They treat patients in the hallways. No privacy at all. Some of the nurses are mean and nasty. Doctors try to push procedures without even explaining things to patient or their families. They have their own agendas with medications and procedures. They leave the families and patients right out of the decision making. Very inferior hospital and staff. read more

BC CANCER, SURREY, BC does not have their own site here. Staff at BC CAncer, Surrey, BC. show how they DO NOT CARE. At the check in desk they have documents for patients, they cannot even cut the pages straight, a bit of cae yes that will do; the COMMENT CARD sheet is so vague, toner must be too expensive to print legible sheets. It shows the general BC Cancer attitude. WE DO NOT CARE, GO AWAY!! My friend had an appointment and while traveling by transit (3 different buses required) over there they cancel the appointment, why not, cancer is just like a splinter in your pinkie, right. Awful place to be a patient. Staff at the Waiting room desks look as if they rather be somewhere else, well go somewhere else. Still stand by the worst hospital in British Columbia. First things first the parking is atrocious on the North side. There are five levels of parking and I feel like I'm in some sort of Nintendo game racing for an upcoming spot. It can get pretty brutal from my experience. The welcoming front staff were very nice everyday I went in to visit my cousin. However the rest of the hospital is appalling. My cousin is on 51N which is not good and the nurses were completely disrespectful to family and friends visiting. They did not pay attention to allergies and my cousin flatlined when given morphine. The staff need to pay more attention to the charts and a better understanding of their patients. I would avoid this hospital if that is even an option. Had to take three year old in for stitches in his mouth. The experience at the hospital was the same, if not more, traumatic than the initial injury. The doctor took no effort to explain options to us, but jumped straight to restraining our child, using my own arms. they flashed lights in his eyes (with no offer of eye protection) upsetting our kid immediately. 4 nurses had to be called in to hold him down as he screamed "don't touch me" and "don't hurt me". The numbing agent clearly hadn't worked, yet they proceeded with him screaming in pain. No consideration was made for our sons mental health and the damaging effect such treatment would have on him. I had to be the one asking for things, such as eye protection and the fact the numbing agent hadn't worked enough, but was told it was fine. Now both myself and my 3 year old are traumatized by the experience, especially knowing that there should have been other options of how to deal with it. "The moment we restrain a child for a medical procedure is the moment we as health professionals have failed the child. Failed to be respectful, failed to adequately prepare the child and family, and failed to implement developmentally- appropriate evidence-based fear and pain management strategies. I'm writing this brief review, of the quality of Food Services here at Surrey Memorial Hospital, as a follow up to the review I offed a couple of days ago. I was interested to see if my assessment would require a revised opinion based on the lunch offered today. My tray today arrived hot and on time. The Cream of Vegetable Soup was piping hot. The entrée was a Chicken Teriyaki Rice Pilaf Bowl. The chicken was still juicy and tender. No small feat under the circumstances, ever present in this large facility. The vegetables were plentiful and not at all overdone, another pleasant surprise and the rice was mildly flavoured and firm. The soup was a vegetable purée and tasty. Not much of a challenge anywhere. The overall presentation, colouring and taste, were quite satisfying. Extraordinary in fact. Whom ever is in-charge of food services here is consistently preforming and delivering a quality product - especially when considering the size of this operation. Surrey Memorial hospital is place of miracles. With its bumbling staff, and most uncomfortable musical chairs your required to wait in, it's a miracle any one gets any better there. In fact I'm pretty sure no real assistance was given to anyone the night I was there ... all night long. read more

