or straightening hair). The hair products they use are all natural and smell really nice. I loved the set up of the salon too. They have an area for coffee and cake! Definitely recommend to try it out! read more

Wow! Eminence skincare! They have it here! I've suffered with cystic acne, uneven skin tone, red dry patchy cheeks, an oily t-zone, and the list goes on... I've used Eminence stone crop oil cleanser, birch water essence (toner), and lotus detoxifying overnight treatment for just one week, and my skin is insanely noticeably BETTER! It's brighter, feels fresh and hydrated, appears clean (no patches, uneven color), no redness, I'm speechless!! Got my hair done at a different salon 3 days before my birthday and the lady turned my blond hair Orange. I have nothing against orange but it wasn't what I wanted, so a friend had mentioned Surrender Salon and it's two blocks from my house I decided to call them to see if they can fix my orange hair. Called and Brandon was so nice he said I could come in to get a free consult and see what happens from there. Amber told me she could fix it Same day! I have had horrible past experiences with salons, and this one really shocked me! My husband left for deployment, and I was in need of something to cheer me up and so I went to get something different done. My hair is hard to work with, curly, nappy, and was partially dyed black still, and it was the weekend so I didnt expect to get in. Well, Chelsea gave me a call and had me come in last minute and she was so welcoming! The salon was easy to find and it looked so relaxing, might i add, the music was on point! Chelsea understood what kind of hair I had because she also had wavy hair. I explained only in few detail that I wanted layers and bangs, and she did it even better than what I wanted! I want to preface by saying my review is solely based on my experience coloring my hair with Priscilla. I DO NOT recommend her and I will not be returning to the salon which is a shame since I would've loved to try some of their other services (massage, facials, reiki healing). Staff were friendly and space was cute I was a new client looking to change to a stylist who used natural/sustainable products. I had been going to my prior stylist for 7 years and while my prior stylist always did a great job, I wanted somewhere closer to me that offered better quality products. After researching different options, I was ready to take the plunge and make a change and I chose Surrender Salon. I called and booked a consultation with Priscilla to discuss what I was looking for, price and how many sessions it might take. After the consultation where she assured me she would only need 1 appointment, I booked for the following week. I asked basically for a bronde balayage and let me say that is nothing close to what I got. I've been coloring my hair for the last 12 years and understand you don't always get your hair to look exactly like the picture(s). However she colored my hair so that it looked like I was growing out blonde hair (dark roots with gold blonde). There was no balayage, no transition and it wasn't bronde. After she finished initially I was honest in letting her know that I didn't like it and I didn't think it looked like what I requested. She ended up having to tone it two more times and it still was nothing like what I wanted. By this time I had been there for 6 hours!! Priscilla did offer to book another appointment later in the week to fix it free of charge however at this point I've lost complete confidence in her ability and will not risk being disappointed again. The other thing is that I felt she was distracted toward the end. She was going out of town that night and when the appointment ran later than scheduled, her husband kept calling to see when she would be finished. He would call her cell and then the salon every 30-40 minutes. While she assured me I was the priority, I couldn't help but feel she was very distracted. read more

Oh Eva, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways... So first the short hair and now bangs. It might seem like no big deal to you my friends, but we're talking about a girl who has had long layered hair since her senior year in high school. That was ten years ago, and it may have been ten more had Eva never shaken up my conservative haircutting ways. How did she break me from my bangs-less bonds? It started with a simple clever mention of bangs last trim. "Maybe when your hair's a little longer- you know it'd look super cute with a little pony tail." The seed was planted and a couple of months later I was ready. Now every person knows this feeling: you're sitting in the chair. You can't see the mirror and all you see is hair falling off left and right. OH GOD WHAT IS THIS PERSON DOING TO MY HEAD?! All the styling in the world can't possibly fix the now-massacre up top. All you want to do is don your favorite hoodie (hood on of course) and slither out of there. Now picture the exact opposite, and that is Eva. Both of us looking into the mirror she pulled sections of bangs to-be onto my forehead. Either little side bangs or straight across bangs? Of course little indecisive me had not a clue. So what does her kind soul do? Starts with long below my eyes side swept bangs because you can always chop more. And so, slowly, my legit-straight-across-my-forehead bangs were formed in a most calm and un-terrifying manner. This is a great place. Their prices are fair and service is good. Lots of extras, like offering you a drink when come in. I had been going to the same stylist for over 10 years, but had moved. I found myself driving 45 minutes each way to see said stylist for years. Then, one day, I drove by this place and thought "Why the heck am I taking half a Saturday to get my haircut, with this place around the corner?" One day, I decided to give it a try and boy am I glad I did. Josie cuts my hair and I challenge you to find another human being more solid than her, she is salt of the earth and great at her job. I've debated - whether or not to update my last review of this place but ultimately decided that people need to know what happened to me, so here goes (make of it - what you will): Days after my last positive review, my head broke out, all over, in terrible sores (true story) that lasted for almost a week. After an extremely unfortunate - nigh unbelievable - 3 hour ordeal inside the salon - I had no choice but to seek the only appropriate resolution... a full and total refund. The owner did refund my money - completely - and explained that I must be allergic to hair dye, which is why I had such a bad reaction. To that notion, I did and do contest! Offering the only evidence I can - that never before and not again since - in the last 20 years - have I had a reaction to any dye - whatsoever. Needless to say, I will not be back. read more

I've been going to Surrender for a little over a year now, and felt it necessary to update my review, which I posted a year ago based on my first experience. I'll try to keep this brief. I recently tried the spa pedicure services here, and I'd say it was fantastic. Although they only have one station for a pedicure and manicure, I think the value is almost unbeatable. First off, if you compare the prices to other popular salons or spas, it's slightly cheaper to get your nails done at Surrender. The spa pedicure was as advertised - using all organic products (including polish), took a little over an hour, and included a nice feet/leg massage. I adored my nail technician and enjoyed my conversation with her. She did a great job and over 2 weeks later, the polish is still on and looking fresh, with hardly any noticeable chips. Now for the main services Surrender is known for... HAIR. GO SEE JAMIE. SHE IS THE SHIT. I have never known what it was like to completely trust a hair stylist, till I met Jamie. I have never needed to come in with pictures or have ideas prepared of what I want. Just after chatting with her a bit, she somehow always knows exactly what I'm looking for. She gives me enough change when I need it, without going overboard, and always knows how to make me feel fabulous. She takes her time and really knows her craft. She'll take care of you, promise. Plus she can do a pretty nice ombre. Although I didn't want to go too extreme, so my hair is more of a semi-ombre/frosted tips. But in any case, I have never gotten so many compliments on how healthy my hair looks and how great my hair color is. read more

So I just finished doing my hair and am late for work but, my hair came out so good today that I just HAVE to write a review for Jamie and Surrender Salon. I freakin' Love love LOVE this place! I went for two consecutive days (my choice). The first day I decided to do the cut. I showed her a picture of what I wanted and we spoke for a bit about what exactly I liked and didn't like. I appreciated the time she took asking me what I wanted. The cut came out awesome! I get compliments all the time. It's super easy to do. By the way, Jamie took her time showing me how to dry my hair and style with a round brush. Those scare me! Thanks to her, I use one every day now without any fear of getting my hair stuck and having to cut it off. Second day I got color. I have been looking for color for a long time. Everyone always ended up making me look like Elvira or a chola from the 80's with orange hair. Well, Jamie got it perfect! The color is rich and makes my hair so shiny and healthy looking. My gray even stayed covered this time! Yay!! Go see Jamie if you want a hot cut! She's totally cool and will make you look great! I think the other girls that work there do great work too!The salon is great. AND they use Pureology products. That's it. I'm a customer for life. read more

This little shop is very cute, when you first walk in you could feel the positive energy shift. My bestfriend and I came here to get a facial with Belinda. She's amazing! She's very sweet and gave me tips in how to control my skin. She did a good job of making me feel comfortable and relaxed since it was my first time. However, the reason why I took a star off was because while I was waiting for my turn, I over heard a group of workers gossiping very loudly in the main room. It wasn't pleasant hearing someone being called "stupid" and "dumb" for 15 minutes in the waiting room. I thought it was unprofessional considering the shop promotes inner beauty, positive thinking, ect. There's a time and place for everything and it wasn't the place for that. read more