I've been to this hospital several times. My brother had food poisoning and we had to go to the emergency room. The wait time was unbelievable. We waited for more than 7 hours! I've seen a lot of people in pain and no one is helping them. And the nurses are so rude. I've never met anyone as rude as them. I really feel bad for the patients. This place is a nightmare. The second time we went here was when my bf had a hip injury. They were not helpful at all. The nurse even told my bf that he's just faking it. Like, what the heck? Why would he fake his injury and pain? And, also, when I came back to pick him up, I went to the emergency reception area. The two receptionist were just gossiping about other employees. I've waited there in front of them as I needed help to ask about my bf. When clearly I needed help from them, they just continue chit-chatting. And, when I said "excuse me" they were like "what do you want?" I was in shock with their attitudes! They were so rude as if I'm bothering them. As if other patients, people in pain, aren't that important to them. I don't really know why. If people had a choice, they wouldn't go to this hospital. I have been a patient for 11 days and I'm leaving with same lain and a probable addiction to Dilaudid (Hydromorph). Sending me home with over35 mg a day to control the pain with no idea what the pain is. They told me to add it to my already chronic pain. So going home and will be pursuing other medical advice. read more

I thought after the covid scare, humans will learn to be sanitize but apparently this wake call is still under a deep sleep for this hospital! Before covid it was worse and now is extremely worse that it should close down, where is audit when you need or they getting paid under table to pass this nasty smelly bug infested hospital!!! Had to go visit a family one they are put in the hallway due to shortage of staff and overloaded with patients! Flies everywhere over hanging trash, smelled like international food, remind you i myself come from ethnicity background but in a professional setting it shouldn't feel like in a 3rd world country, but i guess when hospitals are desperate is better to have a dumb nurse and a dumb doctor who got lucky and passed the nclex but has no idea what there head and ass is located! Zero respect for someone that i have to do their job and educate them! Forget the negative reviews. The nurses and doctors know what they're doing. Sure the wait times might be rough, but that's because it's a busy place and some of the patients... let's just say they're not really in the most mentally stable condition so they cause disruptions from time to time. You can see this throughout the stay by hearing the most common alert- code white. Regardless, the staff were incredibly helpful during my 5 days stay at the hospital. They provided food numerous times throughout the day and were incredibly knowledgeable to the point they answered all of my questions. They made sure to do frequent check-ups to see if I was okay and the doctors were available most of the time. They get a 4/5 for me and only because of the heavy wait time at the emergency hospital. Was hit in the head with a metallic object and cracked my head open. Went to the hospital because my head was bleeding like crazy, I had a big and deep cut and I was super foggy and zoned out and I ended up walking out. I was there for 2 hours and had to constantly change my bandage every 5 minutes and they seemed annoyed with giving me more gauge and asking if I could get it checked out to see if I had a concussion. I have a perfect safe driving record. I am rarely ill. However, I sometimes do stupid human tricks which cause my friends and co-workers to wonder where I disappeared to for a week. The last time this happened I was lucky enough to be taken to VGH. I do not wish to be injured in Surrey. My aging dad has been admitted here a few times this year. The hospital conditions were dismal. The waiting area looked like purgatory, and the aisles were all filled head to toe with people with various ailments in various states of disrepair. Much of the hospital is a construction site. I can't blame them for trying to improve the place, but it is this disarray that adds to an already confusing layout. The staff is awesome. But you come here to get well, or visit a loved one, and the staff is only there to do there job properly. It's not their fault that the building is so morbid. To add to the misery the parking fees are exorbitant at $4.50 an hour. Do yourself a favour and and park at the public street meters a block north. We had a terrible experience at this hospital. I brought my girlfriend in because she had issues with her throat and hadn't been able to swallow anything for the third day in a row. After we signed in at the ER we were sent to a waiting room further into the hospital. Now, they knew that my girlfriend hadn't eaten in days, but they insisted that they needed the doctor to look at her before she could get an IV. We waited there for 10 hours before the doctor got to her and gave her an IV. TEN HOURS! Need I say again that she hadn't eaten or drank anything in days! They did a biopsy of her throat and sent it out for testing. We got a call about a week later asking if we could book an appointment to see the specialist that she originally saw in the hospital. We booked it, and when we went in to talk to the doctor, he was very rushed to get the facts across (doctor language of course), but didn't answer many of our questions at all. Without asking anything about what medication she may already be taking (eg. sleeping pills, birth control) he wrote a prescription for a drug that reacts with many of them. Coming out of the doctors office, we didn't even know what we had. We had to came home and researched what the doctors should have done in the first place simply to find out what was wrong. The drug prescribed to her reacted with a lot of things common to nearly every house hold, it increases the risk of cancer, and can actually cause more reactions to foods in the long run which was what it was supposed to fix in the first place. Upon researching what was wrong, we discovered that an 'elimination diet' has a 94% success rate in lieu of the drug. This alone should have been the doctors first pick instead of pushing another drug on us. I can't say for sure if this hospital is under staffed or under funded, or if something else is going on there behind the scenes, but my best advice to people going to this hospital is to go somewhere else. *** Update *** Being adults and taking responsibility for our own bodies and lives, we studied the biopsy results we received from the doctor. It turns out that the standard actions proceeding the results that my girlfriend got is to do an allergy test. This allergy test is the standard, I can't stress that enough, standard, and they decided to force the pills on us instead. People, PLEASE don't go to this hospital. It is by far the worst I have been to, and there's no way we're ever going back. ever. Even with the test results, they simply 'Google' the answer and read it back to you. I'm not exaggerating, The doctor was on his phone, Googling what the results were and simply read back what was on his phone. Even when I asked a question, he avoided it and continued to read. OMG, my mom is currently in the ICU here and what a DUMP this place is. I continuously see people complaining about RCH and I think they should be shown what SMH emergency looks like. It's ALWAYS overcrowded and has bed numbers on the walls of the hallways where they put people who are waiting. It's horrible. The nurses in ICU are amazing though. read more