I have OH SO MANY wonderful things to say about this place. First things first, I am addicted to Surrender! So far I've had hair cut and color by Amber and she did a fantastic job! My hair actually has movement and she was able to pick out a "natural" color for my hair. Shes also really nice and attentive to your hair needs. Ive also had the pleasure of getting my makeup done by Priscilla who was able to make me look fantastic on a special day! She used healthy skin care makeup by Jane Iredale. The products used on my face (acne prone skin) were so wonderful, I came back and splurged on everything she put on me that night, I am wearing the makeup right now! Lets not forget that Ive managed to fall asleep with the makeup on twice (I know, so not good for you right?!), but it was as though it actually made my skin BETTER! Bizarre! Totally worth what I paid for... Lastly, my facial experience with Star. AWESOME! She shared so much knowledge with me about my skin and how to take care of it. She was careful with my face because I was on acne topical medication treatments and let me emphasize the WAS ON, because I swear after the facial I asked her what she used on my skin....what was the magic potion in the bottle...DNA SKIN CARE. I bought the hydration and mist as well as the cleanser and after one day of using it, I already seen a difference! She did not once pressure me into buying any products. We talked about healthy eating and healthy skin care routines. Ive learned so much! Ill be going back for their infrared sauna room (detoxifier) soon! I love this place. P.S. The review is for the hair removal by Ellie--I haven't gotten any other services--but the place itself is fancy and clean. They do sugaring instead of waxing. I think the sugar-paste is a better because it won't rip off layers of skin. Ellie is really nice and helps make your experience as pain-free as possible. I get the impression that no matter what Ellie did for a living, she'd do a quality, thorough job because she's just a person who takes pride in good workmanship. She takes time to get all the hairs, helps you out with ingrowns. She's professional and sorta silly at the same time--a perfect combo. All the prices for the various body parts are listed on the website. Prices are comparable with other places, but considering the time taken and quality, might actually be a bit of a better value. read more

I was greatly pleased to get my hair DID by Marla who seemed genuine and took her time to provide an exceptional service. As someone who has been seeking a new hairstylist for almost 3 years now, I seem to have met the "one" who listens attentively and cuts my hair the way I want without making me feel like I am being too "particular" as anyone should. (It's my hair and I have to live with it until it grows out.) Simply put, I have been shopping around. It was also a plus to listen to her explain some "science" of hair and how it related to the way my hair was being treated throughout the process. I came in spontaneously with some doubts and was definitely pleased considering that I was expecting some sort of disappointment as I have had with other hairstylists since I returned to LA. I also appreciate that the salon was able to accommodate my walk-in status and provide me an available excellent hairstylist on the spot without almost no wait at all! That's almost unheard of, especially for an all-service salon. My only peeve is the price... But it was worth making me feel "enhanced" and fresh again. Then again, with the price, I am not sure about visiting as often as I would like to. Got my first Brazilian wax from Ellie, and it honestly was not as bad as I thought. They use sugar, which I guess is better than wax, cause it's a natural thing. But Ellie was straightforward with me, telling me that it will hurt. She wasn't sugarcoating anything, which made me relax even more. She's very nice and did her best to make me feel comfortable. It does hurt. But depending on your pain tolerance; the pain can be bearable or unbearable. So it really depends on you, and Ellie will tell you which part hurts the most. it's $55 for a Brazilian, which is okay + tip! and to top is off, Ellie is from Brazil! which made me so much calmer. read more