I went to Surrey Memorial 3 weeks ago after being told to go by a home care nurse who comes twice a week to do woundcare. I have been having them come for months but it keeps getting worse and the nurse thinks I have had an infection for quite some time and she is concerned I am at risk for sepsis as I had been having symptoms for 3-4 days. I told them this and they said "well you're going to wait for atleast 6 hours. Due to co-vid we have regulations on how many patients per area and blah blah. There is a protocol they are supposed to follow if sepsis is suspected and this was not followed. Now 3 weeks later I feel alot worse and my wound which is getting bigger and turning black is causing me constant pain. As Vancouver hospitals display their current wait times I will try to find a way there as I am worried that without treatment I will need amputation. Fraser Health in general doesn't seem to care much about patients. Several times they have insisted on inserting an iv and telling me to come back daily for iv treatments knowing i have no mode of transportation and I struggle in general with mobility due to chronic lymphedema which has not been treated as msp only pays $23 per visit to a maximum of 12 per YEAR for manual lymph drainage which would improve my condition. read more

I would rate the hospital as 1 star if I was going to a luxury hotel and not a hospital. The staff were friendly and courteous. Nursing staff in particular seemed very caring. Unfortunately, no hospital stay will be pleasant. Surrey hospital is a bit run-down in areas but undergoing a lot of renovations. I've had a few personal experiences here. Not my favorite place but better than nothing. read more

This is a good high-quality hospital but because it's in Surrey it gets very, very, very busy. I came in with testicular torsion, waited 5 hours and ended up losing a testicle which could have been saved had they been 2 hours faster. What I'm saying is, you will wait at this hospital unless you get fast-tracked. It is not the staffs fault, though, its just a very busy place. read more