Marla is a miracle worker! She knows everything about hair. She keeps it real and lets you know if your expectations are realistic. She will not do something that will damage your hair or something that she knows will not turn out ok. She will not steer you wrong in any way. She makes sure that she goes over everything with you as she does not want to disappoint you. I got my ombre redone with her. My first ombre was done at another salon and it just looked like I really needed to get my roots done and sadly it looked really bad. I told Marla this and she just understood exactly what I wanted. I am so happy with my hair. I have been looking for a stylist who knows her stuff and Marla is it. She even called back to check on me and make sure I was happy. As a Latina woman, I am appalled at the comment written below by "Loving L." about Marla making racist comments. You obviously set her up and how dare you go out of your way to make her look bad on this website. It's women like you that give us Latinas a bad name. I suggest you go back and rewrite your review. So ridiculous! Not once did Marla ever make me feel uncomfortable. She obviously needs some feedback and needs some information from you to give you exactly what you need. I recently moved and needed to find another hair salon that can take care of my wavy hair. I found it through yelp and it seemed great based on reviews. The place is spacious, family owned, and looks decent inside with a modern zen sort of vibe. I had an appointment with Priscilla that I am very disappointed with. While she seems to know a thing or two about what haircuts work for what hair type, she cut my hair much shorter than I specified...ok, I can live with that, it will grow. The real nightmare started when she begun blow drying my hair. She kept on pulling it very painfully, over brushing, and overdrying. At some point, hairbrush got stuck in my hair and she had to literally tear it off. She tried to cover that up with story about how my cuticles are dry and my hair clings on to each other...which is BS because I had my previous stylist take 5-10 minutes and do the same job without ever pulling my hair. By the way, she made a joke that at least I didn't lose any hair while she was tearing it off...I guess I should consider myself lucky. Furthermore, she did not blow dry my hair the way I wanted and instead of wavy, bouncy hair I ended up with lifeless dry straight lumps....of course that happens when you go over already dry strand over and over again. When I tried to explain to her one more time that my previous stylist achieved the same look using just quick blow drying, she appeared very confused and had no idea how to make ends fly...that should tell you something. My scalp is still hurting 1 hour later and I am very frustrated because I paid 60$ for botched hair style...will not return back. I would rather drive back to Santa Monica and get it done properly for 40$ like I used to. read more

I came here from a recommendation. My friend comes here to do her waxing and nail needs. I was totally unimpressed with the quality of work but happy with the atmosphere and ambiance. PROS: -delicious variety of coffees for u to make with coconut, organic, soy, or regular milk. -Facility is pretty on the inside -Staff is super friendly -pretty seating up high with magazines but dark CONS: -$30 for an express pedicure that is 45 minutes long, not because of some foot rubbing but because she went that slow. -There was no foot scrub, just a rubbing of the scrub pad under my foot for 1/2 a second with no force. I mentioned that she could be rough and she responded that its an express pedi and that the deluxe version provided a more rough scrub. So to apply pressure during the express I'd have to pay and extra $5. HA! -A lot of other places I've been to can be very creative by doing a French style with a white tip while using any color on the nail. I was unable to get that here. Only clear -She didn't clean/scrape under and around the nail like all other places do. -no free WiFi -seating is hard after a while with no massage. My booty hurt -The girl took my coffee mug and threw out my coffee without me finishing it -As I was getting up she told me my nails would be wet for 1.5 hours. -Overpriced pedicure that was basically a nail painting session. Booo I just felt that even with it being an express I could've felt a little better when I left. read more

Some were good, some were bad and some were just meh. Yes, very scandalous I know. My prowling ways took me all the way from Long Beach to Costa Mesa, and into Irvine. I even had affairs with some pretty highly rated Yelp salons/stylists too. Well, at least that was the case till my last cut. Yes, could it be? Have I finally found the one? The one who can make me change my whoring ways? Yes, I think I've found her and her name is Eva! I came to her pretty desperate. I truly thought I was going to have to chop all my hair off into a pixie and start over as I couldn't see how my length, what little I had, could be salvaged at all. But after talking to Eva, she eased my fears, worked her magic and I came out w/ a fab new 'do that I love! I haven't liked my hair this much in soooo long. I actually had forgotten what it was like to have a good hair day. She is awesome not only for her mad skills, but also for her personality. She's so easy to talk to and down to earth. I just can't say enough about her and my new cut. One word does come to mind though, LOVE! Also, the salon is exactly as people described. So relaxing and spa like. A very soothing atmosphere and a friendly staff. It's icing on the cake that it's on my way home from work. So convenient. I also love that fact that I can come in for complimentary bang trims in between appointments. Oh and for the record and because I find it helpful when I read reviews myself, my hair type is short, very fine, w/ a very slight wave. I'm in the process of growing it out, but that process has been ongoing for years now as I always get impatient and can never make it past a certain length. I think Eva may be the one to help me get to get there though. Even if I don't make it, I know my hair will look fab regardless! =) Oh and one final thought, the reason I know it's love is that I was inspired to write this review after the 1st visit and right away. I'm such a procrastinator when it comes to reviews, but Eva deserved the 5 stars and high praises after rescuing me from my bad hair prison. read more