I agree with Dawne ... one star is too many for this hospital. I do not know why they are not under investigation, to be honest. My elderly friend experienced a temporary ischemic attack (a mini-stroke which rarely leaves damage or clues to its cause) last week. By the time I got him to SMH he was well on his way to recovery, and by the end of the day was back to normal. Nevertheless, tests were done to rule out blood clots and other obvious causes. As far as I know, nothing was found. Two days later my friend was admitted and placed in 'neurology' for further tests ... for what reason I cannot say, and they will not tell me (I am his primary contact person/caretaker). I have left countless messages to be contacted with updates, and have received none. To the best of my knowledge, there is no reason for them to keep my friend in the hospital at approx $7000 per day while feeding him processed, genetically modified food (which is more likely to exacerbate his 'condition' than help it). The last time Bill was taken to SMH, after 2 weeks or so of 'diagnosis' it was determined that he was suffering from low blood pressure issues. They also decided that he MIGHT have problems with blood clots because of a swollen ankle, and put him on Warfarin (rat poison). But they wouldn't release him because some social worker felt he wasn't capable of taking his extremely dangerous medication properly (hmmm ... maybe you shouldn't prescribe it if it's so dangerous?). They won't tell you that they have no right to hold a patient, and make you feel like a criminal if you try, but eventually we insisted that Bill be released. Upon release the doctor prescribed Warfarin (the rat poison) AND HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE MEDICATION FOR HIS LOW BLOOD PRESSURE CONDITION!!!! It nearly killed him. I informed the staff today that Bill will be leaving tomorrow. We will see a doctor and, if a further hospital stay is recommended we will go anywhere but SMH. On my way out I spoke with a patient who had hip surgery 5 1/2 months ago and can't get out because he has nobody to help him. That's $7000 X 165 ... OVER ONE MILLION DOLLARS. WTF?? read more

I don't believe a little bit brink will change much for blood test result. 2, My mother was broken wrist. She stayed in hospital for a week. She had blood test every day. Her arm are bruised. There is too many blood test for old, weak person. This is a bad medical care. There is a good way to take care of very sick person. 3, My father were going to hospital before dying. The emergency of Surrey Memorial Hospital is the worst emergency I have ever seen in my life. I came to the emergence reception at about 9:45 pm yesterday with symptoms of COVID19 with a sore throat, headache, difficulty in breathing, body pain. I was admitted after 20 minutes because of papers work. Then I waited outside in the reception whole with others for about 1.5 hours, then called inside the waited in the reception of the emergency for another 1.5 hours. Then I was allowed to the emergency hall and stayed there until 3:35 am and haven't been seen by the doctor and I left the emergency. When I asked the reception for water the nurse in charge told me I can't drink water until I speak to the doctor. You can imagine staying in the emergency without water. There was only one doctor and about 8 nurses and administration and most of us were not checked even for initial check by nurses. I saw people who were really vomiting and were not able to stand on their feet from the chair stayed for 5-6 hours just to see the doctor. I have only 2.5 years in Canada and this was the first time to go to emergency and even in our under-developed countries I have never seen such a service. Today I still suffer from the symptoms of COVID19 but it is better to die at home than go to the emergency of Surrey Memorial Hospital. The staff there are doing a lot of paper works, everything is carrying a file and writing and moving files from one desk to another while the physical service is very less. It is better if the management reduces the paperwork and do more on digital, paperless, or computer system with a digital signature. read more

Avoid this hospital as possible as you can. Not a very good service and very disappointing. Emergency section is not really for emergency. You should be prepared to wait for hours. Based on my own experience, after my father's surgery and during his recovery stage, he was forced to move out by an LPN named "Aly" from s34 surgery orthopedics unit. It is so unprofessional treatment that my father got stressed and pressured to move out. Terrible experience. Fraserhealth should investigate this further and MUST not tolerate this kind of attitude since instead of making the patients feel better, they feel worse. read more

I spent 5 hours in the emergency room with severe abdominal pains, and got 3 minutes to talk to the doctor. I had to go back the following day for an ultrasound which took 2 1/2 hours for results and then another 2 hour wait for a CT scan all in all I spent 9 hours waiting and maybe a total of 6 minutes with a doctor. If you can go to another hospital, I would recommend it. My infant son had croup in December and they didn't do a damn thing until his chest was concaving and he nearly stopped breathing, they had even sent us home. AVOID this hospital! read more