Got exactly what I wanted from Jamie. A trim and subtle ombre highlights that complement my dark brown here. I'm not big on change and Jamie listened to that, thank god! As soon as I walked in, the lovely receptionist offered me water as I waited. The salon was clean and each station had beautiful fresh flowers set atop of them. Jamie even loaned me her ipad to watch a useful youtube video on how to achieve natural waves as she styled my hair., Very different experience from other salons. Loved it =) read more

I'm in the market for a curio or some type of cabinet to store all my nail polish in. I remembered the antique store off Wardlow. It's now a restaurant supply so no luck. I was enroute home and I spotted the nail polish display through the window. Of course I went in. Now, I'm a Rice-a-Roni, do-it-yourself type gal, usually. I can't remember the last time I went into a salon. My hair is down past my ass now, and I only trim it when it gets uneven. But it's becoming more trouble than it's worth. It tends to get caught in the moon roof, and I find myself dreading even combing it everyday. Also, I do my nails myself: I use it as an excuse to watch TV. My sister pays $60 a month on manis and pedis. I figure I can use that money to buy all the nail polish I want. Anyway, while I was perusing the nail polish (they only have SpaRitual now, and not the entire range of colors, BTW), Jeanine (I'm pretty sure that's her name) came over and asked if I needed any help. She showed me around the boutique, then took me on a tour of the whole place. It's unlike any other salon I've been in. The dark wood and ambient lighting made the whole place so relaxing and modern. There's a massage room, a pedicure area, saunas, and even a workout area for pliates and such. They offer lotions and jewlery and eco-totes... all sorts of items to give as gifts. Jeanine told me they didn't have a manicurist yet, and they were probably going to get more nail polish in. I will definitely return here, both to get my hair cut and to buy more nail polish. Even though they don't have much polish yet, they're friendly and helpful and the salon is just too gorgeous. Maybe by then I'll have a cabinet for all my nail polish. read more

I found this amazing salon through Yelp. The reviews led me over there and I'm pleased as punch! I called to make an Appt and got in the following morning no problem and met with Amber. We discussed exactly what I've been craving for my hair and decided to go for it. The atmosphere is so chill and the decor is so unique. Amber really took the time to make sure we were on the same page on what I wanted to do and she didn't let me down. I would come back here again for sure. Great location and awesome service! I had a great experience: I dropped in today without an appointment and (after some conversation) they put me in for later in the day. As soon as I was away though, I got a phone call saying that space was suddenly available! Anyway, good conversation was had while I was getting my hair done, and it was definitely one of the better haircuts I've gotten in a while. it was a little pricey but I quite enjoyed the place and will definitely go back again! read more

Haven't had anything wrong happen so far! I haven't had a haircut in over a year and was in desperate need of one. I am usually very reluctant to style my hair in any way other than wearing it long with layers. No appt was made but I managed to get a same day appt, this time with Josie. Josie was great! She's very welcoming and definitely able to respond well to my questions by suggesting what look might be best or not. I put all my trust in her. She introduced me to a new product that I have NEVER heard of from any previous haristylist/salons. I'm hooked on her. She'll be my go to person for my quest to get a pixie but for now, it's a gradual process. Outcome: I love my hair, I love what she did and I love her suggestions for home styling. read more

Every time I wake up the morning of an appointment at Surrender Salon in Long Beach, I smile because I know when I go there, I'm going to be well taken care of there. Jamie is a real artist and always makes sure I walk out of there feeling like a million bucks. Plus her music choice is just too rad to describe.
